3 TAZ Students Out of School and Taking Their New Skills To the Courts This Summer The USTA Pacific Northwest Tennis Afterschool Zone (TAZ) has wrapped up for the summer with successful programs in Southwest and Northwest Washington. Many students learned to play tennis this spring and are now enjoying playing the sport outdoors this summer. One of those students is Aiden B., a fifth grader at Columbia Elementary School in Bellingham, Wash. He has played in the TAZ program two years in a row and likes the after school time with his friends. TAZ teaches really great teamwork, said Aiden. When we played doubles we really had to learn when to hit the ball and when to have our teammate hit the ball. Helping students like Aiden learn tennis and teamwork were a group of ten enthusiastic adult instructors who made TAZ possible in Southwest Washington this spring: Blair McFarland, Ann Goodenberger, Joy Snodgrass, Reilly Gahm, Charlet Herrick, Karen Abbott, Dennis Heinz, Judy Ronning, Linda Hodge and Steve Storms. Storms, an instructor at Point Defiance Elementary School, said his favorite quote from a student was this is the funnest time I have ever had! Storms also said he enjoyed every minute of the time spent with the kids. I truly hope we made a difference. They did make a positive impact as they introduced 37 kids to tennis at four sites three elementary schools and the Olympia Boys & Girls Club. And more instructors are needed in Southwest Washington as three new schools have already committed to run fall TAZ programs. The USTA/PNW is also looking for more schools to start the school year off right with TAZ! You can help us in many different ways including: Identifying a school that is interested and has gym availability for the first hour afterschool. Spreading the word about TAZ to fellow tennis players and parents, especially if a quality program is already taking place in your community. Identifying potential partnerships with Parent Teacher Associations (PTA/PTG or PTO) as many of our most successful TAZ programs have been sponsored by those organizations. Applying for a Site Director or Instructor position or finding people you know that enjoy sharing the game of tennis with youth. Most instructors and site directors had little or no experience delivering tennis before getting involved in the TAZ program. The USTA/PNW provides the necessary curriculum and training and it s easy to apply. Go to to become part of our TAZ team and contact the USTA/PNW s Hank Bauer at taz@pnw.usta.com with any questions about the program.
