BACK TO BIG 12 PLAY After playing a pair of non-conference matches last week, the Oklahoma soccer team jumps back into its Big 12 slate when it hosts No. 4 West Virginia before traveling to Kansas. The Sooners will face the Mountaineers at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Oct. 9, and take on the Jayhawks at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, Oct. 11. Friday s match will air live on FOX Sports Oklahoma, FOX Sports Southwest Plus and FOX College Sports Atlantic through Sooner Sports TV. Sunday s contest will be available on ESPN3.com. 2. FACING THE TOP 25 OU continues to face stout competition as five of its 2015 opponents are currently ranked or receiving votes in the NSCAA/ Continental Tire poll, including West Virginia at No. 4. So far this season, the Sooners are against ranked opponents. OU defeated then-no. 18 Arizona State by a 2-0 score and also faced South Carolina and Stanford, who were ranked No. 11 and No. 2, respectively, by the NSCAA at time of competition. The Sooners, who received 64 points in this week s poll, tied with No. 15 Texas Tech. 3. CONTINUING THE STREAK The Sooners will look to continue their six-match unbeaten streak when West Virginia comes to Norman. Over their last six contests, the Sooners have gone and have outscored opponents by a 10 to two margin. The Sooners will look for their first win over West Virginia on Friday. The last meeting between the two schools occurred at the 2014 Big 12 Soccer Championship in Kansas City, Mo., where No. 6 seed OU finished as the runner-up to No. 1 seed WVY by a score of RPI UPDATE The Sooners come in at No. 43 in this week s NCAA Women s Soccer RPI, the third best in the Big 12. West Virginia (No. 13), Texas Tech (No. 32), Kansas (No. 67), Texas (No. 58) and TCU (No. 80) are all within the top 100 of the rankings. 5. DEPTH KEY FOR SOONERS A total of 24 Sooners have made an appearance in at least one match this season. In nine contests, OU has recorded 27 goals from 13 different players. Notching multiple scores for the Sooners have been junior Caren Nelson and freshman Kaylee Dao with four each and freshmen Emily Parker with three. Junior Liz Keester and sophomores Tori Bowman, Lizzie Luallin and Rasha Roberts have each scored two apiece. Additionally, 10 players have at least one assist. She has the most game-winning goals (three), which ties the Big 12 high. She also has the most points for the Sooners (nine) and is tied for most goals (four). After recording the game winner in two straight matches (at Oral Roberts, at Illinois State), Dao earned Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors. OU is currently tied for third in goals (27), fourth in goals per game (2.23), fourth in total points (68) and fourth in assists (14). Junior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 29 following two shutouts to start conference play. The next week, on Oct. 6, freshman Kaylee Dao secured Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors after recording backto-back, game-winning goals. Senior defender Laura Rayfield was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week and CS360 Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 22 following OU s wins over Tulsa and No. 18 Arizona State. Rayfield also received the honor from College Soccer Head coach Matt Potter led Oklahoma to a breakthrough season in his third season at the helm of the program, returning OU to the NCAA Tournament and helping the Sooners break the 10-win mark for the first time since Potter guided five players to All-Big 12 honors: Devin Barrett (Tournament), Madeline Brem (Tournament), Abby Hodgen (Tournament), Lizzie Luallin (Newcomer) and Laura Rayfield (Newcomer, Tournament). In his second season as head coach, the Sooners finished with a record, recording shutouts for all four wins and battling to a 1-1 tie at Utah. Potter also helped guide two freshmen to solid seasons with midfielders Jemma Cota and Paige Jacobs earning selections to the All-Big 12 Newcomer team. Potter led Oklahoma to a record in his first season as head coach, the most wins by a rookie head coach in Sooner history. Potter s squad also qualified to the program s third consecutive Big 12 tournament, another first. Senior Renae HEAD COACH MATT POTTER 360 on Sept. 1. Junior Caren Nelson s hat trick against UTSA on Sunday, Sept. 6 was just the third in OU history and matched the school standard for most goals in a contest. She joins Logan Womack (vs. Baylor on Sept. 27, 2002) and Whitney Palmer (vs. Tulsa on Aug. 30, 2009) as the Sooners with hat tricks. Nelson s was the fastest in OU history (goals in 12th, 14th and 17th minutes). The Sooners matched a school record when they recorded eight goals against UTSA (eight goals scored three other times in program history). Seven of those goals came in the first 17 minutes of the game. Freshman Kaylee Dao s score in 18 seconds against Oklahoma State on Friday, Aug. 30 was the second-fastest goal in OU program history behind Whitney Palmer s score in 11 seconds against Kansas on Oct. 10, Just five Sooners have scored in under a minute in program history. MATCH BITS: WEST VIRGINIA West Virginia leads the all-time series with the Sooners by a mark of The Mountaineers are this season and are riding a 10-match win streak. As of Oct. 7, WVU s 11 wins and 10 shutouts are tied for No. 1 in the NCAA. Ten players have combined to score 30 WVU goals this season, led by eight from sophomore forward Michaela Abam. MATCH BITS: KANSAS Sunday will be the 21st time OU and Kansas have met. KU leads the series, The Jayhawks entered the weekend at overall, including a mark in Big 12 play and a record on the road. Senior midfielder Liana Salazar and freshman midfielder Grace Hagan lead the Jayhawks with four goals scored apiece. Kansas has scored 17 goals this season from a combined seven players. UP NEXT The Sooners stay on the road to face Baylor at 8 p.m. CT on Friday, Oct. 16 in Waco, Texas. Cuellar was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, NCAA Division I All-Central Region first team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and captured first All-Big 12 and Big 12 All-Newcomer team honors.
