5 » Bulldogs at the NCAA Championship «Georgia will enter play in Tulsa, Oklahoma as the only team in the country to have reached the final four of last year s ITA National Team Indoor Championship and NCAA Tournament and this year s ITA Indoor tournament. The Bulldogs have had a strong season, finishing conference runner-up in both the regular season and at the SEC Tournament. Georgia is very strong on both the first and second singles courts, with Ellen Perez (16-2) and Kennedy Shaffer (20-3) occupying the top two spots in the singles lineup. Georgia has not yet lost a match this season when winning the doubles point, a perfect On neutral courts this season, Georgia enters play in Tulsa with a 4-2 record after going 2-1 at both ITA Indoors and at the SEC Tournament in Baton Rouge, La. The Bulldogs are undefeated against teams outside of the top five in the rankings at the time of the match.» In Wallace s Words «Coach Wallace on heading to Tulsa... Our players, they ve learned a lot this year. They love new challenges. I thought they ve risen to the occasion all year and they ve played some great matches. We re on to the Sweet 16 in Tulsa, and we re really excited.» All-SEC Honors «Georgia had a strong showing with SEC awards, placing three on the All-SEC teams and two on the SEC All-Tournament Team. Kennedy Shaffer and Mariana Gould were each put on the tournament team for their strong play in Baton Rouge, with Shaffer going 2-0 in singles with a match clincher and a win over then-ninth-ranked Belinda Woolcock for her first-ever win over a top-10 opponent. Gould won all-tournament honors with a 2-0 record in singles, with a match clincher, and a 2-1 record on the doubles court. Ellen Perez was named to the SEC s first team following the tournament, honoring the Australia native for an undefeated regular season and a 16-2 overall record on the top singles court. Shaffer and Caroline Brinson were each named to the SEC Second Team as Shaffer had a team-best 19 dual wins in the spring and Brinson provided a steady presence on courts two through four.» Silvia Eyes A Century «Entering this weekend s action, senior Silvia Garcia is only one singles win shy of 100 for her career at UGA. The Madrid, Spain native is 8-7 in dual match action this spring and clinched Georgia s final home match of the season with a 4-0 win over Baylor. In doubles action, Garcia currently stands at 98 wins in her career. She is 3-1 this spring while paired with Kennedy Shaffer, though the pair has picked it up of late by winning two matches during regional play to advance to the NCAA Championships in Tulsa.» Perez Strong in SEC «Sophomore Ellen Perez played a perfect regular season in conference, going 11-0 record against SEC competition. She followed her strong start with a clincher against Auburn a week later, and she leads the team with seven match clinchers.» LP Shines as Sixth-Court Star «Sophomore Laura Patterson had limited action as a freshman in dual play, but that hasn t stopped her from breaking out this spring on the No. 6 court. Patterson has amassed a 10-3 record this spring in dual play and was a strong 7-2 in conference contests. The sophomore has one clincher so far this season, closing out Georgia s match against Missouri. Her only three losses came at the hands of ranked opponents, and she is a perfect 10-0 against unranked competition.» Poll Presence «The Bulldogs checked in at No. 5 nationally heading into the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Four singles players grace the poll with Ellen Perez leading the way at No. 5. Kennedy Shaffer, who has moved up to the two court after starting the season at four, is ranked 28th - her best ever singles ranking. The pair went 3-0 at the ITA National Women s Team Indoor Championship, and it was rewarded with a spot on the All-Tournament team. The upperclassmen had limited time together before this season, entering play with just two matches together despite being on campus for two full seasons.» SEC Honors Shaffer With POTW «Kennedy Shaffer earned SEC Player of the Week honors on Feb. 10 for her performance at the ITA Indoor Championship. At the tournament, Shaffer went 3-0 while scoring two upset wins, one coming on the third and one on the fourth singles court. It was the second consecutive week that a Bulldog took home the honor, as Ellen Perez won the award a week earlier.» Perez Top Dog «Ellen Perez earned SEC Player of the Week honors on Feb. 3 after defeating the No. 1 singles player in the country, Joana Eidukonyte of Clemson, in three sets during Georgia s 7-0 win against the 20th-ranked Tigers. The pair fell in the first round to Australian professionals Jessica Moore and Storm Sanders 6-4, 6-2.» Brinson Beasts in Southeast «Junior Caroline Brinson entered the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional as the No. 72 player in the nation, but she took home the Southeast regional crown thanks to four victories over ranked opponents in the final three days of competition. Over that span, the New Orleans, La. native victimized the No. 5 (Josie Kuhlman, UF), No. 37 (Kennedy Shaffer, UGA), No. 38 (Kourtney Keegan, UF), and No. 6 (Stephanie Wagner, Miami) players in the country. Brinson was rewarded for her strong play with a boost in the rankings, checking in at No. 22 nationally