3 Hello Sharks Family! A Word from Your President May 2013 The board and I would like to extend a warm welcome back to the returning Sharks and a huge welcome to our new swimmers. We are very excited to start another great summer at Dahlgren and with the RSL. We have a very busy schedule and are ready to get started. I know with everyone s participation we will have a fun and successful season. This is my first year as president so feel free to give me pointers. I am lucky to have such a great board that I am working with that come to me with a wealth of knowledge of swimming and about the Dahlgren Sharks. I would like to thank them for all of their work over the winter and all that we have left to do to make this a great 2013 season. We are very happy to announce that Coach Guthrie has come back for her 16 th year are our head coach. Also returning are Christiana and Alexandra Bentz. This will be their first year of only coaching. We will miss seeing them in the pool but are extremely happy that they will be on the pool deck coaching and providing such great instruction and team sprit to our young swimmers. As many of you know there have been some changes and budget cuts at the base. The pool hours have changed and that does affect us. The pool will open just for us on Mondays and Tuesdays. We will be starting practices an hour later on those dates. We tried to get all of the times moved so it would not be confusing but that was not possible. Also we will be the ONLY people in the pool. The guards will be watching us and reporting any misconduct. We have had to implement a new safety policy which you can read about in the handbook. This policy was put in place as a compromise between the board and the pool staff. I feel that we have great kids and I know it will not be a problem. Please remember that this is a volunteer organization and without everyone s help this team is not possible. If you don t know or are not confident that you can do one of the positions please just ask. I am sure we can find a job for everyone. We do have a new T-shirt design!!!! Our own Brittany Burrell designed our new shark!!! T-shirts will be available for purchase at registration and again at the first of the season. I will not always be on the pool deck during practices (I have to work) so if you have questions or concerns or comments good or bad please feel free to call me or me. 4 A Word from Your Head Coach May 2013 Dear Dahlgren Shark Parents and Swimmers: Welcome to the 2013 Dahlgren Sharks!! This is my 16th year as head coach of the team and I am looking forward to another great season!! Everyone worked very hard last year, the team showed growth, and, above all, we had fun! All of the swimmers on our team are great team players! This past winter I continued teaching at Potomac Elementary, but, again, because of other commitments was not able to help coach the high school swim team. However, most of the members of KGHS swim team are also members of the Dahlgren Sharks. So as always, we have a lot to look forward to this summer. Christiana and Alexandria Bentz will again be lending their expertise and experience as my wonderful assistant coaches. I look forward to working with them. All of the Shark swimmers enjoy their enthusiasm and positive attitude. They are very accomplished swimmers and coaches, and are former Sharks and KGHS swimmers; and have experience swimming with the Raiders year round team, as well. Please note the practice times in this year s handbook. Regular attendance shows a commitment to the team and helps keep us strong. Please make sure your swimmer comes to practice ready to swim. In particular, when we are practicing after school, it is important for swimmers to realize that they must get changed as quickly as possible and be on deck for warm-ups at the times indicated. We have to make the best of these practice times. Please be patient. We cannot waste time! Also, please be sure your swimmer brings a water bottle and a healthy snack! Bringing a water bottle is extremely important once the weather warms up. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to give me a call at or send an to eguth67@gmail.com. 7 Welcome The primary goal and purpose of the Dahlgren Sharks Swim Team is to get the children in the local area swimming! We want them to ENJOY swimming, enjoy spending time with their friends, participate in a community event, encourage them to achieve goals, and make them safe around water! We want them to improve in their swimming skills, show team spirit, learn a life skill, and energize them! It's a summer education worth having fun over! As many children as possible swim in regular dual meets to allow them the opportunity to qualify for Finals. We look forward to having another winning season. Welcome to the 2013 Dahlgren Sharks! For New Swim Team Families Welcome to the wonderful world of swimming. Now what? Now get involved. Parents are needed to fill many volunteer positions to run a swim meet. Your help is needed to ensure the team grows and prospers. At times, it will seem as though the swim meet will go on forever. However, if you are involved as a parent volunteer, time will fly. You will also gain a better understanding of the sport in which your child is involved. There are volunteer positions available for new swim team parents having little or no previous swim team experience. Some of these positions are timers, runners, concessions, score keeping, ribbon writing, and clerk of the course. Also, if you re interested in filling any of these positions see page 7 for descriptions of each. Rappahannock Swim League offers clinics for those positions that require training. You can find dates and locations of the clinics on the Shark Website: and the RSL Website: A Swim meet is structured so that swimmers of similar ages compete against each other. Events are made up of the following swimming strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, individual medley (IM), and relays. Seeding is the process of placing individual swimmers in heats within an event. All heats are seeded based upon the swimmers times in that particular event. In other words, your child will be swimming against other children of similar ability. 7

8 Fees and Registration Process Registration fees are as follows: 1 st swimmer - $ nd swimmer - $ rd + swimmer - $65.00 For those of you returning to the Shark Fest this year, you may access and download the registration packet from our Sharks Web Site: Please note that the registration includes parents signing up to participate in swim meets no less than six times. Please see the section on Family Participation for more detail. Please state your preference for position, date and preferred half of the meet. Upon completion of the Registration packet, either bring the completed forms to one of the registration dates (April 30 th and May 7 th, 5pm to 7pm at the King George YMCA) or mail it along with your payment to: The Board will process and confirm receipt. Dahlgren Sharks P.O. Box 1852 Dahlgren, VA All NEW Shark Participants, you must bring the Registration packet and Swimmer(s) to the King George YMCA on either of the designated registration days (April 30th or May 7 th arrive any time between 5pm-7pm) as they will have to undergo a swimming assessment with the Sharks Coaches. There will be a "CAP" placed on all age levels. What this means is that only 18 swimmers per gender per age category will be allowed. This will be done on a First Come First Served basis. For those that miss out on registration due to the categories being filled, we will put you on a waiting list. This "CAP" is being instituted to ensure fairness to all of the swimmers within their age category to allow each swimmer the opportunity to be able to swim multiple events. The age categories are as follows: 6 & under Male (18) Female (18), 7/8 Male (18) Female (18), 9/10 Male (18) Female (18), 11/12 Male (18) Female (18), 13/14 Male (18) Female (18), Male (18) Female (18), The age group in which a competitor swims will be determined by his/her age as of 01 June of the current swim year. For example, a competitor who turns 19 after the 01 June cutoff is still eligible to swim for that season. Refunds will be provided, on a prorated basis, up until the 1 st meet. If a swimmer withdraws after the 1 st meet, all funds are forfeit. 8

