Fund Raising as organised by Greg Frey: Date: Wednesday 21 Sept. Session time 6.45 pm. We meet as a group at 6.30 Venue; Armadale Grand Cinema Movie; Bridget Jones s Baby. A light - hearted chick-flick comedy. Cost $17.00 adult. (Support Grand Cinemas purchase a Choc Bomb) Nearly 40 of us will be there. Join us. It is not too late. Meet at the foyer and pay Greg- the- Champion- Fund- Raiser. After Bridget has had her baby most of us are heading to the Cantina and Grill Spanish restaurant opposite the cinema. Greg suggests you look on - line at the menu so as to reduce ordering time for such a big group. Mine is probably a paella. (Editor)

2 We return to Armadale Pool on Tuesday 11 th October pm start on Tuesdays and Thursdays start on Saturdays. The person in the above photo could well be a dedicated Armadale Masters trainee - Gillian or Rowena? Monday & Wednesday Early Morning Training at Armadale Pool WHEN AND WHERE? 6.00am 7.15am at the Armadale Aquatic Centre commencing the 12th October and runs through to March WHAT SORT OF TRAINING WILL WE BE DOING? The focus will be on improving aerobic fitness for Endurance 1000 swims and Open Water Swimming. I believe with a bit of guidance, and some hard work, everyone can improve on their aerobic fitness and achieve their swimming goals. You will be pushed, but not broken, if you stick with the programs. NOTE: Stroke correction will not be provided in the early morning sessions as your coach will be in the pool swimming with you.

3 WHO ARE THE SESSIONS FOR? The sessions will be tailored to suit all club members of all abilities. We will be using lanes 6, 7 and 8 as usual. WHAT DO I NEED TO BE PART OF THE EARLY MORNING TRAINING SESSIONS? All swimmers will need to have completed a 400m and 800m timed aerobic swim prior to joining the early morning squad. How long it takes you to swim the 400 or 800m is not important but the time itself is as each person will have some sessions individually tailored to suit their swim speed. Also bring along your fins, pull buoy and Beeper if you have one. Jeff Jenny Findlay, our Saturday morning tea roster co-ordinator, announces: An with the tea roster will be ed to you. Please check when you are on tea duty and write the dates in your diary. If change is required please refer to Jenny. 4 REPORTS Captain s Report Completed Events since the last newsletter: Club Championships Round 7 Saturday 3rd September Another great turnout of 14 swimmers for round 7 of the Club Championship series on Saturday 3rd September which was run in the 3 event format with a 50m, 100m and 25m choice of strokes. Once again there was a good mix of strokes swum with special mention of the return to the pool of le chief fundraiser himself le Greg le Frey back from his le France sojourn (which is French for eatin and drinkin le French stuff!) Rowie finished on top of the points table for the day with a maximum 15 points from her three swims, which included pb s and club records for each of her 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly and 25m butterfly, go Row! Lexie finished second on points and set a new club record in the Age Group for her 100m freestyle. Also recording a pb and setting a club record was Colin for his 50m fly and Derek recording a pb for his 25m fly and setting a club record for his 50m breaststroke. Pamela also recorded a pb for her 25m fly. Other club records set were Gill for her 100m free and Tim who set a 25m fly club record in the previously vacated Age group. Rowena's red cheeks after a fast 100m Fly, her Personal best. Well done Rowie! Great swimming everyone and good to see the continual improvement in times with 4 swimmers recording pb s and 8 new age group club records, reward for effort! 5 Once again, a gentle reminder: Please take the time to check that the correct stroke, distance and three times (if possible) are recorded for each swim. Thank you! Look forward to seeing you all back for round 8 on Saturday 1st October. This is our last short course round at Cannington Leisureplex. Rowena and Jeff participated in the Masters m Short Course held on 27 th August at Darling Range College in Forrestfield. Well done to both for representing Armadale Masters. 6 Back and Forth Linda Cragg returned from house - sitting in Vancouver. Graham Cragg returned with a very sore rib cage after a skiing tumble in the Australian Alps. Must have been Falls Creek! Yvonne L is back from her trip to England. A wonderful family reunion. Welcome back Yvonne. Liz and Hans are still on their adventures: Here are excerpts from one Liz s Facebook reports: Yesterday we had to revert to plan B as strong winds and heavy rain made the track over the Grand Col Ferret extremely slippery forcing us back down to Courmayeur, especially when Hans slid about 2m down the track. By the time we made it down off the track we were soaking wet and muddy. We are now drying off in our hotel and about to go out for a much needed drink. After 11 exhausting days we are now in Chamonix; dirty, tired, but so pleased we did it. I won't miss the 4 hour climbs with punishing switch backs only to descend down the other side then repeat the climb over the next alp. Staying in the refuge's has been awesome and a lot of fun. The track was never smooth - always very rocky. Our next trek may well be somewhere a little flatter! Photos follow.

A chemistry lesson given to Year 12s: I was perusing the Olympic news on my lap top whilst conducting a Relief Year 12 Chemistry lesson. The students were working quietly. I stopped the students and asked them what they thought Michael Phelps had just admitted to. I received a number of hilarious replies, and one did get it right: Michel Phelps and other high profile swimmers admit to peeing in the pool during training. I am not going to break my 2 hour training routine to go to the bathroom. Of course I pee in the pool! 9 produced by the American Chemical Society explains that when urine and other organic matter mix with the disinfectants we use in pools, they set off chemical reactions that produce compounds such as cyanogen chloride, chloroform, dichloramine, trichloramine and bromoform AKA the unwanted DBPs. Such brazen pee-haviour is unwelcome to Ernest R Blatchley III, a professor of engineering at Purdue University who studies DBPs. High-profile swimmers have a real opportunity to take a position of leadership and responsibility, he told Chemical & Engineering News. The scientist urged swimmers to practice common-sense hygiene. Talking about Pool Etiquette. We sometimes have congestion in the 25m Leisureplex pool. Coaches are now kindly asking all swimmers to follow lane etiquette. Very important make space! Start off the wall at least 5 seconds after the swimmer ahead. Some coaches prefer 10 seconds.
