Rancho Peñasquitos Tennis Center Volume 30, Number 1 January 2018 Mission Statement To become the leading recreational tennis center in San Diego s North County area, by implementing activities, and providing facilities that cater to the casual, social and competitive tennis needs of people in the local community. 2017/18 BOARD MEMBERS PJ Greenwald, President Dan Scherer, VP Linda Beach, Rec Sec Marty Fellenstein, Treasurer Sharon Gehrke, Membership Julie Islitzer Barbara Brokaw Norma Garrison Steve Leffler MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT I was thinking about RPTC and our wonderful members while we were enjoying playing tennis in sunny, 81 degree temps in Palm Springs. As we draw near the end of 2017, I wanted to send special wishes to everyone for a wonderful and safe I believe these thoughts create a powerful gift to all of our RPTC family: The world exists as you perceive it. It is not what you see, but how you see it. It is not what you hear, but how you hear it. It is not what you feel, but how you feel it. So listen carefully, speak kindly and always try to perceive the world positively. 3 THANK YOU DWOP s LADIES! Check out the new RPTC banner at the entrance to the upper courts, donated by the 3.5 and 4.0 DWOPs (doubles without partners) ladies. Thank you! The DWOPs Sunday morning league was started over 15 years ago and has been a popular league ever since. DWOPs players are grateful to the club for their support of this fun club league and are happy to be able to replace the welcoming RPTC banner. DWOPs runs year around with signups for new leagues about every 3-4 months. Please watch for an blast for future league signup notices. RPTC thanks the San Diego Project Heart Beat / Ron McElliott Memorial Fund at The San Diego Foundation for granting us $ at the request of Maureen O Connor. This grant is for 25% reimbursement for our purchase of an AED (defibrillator) for the tennis center. More information to follow once the system has been installed and available. Great Job on ANGEL TREE 2017 RPTC! I want to thank you, club members and staff, for your generous support of the Poway School District's Adopt A Family Program! This means so much to those of us who coordinate it and especially to the families that were recipients of gifts and support this year. This is our club's 12th year of supporting AAF! A huge THANK YOU goes out to you all!!! This year the club donated $ in gift cards for local grocery stores, Target, Walmart and gasoline. This included two very generous donations (you know who you are)! The program coordinators were thrilled with the donations and said they really help make a difference in these local families' lives. They asked me to make sure you know how very much they appreciate our help with the program. The local families are very thankful for your generosity. It really touches them, at a time that can be very difficult and even lonely. I want you to know how thankful I am for you all. I hope you have a wonderful holiday celebration and a joyous New Year! In deep gratitude, Barb Peressini 3
Dear Ump ASK THE UMP! Michael E. Kelley USTA Certified Official National Hard Courts Tournament Referee We were playing a doubles league match, I served and one of our opponents returned the ball, we won the point then her partner said she had called the serve out. My partner and I did not hear the call after I served, but they claimed that they did. We decided to replay the point. Was this right? If they had stopped play immediately, would they have won the point or would we still replay it? Steffi Dear Steffi Your team won the point. If an opponent calls a ball out but continues to play the point as if the ball was good then the point stands. Prompt calls---as the code item 17 notes eliminate to possibility of having two chances to win a point. If the serve was out, your opponents should have called it, stopped play and declined to hit the next shot. In this case they would either have won the point or you would hit a second serve. Once they continued play as if the serve was in, though, their out call no longer counted. UMP BONUS ROUND! Dearest Ump, Sharon hit a volley and the racquet came out of her hand and flew onto the other side of the net. The rest of us finished the point. We weren't sure if it was an automatic loss of point by Sharon or if the opponents had to call a hindrance. Or... JM Dear JM, The team that sailed the racquet over the net lost the point because the racquet landed on their opponent s court during the point. This from the rules of tennis 24. The player loses the point if the player or the racquet, whether in the player s hand or not, or anything which the player is wearing or carrying touches the net, the net posts/singles sticks, cord or metal cable strap or band, or the opponent s court at any time while the ball is in play. UMP Submit your Ask the Ump questions to office@rptctennis.com then look for the reply in upcoming LobLetters! Note: Mike Kelley, long time member of RPTC, is a highly respected USTA official. He has years of experience and you can find him officiating at the larger USTA tournaments in the So. California area, including college tournaments. 4

A gift basket, gift cards and lesson certificates donated by Coach Tony and Coach Tammy were given away as well. Several hundred dollars were raised for this worthy cause. The WWTP program is sponsored by the San Diego District Tennis Association and needs to raise $70,000 for the 7th Annual National Wounded Warrior Tennis Camp which will be held May 6-12, 2018 at Balboa Tennis Club. Sixty Wounded Warriors of all ages and from over 20 states are expected to attend. This program was established in 2009 and uses tennis as a means of physical and emotional rehabilitation and community reintegration for wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans from across the country. This program is unique in the country and has received national recognition from the USTA and Department of Defense for its excellence and impact. Over 1000 Wounded Warriors have benefitted from weekly tennis clinics at Balboa Tennis Club and Naval Medical Center San Diego, and annual weeklong tennis camps for Wounded Warriors from across the country, all run by volunteer tennis pros and enthusiasts from across San Diego at no cost to the participants who are provided air and local travel, lodging, meals, tennis equipment and instruction by the program. 