NO. 2 SEED LONG BEACH STATE READY TO FACE BYU IN THE NCAA SEMIFINALS Long Beach State, which comes into the NCAA Semifinals as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation and the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, will face No. 3 seed BYU on Thursday, May 4 at 3 p.m. (PT) at St. John s Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The Beach punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament after winning their first-ever MPSF Championship with a four-set victory over No. 4 Hawaii. Long Beach State will make a return trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in back-to-back seasons since doing so in 1990 and again in The Cougars made their way into the NCAA Semifinals after defeating Barton College in straight sets on Tuesday, May 2 in the NCAA Play-In match. ABOUT THE BEACH Long Beach State comes into the NCAA Tournament with a 27-3 overall record, while riding a six-match winning streak and having won 20 of its last 21 matches. The Beach s 27 victories mark the most in a single season since 2004 when LBSU racked up 28 wins. LBSU s three losses are the least ever under head coach Alan Knipe and the fewest since 1973 when the squad had three

For the first time since , Long Beach State has posted a pair of back-to-back 25-plus win seasons. Long Beach State will make its first back-to-back appearance in the NCAA Tournament since doing so in 1990 and The Beach have won in straight sets on 20 occasions this season, marking the most three-set sweeps ever recorded in a single-season has been a record-breaking season for Long Beach State as the Beach saw a program-record six players named AVCA All-Americans. With a total of 31 AVCA All-Americans, LBSU has the most of any school in AVCA history. This season Long Beach State had four First Team All-Americans in TJ DeFalco, Amir Lugo-Rodriguez, Andrew Sato and Josh Tuaniga. Additionally, Kyle Ensing was named a Second Team All-American, while Bryce Yould was an Honorable Mention selection. TJ DeFalco was named MPSF Player of the Year, becoming just the second Long Beach State men s volleyball player to earn the honor after Paul Lotman in DeFalco was also named to the All-MPSF First Team for the second time in as many seasons. Joining DeFalco on the All-MPSF First Team were teammates Josh Tuaniga and Kyle Ensing. The Beach also placed three on the All-MPSF Second Team in Andrew Sato, Amir Lugo-Rodriguez and Bryce Yould. Long Beach State dominated the Off the Block National Awards as Amir Lugo-Rodriguez took home National Blocker of the Year and the Ryan Millar Award for the nation s best middle attacker, while TJ DeFalco won the Karch Kiraly Award for the nation s best outside hitter, Josh Tuaniga was named Setter of the Year, and Andrew Sato earned the Erik Shoji Award for the nation s top libero. In his 14th year at the helm of the Long Beach State men s volleyball program, Alan Knipe was named MPSF Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. Senior libero Andrew Sato continues his prowess in the backrow as he owns a total of 973 digs becoming just the 15th player in MPSF history to reach the 900-dig plateau. He is also Long Beach State s all-time digs leader. Senior middle blocker Bryce Yould has been hot offensively as he owns a.489 ( ) attack percentage all the while upping his career hitting percentage to.444 ( ) to rank third all-time at Long Beach State. Sophomore setter Josh Tuaniga has totaled 1102 assists for an average of to lead both the MPSF and the nation. Tuaniga has now accumulated a total of 2,466 assists in his career and has jumped into eighth place all-time. Amir Lugo-Rodriguez and Bryce Yould are Long Beach State s leading hitters with attack percentages of.494 and.489, respectivey. The pair are currently ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, in the LBSU single-season record book. Josh Tuaniga and Amir Lugo-Rodriguez both lead the nation as Tuaniga averages assists per set, while Lugo- Rodriguez has posted 1.30 blocks per set. The Beach lead the nation with an impressive team hitting percentage of.371, which is the best team attack percentage in the MPSF rally scoring history. IN THE RANKINGS Long Beach State has held the No. 1 spot in the AVCA Division I-II Men s Volleyball Poll in five of the last six weeks. The Beach currently own a record of 27-3 and are on a six-match winning streak and have won 20 of their last 21 contests. BYU enters the NCAA Tournament ranked fourth in the nation as is the No. 3 seed in the tournament. The Cougars have won 19 of their last 21 matches and are 25-4 overall. SCOUTING THE COUGARS No. 4 BYU brings a 25-4 record into the NCAA Semifinal game against Long Beach State. The Cougars had a solid season in which they put together a 15-match