6 INTRODUCTION 6 THE BIG 12 CONFERENCE The Big 12 celebrates its 20th year in as it continues to promote the strength and success of one of the nation s premier athletic conferences under the direction of fourth-year commissioner Bob Bowlsby. TCU and West Virginia joined the league on July 1, 2012 and became the Big 12 s first additions since inception, joining Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech. With 10 members, the Big 12 remains as the only major conference in the nation to determine its champions in all sports directly on the field of play with a full round-robin schedule. The Conference s hard work ethic and strong values have translated to enormous success in its first 19 years. Since it began competition in , the league can boast of 54 NCAA team titles and 587 individual national championships. Additionally, the Big 12 has been at the forefront in college athletics reform, specifically with student-athlete welfare issues to include cost of attendance and strengthening its policy for concussion diagnosis and management. In , the Big 12 introduced and hosted three State of Collegiate Athletics forums to examine the issues facing college athletics. Two were conducted in Washington, D.C and one in New York City. Panelists included respected authorities from intercollegiate athletics, university leadership and sports journalism. The third forum featured a special session comprised of student-athletes. The 2014 fall sport season saw Texas become the 13th league volleyball squad to advance to the national semifinals its 10th appearance all-time. This past summer, West Virginia soccer standout Kadeisha Buchanan earned the Hyundai Young Player Award at the 2015 World Cup while playing for her native Canada, given to the player born in 1995 or later that made the biggest impression in the competition. Through its first 19 years, the Big 12 has claimed a team national championship in 17 of the sports it sponsors. The Conference finished the BCS era ranked tied for second with seven appearances in the National Championship Game. League squads combined to lead the nation in women s basketball attendance 15 consecutive years ( not yet available), and the Big 12 is the only conference to surpass the one-million mark in season attendance doing so six times. In men s basketball, the league has had seven teams earn NCAA bids three times in the past six years and every coach has guided a team to the NCAA Tournament, including a nation s-best six coaches that have led teams to the Final Four. During the last 11 years a total of 33 NCAA trophies have been hoisted by Big 12 institutions, with at least one national crown won in all but one year for the Conference, including 18 consecutive seasons. The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or within the community, the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. National academic accolades have always been strong in the Big 12. Gabe Ikard (Oklahoma) was presented the NCAA Today s Top 10 Award in January It recognizes former studentathletes for their successes on the fields and courts, in the classroom and in the community. Eleven times in the past 10 years a league athlete has garnered the top academic honor for their respective sport, including Frances Silva (West Virginia) for soccer and Gabe Ikard (Oklahoma) for football in The Big 12 can take pride in other stories that combine on and off the field success. In the fall of 2013, former Texas Tech track and field student-athlete Ifeatu Okafor was named the Big 12 s first NCAA Woman of the Year. Plus, the Conference contributed $200,000 to the relief efforts. In the fall of 2014, Oklahoma football student-athlete Sterling Shepard and head coach Bob Stoops were honored with the Disney Sports Spirit Award while Kansas football studentathlete JaCorey Shepherd received the Lee Roy Selmon Community Spirit Award. 7 COACHING STAFF 7 HEAD COACH MATT POTTER Tournament for the first time since After three seasons at the helm of the Oklahoma soccer program, head coach Matt Potter has begun to see his vision for the team take shape. A proven leader and builder of successful programs, Potter arrived at OU in December 2011 with the goal of positioning the Sooners as one of the nation s elite soccer teams. In Potter s third season at Oklahoma, the Sooners took a huge step forward. Despite being picked to finish last in the preseason Big 12 poll, Oklahoma earned 10 wins on the way to its first NCAA Tournament berth under Potter. Oklahoma posted victories over five ranked teams on the season, most notably No. 6 Florida on August 29. The team s strong start led to its highest ranking in program history, a No. 15 spot in the NSCAA poll. After a tough stretch of Big 12 play, the Sooners were able to rally for a Halloween night win over No. 14 Kansas before taking their first two matches of the Big 12 Tournament. They finished as runners-up in Kansas City and earned a trip to the NCAA Perhaps the most impressive thing about Oklahoma s 2014 squad was its youth. The roster was composed of ten freshmen and 12 sophomores, and inexperienced Sooners saw significant playing time. Potter got the most out of his young lineup, and he guided defender Laura Rayfield and midfielder Lizzie Luallin to All-Big 12 Newcomer team honors. In his second season as head coach, the Sooners finished with a record, recording shutouts for all four wins and battlng to a 1-1 tie at Utah. Potter also helped guide two freshmen to solid seasons with midfielders Jemma Cota and Paige Jacobs earning selections to the All-Big 12 Newcomer team. Potter led Oklahoma to a record in his first season as head coach, the most wins by a rookie head coach in Sooner history. Potter s squad also qualified to the program s third consecutive Big 12 tournament, another first for the program. Perhaps one of the crowning moments of the season for his team was a 1-0 upset win over in-state rival and then-no. 3 ranked Oklahoma State in Norman on Sept. 7, In addition to the achievements of the team as a whole, Potter s guidance led to multiple individuals to successful seasons. Senior forward Renae Cuellar had a breakout season at OU after transferring from Arizona. Cuellar was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, the first Sooner in program history to earn the title. Cuellar was also named to the NCAA Division I All-Central Region first team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and captured first All-Big 12 and Big 12 All-Newcomer team honors. A hallmark of any Potter-led team is achievement in the classroom as well as on the field, and the 2012 Sooners followed suit under his leadership. The squad earned Team Academic Award Recognition from the NSCAA, carrying a team grade point average of In addition, senior Katharine Nutman earned 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 7 Women s Soccer first team honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Prior to his arrival at Oklahoma, Potter established Washington State s program into one of the Pac-12 s elite with a school record 88 wins ( overall) at the helm, including five double-digit win seasons and three appearances in the NCAA tournament. The Cougars advanced into the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2011 and Prior to his arrival, Washington State advanced to three NCAA tournaments since the program s inception in While coaching 32 all-conference selections and seven players that have taken part of national team camps or competitions at Washington State, the program s success in the classroom did not go unnoticed during Potter s tenure. He has helped mentor 108 student-athletes that have earned academic all-conference accolades and Washington State received the NSCAA Team Academic Award in 2011, marking the seventh time the program earned the honor under Potter. Potter took leadership of the Cougar program in July of 2003, just a few months after being named an assistant in February. Potter was in his first season after taking over for Dan Tobias, who took the head coaching job at the University of Arizona in Following his debut season, Potter s Cougar teams rattled off six straight winning seasons and the 2006 squad tied a program record with 10 shutouts. In the past five seasons on the field, Washington State has enjoyed four campaigns with double-digit wins and a combined record. The Cougars were also ranked in the top 25 polls in four of those seasons, including a school record eight straight weeks in Most recently, Washington State returned to the big dance in 2011 and advanced to the second round for the second time in the last three years. The Cougars posted a overall record and a fourth-place finish in the Pac-12 with a program best six wins in conference play (6-3-2 mark). Four Cougars earned all-conference honors and two were named to the coaches association all-region team. The Cougars tied a program record for wins with 14 in 2009 after topping Villanova in the first round of the NCAA tournament. It marked the first back-to-back appearances in the postseason for Washington State.
