On that same note, many of our residents will choose to travel for the Eid break, whilst most of you are returning from well-deserved summer holidays.

We hope you take this time to spend with your families and loved ones, and enjoy the wonderful festivities together. On that same note, many of our residents will choose to travel for the Eid break, whilst most of you are returning from well-deserved summer holidays. Bon voyage to those going away and a warm welcome back to our residents who have been away during the hot summer months. We hope you had a relaxing break. We are happy to announce that we have a few events in the works, lined up till the rest of the year which we hope you enjoy. More details on these events will be mentioned closer to the time, so please stay updated with our upcoming events sections and/or our social media channels. You will have noticed that we have added a new section this month to our newsletter dedicated to health and wellness issues. The health column will be courtesy of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Bahrain (RCSI) and will cover different health issues and topics every month. Jameel Almatrook Managing Director, Amwaj Islands Behind the Name CAPTAIN S CORNER The Amwaj Marina has come one step closer to becoming a one-stop shop for all boat owners needs. The Captain s Corner is located next to the Amwaj Marina club house and provides its members with diving, fishing, boating and cleaning equipment. The Amwaj Marina Management team launched Captain s Corner in May 2012, as a way to facilitate sailing excursions for their members by providing important equipment that initially had to be purchased outside Amwaj Islands. Equipments supplied are usually the most in demand, such as fishing items, oils, ropes and fenders. It was named the Captain s Corner due to its location and size, but future plans will include expansion of the place as well as providing a wider variety of items for the members to choose from. Heat exhaustion is a serious condition because it can rapidly advance to the next stage, heat stroke which can be fatal.

For the next few months we will be writing a monthly column in the Amwaj newsletter on some topics related to health. All information provided is from recognised sources and is advocated as International Best Practice Guidelines. As we are in the height of the summer months with soaring temperatures, we thought we would start with Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke. Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke Heat exhaustion is caused by a combination of exercise induced heat and fluid and electrolyte loss as sweat. Signs and symptoms may start suddenly and include: nausea, dizziness, muscle cramps feeling faint, headache, fatigue and heavy sweating. Heat exhaustion is a serious condition because it can rapidly advance to the next stage, heat stroke which can be fatal. This is evidenced recently by over 50 potentially heat stroke cases being treated within 24 hours at one of the main hospitals in Bahrain (Gulf Daily News, 2013). Our very own Amwaj Islander runs in Russia! Amwaj Islander Anastasia Ageeva represented Bahrain at one of the largest events in her home city, Ergo White Nights Marathon. More than 3000 participants gathered in Saint Petersburg, Russia at the famous Hermitage museum and Palace Square to participate in the marathon. Ms. Ageeva competed under the umbrella of the Kingdom to represent the local Bahrain Road Runners club, which organizes numerous marathons in Bahrain on a monthly basis. The inspirational run aimed to raise awareness for the residents of Bahrain in regards to fitness and taking care of their health and well-being. Ms. Ageeva is now forming a new Amwaj Islanders team for an upcoming charity event, the Bahrain Marathon Relay, which will take place at the end of October Amwaj Islanders willing to participate or require more information, contact Ms. Ageeva on anastasia.ageeva@gmail.com. Treatment of Heat Exhaustion Heat Exhaustion must be vigorously treated by having the victim lie down in a cool place; taking off as many clothes as possible; loosen the head scarf appropriately; cooling the victim with a cool water spray; encouraging the victim to drink cool fluids like water and drinks such as Pocari Sweat, which contain carbohydrates and electrolytes to replace lost electrolytes. Treatment of Heat Stroke Heat stroke includes all the symptoms of heat exhaustion plus dizziness, syncope (brief loss of consciousness), confusion & seizures. The most important action for a victim of heat stroke is to begin immediate cooling, preferably by immersing the victim up to the chin in cold water. It is also important to activate the Emergency services by calling 999. Heat stroke requires emergency treatment with Intravenous fluids administered by Ambulance staff or in an in hospital environment. *http;//circ.ahajournals.org/content/122/18_suppl_3/s934