9 NSWC Dahlgren Division Access Policy The base access policy is as follows: 1. All swimmers and Guardians must be on an access list. 2. If spectators are coming in later than the swimmer the parent is responsible for meeting that guest at the gate. 3. We need to know if you have a Military ID, Base badge or government issued ID card (i.e,. CAC Card) please note this on your registration form. Please Note, MWR has instituted the following parking procedures. During practice, Aquatic Center Parking is for dropping kids off only. There will be no parking on the road next to Craftech or in marked Youth Activities Center (YAC) spaces. Parking in front of the pool for meets is still allowed. Thank you for your Cooperation! *NEW* Safety Policy For The Aquatics Center Children must have adult supervision at all times. They will not be allowed to linger at the facility if an adult is not present. Please remind your child(ren) of the rules: Do not run on the pool deck Do not jump on the pool furniture Do not climb the trees. Do not enter the cool pool Your child may play in the grassy area outside the pool deck within the fence. A policy has been initiated by the pool to ensure safe conduct. Lifeguards will alert the child and a coach of a child s misconduct. A log will be kept of this. If misconduct is reported two times, the child will no longer be allowed in the facility before or after their swim practice time. 9

10 Swim Gear Team swimsuits are not mandatory. However, we will be sizing for swimsuits at time of registration and throughout the season for those interested in purchasing a team swimsuit. We are purchasing our suits from AgonSwim.com with the print "Shark Attack" as seen above. The sharks will be purple. The fabric we chose is MaxResist: knitted 83% polyester, 17% Spandex, 210 grams per sq. meter. It is denser & more resilient than Lycra. Prices are as follows: MaxResist Jammer (male suit): $30 MaxResist (Thin or Thick Straps) Fully Front Lined (female suit): $48 Swimsuit and goggle orders will be taken at registration. Some recommendations on caring for your swim gear will be available at registration. Please read and follow these directions. Other Sharks Team apparel will also be available to order during registration including swim caps, decals, tee-shirts, and sweatshirts. 10

11 Team Rules OUR GOAL IS TO SHOW A POSITIVE ATTITUDE, SWIM OUR BEST, AND HAVE FUN! To ensure a safe environment, all rules of the aquatic center must be followed. Show respect to all swimmers and coaches. Listen and follow all coaches directions. DO NOT leave the pool without the permission from one of the coaches unless your practice session has ended. Swimmers are not excused from practice (which means do not leave the deck of pool area) until dismissed by one of the coaches. (Swimmers not accompanied by a parent, need a note to leave practice early). DO NOT leave trash lying around (pick up after yourself) in the locker room, practice area, and during dual meets, both home and away Bring healthy snacks and water bottles to practice, especially during the after school practices. IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER: SHOW RESPECT and ALWAYS demonstrate good sportsmanship, especially at dual meets. It is recommended that all swimmers and coaches find someone from the other team and wish them good luck. Assistant Coaches will lead cheers before each meet. Swimmers are encouraged to participate and to cheer for their teammates during dual meets. AND LASTLY Unkind or disrespectful behavior at practices or dual meets is UNACCEPTABLE and will be dealt with immediately. FINALLY SMILE AND HAVE FUN! 11

12 Family Participation It takes at least 59 parent volunteers to successfully conduct a swim meet at home (including first and second half). We require all parents, new and experienced alike, to sign up and help conduct the meets. To handle all the work that must be done at each meet, it is MANDATORY that at least one parent of each family participate at least six times throughout the season. Each half counts as a single participant time slot. If a person is not able to support an event that they signed up for, they are responsible for finding a replacement and then notifying the current Dahlgren Sharks secretary. Exceptions will be made for extenuating circumstances. Special arrangements are made so that parents can break free to watch their children compete. To reiterate, Participation is MANDATORY. Please remember that successful, efficient meets depend on all parents helping throughout the swim season. Please pitch in as best you can! Rappahannock Swim League offers clinics for those positions that require training. You can find dates and locations of the clinics on the RSL Website ( and in the Clinics section of this handbook. We will fill positions for finals at a later date. Descriptions of Positions for Swim Meets *Referee: The individual responsible for the meet. No disqualifications are valid until the referee signs the DQ form. All disputes are immediately referred to the referee for final resolution. *Starter: The starter issues the starting commands