MASTERS SWIMMING RULE CHANGES for 2010 There are a number of changes in the Masters Swimming Rules that become effective on 1 January Most significant for regular competitors is the new Swimwear Rules. Many of my competitors might feel that I had a role in instigating the FINA swimwear rules as my $40 Speedo Endurance polyester swim trunks are exempt from testing and listing. There is currently a list of 60 approved swimsuits on the FINA website. The complexities of the Swimwear Rules are explained further in the attached article titled 2010 MASTERS SWIMWEAR RULES. Most of the other Rule changes flow on from changes made at the 2009 FINA Congress. They are: BACKSTROKE - When turning the touch on the wall must be in the swimmer s respective lane. BREASTSTROKE -The single butterfly kick permitted underwater at the start and each turn must be performed during the underwater arm stroke. It is no longer allowed after completing that stroke. BUTTERFLY - If you use a breaststroke kick in Butterfly events you are now restricted to one breaststroke kick per arm stroke in events up to and including 200m of butterfly. This includes the 800m Individual Medley. Two breaststroke kicks per stroke are still allowed for the longer events e.g. 400m and 800m Butterfly. Note also if you use a breaststroke kick: A single breaststroke kick is permitted prior to the turn and finish without an arm pull, and A single breaststroke kick is permitted prior to the first arm pull. This means you cannot do breaststroke kick for 15m underwater and then surface. The term dolphin kick has been replaced by butterfly kick. THE RACE. You are now required to stay in the same lane in which you started for the whole race. This is particularly important when swimming two in the same lane (say in an 800m Freestyle). You will no longer be able to cross the black centre line in these events as this is considered as the substitute lane rope. EVENTS. World records will now be recognised for 4 x 200m Freestyle Relays. MEDICAL DISABILITIES. If you have an MD you will no longer be able to use this for the National Championships (e.g. Launceston 2010). This means if you have an MD for Breaststroke you will need to enter only the Freestyle and Backstroke and possible Butterfly events and not swim Breaststroke in relays at the National Championships. MD certificates will still be recognized for National Top 10 and in Branch events unless you are notified otherwise. AGE GROUPS. Masters Swimming Australia now allows swimmers who have attained the age of 18 to become members and compete in MSA competitions. The age group has been changed to and the Relay age group is now Clubs are cautioned that they cannot break World Records if a team includes a swimmer who is not 25 at the 31 December that year. Gary Stutsel, for National Technical Committee November 2009
2010 MASTERS SWIMWEAR RULES These rules do not apply to Open Water Swimming (OWS) where the only requirement is that the suit is not a wetsuit (except where specifically allowed). For pool events Masters Swimming Australia (MSA) has adopted the FINA Rules for swimwear with one exception. Instead of being limited to strictly one garment, MSA swimmers will be allowed to wear modesty garments under their competition swim wear. It must be remembered that if you are attempting a World record as an individual or a member of a team, the World Record Form now requires the swimsuit that was worn by each swimmer to be nominated on the form and that the one swim suit rule applies. The full wording of the FINA rules are on their website at General Rule GR 5 and By Law BL 8 which has a link to FINA requirements for swimwear approval. FINA has also published a list of approved swim suits. The following points are extracts from this more detailed information. Swimwear includes swimsuit, caps and goggles. Men s swimsuits shall not extend above the navel or below the knee and are to be in one piece. Women s swimsuits shall not cover the neck or extend past the shoulders. Nor shall they extend below the knee. They may be in two pieces. Other items covering the body and not part of the swimsuit are prohibited (note that the Referee has discretion when it comes to taping of the body for medical reasons). The material used for swimsuits can only be Textile Fabric(s). No outside application can be added on the material. No zippers or fastening systems are allowed. Swimwear which is obviously compliant (e.g. briefs or traditional shape women s swimsuits in full textile and full permeable material such as polyester suits, are not subject to any review or challenge and do not need formal approval (for example the Speedo Endurance series of swimsuits). Approved swimsuits must carry either on the product or on a non-removable label the words FINA approved together with the approval time e.g. 12/09. Caps and goggles cannot be attached to one another or to the swimsuit (no hood or mask effect. This means the old goggle cap can no longer be worn in competition). Cap shape must follow the natural shape of the head and not include any artificial shaping. This means that shaped novelty caps are not allowed. Hard helmets are not allowed. Gary Stutsel for National Technical Committee November 2009
