We really hope that you are just as excited as we are. Since everyone is computer and technology savvy these days, we figured that it was time for us to join the Facebook and Twitter worlds. We post all upcoming events, registration periods for various sports and activities that are available for our community, game cancellations, and any changes that should be made at the last minute. It is a quick and easy way to get the latest news from the Parks & Recreation Department! We look forward to having you as one of our likes or followers. 2 Orangeburg Senior Games Scheduled for October 18th & 20th 200th Anniversary Celebration of the Noi- sette Rose The City of Orangeburg Parks & Recreation Department and the Orangeburg County Council on Aging have joined together to present a wonderful activity for senior adults. The Sixteenth Annual Orangeburg Senior Games will be held at the Orangeburg County Council Aging on October 18th & October 20th. The Games are open to men and women ages 50 and over throughout the state of South Carolina. Bingo and Cake Walks will be offered on October 18th. Activities for October 20th include disc golf, where participants throw a disc trying to land it inside a hula hoop, and spin casting -- an activity where you use a spinning rod and throw a plug at a target for your score. Competitions will also take place in horseshoes, basketball free throw, treadmill/stationary bike, table tennis, a softball throw and more. This program is as much for the recreational athlete as it is for the competitive athlete. We will offer passive events along with the athletic events so that there will be something available for all senior adults. Registration material will be available by September 1. To receive a form by mail, call Brittany Hartzog at (803) The City of Orangeburg s Parks and Recreation Department along with the South Carolina Rose Society hosted the celebration in August Folks got to see and hear 200 years of Noisette rose and Noisette family history. Being the only class of roses created in North America and South Carolina to be exact, rose lovers from Virginia, Tennessee, and all parts of South Carolina attended this day-long event. Bill Patterson of Roses Unlimited spoke about the different varieties of Noisettes and some of their offspring. He even educated that new Noisettes, those varieties that have appeared in the 20 th Century, are considered Old Garden Roses. Jay Hiers from the Parks and Recreation Department discussed the various sizes that Noisette roses can get. Marily Williams of the American Rose Society informed the crowd on why old roses should be preserved for the future. The day ended with keynote speaker, Margaret (Peggy) Noisette Merrell Clement, a 7 th generation descendant of Philippe Noisette. Peggy Clement mentioned how Philippe and his wife Celestine had to flee Haiti during a period of unrest and landed in Charleston, SC around It was this chance landing that Philippe met John Champney and a friendship was formed. Philippe had given John a china rose, Old Blush and it was crossed with Rosa Mouschata. This lead to the creation of Champney s Pink Cluster in Being of a peculiar habit, John Champney gave Philippe Noisette cuttings and seeds from this rose and sent them over to France. From there the rose was crossed and gave way to the modern roses we see today.

Davis, Athletic Supervisor Basketball, Adult Sports, and Football Brittany Hartzog, Program Supervisor Leisure Programs Website: Follow us on Twitter: OburgParksRec Facebook Page: City of Orangeburg Parks and Recreation Department Phone number: Fax number: Directors Corner I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. The Recreation Division is in full swing with soccer, football, cheerleading, clogging, and senior bingo and exercise. Special events are also in the planning stages for the fall. Can it be that Christmas is just around the corner? Believe it or not, our maintenance staff will begin to erect the displays for the Children s Garden Christmas and Kid s Walk in October. See if you can spot the two new displays that will be added this year. There are four projects that will be completed in the near future. Included is the construction of a replica log cabin, designed to replace the original park office in the Gardens. This project is being completed by the City s Service Department. Also included is the renovation of the sensory garden, the addition of nine holes on the disc golf course, and renovations at Mirmow Field. The recent unveiling ceremony of six granite naming panels in the Veterans Memorial Park was certainly an emotional event as these naming panels identified individuals from Orangeburg County that made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our county in various wars. This was an outstanding and meaningful addition to the Veterans Memorial Park, located in the Gardens. -Buster Smith
