Instead of focusing on a specific fundamental movement skill, this time we are looking at developing upper body strength, which, research tells us, children in New Zealand are generally lacking. Be sure to check out our handy tips and upcoming workshop below. Tania, Geogina and Dayle Young Persons Team Te Ao Kori and Te Reo PE Workshop Learn how to teach specifc fundamental movement skills using a sporting context. This course will focus on the fundamental skill of striking and how to integrate Te Ao Kori and the use of Te Reo into all your PE programmes. 2 Fundamentals, Activities & Games Upper Body Development Upper body development is about developing the gross (large) muscles in the upper body. These need to be developed first before the fine muscles (fine motor skills) can be developed. For example, children must learn to control and develop their arm and shoulder muscles first before being able to control their fingers to hold a pencil and write. Most children who do not enjoy writing at school, often have poor upper body control, cannot support their body weight by their hands and choose to avoid such weight bearing activities. The maturation process is top down and inside out, big muscles to small muscles: 1. Head control is gained 2. The shoulder and upper arms gain strength 3. Then the rest of the upper body and trunk 4. Followed by the hips and pelvis 5. Lastly the legs Swinging and hanging: Have opportunities available for children to hang and swing, this means they are holding their own weight with their arms. Bars, ropes, poles and swings are great for this. If the child does not like the feel of the rope, cut the end off an old sock and put it over where they touch the rope. Idea: Place a box to one side of the rope and a landing mat on the other and see if the children can swing from the box and land on the mat. Monkey Bars: Swinging on monkey bars is a great way to develop upper body development. It also introduces the skill of brachiating (hand over hand) and the correct grip (thumb under). Climbing: Helps with upper body development and also helps to incorporate the legs; climbing often means cross patterning. Tie a rope up the top of the slide or slope and children have to pull themselves up. Use a ladder, cargo netting or climb trees. Wheelbarrows: Hold the child s legs (above the knee) so the child is holding their own weight with their upper body. Then using their hands, get the child to move forward. This is also great to help stimulate the vestibular (balance) system as their head is lower than their body. Row-row your boat: In pairs, children hold hands and gently pull each other back and forth using their upper body. Animal Walks: Using different animal walks often mean holding ones weight with the upper body or using gross motor skills e.g. try walking like a bear, frog leap, puppy dog walk, bunny hop, seal walk, worm crawl, or crab walk. Challenge Course: Create a challenge course where the children have to do the whole thing like an animal on their hands and feet. Make them go under and over things, through, up and down things. They could also do it as a bunny hop. Upper Body activities for under 5s Crawling: Not all children will crawl but it is always a good thing to go back to. Make tunnels to crawl through, incorporate it into challenge courses, games or even use it as an alternative locomotion to get from A to B. Tug of war: If you do not have a rope, use a sheet or parachute. With younger children have them sitting on the ground this makes it a bit simpler and also means they are focusing on just using upper body strength. Bridges and Tunnels: Get the children to make a bridge with their body and then another child can go through the tunnel. Get all of the children to line up and make bridges. Take turns to go through the tunnels. Clock faces: Draw a clock with a centre spot on the concrete. Ask the children to put their feet on the centre point and their hands on the ground at 12 o clock. Get them to keep their feet still and move their hands around to 1 o clock, 2 o clock etc. Get them to always go clockwise at first. Dumper Truck: Get the children to go down onto their hands and knees. Place a bean bag or something small on the child s back. They can move around like a truck and when they want to dump their load they lift their hips into the air so that their hands and feet are the only body parts left on the floor. 2 Excellent sport and recreation experiences for young people

