4 Season Outlook After winning its sixth Big West Conference championship two years ago, the Long Beach State softball team is looking to reclaim the title and make its 20th NCAA Tournament appearance in Our goals for this season are to play as a team and to continue to be one of the top teams in the country, said fourth-year 49er head coach Kim Sowder. We want to have a preseason that shows continuous improvement and puts us in a strong position going into conference. The Beach is primed to continue a long tradition of success in 2010 with 13 letterwinners returning from last year s squad that posted the program s eighth consecutive winning season and advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the second year in a row. The 49ers, who fi nished third in the Big West, had a school-record tying eight players earn all-conference honors. Despite the loss of fi ve seniors to graduation, LBSU is loaded with experience. The 49ers have 11 upperclassmen, seven of whom were members of the 2008 Big West championship squad. PITCHERS Perhaps the biggest strength of the Long Beach State softball team this year is its pitching staff. The Beach has claimed at least a share of the Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year award over the last three years, and all three of those winners are back for the 2010 season. I expect our pitching staff to lead the way for our team this year, said Sowder. Between the Senior catcher Brandy Reyes was an All-Big West honorable mention selection in three of them we have a lot of experience and have had a lot of success behind all of them. They are all very different pitchers and will work together to get the job done for the team in the circle. Leading the way will be All-American Brooke Turner. Turner enters her junior campaign ranked among the 49er career leaders in strikeouts (3rd, 394), shutouts (8th, 23), wins (9th, 45) and complete games (10th, 53). Turner, a two-time all-conference selection, was the fi rst dual major award winner in league history in 2008, claiming Big West Pitcher of the Year and Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year honors. posting a.250 batting average with three home runs, nine doubles and 18 RBI. Kristen is a very solid catcher with a lot of experience behind the plate, said Sowder. Offensively, she has great power and the ability to drive in a lot of runs. Reyes, a transfer from St. John s, had an outstanding fi rst year at The Beach, garnering All-Big West honorable mention recognition. She hit for a.239 average with 19 RBI. She also threw out 15-of-19 runners attempting to steal. Brandy had a great year behind the plate in her fi rst season as a 49er, Sowder said. She will be playing key roles both offensively and defensively this year. Freshman Dana Garcia adds a third option at the catcher position for Long Beach State. She was a four-time All-Suburban League selection at La Mirada High School. INFIELDERS With the loss of three starters in the infield, Long Beach State will be looking for a handful of newcomers to step in immediately. Junior transfers Christina Schallig (fi rst base) and Liz Javier (third base) are expected to see time at the corners. Schallig played one year of softball at California, garnering All-Pac-10 honorable mention recognition after hitting for a.339 average with 39 runs scored and 41 RBI. Javier, meanwhile, Also returning for the 49ers is 2009 co-big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year and fi rst-team all-conference selection Taylor Petty. Petty fi nished her fi rst season at The Beach with a 15-4 overall record, compiling 134 strikeouts and a league-leading 1.39 earned run average. Rounding out the pitching staff is senior Bridgette Pagano, who started the streak of Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year winners by claiming the award in Pagano, a two-time all-conference selection, has compiled a 2.32 earned run average and 208 strikeouts in her three years at The Beach. Junior All-American Brooke Turner will look to lead an experienced 49er pitching staff. CATCHERS LBSU welcomes back its two catchers from 2009 in Kristen Pocock and Brandy Reyes. Both split time behind the plate and at designated player last year. Pocock played in 49 games, Senior Kristen Pocock will see time behind the plate and at designated player in

5 Season Outlook Freshman Nalani St. Germain, who comes to The Beach from Ayala High School where she was a four-time fi rst-team All-Sierra League selection, will most likely see immediate playing time in the infi eld. OUTFIELDERS Senior Ashley Weber, a 2009 fi rst-team All- Big West selection, will lead the way in the outfi eld this season. Last year, Weber started 55 games, fi nishing second on the team with a.317 batting average and 53 hits. She also set a school single-season record with 26 sacrifi ce hits. Senior Ashley Levine will anchor the infield for the 49ers. comes to The Beach from Mt. San Antonio College, where she led the Mounties to a pair of league and regional titles. Also challenging for time at third base is sophomore Jennifer Madigan. Madigan learned from the best last year, playing behind 2009 Big West Field Player of the Year and current 49er undergraduate assistant Jennifer Griffi n. Anchoring the middle infi eld will be senior Ashley Levine, the 49ers lone returning starter. Levine started 51 games at shortstop in 2009, posting a.932 fi elding percentage. She also hit for a career-high.273 average, with 36 hits, two home runs and 15 RBI. Ashley will be our leader in the infi eld this year, said Sowder. She had a very strong year at shortstop last season and will be even better with a full year of experience at the position to guide her. Offensively, she has improved every year and we are looking for her to stay on that path. Sophomore Alisha Rosen will also be fi ghting for time at shortstop. Senior Jodi Nakawatase returns at second base after starting 37 games last year. Nakawatase compiled a.245 batting average with 24 hits, 12 runs scored and 10 RBI. Jodi is a mature player with strong leadership skills that will help guide our team which includes seven new players, Sowder said. She had a very strong fi nish last year both offensively and at second base. We will look for her to continue to build off that this year. Ashley had a great season last year and will be a key leader both offensively and defensively for us, said Sowder. She knows what it takes to compete at the highest level and has proven to be a clutch player throughout her career at The Beach. When not in the circle, senior Bridgette Pagano may also see some time in the outfi eld. She hit for a.205 average last season with fi ve doubles, one home run and nine RBI. In addition, junior Casey Burba and sophomore Megan Denio will challenge for playing time after primarily seeing action as pinch-runners last season. Adding to the depth in the outfi eld are freshmen Caitrin DeBaun and Bree Stephan. DeBaun was a four-year letterwinner at Rosary High School where she earned league MVP honors and All-CIF recognition as a senior. Stephan, meanwhile, comes to The Beach from Simi Valley High School. Stephan was a threetime fi rst-team all-league selection, while also garnering fi rst-team All-CIF and all-county recognition. Senior Jodi Nakawatase compiled 24 hits, 12 runs and 10 RBI in her fi rst year at The Beach. Senior Ashley Weber garnered fi rst-team allconference honors after posting a.317 batting average in Also in the 49ers arsenal are junior Andrea Littleworth, who will most likely see action as a pinch-hitter. Freshmen outfi elders Brooke Bell and Vanessa Vasquez will also primarily serve as pinch-runners. SCHEDULE Long Beach State will once again face a tough non-conference schedule as it prepares for Big West play, which begins in April. The 49ers are set to face 14 opponents that were either ranked or receiving votes in the NFCA and ESPN.com/ USA Softball preseason polls. Thirteen of the teams on LBSU s slate also advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago. The Beach opens the season at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic in Las Vegas, Feb , and will return to Sin City the following weekend when it takes on ranked foes Georgia Tech and Oklahoma at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. LBSU will also face perennial national powerhouses Stanford, California and UCLA in tournament action. The 49ers are set to host the annual Long Beach State Invitational, which features Purdue, Notre Dame, Buffalo, Idaho State and San Diego, March After playing at UCLA and hosting San Diego State in weekday games, The Beach opens conference play against Pacifi c, April