Firstly, congratulations to our magnificent seven National Record holders, who at the conclusion of 2009, have a grand total of 64 records between them. Patrick Galvin (26), Jan Jeffrey (17), Patrick Devine (10), Frank Braun (2nd claim member) (7) Gerry Tucker (2), David Halliwell (1) and Tom Currie (1). Also welcome to Rob Wilson and Rachael Nevins who will share the Club Captain position with Daphne Briggs this year. This years Open water season has again seen excellent participation from members with twenty to thirty present at some swims. Podium finishers this summer year include Jane Bradley, Jim MacIlwain, Pam Kempson, Joan Simpson, Bruce Allender, Gerry Tucker, Jan Jeffrey, Janette Dickey, Sharon Newstead, Daphne Briggs, Steve Bottomley, Andy Waters, Nicky Kerr, Frank Braun and Michael Harding. Congratulations to Gerry Tucker, who won the Male Super Veteran age group in the Pier to Pub on 9th January. Several others placed in the top 10. We had about 30 members present on the day and some great swims. Jill Adams and Adriana Friso received 10 year Shark bait awards and Daphne Briggs her 20 year award! Our new Marlins Teardrop Banner was planted in the sand at the Queenscliff Swim. It will be used at future events as a meeting place for Marlins, so look out for the aqua banner standing out above the crowds. Our own annual open water swim the Pole to Pole was held at Chelsea Longbeach Life Saving Club on Sunday January 31st. Conditions were a bit tricky for the 1300m course, with a howling southerly blowing.. The event was followed by a delicious BBQ and presentation at Ros and Patrick s. Frank Braun won the Men s trophy and Jan Jeffrey the Women s. The exceptional effort awards went to Richard Ingleby and Nolene Schofield. After completing the 1.2km swim at Queenscliff earlier in the day, Pat Galvin won his age group at the Glamourhead Sharks Interclub on Saturday 30th January and the coveted Trifle Competition with his Raspberries Forever creation. He even had energy left for a very spectacular victory dance from all accounts. Our other swimmers did well too. Jan Jeffrey broke four State records from four swims and Jim MacIlwain one! Patrick Devine, Gerry Tucker and John Stanton took out the trifecta in the age group. Rebecca Draper, Marla Trautman-Pasquini, Pam Kempson, Janet Green, Rob Wilson, Wayne Woods and Brian Davis were also medal winners on the night. John Marshall and Jeff Green were officials on the night Marlins entered a team of 16 in the 24 hour Megaswim 26th- 27th February, raising over $4000 for MS and earning valuable aerobic points. We are looking forward to our Malvern Marlins 18th Annual Interclub Saturday 20th March Due to the extended closure of the outdoor pool at HHSC the venue this year will be the indoor pool at Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC). This will give everyone the opportunity to get some competition in a 25m pool prior to nationals in Launceston See the flyer in this edition of On the Blocks And last, but by no means least, congratulations to Julie Johnson who was named as a finalist in the volunteer category in this year s COTA Awards presented at Government House on 22nd February. Daphne, Rachael and Rob
Surrey Park Seahorses The New Year started with our Annual General Meeting in January and after official business was concluded members enjoyed a pleasant social evening followed by the presentation of Awards and Achievements. Six members achieved top points in the 2009 Aerobic program, Mark Taylor, Catherine Watmough, Martin Haagen, Darryl Flukes, Ian Bett and Tom Fanning. A total of 4262 points was achieved by 31 swimmers. Three swimmers also achieved over 200 points each. The 2009 Aggregate competition was again hotly contested with Darren Whetton and Mark Taylor sharing top points and Martin Haagen coming in a close third. Seventeen members competed in the Aggregate competition during The Pat and Stan Flukes Award was shared by John Syme and Mary-Catherine Tobin. Mark Taylor gained top points in the clubs Open Water Competition with Cassie Williams second followed by Joan Patterson third. The first three place-getters were awarded medals was a year which saw many team members winning medals and setting records at various meets held during the year. One Surrey Park member in particular created a new club record by setting 143 Club Records. Overall, 2009 was a great year for Surrey Park swimmers which has continued into 2010 with many members competing in Open Water swims and while the year is still young, competition is fierce for both the Aggregate and Aerobic competitions. Several Surrey Park members are looking forward to the Nationals in Tasmania.