to the swimmers. The starter will use either a strobe light with a horn or a starter s pistol. *Stroke and Turn Judges: These judges ensure each swimmer executes turns and swims stroke in accordance with league rules. If you would like to be a stroke & turn official, but you find the online enrollment fee to be a financial burden, please speak to one of our board members, and we'll try to get donated or designated money for this. *Head Timer: Ensures all lanes have correct number of Timers present, all have stop watches, pencils, and clipboards. Reviews all rules and policies with volunteer Timers prior to meet start time. Acts as back-up to volunteer Timers when/if a malfunction occurs. Has authority to replace Volunteer Timer if a continual problem occurs with lack of attention or major askew in time with fellow timers of that lane. Timers: Use stop watches to time individual swimmers in a race. Ensuring the correct swimmer is in the correct lane for the event and recording the swimmers times on cards picked up by the runner. Remember, if you are using the strobe start system, starters must look for the light, and not listen for the sound of the horn. 12

13 Runners: Carry event cards from each swimmer to the timers and from the timer to the scorekeepers. *Clerk of Course Lead: Assign swimmers to lanes and give them their event cards before each event. The only exception is Relays that are provided by the Head Coach. Clerk of Course Team: Assist the Lead Clerk Of Course with ordering swimmers in accordance with event, heat, and lane. Announcer: Announce events to the crowd during the meet, including the score, swimmers needed reporting to clerk of course, and any other special announcements. Scorers and Checkers: Copy times from event cards into the meet software, check that the times are accurately computed, and print and QA the scores ensuring they reflect times that were recorded on heat cards. Ribbon writers: Put winners' name labels onto their ribbons. Food concession: This will entail selling candy, snow cones, and other sundries. Set-up and clean-up will be required for this as well. Set up/clean up: Before home meets, assist with setting up equipments (chairs, clerk of course section, announcer section, scorer section, etc). After home meets, ensure we leave the pool and deck clean. *These positions require training and information may be found at There is also some work to be done keeping the team running smoothly during the season. Participating parents handle data entry; organize fundraising and special events, and other tasks between meets. We will need parent representation at Executive Board meetings. We would like to organize a telephone tree in case we hear about last-minute schedule changes. There's room for you to get involved in many ways. Contact the team Secretary to offer services between swim meets. We need ALL parents to volunteer to ensure successful swim meets for our Children. Unless otherwise notified, except for RSL Finals, all meets start at 1800 (6pm). Swimmers should be at the pool at 1630 (4:30pm) for home meets, and 1645 (4:45pm) for away meets. Changing into swimsuits on the pool deck is NOT permitted. Cancellation of Meets Meets are not normally canceled unless there are ongoing lightning and thunderstorms. RSL rules state, Once a meet is suspended due to adverse weather conditions, the meet should be rescheduled when cumulative weather delays exceed one (1) hour. Such a decision should not be made prior to 7:30pm. A suspended meet cannot be restarted after 10:00pm. Until word is given that the meet has been canceled, please wait in your cars. If the meet is cancelled, policy for the Sharks home meets, meet will recommence the following evening. Occasionally we get caught when a thunderstorm causes RSL officials to cancel a meet while we are in our cars on the way to the meet. We will do our best to get on the phone as early as possible if this happens. We have established an account on KGALERT for the Dahlgren Sharks Swim Team to notify our members of cancellation and/or changes. We will be notifying you via this feature of any/all practice and meet cancellations or changes as needed. For all current users of the KGALERT system, log into the system and subscribe to the Dahlgren Sharks Swim Team group. 