1 Rancho PeñasquitosTennis Center Volume 28, Number 4 April 2016 Mission Statement To become the leading recreational tennis center in San Diego s North County area, by implementing activities, and providing facilities that cater to the casual, social and competitive tennis needs of people in the local community. 2015/16 BOARD MEMBERS Steve Leffler, President Vicky Young, Vice President Julie Simone, Rec. Secretary John Parsons, Treasurer Sabine Schroeder, Membership Norma Garrison Carol Musterer Linda Beach Onay Havens STAFF MANAGEMENT Executive Director, Mike Donahue Club Director, Julie Maiorano Office Manager, Connie Komin LEAGUE COORDINATORS Men s League, Dan Scherer Women s League, Carol Donahue Level Coordinators: A Patti Sherman BB Carey Ramos Mixed Norma Garrison Junior Team Tennis League Ernie Blando Minh Vo Nick Bennett MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The deadline for becoming a candidate for one of the 4 open RPTC board seats is fast approaching. If you are interested, please contact the office at office@rptctennis.com with a summary of why you would like to run, your relevant experience, and how you would hope to contribute to the club by April 13 th. I d like to give a big thanks to all the candidates for offering their experience, ideas, time and energy to the club! Running an organization like RPTC with over 400 family and individual memberships, over 600 individual members, 10 employees, 12 tennis courts, 3 USTA sanctioned tournaments, year-round USTA and other leagues, major and numerous minor maintenance issues and the responsibilities that come with operating on city property is a big undertaking and requires that we have capable and dedicated board members to work with our great staff. Every member s vote is important - please take your responsibility seriously to carefully, fairly, and individually consider each Board candidate based on their statements or your own direct knowledge of that person. We need your individual input to elect a Board that fairly represents all elements of our membership. So please make the time to read the candidate statements, form your own conclusions, and please make sure to vote when the election commences on April 17 th. Our annual RPTC rummage sale will be held on Friday/Saturday April 8-9 th. There is a preview event on Friday from 3-6:30 PM and the main event on Saturday from 8 AM noon. The Rummage Sale volunteers led by Janie Terrones are hard at work and have done a fantastic job raising money for the club the last couple of years with this project. So please donate saleable items to the event and plan to join the rummaging. In conjunction with Rummage Sale event, we are sponsoring a fundraiser for the San Diego District Tennis Association (SDDTA) Wounded Warrior Tennis Program (not affiliated with the Wounded Warrior Project) which provides weekly tennis clinics and an annual tennis camp for wounded veterans at Balboa Tennis Club. The club will match the first $500 donated to the SDDTA program. There will be tennis activities and prizes from 10 AM noon on Saturday April 9 th. Please plan to participate in both of these events and please donate generously to support tennis activities for our wounded veterans. Steve Leffler RPTC Board President LL EDITOR Julie Maiorano 1

4 In conjunction with the fabulous and upcoming annual RPTC Rummage Sale on Saturday, April 9 from 8 AM - noon, RPTC will have a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Tennis Program. Coach Tony and Coach Ernie have agreed to participate and will we have fun tennis games with prizes from 10 AM to noon. RPTC will match the first $500 donated to the program during our fundraiser. Please plan to help out this great cause, have some tennis fun and pick up some bargains at the RPTC Rummage Sale! This program is seeking funds to help offset the cost of lunches provided to wounded, ill, and injured service members, veterans, and volunteers in the San Diego District Tennis Association's (SDDTA s) Wounded Warrior Tennis Clinics held at Balboa Tennis Club every Tuesday throughout the year. (The SDDTA Wounded Warrior Tennis Program has no affiliation with the Wounded Warrior Project) More information can be found at These free clinics are a part of the SDDTA s nationally recognized Wounded Warrior Tennis Program founded in 2009 in which over 700 have participated. The lunches are a key element of the program - they facilitate socialization and community reintegration which, according to military and VA health care specialists, are as important as the tennis. The lunches are served following 90 minutes of tennis instruction and competitions. There are typically 15 participants and 5 volunteers at each clinic and lunch. The SDDTA has raised nearly 100% of the funds needed to run its weekly clinics and annual national camps from non-sddta sources (over $200,000 since 2012), but is not being funded in 2016 by its major past contributor, the Veteran s Administration, due to federal budget constraints. As a result, the program is attempting to raise $4,000 which should provide at least 50% of each lunch served during the year, as donated food and beverages from community volunteers provide the other 50%. RPTC members are also invited to visit the clinics, volunteer, or donate food if so inclined. The SDDTA Wounded Warrior Tennis Program also runs an annual national tennis camp every May for 50 veterans from all over the country. The chosen applicants are provided transportation and related expenses for the camp during the one week program. Local attractions such as the San Diego Zoo help out with free admission to their venues during the week. Donation checks may be made out to Tennis Lovers for Charity or to RPTC (both tax deductable 501 (c) (3) charitable organizations) please note in the memo that the check is for WWTP. Please consider helping out this great program on April 9th! Any amount will help! Steve Leffler RPTC President 4

10 LobLetter March 2016 BRAG BOARD Veni, Vidi, Vici. We came, we saw, we conquered. Yes, the dynamic duo of our own PJ and Jeff Greenwald took to the skies in early March, this time to Charleston, SC, to join their teammates in the 2016 National Qualifier Tournament for World Team Tennis. This was the first qualifier tournament of the year. Playing with their team that was slightly different from their team that played in the National Finals in 2015, they came away with the W, and they are now again qualified for the National Finals, to be held at Indian Wells Tennis Garden this November. The Greenwald s two week tour began with a Weekend doubles clinic at the Van Der Meer Tennis Academy in Hilton Head, SC. This was a real treat for us, said Jeff, as we were able to train and condition on the clay surfaces that we would be competing on in Charleston. The training was intense, and the instruction was amazing. The next four days were spent as tourists in Savannah and Charleston. The Qualifier Tournament was next in line, where the team competed in the Super Senior Division. There were no other teams in our Division, so the coordinator played us up into the 4.0 Division, said Patsy ( PJ ). The first day was very challenging, but we held our own and on the second day, we did extremely well. On Sunday, the Coordinator played us against the Winner of the younger 3.5 Senior Division, and we came away with a big Win, which was an amazing accomplishment, and a whole lot of fun. So, what is up next? The team will travel to Las Vegas in early May and to Irvine in September to play practice matches and to pursue dual Qualification in the (younger) Senior level division. Jeff said Playing at the National level is a whole new ballgame. We need to continue to practice as a team and to play in the other Qualifier tournaments to be exposed to more National talent. We are in it to win it and we will continue to pursue the challenge until we do, said Jeff. 10
11 LobLetter March 2016 BRAG BOARD Congratulations to Alison Hout s Winter A team for winning their division! Well done, ladies! Congratulations also to Teri Yuki s Winter A team for winning their division as well! WooHoo!! 11
