1 Page 1 of 7 Parks and Recreation Department City Council Report City Council Meeting of October 17, 2011 Aquatic and Fitness Center Membership The membership statistics for the Aquatic and Fitness Center as of September 30, 2011 show 2153 membership packages representing 3633 individual members. This is an increase of 259 membership packages compared to September of September was a busy month for the AFC. The Center hosted the East Coast Volkswagen NMB Triathlon; the Basil s Pizza Family Fun Run, the NMB High School Swim Meet Invitational, and the Guinness Book World Record Shag Dance and participated in Irish Italian International Festival. In addition, Diane Bartlett, Assistant Director received the United States Masters Swimming Kerry O Brien Coaches award at the USMS National Convention in Jacksonville Florida. See attached press release. After extensive evaluation of building usage and membership request it was determined that beginning November 4, the AFC will close on Friday nights at 9 pm and will open on Saturday mornings at 7 am Packages as of January Packages as of February Packages as of March Packages as of April Packages as of May Packages as of June Packages as of July Packages as of August Packages as of September Packages as of October Packages as of November Packages as of December Aquatic Programs 3639 swimmers participated for the month of September. This includes 925 lap swimmers, 1677 recreational swimmers, and 1037 participants in water fitness classes.
2 Page 2 of 7 Swim Teams The AFC Dolphins swim team practicing M, W & F with 29 participants. The Grand Strand Masters Swim Team continues to practice Monday, Wednesday, & Saturday. The team and the Aquatic & Fitness Center received national recognition at the US Masters Swimming annual conference in Jacksonville, Florida (September 14-17) for their initiation of a free swimming lesson program for our community Swimming Saves Lives. North Myrtle Beach High School swim team practice Mon-Thur. with 7:00 & 7:30 start times. Swimming Lessons Session 1 Saturday lessons began on Sept. 17 th with 22 participants enrolled Next T/TH fall lessons will begin 10/4. September Events AFC hosted North Myrtle Beach High School Invitational Swim Meet 9/10/11 The East Coast Volkswagen Triathlon in NMB was held Saturday, September 10 th with over 220 competitors participating. Public Safety and volunteer support was outstanding, touting this as one of the best supported ever as stated by Jeremy Davis, event manager. October Events AFC hosted the High School Region 3A & 4A swim meet 10/1/11. The Pumpkin Head Swim Meet for the Grand Strand Recreational Swim League will be held 10/22/11. The Aquatic & Fitness Center Dolphins will host and compete in this meet. The AFC will host the NMB Primary School special needs class for swimming on 10/20/11. Fitness Programs Land class participation: 2663 Class average: September 2010 Land class participation: 2124 Class average: 13 Fitness Usage Total of 9,985 visits September 2010 total of 9,066 visits Child Watch Program Averaged 9 participants in the morning program Total visits (pre-school started after Labor day) Averaged 4 participants in the evening program Total - 96 visits
3 Page 3 of 7 Gymnasium totaled 5 children. Adult gym participation average was 12 with a total of 164 visits. There are 17 children for After School program Events Member birthday party September 16th -18 people in attendance. 5 th Annual Basil s Pizza Family Fun Run- September 9, 2011-had 332 participants had 127 participants. As a result from the success of the Basil s Pizza Family Fun Run North Myrtle Beach Middle School P.E. program, received a $300 check for having the most students participate in the event. Customer Service Total Tours: 58 Number of In-State Tours: 44 Number of Out-of-State Tours: 14 Number that joined: 9 AFC Special Events The AFC will host the Beach Blast Wheelchair basketball tournament at J. Bryan Floyd Community Center October 7-9. There will be an All Star game October 7 from 7 pm 8:30pm with tournament play to begin October 8 at 9 am 5 pm and then again October 8 at 9 am- 1pm. In addition, AFC along with Sports Mobility Network will host the Second Annual Adaptive Sports Festival from 9 am 12 pm at J. Bryan Floyd Community Center. This event is free and open to persons with physical disabilities of all ages. Recreation Athletics Fall Baseball / Softball We have 65 kids registered for our first fall baseball / softball season. Practices and games will begin in October. Fall Sports As part of a national Chevrolet program, Jud Kuhn Chevrolet is sponsoring our fall soccer season. Along with a $500 donation, they have provided soccer equipment for the children in our league. Soccer, flag football, cheerleading, tennis and volleyball leagues are starting up. Practice and games will begin in October and run until mid-november. All game and practice schedules have been uploaded to our website. We also make any weather announcements on our Facebook and twitter pages.
