LobLetter We had the best December 2017 Annual Thanksgiving Tournament (on Black Fri- day) ever this year. As usual, everyone showed up early and ready to enjoy the day. We had lots of good food, an abundance of laughter and fun, and great competition enjoyed by over 50 entrants; and no one had to stand in those long Black Friday lines! Mike Donahue and I (PJ Greenwald) have organized this tournament for the past five years and have been able to take part in the competition because of all the wonderful members who help out with...well, everything. This year we had the opportunity to meet some people who are on our long list of people waiting to become members of our club as well! I would like to recognize a few members who gave their time to help make the day go smoothly: Harriet Gerza, who is injured, came out to help set up and get the day started. Heather Letzring (mother of Amanda, a great young player), always spends the day helping; and Amanda helped me with the sign-in and registration. Barb Weinberg and Dan Taillac came early and stayed late to help and play. Barb had planned to play but was unable due to an injury, so she spent the day taking care of any unexpected issues as well as helping us clean up after everyone left. Many members stepped up to help! Here are our competition winners: 3.0 Albert & Kiyara Long 3.5 Dan Taillac & Carly Chen 4.0 Vinh Dang & Kim Nguyen GROUP SHOT! Derrick Cho and Ashley Chao
It s Angel Tree time! As most of you know, the Adopt-A-Family Project has become a tradition for RPTC! This worthy endeavor directly supports struggling families in the Poway School District during the holidays. This year, AAF hopes to help approximately 500 families who are hurting financially for many different reasons. Through referral from teachers and staff, volunteer coordinators carefully assess each family's needs and wishes. Our Angel Tree helps supply these families with gift cards for groceries, gasoline and Target or Walmart for other needs. The holiday season can be especially stressful for these families; so the goal of the Adopt-A-Family project is to make the season a little brighter for them and as always, support the children's learning. Please stop by the Angel Tree on the upper patio and choose a gift card from the tree! Once you've purchased the card, PLEASE MARK THE AMOUNT ON THE CARD OR ENVELOPE (helps for distribution) and just drop it at the office. Any amount helps! If you prefer to make a donation instead of buying cards, we can accept cash or checks. Checks can be made out to: Palomar Council PTA & placed in the club office for secure keeping. If you'd like a tax receipt, please make a note on your donation with an address to send the receipt. Don t delay! Please take your donations to the club office by Weds. Dec. 13th. We really appreciate your help! Barb Peressini bjpsmail@gmail.com Follow Sherry, Karen, Pete, Gail and Judy s lead and visit the Angel Tree when you re at the club! But hurry! 3
RPTC Women Place Second In Flight at USTA Nationals Our 7.0 women's team traveled to the beautiful new USTA complex in Orlando to represent SoCal in the 55+ Nationals from Nov We were placed in the largest flight, with five teams from around the country. RPTC defeated the teams from Mid-Atlantic (Virginia), Caribbean (Puerto Rico) and Midwest (Ohio), losing only to the team from Northern California, who eventually lost in the finals to a team from NY. Some highlights: * Teresa Butler and Onay Havens won all four of their matches! * All of our qualifying team members played at least twice, while the NorCal team played their top 6 players in every single match, leaving out the other 4 players who'd traveled to Orlando. Melanie Rundle, Nancy Minerva, Vicky Young, Helen Greis, Vicky Benito (Captain), Carey Ramos, Teresa Butler, Onay Havens, Pete Sievers. Not Pictured: Lynn Tenuto. * Team captain Vicky Benito hadn't played enough matches to qualify due to a broken wrist, but she cheered us on and managed our team. * Co-captain Carey Ramos played four matches with a sprained ankle, wearing a cam boot whenever she wasn't playing. * Team member Lynn Tenuto was unable to travel with us, but we dedicated a match to her (which we won), and kept in constant contact with her. * Our team is grateful for the financial support we received from the SCTA and SDTA. While in Orlando, we made time for fun activities, including a trip to Epcot, a boat ride to see alligators, and many outstanding meals together! Our five-month journey to Nationals created a long-lasting bond and many wonderful memories that we'll cherish. 4
ASK THE UMP! Michael E. Kelley USTA Certified Official National Hard Courts Tournament Referee Hi Ump Here is my question: My team was playing a league match and during a point one of our players hit a ball which struck the awning and then landed in the correct court. After some discussion it was decided that since it struck the awning outside the court before landing in the correct court that it was out and we lost the point. Later in the match during a point the opponents hit a ball which struck the scoring marker and then landed in the correct court, another discussion ensued in which the opponents stated that the score board was part of the net and so their shot was good. Our team accepted this call and the opponents won the point. When we discussed this decision later I felt that the opponents lost this point. Submit your Ask the Ump questions to office@rptctennis.com then look for the reply in upcoming LobLetters! What is your call? Teresa B. Hi Teresa thanks for the question, In the first instance both teams got the call right, however not