THE ESTUARY NEWS European Section 2011-2012 College André Siegfried Second edition The Seine Estuary It comes from Pause and finishes near Le Havre.

When it comes near Le Havre it forms meanders because of the altitude. When the Seine approaches the sea the river slows.

An Estuary = LIFE An Estuarine Bird : The Common Teal This is the Common Teal, Anas Grecca in latin or La Sarcelle d'hiver in French. It lives in Europe, in reedbeds, in the estuary.

It eats aquatics invertebrates, insects, worms, crustaceans, moluscs, larvaes... It has got a brown, grey and black plumage. It has got a small bill and a webbed feet.

For fish it's a nursery, a play ground, a meeting ground and a mating ground. On the banks of the Seine there are 264 sorts of animals and 2000 species of birds. When it comes near Le Havre it forms meanders because of the altitude. When the Seine approaches the sea the river slows. It does not have the force to cut through rocks so it goes round obstacles it finds. The seine estuary is where the River Seine meets the English channel, where the fresh water meets the salt water. In the estuary it lives in mudflats, in nests on the ground near the water. In winter it migrates in the south but M. Jardin says birds migrate later because of the climate change. Nicolas and Thomas St Vigor D Ymonville viewpoint By Valentin and Amelie The Oyster-catcher another estuarine bird We went to St Vigor d ymonville viewpoint on October the 17 th. We walked about 1km. At this point, we saw an estuarine farm that We arrived at the produces corn, beets, viewpoint but it was wheat... very foggy. Usually it s beautiful because we can see the Seine and the bridges that span the river. But we can also see boats. It s a very peaceful and quiet place we enjoyed it. Maëline and Natanaelle4e1

The Salle Avocet We visited the Salle Avocet near The Normandy bridge. It is a room with lots of information to explain the life of the estuary.

In England this bird is the logo of the RSPB. This room was created at the same time as the natural reserve of the Seine estuary in Reeds for thatch The salle Avocet next to the Normandy bridge. We met Mickael Jardin. He is very interested in nature. He is fond of protecting nature. He works in the Salle Avocet. He is a guide for visitors and school groups. Mr Jardin explained the Seine Estuary with a model you can see in the Salle Avocet He spoke too about the reeds-beds and the migratory and estuarine birds. It was very interesting The Avocet and logo of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Lucie and Sarah The Normandy Bridge It is a cable-stayed bridge and it crosses the river Seine near Honfleur. It was built from 1989 to 1995 by François Dayelle. It is 2, meters long and meters wide. The pilones are 214 meters high. For the cars, it costs 5 but it is free for pedestrians, cyclists and motobikes. Under the bridge, we can see the river Seine, the reed-beds where there is a nursery. 3 Let's go and see Notre Dame de Grace Church in Honfleur! This is the Notre Dame chapel in Honfleur. It is set on a hill overlooking Honfleur. It was built from 1600 to 1615 by Rich families from Honfleur and sailors. It is dark but light comes through stained glass windows. There are paintings and icons in abundance and Ex-voto. You can come into this church every day and it is free. One example of Ex-voto Corentin and Tanguy What are Ex-Voto? THE EX-VOTO IN NOTRE-DAME DE GRACE CHURCH There are 4 types of ex-voto: Fishermen and their families gave them to the church. 1-BOATS 2-WINDOWS 3-PLAQUES 4-GRAFITTI Notre Dame de Grâce chapel, on the hill Côte de Grâce, south-west of Honfleur. Open everyday for visitors. Local artists come to paint the chapel.

4 Our trip on the Estuary October 17 th 2011 The viewpoint on a foggy day We started near St Vigor. We followed a muddy way. We arrived above the Seine, and we were supposed to see the Seine Estuary. There was a lot of fog! Besides, we saw a big antenna that sends and receives information for boats that go to Rouen. Mr Lebourgeois told us a story about his grand-father who died in a bore. Today it is not possible. The tidal bore is now under control. To control and reduce the force of the bore on the Seine, workers made a sea wall. It's safer for boats drivers, and it reduces the waiting time to go up to Rouen. In England the most famous is the Bristol Bore. You can surf on this big river wave! Mickael Jardin told us a lot of things about the reed-bed. He said, for example, that there are around 250 species of migratory birds. Every bird species of the south comes here to the Seine Estuary for the winter. There are between 20 and birds here in winter. Richard and Anthime We took the bus for the Notre-Dame de Grâce church, in Honfleur. We had another foggy viewpoint on the Seine Estuary Port 2000 in the fog! There was a monument for the fisherman. We saw 4 different types of ex-voto in the church. An ex-voto is a proof of passage, and fisherman hoped that they would be lucky. Fisherman left ex-votos here, like paintings, small boats, etc After that, we came back school.

It is a place where fishes and animals like birds live, mix, meet and reproduce. the Seine Estuary Protect the estuary! We can do surfing, swimming, boating, and fishing in estuaries. The river Severn This is the river Severn. It's located in England and Wales near Bristol.

It starts in the Welsh Cambrian and the river meets the sea in England next to Bristol.

We think it's the most beautiful river in the world.

6 The river Severn This is the river Severn. It's located in England and Wales near Bristol. It is 220 metres long and 5 metres wide at the mouth. It starts in the Welsh Cambrian and the river meets the sea in England next to Bristol. It flows through many cities :Shrewsbury, Worcester and Gloucester. It is the longest river in the UK. They are protected. The reeds are for making thatch for Norman cottages. In the reed beds near the Normandy Bridge you can see hundreds of different species of animals and birds.