Heidelberg Flyers Summer swimming season see Flyers hitting the beaches Heidelberg Flyers once again hit the beaches this summer on their annual pilgrimage to the ocean swims. Tough, windy conditions prevailed for the first swim of the season at Brighton but this was not enough to stop Mick Drewitt from finishing on the podium in the highly competitive age group. The season was underway in earnest post Christmas with eight Flyers winding their way through the packs at Point Lonsdale - some impressive times on a perfect swimming day. Backing this up the next day four flyers contested the rock to ramp at Angelsea in conditions that improved even further. Glen Walton taking club honours. With arms and legs warmed up from the opening season swims next up was the Pier to Pub. Ten flyers jumped in to compete in the premier event. Good conditions made for good times on the day with plenty of PBs. The day ended with a meal at the pub to regale stories. The next day three flyers began the long journey to the Sorrento bay swim. The Sorrento swim was the longest of the summer attempted by club members at 1.8km. Mick Drewitt took out club honours ahead of Alistair Tye and David White. Closing out January on the west coast the Point danger 1000 was tackled by Glen Walton and David White with good results from a large competing field. Four flyers rejoined at Queenscliff to tackle the annual blue water classic on the 30 th of January. On the east coast two flyers contested a new swim at Inverloch on Australia Day in the earliest swim start for the season at 7.30am. While on the east coast Jude Doyle was the only club representative to see through a difficult swim at the Phillip Island swim Classic at Cowes. Well done Jude for battling through. The final swim for the season ended with the Cerberus Classic at Half Moon Bay and again Mick Drewitt, Alistair Tye and David White competed for the club in very windy conditions. In all the Flyers have successfully completed nine ocean swims this season. A dedicated bunch! Back on the pool deck, our two maturest members, John Cocks and Arthur Ince provided some club representation at the Victorian Long Course last October and at the recent Glamourheads Shark interclub meet. With our very successful ocean swims, 2010 has already started with a bang, and we re all looking forward to the rest of the year.
Geelong Catfish About this time last year we had a photo of Lit Belcher attending her first open water swim at Moorpanyal Park in the Geelong suburb of North Shore. Inspired by completing this event Lit set herself to participate in more open water swims this season and set about training with a group of swimmers at Torquay. She has now just swam at Moorpanyal again and placed First in the 60 plus category. There were many spot prizes of goodies from the sponsors Victorian Regional Channels warning us to Steer clear of big boats when undertaking activities in our bay area. John Lidstone has travelled to events at all points of the bay and as far as Warnambool. He still fits in kayaking competitions on his odd day off! Lara outdoor pool has been updated and a major leak found and fixed with a fabulous waterplay area for the children installed. As my local pool it has been great to see Geelong Council keeping a heated outdoor pool (50.29metres!)going. It is used for Junior competitions many Saturday and Sunday mornings and school carnivals during the week. Our new aquatic facility is taking shape in Waurn Ponds and will have an indoor 50/ 2x25m pool. We look forward to its opening in the middle of the year. Club Secretary Lynette Newman is looking forward to the National Swim in Launceston as an opportunity to stay and swim with her sister Diana McHenry (her inspiration to join Masters Swimming many years ago) She admits to having had some practice in the pool when joining the Launceston Lemmings for a few Saturday training sessions on prior visits. She was warmly welcomed and enjoyed breakfasts with the members and watching Shane Gould pass her in the next lane! The pool complex has a lovely café with indoor and outdoor seating if you have time between swims. Sale Sadast Members of SALE SADAST are off to a flying start in 2010 with their Aerobic Program well on the way. There is a lot of enthusiasm of the new younger members spilling over to encourage the older members. We have had good attendance at the pool with the weather being kind to us here in Sale, giving us the opportunity for many swims in the outdoor pool, which we all enjoy for the short season. We were even fortunate enough to have nice weather when we arranged to meet for an ocean swim at Seaspray. Most members braved the chilly waters of the Bass Strait, enjoying a somewhat invigorating swim. On our social calendar we all met for a club dinner to present Val Scott with a SADAST life membership in recognition of the dedication and hard work that Val has done in the club. Val, who joined in 1990, has never been without a position on our club committee including many years of President. She is an passionate member who supports everyone with their participation not only in club activities but in other carnivals around Victoria and National competitions. Unfortunately we are soon to loose Val as she and her husband are re-locating to the Gold Coast. However, Val will still be with us for her swim at SADAST Carnival at Morwell Pool on Saturday 26 th June at the Morwell Pool. For enquiries please contact Jenny Marshall greejn@netspace. net.au or Sue Clifford phillcliff@b150.aone.net.au