necessarily because the awning was outside the court, but because the ball hit a permanent fixture. If the ball in play touches a permanent fixture before it hits the ground, the player who hit the ball loses the point. Rules Of Tennis 13 In the second instance you are correct the opponents lost the point because the ball struck a permanent fixture (the scoring device) before landing in the correct court. If the ball hits an object attached to the net or net post (such as a scoring devise) The player who it the ball loses the point because it hit a permanent fixture before landing in the court. USTA Comment 13.1 The net posts are considered part of the net and are not permanent fixtures; it is a good return if the ball hit the net or net post provided that it passes over the net and hits the ground within the correct court. The Ump Note: Mike Kelley, long time member of RPTC, is a highly respected USTA official. He has years of experience and you can find him officiating at the larger USTA tournaments in the So. California area, including college tournaments. 5

A Sump Drain Relocation project at Canyonside began on Monday, November 13th. The entire project should take about 3 months. They will be relocating a drain pipe from the entrance of the park (reclaim water station) to a new manhole located in the north parking lot near the tennis courts (just before the turn). The parking lot and access to the courts will be heavily impacted. They will have heavy machinery on site and anticipate an increase in noise during these times. The hours of operation are scheduled for Monday Friday from 7:30 am 3:30pm. There will be days when the parking lot will completely closed and some days they will be accessible. We don t know when these closures will take place but will update you as we move forward. rancho.p.tennisclub/ Pets are not allowed on the courts. All members are to be walking off the courts by 9:40pm. For safety reasons, members are not to remain on their court or the patios at the very second the timed court lights flick off at 9:45pm. The Monitors are closing the office at 9:30pm and concentrating on getting all members and guests packed up and walking off the courts and patios by 9:40pm. Some burned out parking lot lights make the surrounding facility and stairs dark after court lights go out. Thank you to all members who willingly comply with the monitors at this last hour. 7

LobLetter December 2017 BRAG BOARD Adrian Waisfeld is one of our on-staff pros and is a very successful coach! Check out his students latest wins: Jane Wang and Karen Gao, representing Westview High School, won the doubles division Championship at Individual Palomar League Championship; and they are Champions for CIF Individuals. Britney Pellouchoud won Champion in Singles at Individual Palomar League Championship and and Finalist at at CIF Individuals. Also at Individual Palomar League, Angela Liu won 2nd, Sonya Romanenko won 3rd, and Amanda Letzring won 5th. All of these players, coached by Adrian Waisfeld, qualified to compete at CIF Individuals. 10
POLICY REGARDING LATE AND NO-SHOW SUSPENSIONS The Staff is still recording NO SHOWS weekly. Monitors are required to document every court reservation. They must document who was on the court, that cards were checked and guest fees are paid. Courts that are considered Late Cancellation or No Show are part of the documentation. Monitors cannot excuse a late cancellation or no show or any court violation. There is a process that must be followed that ensures the rules are enforced fairly to all members. If you are late arriving or move to another court, it is your responsibility to find the Monitor on duty and inform him so that you are not marked as a NO SHOW. Note: Members who are suspended from reserving courts may use the courts with no other restriction other than they cannot reserve a court until their reservation suspension has ended. Please no calls to the office as the office staff does not have the authority to reverse a no show penalty. You may questions, requests or comments to: office@rptctennis.com. Infraction NO SHOW: Member books court, fails to cancel and does not show up to play at the scheduled time. ** LATE CANCELLATION: Cancels within 4-hours before scheduled court reservation. TIMELY CANCELLATION: Cancels on-line or by phone to the office prior to 4 hours before court reservation time (may leave a message for monitor). Consequences/Procedure Member will immediately lose all reservation privileges for sixty (60) days. No exceptions. 1 st offense: the telephone call to the office will be your reminder of the procedure (essentially a warning). 2nd offense within a 30-day period: Member will lose all reservation privileges for thirty (30) days. No consequences. Reminder of Additional Reservation Rules The name on the reservation must match the player on the court. If a Player who books a court is not on the court they are a no show. If you are at the club and are not on your reserved court you should communicate with the monitor. Players (PLURAL) may not book for more than 1 1/2 hour for singles and 2 hrs. for doubles. This means if player A books a 1 1/2hr. court to play with player B; then Player B is not allowed to book court time after (or before) in order to extend their playing time. Also, regarding the above rule, keep in mind, player B could risk being a NO SHOW if the players finished their match in time and never took the additional reserved court. RPTC has a no tolerance policy for NO SHOW, it's an automatic, without warning, 60 day scheduling suspension. If you show up late, let the monitor know so you won t be marked as a No Show. 11
