The basic principles of firefighter safety, fire behavior, thermal layering, flame over, back draft, ventilation, stages of fire, and fire streams will be reviewed in the classroom. Students will put their knowledge to use in the Fire Service Training Bureau s two-story Mobile Fire Training Trailer. The basic principles of ladder usage, water application, and ventilation will be reviewed. The class will practice correct ladder usage, advancing hose, fire attacks, and communications between working teams with the incident commander. Students will put their knowledge to use in the Fire Service Training Bureau s two-story Mobile Fire Training Trailer. This course will give students the skills necessary in fire behavior, safety, basic S.C.B.A, ropes, ladders, forcible entry, and fire hose rolls and carries on the fire scene. Topics covered include patient restraint systems, and the associated injuries in hybrid vehicles and the potential dangers to patients and emergency personnel. Ethanol Emergencies for First Responders (EMS, Fire, Law Enforcement) CEHs: 6 EMS (Optional) Class Limit: 30 Course #: ZHE-100-FD03 *** Course Description: One of the fastest growing industries in Iowa brings numerous challenges to the first responder. This course will cover a variety of topics including hazardous materials, fire, emergency medical and technical rescue response. Students will learn common hazardous substances along with the hazards they pose while being used in these plants. Confined space and technical rescue situations, fires and fire suppression systems will also be covered. Students will participate in group activities and tabletop exercise. Course Description: Students will learn to recognize the various types of explosives, improvised devices and who to call for assistance. The afternoon will consist of a live demonstration of different types of explosives. Course Description: This course provides information and skills necessary to perform rescues utilizing ropes. Topics include sizeup and scene management, knots, equipment, anchors, ascending/ descending techniques, and mechanical advantages. Students will participate in rescue evolutions under supervision of the instructors. Course Description: This course will take a look at school buses today and the various rescue methods to include advanced extrication techniques, patient care challenges and fire emergencies. Upon completion the student will be able to: identify early in the incident the resources involved due to multi-casualties; demonstrate proper patient packaging and removal techniques; recognize the need for S.T.A.R.T. Triage System and understand the special medical needs associated with bus accidents. Also this year, the students will have the opportunity for live fire training in the hands-on portion!

In addition, if you have any of the following equipment, please bring: water rescue helmet, water boots, ice or dry suits. Course Description: This course is designed for agencies that need a formalized water rescue team due to their responses at lakes, ponds, non-flowing and flowing waterways. Subjects covered include rescuer safety, self rescue techniques, pre-planning, and size-up of water hazards. Hands-on evolutions will take place on the Des Moines River. The content will meet NFPA 1006 and NFPA 1670 requirements. ZPS-203-FD11 Equipment/Gear Required: Full protective clothing. Course Description: America s increasing preoccupation with security is making Fire Service entry more and more difficult. Quick and safe entry is essential for effective rescue and interior fire fighting. This class will include conventional forcible entry and introduce students to twenty-first century tools and techniques. Students will have an opportunity to practice with a variety of tools and techniques utilizing a new forcible entry prop. Instructors: PRI Staff and Iowa Central Community College The Art of Reading Smoke CEHs: None Class Limit: 30 Day(s): Sat. (6 hours) Course #: ZPS-203-FD12 Course Description: One of the most important size-up skills an officer or fire fighter can have is the ability to capture in an instant the size of a fire and the potential for a rapid, hostile fire event like a flashover or smoke explosion. Often, smoke issuing from a structure is the only clue available to predict fire behavior. This session will give first-due officers and fire fighters a 4-step process to read smoke and predict hostile fire events. Instructor: Scott McFarland, Lieutenant, West Des Moines Fire Dept. Clandestine Laboratory Awareness for First Responders (Law, Fire, EMS) CEHs: EMS (Optional) Class Limit: 30 Course #: Sat. ZPS-203-FD13 Sun. ZPS-203-FD14 Course Description: This 6-hour course is suitable for law enforcement line personnel, firefighters, EMS personnel, and other first responders who may inadvertently come in contact with a clandestine laboratory. Course attendees are given timely and critical information on chemicals and equipment commonly found at clandestine laboratories. More importantly, they are made aware of the hazards associated with clandestine laboratories and actions that should be taken (or not taken) at a suspected lab site. Topics in this course include: history and effects of methamphetamine, characteristics of methamphetamine abuse, chemicals and equipment, and hazards to first responder personnel and the community. The course will also include a hands-on portion for the students of a mock-up lab incident. Instructors: Timothy F. The new PEARS course is designed to prepare EMT s and First Responders who infrequently see critically ill children to identify a pediatric victim at risk of severe cardiopulmonary distress. To intervene early to stabilize the child and contact the next level of care as soon as possible. ZPS-203-FD23 Equipment/Gear Required: Full PPE including S.C.B.A. with spare cylinder. Course Description: To most firefighters managing your air means working until the low air alarm activates and then leaving the hazardous environment. The misconception that a firefighter will always have enough time to exit the IDLH on their reserve air is literally killing firefighters. This dynamic class introduces and reinforces the idea of proactive air management. Some of the areas covered include why our current air management practices are killing us, how firefighters are dying on the fireground and what can be done about it. The class includes compelling audio and video of actual fire events illustrating how firefighters get into trouble and what it sounds like to run out of air. The classroom session is followed by extensive hands-on training that includes basic air management techniques, emergency procedures for extending your air, and what to do when you are out of air. This is a physically demanding class that requires students to work with full PPE, S.C.B.A., and hand-held radio under stressful conditions. Instructor: Rich Rodewald, Council Bluffs Fire Department