4 Page 4 of 7 Sports Tourism Held one AAU baseball tournament with 6 teams participating in September at Central Park. We have four more weekend tournaments scheduled before the end of the year. Met with the NCSI staff and continued planning for next year s spring training events. NCSI Director Bob Gentile recently relocated to NMB along with this family. In the process of securing an additional 2 years on our current USBA contract. This would ensure the USBA national championships are brought to NMB through Continued meeting with associations / organizations about the new park. We are hoping to begin negotiations with the different associations after we finalize the design for the new park. The goal is to have the 2014 tournament schedule completed a year in advance of the opening date. Miscellaneous In the process of setting up an Adult Soccer League. A trail league would run this November. If successful, we would begin offering a spring and fall adult soccer league beginning in Basketball Winter basketball registration begins in October. September 9 Gnomeo & Juliet (G) October 14 Rango (PG) **This is in partnership with Horry County Parks & Recreation Irish Italian International Festival 9/24/11 Total of 88 Vendors (A/C, Prof, NP, Restaurant)
5 Page 5 of 7 Extended festival area, making foot traffic flow much better Brentwood Restaurant won Best Dessert Logan s won Best Decorated Krave Bagel won best Entrée Keep North Myrtle Beach Beautiful Committee Appearance Award: Robber s Roost condo entrance was nominated and approved for the October Community Appearance Award, to be presented on Tuesday, October 4, Education Committee Report: KAB Kids met on September 8, 2011 with 25 members enrolled. Eco Kids will meet on September 14, KAB Cadets will take part in the Beach Sweep on Saturday, September 17, High School youth are signing up to help with KNMBB activities. Beach Sweep Cleanup The Annual Beach Sweep / Creek Sweep were held on Saturday September 17, The marsh and Beach cleanup attracted well over 200 volunteers. The majority of the volunteers were students from the NMB schools. Over 2 dumpsters of trash were picked up. Beach Sweep 5K Beach Run The annual Beach Sweep 5k run was held on Saturday September 17 th. The beach run started and finished at 1 st Ave. South on the beach. The event attracted about 100 runners from the area. This event was managed by the grand Strand Running Club. Irish Italian International Festival Members of the NMB High School youth groups affiliated with KNMBB assisted with recycling and trash pick up at the festival. The students also helped with many other jobs. We had over 100 students volunteer with the festival. Upcoming KNMBB Events Endless Summer festival on October 29 th City Wide Cleanup on November 5 th. Youth Volleyball Our youth volleyball program is in full swing with games and practices on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday Mornings. We have 34 girls in this program and several of the high school players coach and officiate in this program. Their season will go through November 6, 2011.
6 Page 6 of 7 Beach Services Beach Services continues to rent umbrellas and chairs on an as-needed basis. The additional shoulder season income helps cover payroll for employees that are needed for end-of-season duties such as cleaning, repair, & storage of rental equipment, repair of Lifeguard Stands, and configuring the warehouse for winter. Plans are already underway for the 2012 season. Parks and Public Grounds Scheduled Projects and Activities Beach Assist Beach Services with take down of Hippo Slide Install handicap access mat at 2 nd south walkway Continue assembling and installing new beach access, street end and golf cart parking signs. (100% assembled, 97% installed) Repair lights at Towers on the Grove Park Recreation Logistical support for Music on Main and Sounds of Summer concerts, AFC Fun Run and Triathlon and Irish Italian International Festival Medians and Right of Ways Finalize re-do of landscape at North sign including grading, decorative retaining wall construction and electrical infrastructure, irrigation installation, seeding, sodding and planting Hazard remediation at 13 th S and Perrin, 4604 Surf St, 9 th S and Edge and 26 th north Herbicide application to woody plant material at Buffkin MHP ditch Landscape Renovation to Main Street medians and right-of-way beds Parks and Grounds Soccer and flag football field layout, preparation and equipment placement Street Department re-route of parking lot drain at Central Park fields #1 and #2 Pre and post emergency weed control Monthly playground inspections Paint over graffiti at McLean Park and 8 th North beach access Pressure wash all picnic shelters and trash receptacles Install informational sign at McLean Park Lake about plantings on bank Remove damaged slide at Central Park. Replace with alternative panel