winning streak which was snapped only by the Beach. Since their loss to LBSU, BYU has put together a 4-1 record which its only loss coming to Hawaii in the MPSF Tournament. The Cougars are 10-1 when playing on the road this season and 1-1 when playing at a neutral site. BYU owns a record of 17-2 in three-set sweeps, is 6-1 in four-set matches and is 2-1 in five-set contests. As a team, the Cougars are hitting.320 on assists per set. They are averaging 8.55 digs and 2.64 blocks per set, while knocking down 1.69 service aces per set. Ben Patch and Jake Langlois are the team s leading attackers with Patch averaging 4.41 kills per set and Langlois posting The two also average 1.39 digs per set, while Langlois puts up 0.67 blocks per contest to go along with a.356 hitting percentage. Leo Durkin is the Cougars setter as he has dished out 980 assists on the year to average per set. he also posts 1.23 digs per set and 0.66 blocks per set. Defensively, Erik Sikes leads BYU with 2.51 digs per set,while Price Jarman patrols the net averaging 1.00 blocks per set. SERIES VS. BYU Long Beach State and BYU will meet for the 60th time in program history and BYU leads the all-time series Earlier this season, the two teams met in Provo, Utah and split the series with the Cougars edging the Beach, 3-2, in the first match and the 49ers earning the 3-0 sweep over the Cougars in the second match. The conference foes have met eight times prior on a neutral court and BYU holds the edge, 5-3. The last time the two teams met in an NCAA Tournament match was in 2016 when the Cougars defeated the Beach, 3-1, in the NCAA Semifinals to end Long Beach State s season. LAST TIME OUT Top-ranked Long Beach State won its first-ever MPSF Championship in any sport after defeating No. 3 seed Hawaii, 3-1 [17-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-23] on Saturday night inside the Walter Pyramid. With the victory, the Beach have officially punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season.

It is also the first time LBSU will head to the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons since 1990 and After dropping the first set to Hawaii (26-5), Long Beach State (27-3) came back and rattled off three consecutive set victories to improve to 16-0 at home, marking the most home wins in a single-season in program history. The Beach hit.361 in the match and were led offensively by Kyle Ensing and TJ DeFalco who combined for 27 kills. Ensing led the way with 15 on.367 hitting, while DeFalco added 12 on a.429 clip. DeFalco would go on to be named MPSF Tournament MVP after coming up one dig shy of a double-double in the championship match. Ensing, along with setter Josh Tuaniga, were named to the All-MPSF Tournament Team. Ensing finished the contest with six digs, two assists, a pair of service aces and one block, while Tuaniga dished out 37 assists, four kills on five attempts without committing an attack error for a hitting efficiency of.800. He also added five digs, three aces and two blocks. Long Beach State also got solid efforts from Andrew Whitt (eight kills, five digs), Andrew Sato (five digs, three assists), and the blocking duo of Amir Lugo-Rodriguez (four blocks) and Bryce Yould (three blocks). Yould also contributed six kills on.364 hitting, while Lugo-Rodriguez added three kills with an attack percentage of.333. The Beach got off to a slow start as the Rainbow Warriors out-hit them.240 to a mere.038 in the first set. Hawaii broke a 3-3 tie after tallying three straight points to take a 6-3 lead over LBSU that it would not relinquish. The `Bows would go on to win the opening frame LBSU came out in the second game determined to even the set score. The Beach would hit.393 ( ) in the game, while their offense would limit the `Bows to.114 hitting ( ). The 49ers started the set off on an Ensing kill and never trailed and they would win the game by a score of The third set was all Long Beach State as the Beach kicked off the frame on a 5-0 run forcing Hawaii to call a timeout. After the `Bows got on the scoreboard, the 49ers would go on another 5-0 run to extend their lead to LBSU kept the set at arm s length rattling off another five straight points to open the game up Long Beach State hit a sizzling.632 ( ) in the frame, while Hawaii struggled with a.042 attack percentage (8-7-24) as the Beach cruised to a victory. The conference foes battled it out in the fourth set as the two teams fought through 17 ties and three lead changes. Tuaniga severed up his third ace of the match to give Long Beach State a lead that it would hold onto for the remainder of the contest. Following Tuaniga s ace, the Beach took back the set and match on kills by DeFalco, Ensing and Whitt to win the set, match and MPSF Championship with a victory. Hawaii