3 Fundamentals, Activities & Games Upper Body activities for primary aged children Effective arm movement and control is only possible when core (trunk) strength and stability are present. A stable core provides a solid base of support from which the arms and legs are free to move with precision and control. Core muscles are those muscles that stabilise the shoulder, spine and pelvis. Postural control refers to the ability to maintain an upright trunk position. This is an important skill needed for developing fine motor skills. Without good postural control, a child may have difficulty maintaining an upright sitting posture and may fatigue easily when sitting at a desk in school. Plus using the hands well will be difficult. When postural control is adequate, the hands may be used effectively for working on table top tasks, such as writing and cutting with scissors. For the hands to work well, strength, stability and mobility are necessary in the shoulders and forearms. Trunk stability Play throwing and catching games in a kneeling position. Shoulder strength and stability Obstacle courses and circuits are ideal ways to incorporate these types of activities Crawl on all fours: forwards, backwards, sideways or change direction on command. Animal Walking: Try gorilla crouch walking, bear walking, inchworm walking, snake or commando crawl (low crawl on your elbows and knees with pelvis flat) to squeeze under a low limbo stick. While in a crab walking position, kick a balloon and keep it up in the air for as long as possible or place a beanbag on the stomach and keep it there for the duration of the journey. Strengthen the arms on the playground: Swing on monkey bars, trapeze bar, ladders. Other playground activities: Do donkey kicks Shoot baskets with all types of balls Play tug of war Push and pull each other while sitting on rolling chairs or rolling stools Wheelbarrows: Ensure legs are held up and straight. Initially it might be very hard so only do it for a short time. As time progresses children will be able to do more and more. Once they get better you can leave balls or toys around to walk to and pick up. They can put each item they pick up into a bucket or box. To avoid straining children s backs, make sure they lift up their bottom so they are protecting their back. For more ideas check out: The big push Facing each other, put your hands together, both of you keeping elbows slightly bent (not locking the elbow joints ensures that the shoulder muscles do as much work as possible). Stand with one foot behind the other and on the count of three, push each other as hard as possible until one of you has to take a step. Chair push-ups Put your hands on either side of your chair, and push until your bottom rises off the chair. Hold for 5 counts. If this is too easy, ask the child to lift their feet off the floor and hold them off while raising their bottom, and hold for 5 counts. For those children who are ready to consolidate their skills try: Climbing on equipment FMS Manual pg. 134 Inverted balances FMS Manual pg. 135 Excellent sport and recreation experiences for young people 3

4 Sport Tip - GymSports NZ GymSports New Zealand suggest using a wall to help build necessary upper body and core strength when teaching handstands. Children can practice their handstand position by walking their feet up the wall, keeping a tight core and not arching their backs. To challenge them, try getting them to walk their hands as close to the wall as they can, and then back out before walking their feet down the wall to the floor. Sport Programmes for your School Want to find out what sport programmes are available to primary and intermediate schools? Sport Wellington has a page on our website where teachers can access information about sport programmes that could be run in your school to support the teaching of specific fundamental movement skills. Hockey, swimming, sailing and taekwon-do are just some of the sports avaliable. Check out: 4 Excellent sport and recreation experiences for young people

8 Interschool Sport News 2013 Wellington Regional School Cross-country Photo by Nesport Photography The Regional Cross-country Championships for primary and intermediate schools was held at Rathkeale College in Masterton. Amidst the days of storms and rain that had been buffeting the Wellington region, dawned a beautiful windless sunny day perfect for running. This is a very important event in the cross-country programme. From this a team of 80 runners from Years 5-8 are selected to represent the Wellington Region in the inter-regional event to be held in Nelson in late September. Over 700 year 4-8 runners, including athletes with disabilities, from nine sporting associations descended on the college grounds to fiercely contest the various year level races. The courses were long, flat, a little wet underfoot in parts and passed through the picturesque grounds of the college with views of the Tararuas on one side and the Ruamahanga River on the other. It is the 8th year that this has been organised by Primary Sport Wellington in association with Andrea Foster from Masterton Primary Sports Association, and Athletics Wellington. Rathkeale College were great hosts and on behalf of all runners, parents and event managers, I would like to thank them for opening their grounds, assisting with setup and providing personnel, catering and equipment for this large event. Their assistance was invaluable and contributed greatly to the success of this event. This event would not happen without the many volunteers who so generously gave up their time. Our thanks must also be extended to Geoff Henry, and his Athletics Wellington Officials; Andrea Foster, Masterton Primary Sports Association; Clare Crawford, South Wairarapa Primary School Sports Association; Willie Kersten, Brian James, Steve Coleman and the students from Rathkeale College as well as all the officials from the various sporting organisations that made this day possible.
