5 Vandy crowned SEC Regular Season Champions The third-ranked Vanderbilt women s tennis team leaves Gainesville, Fla. on Saturday with a 4-3 comeback victory over No. 10 Florida. The Commodores also return to Nashville with something even sweeter: their second straight SEC regular season championship. Saturday s victory was no easy feat, as the Commodores were forced to power back into the top-10 matchup from a 3-1 deficit. Junior Summer Dvorak came through for the Commodore clinch in a performance that Vanderbilt tennis won t soon forget. With the victory, the Commodores finish atop the SEC standings, boasting a 19-3 overall record and 12-1 SEC mark. It was unbelievable, said head coach Geoff Macdonald. We were down 3-1 and kept our poise as well as we ever have. We were just really tough. What Summer [Dvorak] did to come back in that match, the poise and the mental toughness -- I ve been around tennis my whole life, and it was one of the most impressive and brave performances I ve seen from a player. I just take my hat off to these young people, wow! Vanderbilt came out on fire in doubles play, taking courts three then two in dominant 6-1 victories. Fernanda Contreras and Dvorak were first off the court for the black and gold for the second match in a row, powering past UF s Peggy Porter and Katie Kubicz for the first 6-1 win. The duo of Contreras and Dvorak have given up only one game on the weekend and three games over the month of April. Playing at No. 2 doubles, Christina Rosca and Amanda Meyer earned Vanderbilt the clinch, which proved to be vital to the team s overall score. Meyer/Rosca downed Josie Kuhlman and McCartney Kessler 6-1. The victory was the pairing s seventh straight win, a streak dating back to the squad s victory over Tennessee. possession, momentum shifted in singles play as the Gators steadily gained first-set advantages on five of the six courts. The Gators Victoria Emma was first off the court in individual play, leveling the match score to 1-all following a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Emma Kurtz. Meyer suffered a ranked loss against UF s No. 94 Kessler. Playing high in the lineup at the No. 3 singles position, the freshman fought hard throughout the second set, but was defeated, 6-1, 6-4. No. 13 Anna Danilina extended the Florida lead to 3-1, taking the last straight-set match of the day over No. 6 Contreras, 7-5, 6-1. The loss was Contreras third of the dual season and fourth-ever SEC loss in her three seasons. Just as Emily Smith forced a third set on court six, momentum began to shift in the Commodores favor in the remaining matches. At 3-all in the third, Smith held tough at the No. 6 singles position and used that palpable momentum to begin the Commodores process of chipping away at Florida s lead. The Commodore from Birmingham, England earned Vandy its first singles win of the day, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Rosca was the lone Commodore to claim her first set, 6-1, however No. 45 Kuhlman flipped the switch to take a 6-1 set of her own and force a third-set decider. With the Gator up 2-0, Rosca found her footing and built up an offensive strategy that Kuhlman could not control, taking four straight games for the victory 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. At No. 5 singles, Florida s senior Peggy Porter escaped with UF s final first set lead, taking a tiebreaker over Dvorak, 7-6(3). The Commodore junior fought back in the second set to force a third set, 6-3. Porter owned a two break point lead at 4-1 in the third and final set, however it was not enough to silence Dvorak. Gritting her teeth and vying for each and every point, the junior took five straight games to clinch Vanderbilt s second straight SEC regular season title, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. With the point advantage in the Commodores

6 Macdonald Magic: Geoff Macdonald, Vanderbilt s longest- tenured coach, is in his 24th season as the head coach of the women s tennis team. Macdonald is VU s active leader in career wins as a head coach. Macdonald enters the SEC tournament with 482 victories During his previous 23 seasons, the three-time SEC Coach of the Year and 2015 Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year has placed the Commodores among the nation s elite programs on a consistent basis with his Vandy squads making the NCAA field every year since his debut season in Supermon: Former Vanderbilt standout Aleke Tsoubanos enters her 11th season coaching under Macdonald. Tsoubanos has played an essential role in bringing in some of the nation s top recruiting classes since her arrival and has been a key to the team s successes in the SEC and NCAA, including the squad s recent 2017 SEC regular-season and tournament crowns all while being a fantastic mother of two; Andrew (4) and Evie (15 months). The St. Louis, Mo., native enjoyed a very successful college career. She was named an ITA All-American from , a first-team all-ncaa selection, a firstteam All-SEC selection in both singles and doubles and is the only player to win the ITA All-American Riviera doubles championship two consecutive years with two different partners. Tsoubanos also excelled off the court, being named to the All-SEC academic team A family affair, Tsoubanos and husband Jason (a Vanderbilt engineering professor), balance tennis, travel, and family. Son, Andrew, hits the road with the Commodores on occasion, providing comic relief and loud cheers when necessary. Macdonald Method: Macdonald and associate head coach Aleke Tsoubanos are huge proponents of alternative coaching methods; journaling, meditation and visualization