7 RPTC RUNS ON VOLUNTEERS! From Board members, to committee chairs, to tournament directors, to Club Care committees, to league coordinators and so many more, RPTC truly runs on volunteers! Today, we thank the upcoming 22 Winter Captains! NCDTL: Lori Hurst, Teri Yukie, Patti Sherman, Onay Havens, Lisa Devos NCI:Jill Roland, Cindy Miers, Pete Sievers, Sabine Schroeder, Yvette Hopping, Miriam Lauff USTA WOMEN: Megan Steadman, Norma Garrison, Kelly Lemker USTA MEN: Martin Yanofsky, Dan Scherer, Steve Leffler, Derchang Chao MIXED: Michael Donahue, Judy Webster, Karen Head, Dan Talliac And a special thank you to Norma Garrison & Pete Sievers for assisting with Winter A-Level registration and team coordination! THANK YOU, BILLY ARENAS, FOR CUTTING BACK THE DEAD FOLIAGE BEHIND THE UPPER COURTS. THIS IS SO IMPORTANT ESPECIALLY DURING FIRE SEASON! THANK YOU!! RANCHO PENASQUITOS REC COUNCIL Steve Leffler, RPTC s representative to the Rancho Penasquitos Recreation Council and incoming 2018 Recreation Council Chairperson was invited to participate in the official opening of the Torrey Meadows Community Park near Westview High School on Dec. 14 th. The Recreation Council also sponsored a very successful Winter Wonderland event in early December with the City Park and Recreation Department that included food, live entertainment, jumpers, a balloon artist, Santa and a snow hill at Hilltop Park. Over 3,000 people attended the event. RPTC like all sport organizations operating under City Park and Recreation permits in Canyonside Park is expected and encouraged to provide volunteers to support the Recreation Council and City Park and Recreation Department in community activities so please, please help the club and our Rancho Penasquitos community out by volunteering to help with Recreation Council events whenever you can. 7
Remember to pay your membership dues! If your membership dues were due in November or December, you re late! ($25 late fee) Please remember to send in your membership dues on time to avoid late fees. A Sump Drain Relocation project at Canyonside began on Monday, November 13th. The entire project should take about 3 months. They will be relocating a drain pipe from the entrance of the park (reclaim water station) to a new manhole located in the north parking lot near the tennis courts (just before the turn). The parking lot and access to the courts will be heavily impacted. They will have heavy machinery on site and anticipate an increase in noise during these times. The hours of operation are scheduled for Monday Friday from 7:30 am 3:30pm. There will be days when the parking lot will completely closed and some days they will be accessible. We don t know when these closures will take place but will update you as we move forward. rancho.p.tennisclub/ Leashed pets are welcome at RPTC, but no pets on the courts! All members are to be walking off the courts by 9:40pm. For safety reasons, members are not to remain on their court or the patios at the very second the timed court lights flick off at 9:45pm. The Monitors are closing the office at 9:30pm and concentrating on getting all members and guests packed up and walking off the courts and patios by 9:40pm. Some burned out parking lot lights make the surrounding facility and stairs dark after court lights go out. Thank you to all members who willingly comply with the monitors at this last hour. 8
GUEST FEES ARE $8.00 It is the member s responsibility (juniors and adults) to come into the office to pay the guest fees BEFORE taking the court. Don t wait for the monitor. Don t ask if you can pay after your play. Pay your guest fees before you begin playing. Membership Cards Membership Cards should be attached to your bag or out in sight for the Monitors. Monitors are required to card check every player at the club. Members may NOT hire outside coaches to teach on RPTC courts. This includes grandparents, uncles, aunts, family friends, etc. Violation can result in loss of membership. If you have lost your card we offer replacements for only $5; and if your card is damaged we can re-laminate or replace it for free. Thanks! RPTC STAFF 9
POLICY REGARDING LATE AND NO-SHOW SUSPENSIONS The Staff is still recording NO SHOWS weekly. Monitors are required to document every court reservation. They must document who was on the court, that cards were checked and guest fees are paid. Courts that are considered Late Cancellation or No Show are part of the documentation. Monitors cannot excuse a late cancellation or no show or any court violation. There is a process that must be followed that ensures the rules are enforced fairly to all members. If you are late arriving or move to another court, it is your responsibility to find the Monitor on duty and inform him so that you are not marked as a NO SHOW. Note: Members who are suspended from reserving courts may use the courts with no other restriction other than they cannot reserve a court until their reservation suspension has ended. Please no calls to the office as the office staff does not have the authority to reverse a no show penalty. You may questions, requests or comments to: office@rptctennis.com. Infraction NO SHOW: Member books court, fails to cancel and does not show up to play at the scheduled time. ** LATE CANCELLATION: Cancels within 4-hours before scheduled court reservation. TIMELY CANCELLATION: Cancels on-line or by phone to the office prior to 4 hours before court reservation time (may leave a message for monitor). Consequences/Procedure Member will immediately lose all reservation privileges for sixty (60) days. No exceptions. 1 st offense: the telephone call to the office will be your reminder of the procedure (essentially a warning). 2nd offense within a 30-day period: Member will lose all reservation privileges for thirty (30) days. No consequences. Reminder of Additional Reservation Rules The name on the reservation must match the player on the court. If a Player who books a court is not on the court they are a no show. If you are at the club and are not on your reserved court you should communicate with the monitor. Players (PLURAL) may not book for more than 1 1/2 hour for singles and 2 hrs. for doubles. This means if player A books a 1 1/2hr. court to play with player B; then Player B is not allowed to book court time after (or before) in order to extend their playing time. Also, regarding the above rule, keep in mind, player B could risk being a NO SHOW if the players finished their match in time and never took the additional reserved court. RPTC has a no tolerance policy for NO SHOW, it's an automatic, without warning, 60 day scheduling suspension. If you show up late, let the monitor know so you won t be marked as a No Show. 10