6 Incident Safety Officer (Fire, EMS) CEHs: 12 EMS (Optional) Class Limit: 24 Day(s): Sat. & Sun (12 hour class) Course #: ZHE-100-FD16 *** Course Description: This course provides emergency response personnel with a solid foundation and knowledge to identify and analyze safety concerns and to communicate recommended solutions to the Incident Commander. Students focus on emergency scene operations within the Incident Command System. Participants will gain confidence in their abilities to handle a variety of emergency situations through classroom exercises. Instructor: Clifford McFarland, Fire Service Training Bureau Field Staff Calling Mayday CEHs: None Class Limit: 24 Course #: ZPS-203-FD24 Equipment/Gear Required: Full PPE including S.C.B.A. with spare cylinder. Course Description: Why is getting a firefighter to call a Mayday such a problem? First, no national standard exists in relation to calling a Mayday. Second, we do not teach or practice calling a Mayday, and third, we do not have specific rules for when a firefighter must call a Mayday. This class teaches firefighters how to recognize a Mayday situation and requires them to demonstrate the ability to call a Mayday under various emergency situations that they may find themselves in. This is a physically demanding class that requires students to work with full PPE, S.C.B.A., and a handheld radio under stressful conditions. Students who complete the training are eligible for the National Fire Academy certificate H134 Calling the Mayday: Hands-on Training. Instructor: Rich Rodewald, Council Bluffs Fire Department Fire Investigation (Fire, Law Enforcement) Course #: ZPS-203-FD15 Course Description: Students will gain knowledge and skills necessary to determine if fires are accidental or incendiary. Students will also get the opportunity to look at some of the causes of accidental fires. Instructors: State Fire Marshal Division Vent-Enter-Search CEHs: None Class Limit: 20 Course #: Sat. ZPS-203-FD17 Course Description: This one-day hands-on class will focus on the strategies of Vent-Enter-Search for finding, protecting and removing emergency victims while maximizing the firefighter s own safety. They will focus on four search dimensions: search size-up and strategy, accessing victims, victims management, and escape. Instructors: Fred Malven and Dean Tope, Nevada Fire Dept. ICS-200 Basic Incident Command System Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents (Fire, EMS, Law) Course #: Sat. ZPS-203-FD18 * Sun. ZPS-203-FD19 * Course Description: This course is designed to enable personnel to operate efficiently during an incident or event within the Incident Command System. This course focuses on the management of single resources. This course provides information on ICS organizational structure, initial organizational development at an incident, organizational expansion and contraction, incident action planning process, and transfer of command. Instructors: ICCC Homeland Security Positive Pressure Attack (Fire, EMS, Law) Course #: Sat. ZPS-203-FD20 Sun. ZPS-203-FD21 Course Description: This class is designed for Firefighters and Fire Department Officers who utilize Positive Pressure Ventilation as a means of Fire Suppression. This presentation is primarily lecturebased and includes a hands-on practical demonstration of effective Positive Pressure Ventilation techniques. Instructors: PRI Staff Dealing With the Media A Short Course for Rural First Responders (Fire, EMS, Law) CEHs: None Class Limit: 40 Course #: ZPS-203-FD22 * Course Description: Dealing with the Media: A short course for rural responders is designed to provide rural first responders with the skills and knowledge to quickly adopt the role of public information officer (PIO) if/when needed and to communicate with the public through the media. Many rural first responder organizations do not have a full or part-time PIO on staff. This awareness-level course, whose development relied heavily on a modified version of the two-day course, Basic Public Information Officer Course (IG-290) of the Emergency Management Institute of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is divided into five modules with an estimated instruction time of six hours. The method of instruction is lecture and discussion. A minimum prerequisite for taking this course is successful completion of ICS-100: Introduction to ICS and FEMA IS-700: NIMS. CEHs: Approval for continuing education for EMS personnel by the Iowa Bureau of EMS is provided through Iowa Central Community College. Students must provide the following equipment in order to participate: 1) Helmet (NFPA compliant) 2) Protective hood 3) Coat with liner (NFPA compliant) 4) Pants with liner (NFPA compliant), Note: 3/4 length boots are not approved in lieu of pants. 5) Fire fighting boots 6) Gloves (Cal OSHA or NFPA compliant) 7) Selfcontained breathing apparatus with spare bottle. Note: Bottles under current hydrostatic test will be refilled at no cost. BEARDS: (facial hair) Persons with beards (including full face beards, mutton chops, and goatees), will not be allowed to participate in hands-on portions of sectional classes requiring the use of S.C.B.A. or involving live fire. Persons with beards may attend the classroom portion and participate in other portions of the class which do not require S.C.B.A. or do not involve live fire. No exceptions will be made to these requirements. Iowa Fire Service Bookstore: The Iowa Fire Service Bookstore (IFSB) will have a booth at the Northwestern Area Training Academy Educational Conference. The IFSB generally operates as a mail order service provided by the Fire Service Training Bureau. The booth will give customers the opportunity to look at and purchase merchandise. Orders can also be placed for any item not on-hand at the Training Academy. Purchases from the IFSB will allow you to supplement your training and classroom activities with educational manuals that will enhance your learning. IOWA CERTIFICATION EXAM: The Fire Service Training Bureau will offer the Fire Fighter I, II and Instructor I exams at the Applied Science and Technology (AST) Building on Friday, November 5, 2010, at 5 p.m. Attendance is by pre-registration ONLY. NO WALK-INS WILL BE ALLOWED! Those testing for the first time need to submit an application form with certification fee or billing information. Please note, the exam will take a minimum of three hours. To pre-register or to receive an application, please contact the Fire Service Training Bureau at Fire Fighter I and II exams will be based on the 2008 NFPA standard and the Essentials 5th Edition. Bring full protective equipment and S.C.B.A. to exam site. No facial hair in the area of the face piece seal is allowed. No exceptions will be made.