in the ITA s initial spring poll.» Aussie at All-Americans «Ellen Perez punched her ticket to the ITA Indoor Championships in New York early on in the fall courtesy of a terrific display at the ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles. By reaching the semifinals in both singles and doubles (alongside Mariana Gould), Perez became the first Bulldog to reach the final four in each side of the draw since Agata Cioroch in Since the inception of the tournament in 1988, Perez became just the 20th player to reach the semifinal in both singles and doubles.» Wallace Is Winningest «Head coach Jeff Wallace, now in the early part of his 31st season at the helm of Georgia s women s tennis program, has amassed 677 wins, five national championships, eight SEC crowns and six SEC Tournament trophies. As the nation s winningest active women s tennis coach, Jeff Wal lace has built the Georgia Bulldogs into one of the elite college programs that both wins and plays host to NCAA Championships. The season will mark his 31st year with the Bulldogs. In 2015, Wallace led a young Georgia squad to a 24-7 record and the program s 11th trip to the NCAA Semifinal round, played in Waco, Texas. The Bulldogs sported a roster with five freshmen and only three upperclassmen, but UGA ran through a difficult schedule to an impressive record, reached the SEC Tournament Championship and made its deepest run in the NCAA Tournament since In 2014, Wallace garnered ITA Regional Coach of the Year honors after the Bulldogs enjoyed another banner season, going 24-5 with a final ranking of No. 4. Georgia captured the SEC Tournament title, the NCAA Tournament s No. 1 overall seed for the first time in school history, advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals plus saw the top duo of Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase reach the NCAA Final. In 2013, Wallace became one of three coaches in women s tennis history to reach the 600-win plateau. He is one of five active collegiate tennis coaches with at least 600 wins, and is one of five UGA coaches to reach the mark. In 2009 following another memorable campaign when Georgia advanced to its 10th NCAA Final Four, Wallace became the first person to ever be named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Coach of the Year four times. The 2010 season featured Chelsey Gullickson winning the NCAA singles title at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The past four years, Georgia has finished the year ranked in the top eight after reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships. A Proven Winner During his tenure, Wallace s squads have claimed two NCAA championships, three USTA/ITA National Team Indoor titles, eight Southeastern Conference crowns and six SEC Tournament titles. A four-time National Coach of the Year recipient and four-time SEC Coach of the Year, Wallace s career record entering the 2016 season is His.802 winning percentage is the best among active Division I coaches with a minimum of 500 victories. Wallace s teams are the picture of consistency. With the 2015 NCAA bid, Georgia has appeared in 29 straight NCAA Tournaments and has advanced to the Final Four 10 times. Only once during his time as coach of the Bulldogs has the team missed the NCAA Tournament, and that was his first year back in Playing/Coaching Career A 1985 graduate of the University of Georgia, Wallace capped his playing career under legendary Bulldog head coach Dan Magill in 1984 after winning the SEC singles title at the No. 6 spot. The very next season, his first as coach of the Bulldogs, Wallace led a struggling team up the path of respectability by posting a 20-9 mark and landing a spot in the final Volvo Tennis/ITCA Top 25 poll. In 1987, just two years removed from a losing record, Georgia advanced to the national championship match. Although they didn t win it that year, the Bulldogs would have their day. No. 200: April 19, 1994: Beat Auburn 6-0 in Athens, Ga. NCAA Champions No. 300: April 2, 1999: Beat Tennessee 5-1 in Knoxville, Tenn. The 1994 season ranks as one of the most dominant ever in women s tennis history. It found Georgia on the champion s pedestal in every major team tournament possible: NCAA Champions, No. 400: April 19, 2003: Beat #10 Kentucky 4-1 in Knoxville, Tn. No. 500: May 10, 2008 : Beat #33 S. Carolina 4-0 in Athens, Ga. USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Champions, and SEC regular season and tournament champions. Top that all off with a 27-2 over- No. 600: April 7, 2013 : Beat Arkansas 7-0 in Athens, Ga. all record including a perfect 14-0 SEC mark and a season sweep of arch-rival Florida and it s easy to see why Wallace was named coach of the year. The 2000 Bulldogs went 27-2, winning the Southeastern commit to the g Conference title and the NCAA National Championship. In the title match on the campus of Pepperdine, Georgia dethroned the defending champion Stanford Cardinal 5-4, snapping a 48-match winning streak. Wallace was named the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year. USTA/ITA National Team Indoors Under Wallace, the Bulldogs have been among the most successful teams at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The annual event attracts the nation s finest programs. The Bulldogs have won the title three