15 Directions to Meets/Training DAHLGREN (our home pool) 6 LANES, 25 YARD POOL Take Dahlgren Road, Rt. 206 east through Dahlgren. Enter the main gate of NSWC showing PICTURE I.D. Continue 4 blocks to a right turn on Jenkins Road at the Credit Union. Right on Jenkins, continue 2 blocks. Dahlgren Aquatics Center Indoor Pool is on the right. Parking can be found at the Credit Union after 5 p.m., along right side of Jenkins Road, past the pool in the parking lot on the right across the parade field. Do not park in the residential area across from the pool or in CrafTech parking lot. Park only in designated (lined) parking spaces. NOTE**Because of the entrance requirements to the base, you may want to allow extra time. Be aware that random security checks are made on cars. Valid ID will be required at the front gate. AUSTIN RIDGE - 6 LANE, 25 METER POOL 27 Boulder Dr., Stafford, VA DIRECTIONS: Take I95 North to Exit 140 (Courthouse Road). Turn left at light at the end of the ramp. Go under I95 and through the next light. Turn right on to Austin Ridge Drive at the next light (across from VDOT Lot). Take the 4 th left onto Scotland Circle. Follow Scotland Circle around to Gunston, which is the 2nd street on your LEFT. The pool is straight ahead on Boulder. There are two parking lots available, the pool house parking lot, and right next door, at the community center. Street parking is allowed but only on one side, as follows: On BOULDER (the street the pool is on), please only park on the pool side of the street. On GUNSTON (where the tennis courts are) please park only on the tennis court side of the street. On SCOTLAND the street is wider, so parking is allowed on both sides. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. CHANCELLOR - 5 LANE, 25 YARD POOL DIRECTIONS: From I-95 take Route 3 west past the Spotsylvania Mall approximately 4 miles (through 11 stop lights). Just past the Chancellor Elementary School look for the "Chancellor Pool" sign on your left. Make a U-Turn at the second left past Chancellor Elementary then turn right into the pool entrance. Ample parking and deck space. CURTIS PARK 6 LANE, 25 METER POOL 58 Jesse Curtis Ln., Stafford, VA DIRECTIONS: Starting from (I95) at exit 133B: You will be on Hwy 17 after the exit. Go towards Warrenton (north/west) approximately 6 miles and turn the light onto SR- 705/SR-612 (Hartwood Rd.) Go approximately 2 miles and turn RIGHT onto Jesse Curtis Ln. The pool/parking lot is approximately ½ mile back on the LEFT. Ample parking and deck space. FOX POINT - 6 LANE, 25 METER POOL 6120 Blackstone Blvd, Fredericksburg, VA DIRECTIONS: To Fox Point Pool from 95 North or South: Take exit 126 (Massapponax) onto Rte. 1 North. Go approximately 1 mile. Turn left onto Rte. 208 (Courthouse Rd.). Go 3.6 miles. Turn left onto Rte. 628 (Smith Station). Go almost 1 mile and turn left into Fox Point Subdivision. Go straight, the pool will be on your right with parking lot, clubhouse, playground. Ample parking and deck space. 15

16 HAMPTON OAKS - 6 LANE, 25 METER POOL 80 Northampton Blvd, Stafford, VA Coming from Fredericksburg on I-95. Take the Stafford (exit 140) exit. At the bottom of the exit ramp turn left to go west on Courthouse Rd. At the second light (opposite the commuter lot) turn right on Austin Ridge Rd. Follow Austin Ridge Rd to the point where it merges into Mine Rd. Follow Mine road for about 1 mile to the first light at Northampton Blvd. Turn left on North Hampton Blvd. The Community Center is on the corner of North Hampton and Mine Rd. (Mapquest does not show Austin Ridge Road complete to Courthouse road but it is!) HOPYARD FARMS - 6 LANE, 25 METER POOL From Fredericksburg: Merge right onto Rt. 3 towards King George. Go straight through light at Ferry Farms. Go straight through light at Sealston/Fletcher's Chapel Road. Take a right at the next light, Port Conway Rd (approx. 4 miles from Sealston light). Take the second right, onto Hopyard Rd. Continue straight until you reach the Hopyard Farm Club House, pool in behind the Club House. From Dahlgren/King George: Take Rt. 301, Rt. 205 or Rt. 206 to Rt. 3 going towards Fredericksburg. Pass straight through lights at Food Lion, Citizen Center, and Fire House. Take a left at the next light, Port Conway Rd. (Approx. 