finished the match hitting.184 ( ) as Kupono Fey led the way with 14 kills, while Stijn van Tilburg added 12. Jennings Franciskovic registered 38 assists with four blocks, while Larry Tuileta paced the backrow with 10 digs. RECORD-SETTING ALL-AMERICANS For the first time in program history, Long Beach State has half a dozen 49ers named American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Americans as the Beach garnered four first-team, one second team, and one honorable mention selection. The announcement was made by the AVCA Monday morning. Long Beach State leads all programs in this year s class and the awards will be presented at the NCAA Men s Volleyball Championship Banquet on Wednesday, May 3 on the campus of Ohio State University. Leading the way for the Beach on the AVCA First Team are TJ DeFalco, Amir Lugo-Rodriguez, Andrew Sato and Josh Tuaniga. While Kyle Ensing earned All-Second Team honors and Bryce Yould was an Honorable Mention selection. Long Beach State now totaled 31 AVCA All-Americans in program history which marks the most selections in AVCA Men s Division I-II history. ALL-CONFERENCE ACCOLADES Long Beach State sophomore outside hitter TJ DeFalco was named MPSF Player of the Year following an outstanding sophomore season, it was announced by the conference Thursday afternoon. DeFalco is one of six LBSU men s volleyball players to earn All-MPSF honors this season as the Beach tallied three First Team selections and three Second Team honorees. Joining DeFalco on the All-MPSF First Team are sophomores Josh Tuaniga and Kyle Ensing. The trio are two-time All- MPSF selections after earning all-conference honors a year ago in their rookie campaigns. The All-MPSF Second Team was made up of Amir Lugo-Rodriguez, Andrew Sato and Bryce Yould. Sato is a three-time All-MPSF selection, while Lugo-Rodriguez and Yould earned the honors for the first time in their respective careers. HONORS UPON HONORS If All-Conference and All-American honors weren t enough, four Long Beach State men s volleyball players took home five different Off the Block National awards. Amir Lugo-Rodriguez led the way with the National Blocker of the Year award

COACH OF THE YEAR, TIMES TWO Head Coach Alan Knipe was named both MPSF Coach of the Year and AVCA Coach of the Year. If that weren t impressive enough, Long Beach State associate head coach Tyler Hildebrand was named AVCA Assistant Coach of the Year. Knipe earned the honors for the second time in his career after leading the Beach to a 27-3 overall record, marking the most wins for the program since Under Knipe s tutelage, LBSU won a share of the MPSF Regular Season title and enters the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed overall after having been ranked No. 1 in five of the last six weeks. WIth Knipe and Hildebrand on the bench, the Beach recorded a program-record 20 three-set sweeps and produced a perfect 16-0 record when playing inside the Pyramid. Hildebrand. who assists in all aspects of the game, but primarily with the setters and offense has been an integral part of the team s success. He has guided two-time AVCA All-American setter Josh Tuaniga, who currently leads the nation with assists per set, and has helped the offense register a team hitting percentage of.371, which also leads the nation and is the best attack percentage in MPSF rally scoring history. LET S GO STREAKING Long Beach State s 14-match winning streak which ran from February 2 to March 24 is the second-longest winning streak in program history. During that span, the Beach won 12 of their 14 matches in straight sets and never played more than four sets in a single match. RECORD BREAKER Senior libero Andrew Sato rewrote the Long Beach State record book and became the program s all-time digs leader, breaking the previous record of 886 which was set in With 973 career digs, Sato is also just the 15th player in MPSF history to reach the 900 career dig plateau. He has tallied 44 matches in his career with 10 or more digs, which is the most double-figure digs performances ever in Long Beach State history. HOME SWEET HOME This season, Long Beach State has gone undefeated at home posting a 16-0 record when playing inside the Walter Pyramid. After tallying an 11-3 record when playing at home last year, the Beach have put together a 27-3 record inside the Pyramid over the last two years for a winning percentage of.900. YOULD NEVER BELIEVE IT! Senior middle blocker Bryce Yould conintues to impress offensively as he saw career hitting percentage spike to.444 and is now ranked third all-time at Long Beach State in career attack percentage. On the year, Yould owns an impressive.4989 clip in all matches, while hitting a sizzling.541 in MPSF contests. ACES WILD The Beach opened the MPSF Tournament