times (1994, 1995, 2002) and have reached at least the semifinals 16 times. Developing Talent His record for developing players and having them maximize their potential has been evident throughout his tenure. Last season he guided the team to a 24-7 record and the program s 11th trip to the Final Four, the team s first trip to the NCAA Semifinal since The Bulldogs finished the season ranked No. 5 in the country. In 2013, the Bulldogs won their ninth regular season SEC championship after going 24-4 and clinching its third consecutive 20-plus win season. The Bulldogs went undefeated at home (14-0) for the first time since 2009 and 12th time in program history. In 2001, Agata Cioroch arrived from Poland and played No. 5 for the Bulldogs as a freshman. Two years later, she became Georgia s top talent and in 2004 was the No. 1-ranked player in college tennis for much of the season. Cioroch concluded her career as a five-time All-American with two grand slam singles titles. Strong doubles teams are a key component for a successful college tennis team. There have been six Bulldog tandems under Wallace to finish the season ranked No. 1. In 2009, two of Georgia s top players were freshmen: Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist, and by the end of the year they had earned All-America honors. Gullickson was named the ITA National Rookie of the Year, advanced to the NCAA semifinals and tied a school record with 69 combined wins. Gullickson and Gilchrist became the first freshmen in school history to play No. 1 doubles in the lineup. In 2010, the pair earned All-America honors again and Gullickson became the second Bulldog to win an NCAA singles title in Athens under Wallace and the third overall in the history of the program. She would finish her career in 2012 as the school s first ever eight-time All-American and own the record for victories. Meanwhile, Lauren Herring became the fourth Bulldog under Wallace to be named SEC Freshman of the Year and the sophomore All-SEC tandem of Maho Kowase and Lilly Kimbell posted a school record of their own by going 22-0 at No. 3. While the depth of talent can vary each season, the results remain consistent. This was no more evident than in Despite having only one player earn All-America honors, Georgia went undefeated during the regular season, won the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor title, the SEC championship and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. The 2002 squad finished with a 26-2 record and final national ranking of No. 3. Georgia went 13-0 at home and extended its home winning streak to 50 straight. Success in the Wallace Era In 26 of the past 30 seasons, Georgia has finished with a top-10 national ranking including No. 1 in 1994 and In the Wallace era, seven Bulldogs have won grand slam titles, two have won the Honda-Broderick Award/tennis, 31 Bulldogs have earned All-America honors 98 times, and 51 different Bulldogs have been listed on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

17 commit to the g By: Jacob Stansell Silvia Garcia wanted to be different. Lone senior takes leadership role on Georgia women s tennis squad As serious and emotional Garcia is for the game of tennis, she definitely exemplifies a more lighthearted personality. She yearned to form a lasting impression and fill the shoes that those seniors left behind for her when she a freshman. There was really never a time to even think of going somewhere else, Garcia said. I think I ve had great teammates my entire time here. However, Garcia s passion for the University of Georgia women s tennis team far exceeded any consideration to find the exit early on. There was never really anything wrong with my experience, Garcia said. I know a couple people transferred and another went pro. I mean for me I just feel like my teammates have always been great. I like the school; I love Athens. Former teammate Maho Kowase is an example of a player that went on to pursue pro tennis amongst Garcia s tennis class. While players were transferring, graduating, or going pro Garcia kept grinding. In her junior season, she amassed a record in doubles and in singles. Her doubles record was the best on her team for the season. To say she s been working hard might be considered an understatement as she went on to be named part of the Second Team All-Southeastern Conference. Head coach Jeff Wallace first establishes credibility to Garcia s parents in her having a great upbringing. But he goes on to say that Garcia came from Spain with a purpose and ready to go to work on the tennis court. She came here and has been around with extraordinary teammates and great mentors, he said. And all of a sudden you blink and you re a senor and it s time for you to be that mentor and that leader. It s just about finishing on a great and strong note. And Garcia is doing just that, as lone junior Caroline Brinson is taking notes. She s an unbelievable leader, Brinson said. In the sense that she will call you out if you re doing something wrong. And that s what you need on a team. When Brinson first arrived to Georgia she said she felt lost. Beyond that, Brinson said didn t really know what she was doing or sometimes where to go. But there was a familiar face amongst the crowd of students in her political science class. It was