Ms. Novik is the Owner and Creative Director of Palitra Studio, a home business where she teaches people to express themselves through visual art. The Palitra Studio is devoted to a rigorous and dynamic education in the visual arts, challenging students to think, research, produce, and teach art critically, with an awareness of historical as well as contemporary contexts. The Palitra Studio is committed to preparing students for careers in Studio Art, Art History and Art and Visual Culture Education in an increasingly diverse and technological world. The Russian national prides herself on teaching art in all its disciplines, regardless of age and skill level, and she can do so in the comfort of your own home. In addition to teaching, Ms. Novik paints for her clients, whether it is a family portrait or an abstract art painting, according to the clients taste. The artist has a bachelor s degree in art and is qualified in teaching fine arts. She is currently teaching Humanities in AMA University of Bahrain. Ms. Novik added, People say if you are an artist then you are talented since birth. Some geniuses don t need any education in that field, but I believe that every person should always study especially when they are really good at something, so they can become better. You can never be perfect enough. Ms. Novik has been passionate about art since she was eight years old, but started pursuing it professionally in University and achieving her first exhibition by the age of 18. Her daily routine consists of giving art classes to kids and adults, which she calls the Art Factory, as in Andy Warhol s Factory. The rest of her day is spent working on her art orders or creating her own paintings. The artist says to those who are just starting out, Never be afraid to express yourself, even if you are worried about what others think. It does not matter because it is the way you see it and the way you feel it. No one can feel it for you, so you just should just express yourself. Her favourite sayings in life are by her two favourite artists; the first being Vincent Van Gogh: I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process, and Andy Warhol s, Isn t life a series of images that change as they repeat themselves? It would be amazing if the Amwaj Marina Market was held all year round, even if it were indoors during the summer. Also, it would be nice to have local versions of the Farmers Market and the Bahrain Productive Families Market. An international food festival would be nice, whereby the various ethnic restaurants can showcase their culinary specialties. Which restaurant or café would you like to see opening in Amwaj? We love the local gourmet (even if it is a hole in the wall!). So if a Tabreez Seafood, or Mohammed Nour Bukhari, or Trin Trin Grills or Hijaz Bean were to open we would be thrilled. How would you describe Amwaj? A wonderful seaside community to call home, and make us feel like we are on vacation all year round. In your opinion, what makes Amwaj different to other projects in Bahrain? The level of development of Amwaj, and the location are both big selling points. Do you feel you have made the right decision moving to Amwaj? Definitely. I previously lived in Abraj Al Lulu in Manama, and although I loved the facilities, obviously the location became challenging. If you could change anything in Amwaj, what would it be? It would be nice to add a mosque in the vicinity. Also diversify The Lagoon a bit for example make the upper floors enclosed and air conditioned, and more focused on restaurants and retail, and limit the Shisha places to the lower floor. Lastly, an innovative idea would be to have a water taxi from Amwaj to Manama/Seef for work days, and evenings to Seef/Ritz/Coral Bay. What events do you look forward to in Amwaj? Residents should also be aware that problems arising behind the building line and in their accommodation area are also their responsibility including water, sewerage and electricity issues. Electricity supply issues are the responsibility of the Electricity Authorite and can be contacted on The Amwaj Security and Maintenance teams are responsible for the incidents listed below per category. Traffic accidents can be reported to police by calling 199 whereas burglary, domestic dispute, medical emergency, ambulance or fire department can be directed to 999, with the assistance of the Amwaj Security team. In the case of incidents such as trespassing, suspicious activity, anti-social behavior, illegal parking, damage to property, public dispute, theft or dangerous driving the Amwaj Security Team can be contacted on or The Amwaj Engineering department will assist the residents in accordance with the nature of incident.
