7 2015 SEASON OUTLOOK Long Beach State may have a new look on the court in 2015, but despite losing five starters to gradua on, the Beach s ll welcomes back a talented group that is just as mo vated to uphold the program s championship tradi on. Even though our guys haven t played a whole lot of MPSF matches, they re doing a lot of really good things in our gym, 12th-year head coach Alan Knipe said. That may or may not translate into great volleyball on the court right away, but I expect us to get significantly be er as the season goes on. At the same me, we re hoping that with the hard work the guys have put in this fall, we can fast track that learning experience as much as possible. The 15 le erwinners who are returning aren t strangers to LBSU s winning ways. They helped last year s team, which went overall, make its fourth-straight postseason appearance. Ten of the players on this year s roster were also members of the 2013 squad that advanced to the MPSF Tournament final and finished the campaign at MIDDLE BLOCKERS Long Beach State s lone returning starter is junior middle blocker Taylor Gregory. Gregory, who stands at 6-foot-7, finished the 2014 season ranked second on the team in blocks (1.08/set) and fi h in kills (1.38/set). As a freshman in 2013, Gregory led the na on with 1.47 blocks per set. The 49ers have five others compe ng for the second spot in the middle. Bryce Yould brings back the most experience as he played in 10 matches and made two starts as a true freshman last year. One of those starts came in the MPSF Tournament quarterfinals at No. 2 Pepperdine. The 6-foot-4 sophomore finished the year hi ng.404 with 0.96 kills per set. Senior Chris van Vuuren and junior John Henry also saw limited ac on in 2014, while senior Tyler Kulakowski and redshirt freshman Jason Willahan did not play. OUTSIDE HITTERS The 49ers have big shoes to fill on the outside with the loss of two- me first-team All-American and 2013 AVCA Na onal Player of the Year Taylor Crabb, and All- MPSF selec on Dalton Ammerman. Juniors Andrew Whi and Dan Glamack will look to lead the way in their absence. Whi stepped up for the Beach when Ammerman was sidelined with an ankle injury early in the 2014 campaign, earning the start in two matches. In his first appearance of the year, Whi finished with a career-high 10 kills at BYU. Glamack, meanwhile, has played in 10 matches in his first two seasons at Long Beach State. He had a career-best nine kills, while hi ng.320 against IPFW as a redshirt freshman. LBSU also welcomes back 6-foot-8 sophomore Eric Ensing. Ensing saw ac on in 73 sets last year, primarily as a serving specialist. He will compete for me on the outside or at opposite in Adding depth to the outside posi on this year are freshmen Andrew TenBrink, Bjarne Huus and Louis Richard. OPPOSITES Junior Cody Mar n enters the season as the front-runner for the star ng opposite posi on as he broke on to the scene late last year. He appeared in 17 matches and started the final three, including the MPSF Tournament quarterfinal at Pepperdine where he had 16 kills. A few weeks earlier, Mar n compiled 18 kills on.630 hi ng against UCLA, which started a stretch of four-straight double-figure kill performances to close out the season. The Beach also welcomes back junior John La Rusch and sophomore Sco Stephanoff. The 6-foot-6 La Rusch redshirted last year, but averaged 1.94 kills per set over his first two seasons and earned AVCA Na onal Player of the Week honors in Stephanoff saw limited ac on in 2014, while freshmen Zach Gates and Chase Palumbo will enter the mix in SETTERS Although the 49ers will not have the familiar face of four-year starter Connor Olbright direc ng the offense in 2015, they do have two sophomore se ers who are more than ready to step in and make it a smooth transi on for the Beach. Cur s Stallings, who did not play in any regular season matches as a true freshman, is the prime candidate for the star ng job this year. Stallings, who stands at 6-foot- 5, was an AVCA High School All-American and a member of the U.S. Boys Youth Na onal Team that competed in the 2013 FIVB U-19 World Championships. Ma Butler also appeared in 12 matches last year, primarily as a serving specialist. He was the 2013 CIF Southern Sec on Division I Player of the Year a er leading Hun ngton Beach High School to its first-ever Southern California Regional tle. LIBEROS Long Beach State will look to senior Ryan Windisch to lead the way at the libero posi on as junior Andrew Sato is planning on a redshirt season. Windisch, who transferred from Irvine Valley College in 2013, has averaged 1.21 digs per set in his two years at the Beach. The 49ers have also added sophomore transfer Ryan Manoogian. Manoogian helped Orange Coast College to the 2014 California Community College Athle c Associa on state tle and led the team with 106 digs (1.61/set). In addi on, junior Edgar Palos could see playing me in the back row. SCHEDULE For the 11th year in a row, Long Beach State will open the campaign at the UCSB Asics Invita onal in Santa Barbara, Jan The 49ers then jump right into their tough MPSF slate with home matches against UC San Diego (Jan. 14) and UC Irvine (Jan. 17). The following week, LBSU embarks on a four-match road swing, star ng at Stanford and Pepperdine. The Beach then returns to the Walter Pyramid to take on UCLA (Feb. 4) and UC Santa Barbara (Feb. 6). A er making a short trip to CSUN, the 49ers will travel to Provo, Utah, for a pair of matches at two- me defending MPSF champion BYU. Long Beach State will also play host to Hawai i on Feb. 27 and 28, prior to making its way to UC Santa Barbara and UCLA. LBSU then starts a season-long six-match homestand with the Asics Tournament, March 13-14, in the Walter Pyramid. The top eight teams in the MPSF advance to the conference tournament with the quarterfinals being held at campus sites on April 25. The semifinals and finals are slated to take place, April 30-May 1, with the winner earning an automa c bid to the NCAA Championships at Stanford, May 7-9.
