1 The Doheny UPDATE FEBRUARY 2018 If URL links do not work when clicked on, copy and paste them into your browser. We simply need that wild country available to us, even if we never do more than drive to its edge and look in. For it can be a means of reassuring ourselves of our sanity as creatures, a part of the geography of hope. Wallace Stegner, Western historian/author, DSBIA TO PAINT ANOTHER WHALE: DSBIA will be looking for volunteer painters to help repaint one or two of our current whales on the Whale Walk, and adding a sperm whale and perhaps a baby gray to our pod during the Dana Point Festival of Whales. If that s you and/or your kids, plan on bringing your paint clothes down to the park on Sunday morning, March 4 th (depending on weather, Saturday, March 10 th is our back up date), maybe a brush or a roller and pan, and joining us. Further information will come in the March UPDATEs. Questions? us at info@dohenystatebeach.org. SAINT VALENTINE S LOVE YOUR BEACH CLEAN UP: Our first beach clean up of 2018 is on Saturday, February 17th. Join us from 9 AM to Noon as we love Doheny clean after the runoffs from the first winter rains. All beach clean ups meet at the lifeguard headquarters building by San Juan Creek. Please bring work gloves to protect you hands. Sign offs for middle school or high school community volunteer hours available. WHALE OF A BEACH CLEAN UP IN MARCH: Join us from 9 to noon on Saturday, March 10 as we celebrate the return of the majestic migratory gray whales by getting the debris off the beach before it washes out to sea to pose a threat to marine life. The clean up is from 9:00 AM-Noon. We meet at the lifeguard headquarters don t forget work gloves. Sign offs for middle school or high school community volunteer hours available SEASONAL LIFEGUARD TRYOUTS: Lifeguard tryouts for this coming summer will be held at San Clemente State Beach on Saturday, March 3 rd. For more information, go to See a video of what to expect in lifeguard training:
2 CONGRATULATIONS DSBIA BOARD MEMBER DONNA KALEZ! DSBIA Board of Directors member Donna Kalez was named Dana Point Citizen of the Year for her many contributions to the Dana Point community. Donna is manager of Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching in Dana Point Harbor and is deeply involved in numerous groups and activities through her leadership in the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce. DSBIA is honored and proud to have such an excellent representative of the community on our Board of Directors. CONGRATULATIONS, DONNA!!! PHOTO FROM OC REGISTER NEW RESIDENTS IN THE VISITOR CENTER: We re happy to welcome two new critters to our Visitor Center s aqua exhibits. There is now a second leopard shark in our tide pool and another lobster in our reef tank. Come on in and say Hello. FREE 2018 HIGH & LOW TIDE BOOKS NOW AVAILABLE IN THE VISITOR CENTER WHALE WATCH CREW RESCUES A DOLPHIN: Our friends at Dana Wharf SportFishing and Whale Watching rescued a young dolphin whose tail was tangled up in kite string. See the video at Thanks to both whale watch groups working out of Dana Harbor for their efforts in protecting the whales and dolphins off our coast. WHAT S BALEEN? Baleen is made out of keratin, the same protein that makes up our fingernails and hair. Baleen whales, such as the gray whales, have about 600 baleen plates in their upper jaws, which act like a strainer as the whales feed. Hairs on the baleen plates catch the fish and plankton. Some whales eat about one ton (2,000 lbs.) of fish each day. That s the weight of a large car! You can tell if you see a baleen whale by their blowholes. All baleen whales have two blowholes visible on the top of their heads. Toothed whales have only one. Doheny has a piece of baleen on display in the Visitor Center.

When you begin listing equipment you need for camping, at the top of the list is probably a tent. Here s a very comprehensive article on things to consider when making the purchase of that essential camping item. HIGH TIDES LOW TIDES: We re in the middle of the months of highest and lowest daytime tides. We ve already had our highest / lowest tides of 2018 in January. On January 2 nd, we had a high tide of +7.5 feet and a low tide of -2.0 feet. That s a vertical difference of nearly 10 feet of water. Here s a link to a very good article explaining our tides by our friends at the Ocean Institute. You may need to copy/paste this URL into your browser.