with a hot-serve as Long Beach State tallied eight service aces to tie the LBSU single-match record during a conference tournament en route to defeating USC. The Beach s eight aces were the most by an LBSU men s volleyball team in a conference tournament since 2009 when the team recorded eight aces at Pepperdine to tie the 2001 squad which amassed eight against the Waves eight years earlier. Sophomore outside hitter TJ DeFalco was a big proponent in the Beach s success on the serve as he knocked down four aces in the match which set a new single-match record when playing in a conference tournament for Long Beach State. HOT HITTING BEACH Long Beach State boasts three players hitting over.400 this season in Amir Lugo-Rodriguez (.494), Bryce Yould (.489/ and Josh Tuaniga (.474). Overall, LBSU is hitting a nation-leading.371 clip which is also the best MPSF attack percentage in the rally scoring era. HELPING HIMSELF TO THE TOP 10 Sophomore setter Josh Tuaniga continues to se the pace for Long Beach State this season as he has now accumulated 1,102 assists on the year to average assists per set, which is tops in the country. Tuaniga has now dished out 2,466 career assists moving him into eighth-place all-time at LBSU. BLOCK PARTY Senior middle blocker Amir Lugo-Rodriguez has been solid at the net this season posting a total of 131 total blocks (12 solo, 119 assists) to average 1.30 blocks per set. His blocks per set average leads the team, the conference, and the nation. Additionally, Bryce Yould has also been a force at the net as he has amassed 89 blocks to average 0.94 blocks per set this season. As a team, LBSU is putting up 2.71 blocks each set. CAN YOU DIG IT? Senior libero Andrew Sato has paced the backrow for the Beach this season just as he s done for each previous year he s been on the team. The Calabasas, Calif., native and team captain is averaging 2.46 digs per set which is tops in the MPSF and is seventh in the nation. Sato has posted a total of 973 career digs to become Long Beach State s all-time digs leader and with 44 double-figure digs performances leads the 49ers in most double-figure digs matches.

During the second month of the season, LBSU swept all but one opponent in straight sets. Their only set loss came in the first set of a four-set win over Cal Baptist on Feb. 22. With an eight-match winning streak in the month of February, the Beach moved into second place in the national rankings and stayed there for the remainder of the month. MARCHING ON After going 8-0 in the month of February, the Beach continued their winning ways into the month of March. Long Beach State finsihed the third month of the season with an 8-1 record and won seven of its last eight contests in straight sets. UNDEFEATED IN APRIL The Beach continued their strong showings from February and March as they went 4-0 in the month of April. Long Beach State closed out the regular season with a 3-0 sweep over No. 14 CSUN, then swept through the MPSF Tournament with victories over No. 10 USC (3-1), No. 5 UC Irvine (3-0) and No. 4 Hawaii (3-1) en route to winning its first-ever MPSF Championship in any sport. NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Sophomores TJ DeFalco and Kyle Ensing have each been named Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men s National Player of the Week this season. Joining Ensing as an MPSF Player of the Week selection, was senior libero Andrew Sato who earned the honors after becoming Long Beach State s all-time digs leader with 893 career digs at the time. THIRTY UNDER 30 Long Beach State assistant coach Nick MacRae was awarded the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 2017 Thirty Under 30 Award. The award was created in 2009 to honor up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport. To qualify for the award, nominees had to be 30 years old or younger in This year broke the record number of nominations with nearly 200. Of the thirty recipients, 12 are NCAA Division I coaches, five are high school/club, four are NCAA Division III, three are NCAA Division II and Two-Year College, and there s one each in the NAIA, NCCAA and USCAA. MacRae came to Long Beach State in 2013 and served as the team s director of operations before moving into an assistant coach role. In his five years on staff, he has seen the team rise to a No. 1 national ranking this season. A year ago, he was an integral part of the team s Final Four run, and this season continues to guide the Beach both on and off the court as they look to make a return trip to the NCAA Championship. In addition, MacRae also assists with recruiting and is always looking to help the team get better. WALL OF HONOR INDUCTEES On Monday, March 27, the Long Beach State men s volleyball program inducted five members