2 miles). Take the second right, onto Hopyard Rd. Continue straight until you reach the Hopyard Farm Club House, pool in behind the Club House. LAKE WILDERNESS - 6 LANE, 25 METER POOL Jackson's Ford Road, Spotsylvania, VA DIRECTIONS: From I - 95 take Route 3 West towards Culpeper. Go app. 9 miles and make a left onto Route 621. Go about 2 1/2 miles to the stop sign. Go straight about 1/2 mile to the 2nd Lake Wilderness entrance on the right. Turn right onto Lake Wilderness Park Drive. Go about 1.1 miles to Pickett and make a right. Follow Pickett about.6 miles to the Clubhouse which will be on your left. As you near the top of the hill, you will see parking to the right of the Clubhouse. This is a small parking area, so look for signs designating other areas to park. PLEASE OBEY SPEED LIMIT SIGNS, 25 mph until you turn onto PICKETT then 15 mph to the pool. RADAR IS ENFORCED. LEELAND STATION - 6 LANE, 25 METER POOL 115 Riggs Road, Fredericksburg, VA DIRECTIONS: Going south on I-95 take exit 136. Keep left at the fork on the exit ramp. Turn left at the light onto Centreport Parkway. Drive 1.2 miles and take a left at the light onto US route 1 south. Go 1.1 miles and take a left at the light on onto Layhill Rd. Go 1.1 miles and take a right onto Riggs Road. The Pool is 0.3 miles on the right. Going north on I-95 take exit 133. Keep right at the fork on the exit ramp and merge onto US-17 BUS S/Warrenton Rd. Drive 1.9 miles and take a left at the light onto US route 1 north. Go 2.0 miles and take a right at the light on onto Layhill Rd. Go 1.1 miles and take a right onto Riggs Road. The Pool is 0.3 miles on the right. Park in pool parking lot or on pool side of the street starting at the first pool parking lot entrance continuing down past the tennis courts. 16

17 MASSAD YMCA 6 LANE, 25 METER POOL 212 Butler Road, Falmouth, VA DIRECTIONS: From North Stafford 1-95 south to Route 17 south (Falmouth Exit). Proceed east to Route 1 and cross over it. You will now be on Butler Road. Continue straight for about a mile. The Massad YMCA will be on the right. The meets will be at the outdoor Waterpark pool behind the YMCA. From all Points West Take Route 3 East to where it dead ends into Kings Hwy/Route 3. Turn left onto Route 3 Business West. Go straight to the third traffic light and turn right on Chatham Heights Road/Route 212. When that dead ends, turn left onto Butler Road. Turn left at the first traffic light onto YMCA parking lot. The meets are at the outdoor Waterpark pool behind the YMCA. SPOTSYLVANIA YMCA - 25yds Spotsylvania Family YMCA Dragons, 5700 Smith Station Road, Fredericksburg, VA Directions: From North - I-95 to exit 126 Massaponax/Spotsylvania; South on Rt. 1(bear to the right); at the 5th light take a right onto Spotsylvania Parkway (there is a stone waterfall up a short distance on right); go 2 miles; take a left at light onto Smith Station Rd; go 1 mile the Y is on the right. From the South I-95 to exit 118 Thornburg; take a left onto Morris Rd; take a right at traffic light onto Rt. 1 North; go several miles through light at Massaponax High School; take a left at the next light onto Massaponax Church Rd; go 1 mile; take a right onto Smith Station Rd; go ¼ mile; the Y is on the left next to Parkside Elementary School. From the West Rt 3 East to a right on Gordon Rd; follow Gordon past Salem Fields Food Lion; take a left onto Smith Station Rd; follow Smith Station across Courthouse Rd; go 2 miles; take a right at light to continue on Smith Station; go 1 mile the Y is on the right. From the East Rt 3 West to the bypass (at Ferry Farm area); take the bypass to Rt 1 South; follow to Courthouse Rd (Hardee s is on right); take a right onto Courthouse Rd; at the 5th light take a left onto Leavells Rd; follow this through the light (road changes to Smith Station); continue 1 mile; the Y is on the right WOODLANDS 6 LANE, 25 YARD POOL 2 Northampton, Stafford, VA DIRECTIONS: From I-95 take exit 143B (Garrisonville) onto westbound Garrisonville Road (VA- 610 W). Overflow parking is available on the shoulders of Eustace Road, Northampton Blvd, and adjacent neighborhood streets. 20 Fundraising Snack Concession Stand As part of our fund raising efforts each year, we provide a snack concession stand during the home dual meets which is staffed by parent volunteers. RSL Fundraiser RSL requests that each team sell at a minimum $250 worth of advertisement for the RSL Finals program. To accommodate their request, each family is requested to sell at least one advertisement. The ad order form containing an explanation and the purpose of this fundraiser is included in the back of this handbook. We encouraged team members to seek local businesses for participation in this fundraiser. 31 Fundraiser We will have an exciting chance to purchase 31 items from a Sharks family host to help raise funds for the team keep a lookout for upcoming dates and more information to follow.