are all strategies used throughout the season. Situationals When doubles is one-all and the point is up to you When you re in the situation to clinch a 4-3 match What are you feeling How do you hope to handle that situation Mastering how to play your personal game The 100 club: Redshirt senior Astra Sharma enters the tournament with 105 career victories. Sharma earned her 100th Commodore singles victory in a 7-5, 6-2 win over Auburn s Jaeda Daniel; an outstanding feat as the senior has played on courts one and two most of her Vanderbilt career (105-30). Fernanda Contreras sits six wins short of claiming VU s single season win record (39) as well as her 100th career victory. Clinches: Vanderbilt is 3-2 when attempting to win a 4-3 match. The Dores downed No. 1 UNC, Arkansas and No. 10 Florida, 4-3. Against UF, Summer Dvorak clinched the SEC Regular Season crown on court five 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. VU fell to Pepperdine on Feb. 11 as well as Mississippi State on March 15. Doubles Determination: The Commodores have clinched the doubles point in 17 dual competitions, and went 10-3 when trying to clinch the doubles point in regular season SEC league play Record with doubles point 6-1 Record without doubles point Home Cooking: Vanderbilt capped the season undefeated at home in the regular season, giving VU a 59-1 home mark since the beginning of the season. The Dores lone loss came on Feb. 5, 2017 against No. 7 Ohio State 5-2. Examples to follow:

7 Tennis, a family affair: Fernanda Contreras - Grandfather, Francisco, played for USC, as a 2x NCAA doubles champion ( 55, 56). Contreras father, Javier, played tennis for Florida International. Summer Dvorak - Older sister, Stormy played tennis for Dixie State in Utah. Emma Kurtz - Mother, Patrizia, played for College of Charleston. Sister, Sophie, plays for Tulane. Astra Sharma - Older brother, Ashwin, played tennis for Buffalo and Pacific. Semifinal Family: Father, Ryan, played collegiate soccer his freshman year at the University of South Carolina, earning an NCAA semifinal ring with the Gamecocks... Emma and Mr. Kurtz have matching NCAA Final Four rings. Emma s parents met at the College of Charleston, where Kurtz mother (Patrizia) played tennis and father resumed soccer career as a Cougar. The Kurtz family remained in Charleston for a time, as Mr. Kurtz competed for the Charleston Battery, Charleston s professional soccer club. Emma s little sister Leeza, an eighth-grader, hopes to follow in her sister s footsteps and compete for the Commodores. Emma was a highly scouted soccer player, and chose to graduate from high school early to compete for the Dores. More than just a high tennis IQ: Romanian by birth, Christina Rosca s parents left the then communist country to peruse doctoral degrees in the United States at the University of Rochester and Old Dominion. Mrs. Rosca was an intern at NASA while compleating her doctoral degree and compleating her research at the university... One of NASA s engineers was on her thesis committee. They provided her scholarship while she compleated her PhD thesis. Mr. Rosca was on the Romanian Math Olympic Team. Intellect runs in the family, as Chris is a neuroscience major and hopes to pursue medical school following graduation from Vanderbilt in two years. In the blood: The Commodores have family members who have achieved some of the highest accolades in their respected sport. Fernanda Contreras, was raised in a tennis playing family. Her grandfather, Francisco Contreras, won two NCAA doubles titles for USC in back-to-back years (1955, 1956) with two separate partners. Contreras competed for the Mexican Davis cup team for several years, where he led the team to the 1962 finals as the squad s captain. Fernanda will be continuing in her abuela s footsteps, as she will represent Mexico in the Fed Cup. Summer Dvoark s father, Dusty Dvorak, was a volleyball player for the American Men s National Team. Dvorak helped team USA win gold in the 1984 summer Olympics and was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1998 Majors: Contreras: Mechanical Engineering Dvorak: Human and Organizational Deve. 8 Astra-Nomical Sharma s Return: Taking the fall off to compete on the pro tour, Astra Sharma made the decision to return to Vanderbilt in January for her redshirt-senior season. In 2017, the reigning 2017 SEC Player of the Year helped lead the Commodores to SEC regular-season and tournament titles and an NCAA Final Four appearance. The Perth, Australia native was a freshman on Vanderbilt s 2015 team that captured the NCAA championship, as well. Despite those accolades, Sharma says her Vanderbilt story remains unfinished. The way I look at it is, I ll always have those accomplishments, Sharma said. Nothing s going to take that away from me. But I can always add to them, so why not try to do it all again? It doesn t feel at all like I ve done everything I can. While on the grounds at Melbourne Park at the Australian Open in January Astra Sharma often had to pinch herself. The opportunity to compete in her first-career Grand Slam was one thing; mingling with tennis legends was another experience entirely. Teaming up with, former Florida Gator Belinda Woolcock, the duo fell to the tournament s 12th-seeded pairing of Raquel Atawo/Anna-Lena Groenefeld, 7-6(2), 6-3 at the Australian Open. But the match s result was less important than the experience Sharma gained in her first Grand Slam all while competing in front of friends and family in her home country. Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald also ventured all the way to Melbourne to watch his senior compete.