to the Wall of Honor in Tyler Hildebrand, David McKienzie, Randy Sandefur, Brett Schroeder, and Richard Valbuena. The two major induction criteria for the Wall of Honor, as outlined by the committe, are as follows: the player must have represented Long Beach State men s volleyball with unparalleled success or achievement and truly embodied the passion, commitment, and loyalty that encompass a 49er men s volleyball player. INCOMING! Last November, Long Beach State men s volleyball head coach Alan Knipe announced the signing of half a dozen new additions for the 2018 season after Gary Adams, Alexander Anastassiades, Simon Andersen, Spencer Oliver, Ryan Poole, and Carlos Rivera each signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Beach as incoming freshmen. Gary Adams is a 6-foot-5 middle out of Murrieta Valley High School where he was a 2016 First-Team All-Sunbelt League selection. Alexander Anastassiades is a 6-foot-8 opposite who played club ball with The HBC. The Republic of Cyprus native has trained with the Cyprus National Team and competed in the U21 World Beach Volleyball Championships. Simon Andersen is a 6-foot-8 middle from Middlefart, Denmark where earned awards for Best Middle Blocker for the U19 NEUZA team in 2015 and was ranked the No. 2 rising star in the Danish League in both 2015 and Ryan Poole is a 6-foot-5 outside hitter who is a two-time Super 8s Player of the Year in both 2015 and Carlos Rivera is a 6-foot-3 setter who was a member of the All-Tournament Team for the 17s Division at the 2016 Junior Nationals. 13 @LBSU_mvb PAGE 13 ALAN KNIPE Head Coach 14th Year Alan Knipe enters his 14th season at the helm of the Long Beach State men s volleyball program after having led the 49ers to three NCAA Final Fours, one Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) regular season title, 12 MPSF Tournament appearances, including four trips to the championship match, and three NCAA Championship appearances. Knipe and the 49ers are coming off a season in which he guided the Beach to their 17th 20-win season as the squad made its eighth NCAA semifinal appearance and first since With a 25-8 overall record, Long Beach State posted its most wins since going 28-7 in 2004 and tallied the fifth-most victories in program history. Knipe guided the Beach to a No. 4 ranking to finish the 2016 season as the team earned four AVCA All-America selections and five All-MPSF honorees. Under Knipe s tutelage, Long Beach State has posted a record as Knipe boasts a.639 winning percentage. In MPSF action, the Beach is (.648) with Knipe on the bench. He has served as head coach of the 49ers since 2001, with a brief hiatus from in which he coached the U.S. Men s National Team. As head coach of the Beach, Knipe has been named AVCA National Coach of the Year in 2004 and MPSF Coach of the Year in He has coached three National Players of the Year in Taylor Crab (AVCA, 2013), Paul Lotman (AVCA, 2008) and Tyler Hildebrand (Volleyball Magazine, 2006). During his tenure as head coach of the U.S. Men s National Team, Knipe guided the Americans to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Olympic Games in London as they advanced to the knockout round after finishing first in Pool B, which also featured Brazil and Russia, who were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the world, respectively. With Knipe at the helm, the United States also qualified for the World League Finals on three occasions (2009, 2011 and 2012). In 2012, they claimed the FIVB World League silver medal, marking their second-best finish since the World League began in Additionally, the U.S. won the gold medal at the 2012 NORCECA Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament, securing their eighth consecutive berth to the Olympics. Knipe played three years ( ) at Long Beach State under Ray Ratelle, where he was a key member of the 49ers 1991 National Championship team. In the1991 title match, Knipe racked up 16 kills, nine digs, eight blocks and hit.636 ( ) as LBSU topped USC, 3-1. As a student-athlete at LBSU, Knipe received numerous honors including all-conference (First Team, 1992), All-American (Frist Team, 1992; Second Team, 1991) and All-NCAA Tournament (1991) accolades. He also helped the Beach advance to the 1990 NCAA Finals. Knipe continued his playing career following his graduation from Long Beach State as he was a member of the United States National Team from He also played on the Bud Light 4-Man Pro Beach Volleyball Tour and won seven USVB National Open Championships with Team Paul Mitchell. In 1993, he was named the United States Volleyball Association Player of the Year. Two years later, Knipe played overseas for Spoleto in the Italian Pro League and played for the Zellik Club in Belgium the following year.
