Smith FSU Shaw Live Audio: FSUBroncos.com/AllAccess GAME PREVIEW After a brief break from CIAA conference play -- and a nice win against Barber-Scotia -- the Fayetteville State men s basketball team returns to league play Wednesday evening against Shaw. FSU enters the contest 3-1 in Southern Division play, just a half-game off the pace set by Livingstone College. STORYLINES By virtue of the win against Barber-Scotia on Monday, FSU now has 15 victories on the season. That total matches head coach Alphonza Kee s high as a head coach. Kee still has plenty of opportunities to eclipse that total and could be looking at a 20-plus win season when things are all said and done. No starter played more than eight minutes against Barber-Scotia, but FSU still has a few players near the top of various CIAA statistical categories. Tyrrel Tate (Raleigh, NC) is averaging 17.9 points per game, the fifthhighest total in the conference. Before the Barber-Scotia game, he had scored in double-figures in 10 straight games. In fact, Tate has failed to scored 10 points in just three games all season. Joshua Dawson (Kinston, NC) continues to lead the league in assists at 5.0 per game. He has 104 dimes this season. Torian Showers (Dublin, GA) is averaging double-figure scoring at 10.1 points per contest. He has scored in double-figures on seven occasions this season. BARBER-SCOTIA RECAP Fayetteville State had a clear mismatch at its hands against Barber- Scotia, and the Broncos exploited that from the opening tip in a win. FSU scored the game s first 10 points and took lead into halftime. After the half, the Broncos put their feet on the gas and severely widened the margin, thanks in part to scoring the first 13 points of the half. Several Broncos recorded statistical season- or career-highs. Among them was Devin Thompson (Fayetteville, NC), who recorded a career-high 17 points and Quentin Underwood (Apex, NC), who had a career-best 11 rebounds. Joe Reed is the third-best shooter in the CIAA this season, connecting on 57 percent of his shot attempts. He averages 8.0 points per game for the Bears. Andre Paulk is one of three Shaw players averaging double-figures. He scores 12.3 points per game. ALL-TIME SERIES WITH SHAW This will be the 88th meeting between these teams, with FSU holding a advantage in the all-time series. FSU will be hoping to snap Shaw s eight-game win streak in the series, with the last Broncos win coming on Feb. 11, The Bears won at Capel Arena the last time these teams squared off. PLAYERS TO WATCH Fayetteville State: #42 Tyrrel Tate, Senior, 6-5, 215 lbs Tate averages 17.9 points per game, the fifth-highest total in the CIAA. He scored 18 in his last conference game, against St. Augustine s. #2 Joshua Dawson, Freshman, 6-2, 175 lbs Continues to lead the conference in assists, averaging 5.0 dimes per contest. Against St. Augustine s in his conference game, Dawson scored 10 points and recorded six assists. #1 Louis Craft, Senior, 6-10, 230 lbs A 3-for-6 game against St. Augustine s lowered his field-goal percentage this year to 69.6 percent. This would be the highest total in the CIAA if he had enough shots to qualify for statistical consideration. Shaw: #2 Andre Paulk, Senior, 6-4 Leads Shaw in scoring at 12.3 points per game. #13 Koron Reed, Junior, 6-7 Shooting 57 percent and averaging 8.0 points per game. #3 Derrick Hunter, Senior, 6-4 Second on Shaw in scoring at 11.4 points per game. Overall Pct Alphonza Kee is in his fifth season as the Head Men s Basketball Coach at Fayetteville State University. Having made his initial mark on Fayetteville State over a decade ago, Kee was named head coach of the Broncos basketball program in He returned to his alma mater after serving as an assistant men s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator with Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana. During his tenure in Fayetteville, Kee has quickly gone about the work of rebuilding Fayetteville State, taking a team that finished 8-19 in his first season to a record in In that second season, not only did Kee instill marked optimism in the program, he guided the Broncos to the semi-finals of the CIAA Tornament. Kee would then lead Fayetteville State to a record and an appearance in the CIAA quarter-finals in In , he guided the team to a 9-17 mark. Kee has compiled a four-year overall record of (.385) and (.329) CIAA mark. He has coached four All-Conference and Preseason All-Conference performers during his tenure with the program. Jamel Carpenter was named All-Conference in , Sidney Evans in and Tyrrel Tate in Tate ( ) and Anthony Shelton ( ) were recognized on the All-Rookie Team, while Ariel Robinson ( ), along with Carpenter, ( ), Evans ( ), and Tate ( ) have earned Preseason All-Conference honors. Kee began his playing career at Lamar Community College in Lamar, Colorado. While at Lamar, he excelled as a three-point shooter and once hit a school record ten threepointers in one game. Following his JUCO career, Kee signed with Fayetteville State where he lettered two seasons under former head coach Rick Duckett. He made the first field goal and three-point basket in Felton J. Capel Arena during the 1995 season against Francis Marion University. Prior to his time with the Grambling State Tigers, Kee was the top assistant and recruiting coordinator of North Carolina A&T State University from A mentor to numerous school-age children across the area, Kee believes his community service is his most important goal and ambition. Young people are impressionable and I have to - I have to - be able to coach them as well, he said. community as well. He contacted area schools, including McLauchlin Elementary School, where he teams with school officials to build a Young Men of Distinction program. The program is a results-based system that emphasizes character development while increasing class performance. Students - and their parents - are required to consent to the program with achieving these lofty goals in mind. Sign on, and Coach Kee will keep an eye on you. But he ll also encourage you, speak with you, take time out with you and discuss anything you want to discuss. We talk about real issues, Kee said. It s not too young to have a goal. We really have to balance character and integrity because a society and the media do not stress that. We really have a big fight on our hands and I m ready. These young males have to be great and learn to be disciplined, to do the right thing and value education. Then they can lead in our society. It s a life lesson that Kee feels is necessary to ingrain as early as possible - like his mother did for him. But it also works with the Broncos. It s like our players currently, he says. We want our guys to be productive citizens, leaders, fathers and good citizens. That fight and that battle, for me, is a daily battle. But I m very excited to represent Fayetteville State in that way. Throughout the year, Kee speaks at schools, community organizations and basketball camps. The connection of basketball and teaching lifelong goals and character traits is clearly obvious to him, even if it s not so at first to the young men he is trying to reach. But basketball gets Kee into the door - and allows him the opportunity to stay - and team - a while. Basketball gets the attention, Kee says. (Young people) equate that with the fun and the extracurricular, but I can grab their attention and talk about the fundamentals to success. It s a tremendous platform that I use daily. To see their eyebrows raise and get their attention because we come from basketball is one thing, but to come back and hear tangible improvement from the principal in academic areas, and they say it s a testament to the influence of the program, that s incredible. Upon returning to his alma mater to coach, Kee quickly went about making connections not just in recruiting circles, but in the Fayetteville
