1 Making Waves Since Northern Avenue - Suite 304 West - Boston, MA Telephone: Better Beaches Program Report Friends of Lynn Heritage State Park - World Music Festival The region s underserved youth, teens and families who pay their share of the $5 billion cost of the Boston Harbor cleanup too often have limited access to the benefits of their investment. Save the Harbor/Save the Bay s Better Beaches Program shares Boston Harbor, the harbor islands and our region s public beaches with these underserved communities. Intertidal Artist Andres Amador - Art in the Sand In June, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay awarded more than $55,000 in Better Beaches Program small grants and additional organizational support to 27 organizations in 9 beachfront communities and waterfront neighborhoods from Nahant to Nantasket. In turn, these groups leveraged our funds to support 93 free concerts, fitness boot-camps, beach festivals, sand raking demonstrations, sand sculpting competitions, and circus performances on the sand. Revere Beach Partnership - International Sand Sculpting Festival These free events and programs have brought new and diverse audiences to our region s public beaches and have generated new enthusiasm and support for their beaches and our work among the nearly 50 organizations that we have supported since Hull Lifesaving Museum - Harbor Illumination Festival To learn more about Save the Harbor s Better Beaches Program, please visit our blog, Sea, Sand & Sky at and our website
2 Better Beaches Program Dear Friend of Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, December 4, 2017 Dorchester 2017 As the region s leading voice for Boston Harbor, we believe that one of the most effective ways to save the harbor is to share the harbor with the public through free events and programs that create a constituency for continued investment in Boston Harbor, the harbor islands and the region s public beaches. To fulfill this mission, Save the Harbor launched our Better Beaches Program in 2008 to help local communities and beaches friends groups create and sustain free events and activities on the region s public beaches from Nahant to Nantasket, as recommended by the Metropolitan Beaches Commission, which we help lead and manage for the Legislature. Nantasket 2017 South Boston 2017 Winthrop 2017 Over the past 9 years, our community partners in Nahant, Lynn, Revere, Winthrop, East Boston, South Boston, Dorchester, Quincy, and Hull have leveraged $683,956 in small grants received from Save the Harbor/Save the Bay with $2,352,557 in cash and in-kind contributions from local government and small businesses for a total investment of $3,036,513 in 484 free events and programs for the region s residents and visitors alike. Funds for the 2017 Better Beaches Program were raised entirely at Save the Harbor s annual Harpoon Shamrock Splash-- an event where brave beachlovers plunged into the chilly water at the BCYF Curley Community Center on March 5th to raise money for these important free events and programs in their communities. As a result of the success of the Harpoon Shamrock Splash, in 2017 Save the Harbor/Save the Bay alongside the Department of Conservation and Recreation awarded more than $55,000 in Better Beaches Program small grants and additional organizational support to 27 organizations in 9 beachfront communities and waterfront neighborhoods. These groups in turn leveraged our funds with $434,492 in cash and in-kind support from local government and businesses and more than 9,000 volunteer hours to support 93 free concerts, fitness boot camps, beach festivals, sand raking demonstrations, sand sculpting competitions, and circus performances on our region s public beaches. On behalf of Save the Harbor s Board of Directors and our staff, Bruce and I want to thank you for your support. Together we have provided unique opportunities for the public to enjoy the region s fantastic beaches and harbor. All the best, Revere 2017 Patricia A. Foley and Bruce Berman Save the Harbor/Save the Bay