none other than the friendly persona of Garcia. All of my teammates were off doing their own thing and thank God I had Silvia in my political science class, Brinson said. This is more sentimental to me because Silvia kind of welcomed me in and made me feel a part of the team instantly cause I had her sitting next to me in class everyday. Many players throw their tennis rackets in frustration when something doesn t go their way. And then there s Garcia. She prefers to slap herself as an alternative. I have a temper, Garcia said. And obviously if you use your racket it s really bad and it s a really negative sign. I just try to not hit my racket and I like have to release my energy somehow so I guess that s what I do. Her teammates would just laugh about in the locker room and never really know what she meant. They knew she was an emotional player but they didn t know the extent Garcia was willing to go to control her temper. Now what makes me laugh all the time she says, I don t want to throw my racket so I slap myself instead, Brinson said. We were doing weights and she s got this big red mark on her thigh and I m like, Silv what did you - Oh I know what you did. And she was like, What do you want me to do? I m trying not to throw my rackets. I have to hit myself. Although Brinson and even Garcia have fun joking about it, Brinson acknowledged Garcia s efforts to improve her temper. She s got to do something, she said. But props to her. She has done an unbelievable job. You know when you get emotional it s hard to control it. She s done an excellent job but it makes us laugh and we have fun with that and she laughs it off too. Nevertheless, it s not a goodbye just yet. The Bulldogs still have one last year to cherish Garcia s leadership and her beloved temper. Wallace believes Garcia s right attitude and relationships she has formed with teammates has helped her grow as a person and as an athlete. She s going to do a good job sharing that with these guys, he said. And I m sure they ll be in the same position down the road. Brinson choked up a little as she says she will miss being able to have the opportunity to have Garcia around as she knows everything about her. Garcia was there from the start for Brinson and Brinson will be there for the end of Garcia s career at Georgia. We ll miss her a lot for sure, Brinson said. But we re going to enjoy the year. We have a whole year with her left. And for Garcia, she s ready to give it one last whirl. I m just going to try to really really enjoy this last season, she said. Because I want to look back and see that I ve had great memories and that I enjoyed my time here. And for that reason, Garcia holds a very special spot in Brinson s heart.

18 2016 georgia women's tennis By: Mary Ramsaier When they re not demolishing opponents on the tennis court, frozen yogurt with brownies and Oreos melts the hearts of roommates and teammates Caroline Brinson and Mariana Gould. Whether it s watching Netflix together or making dessert runs, the friendship between these two athletes extends beyond their time at practice. After a hard day on the courts, Brinson and Gould head home to feed their drained tennis bodies. Fellow teammates Laura Patterson and Ellen Perez also live with the duo. But Perez whips up her own meals, and Patterson sticks to the meal plan. This leaves Gould and Brinson to fend for themselves, which started their cooking adventure. Tennis teammates build friendship off the court We miss going home on the weekends, Brinson said. We miss that luxury. Outside of the school year, the team spends time together, whether it is going to Gould s beach house in Hilton Head, South Carolina, or visiting each other for the holidays. Even though Brinson s family lives a considerable distance away from Athens, she s still not as far from home as some of her teammates. Last year Brinson invited Perez, an Australia native, to come to Louisiana with her for Christmas. It is really special because when you have a team full of girls who want to be together off the court, it shows the closeness of this team, Brinson said. We are a family. Ellen, she s the wonderful chef from Australia, Brinson said. Mariana needs a little work. Brinson said their goal this year was to improve in this realm of adulthood. She knows the basics but doesn t have any special skills to stir up a gourmet meal. Numerous family members and friends send them recipes as everyone contributes to support and improve the roommates cooking. Spending almost every day of the year together and striving through daily struggles help build their connection. We share a bond that is pretty unreal, Brinson said. When you are playing beside your best friend and roommate, you ll do anything for them. After attempting to whip up a Pinterest meal, the pair turned on Netflix which led to more predicaments. While Gould thrives on investigative shows, Brinson adores the Nicholas Sparks-type flicks. I m rewatching Gossip Girl, so that tells you something about what I like, Brinson said. Brinson s family resides in Louisiana, while Gould s family lives far away in Idaho. Homesickness persists as a constant battle for the duo. Making jokes together causes their minds to wander from longing for their family. Luckily, both of their parents travel to see their matches often.