PowerPoints Many Powerpointers have just finished a wonderful open water swimming season; club members had a clean sweep of the women s 18 years and up age groups in the St. Vincent s Swim Series with Kelly Higgins (Open), Lisandra Da Carvalho (30-39), Kerry White (40-49), Melinda Kemp (50-59) and Rosa Montague (60-69) taking firsts. Trevor Armstrong (60-69) won his age group. At Lorne Pier to Pub we had 6 swimmers coming in first or second place in a variety of age groups from 30 upwards; even our coach, Brenton Ford, took part, taking a very creditable 10 th place in the Open, 6 seconds after another Powerpointer, Daniel Kowalski. Many others competed all around the Bay and up and down the Great Ocean Road for the sheer pleasure of being in the ocean. Now the open water swimming season is drawing to a close, we have got back into sprinting mode ready for the Nationals in Launceston. 29 swimmers are heading over to Tassie for this event. We are pleased to report that everyone entered online, even Laurie Healy which is a first for him and a great achievement for someone who is not confident with a computer. Maybe we will persuade him to enter the Pier to Pub online next year! New bathers for the club have been ordered and we hope to see the new design on the pool deck at Launceston. Our AGM takes place on Saturday 13 th March and most of the office-holders are prepared to stand again. Sadly, though, we are losing our Secretary, Mary Sontrop, who is off to the US for work. Thank you, Mary, for all the hard work and good advice that you have given us over the years. Luckily, Marijke Alderson has agreed to stand in her place so we expect the transition to be very smooth. Lee Morgan and Helen Whitford are retiring from the committee though Helen has agreed to do the work of Recorder and will give us her invaluable advice on the make-up of relay teams. We are always looking for new ways to encourage participation in swimming and last year, we started new club awards for open water swimmers. The first one was for achievement the male and female Powerpointers with the most wins; the second was for endurance the male and female Powerpointers who swam the furthest in open water swims. This year we are introducing two new awards for the male and the female swimmer who compete in the most events in inter-clubs. Points are awarded solely on the number of events swum, not on the position achieved, so that everyone in the club has a chance of winning.
Casey Seals The Casey Seals as always have had a very busy Open Water Season. We have had a several members compete in almost each Open Water swim throughout the season. Some of the better results were Ebony Ebenwaldner winning the age group at Danger 1000 Torquay, Williamstown Australia Day 1km and overall female in the Pier to Perignon. New member Luis Lopez- Edwards also had a successful season, claiming 3rd place overall in the Sorrento Bay Swim. The Big event for the Casey Seals this year was the Bloody Big Swim with 1 duo and 2 teams competing. Peter Ebenwaldner and Sonia Halsvik made up the Duo, Susan Kempson, Malcolm Winder, Megan Greirson & Shane Quirk were team 1 and Catherine Kapoyanis, Raelene Warren, Steve Thompson & Jana were team 2. The boats and support team were also Casey Seals making it a real team effort. With the Open Water Season now coming to a close, our focus now moves back to the pool as we all get back to racing! The club currently has new bathers on order which we are hoping to show off at the State Championships. We had couple of swimmers attend the Glamourhead Sharks meet, which was as always a lot of fun and a very well run meet. There are several of us also ready to race at Malvern Marlins meet which we are looking forward to racing at a new venue. Due to a variety of reason there will only be 6 Seals attending the National Championships. Our club is currently going through a growth spurt of a different kind, with something in the water in SE Melbourne. 5 of our members are expecting babies in the next few months!!!! Finally the Casey Seals are pleased to be sporting a number of new members. We look forward to seeing them all in action over the coming months. Keep an eye on the website for upcoming swim meet programs May 2 - State Long Course Championships May 29/30 - State Long Distance Short Course June 19 - North Lodge Neptunes June 26 - Sale Sadasts
