As you know, October is dedicated to raising awareness about Breast Cancer. For this purpose, we have teamed up with American Mission Hospital Amwaj to provide more information on how to get screened, what signs to look out for as well as a special offer for residents. Fadhul Position: Nurse Midwife, Clinical Education and Training Coordinator Company: American Mission Hospital Nationality: Bahraini Tell us a little a little about your work background? My position at AMH is Nurse Midwife and Clinical Educator and Training Coordinator. I am highly focused, knowledgeable and experienced in the providing of high standard of care alongside a multidisciplinary team within a hospital setting. I also believe I have a positive attitude that enables me to give health education, raise awareness and care in accordance with up to date, evidence-based professional practice. How many years have you been an OB- GYN? Change the risk factors you can control your periods and at other times. Look at your breasts when you change your clothes, or feel your breasts for instance when you take a bath. Look for changes that seem unusual to you. If you find an unusual change, see your doctor or nurse practitioner as soon as you can. Change those risk factors that you can control. Is breast cancer more common in this region? The incidence of breast cancer among Bahraini women is quite high; data from the Bahrain Cancer Registry (dated: 15 Oct, 2017) shows approximately 250 breast cancer cases are received in SMC per year. Experts are highly recommending future research to be directed towards understanding the reasons behind Bahrain having the highest incidence rate of breast cancer in all GCC countries. What are the offers at AMH during the month of October? Are these services available all year round? Every year American Mission Hospital offers a package of Breast Ultrasound and Mammogram at affordable cost during month of October. Can breast cancer affect both men and woman? If yes, is it common? I have 20 years experience in OB-GYN. What advice would you give about screening? How often should a person be screened? There is no clear benefit of physical breast exams done by either a health professional or by self for breast cancer screening- up to date researches. Due to this lack of evidence, regular clinical breast exam and breast self-exam are not recommended. Still, all women should be familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel and report any changes to a health care provider right away. What advice would you give about breast cancer prevention and early detection? Get to know your breasts over time. Learn what natural changes take place during It is very rare for men to be diagnosed with breast cancer, that is why a lot of the information is directed towards women. The symptoms, diagnosis and treatment are all very similar to women with breast cancer. Anything else you would like to add? There is no sure way to prevent breast cancer, however all women can lower risk by attaining and maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, limit alcohol use. Also, consider things such as birth control options that don t depend on hormone regulation, not using hormone therapy to deal with the symptoms of menopause. And finally, always BE SAFE, BE SURE.
