FOOTNOTES CLEVEDON AC S NEWSLETTER / AUGUST 2015 Dear readers Hope you re all well and enjoying these odd days of beautiful sunshine. Doesn t the sun make life feel generally better? Hope your running is going well and not too hot for you all. I m a bit hot and bothered having had my foot finally operated on (Morton s Neuroma removed). I m now confined to the sofa in an elevated position for a month. It isn t often I get a chance to sit and relax feels odd and I can t wait to get started again. All things being right and fair, I ll be able to start running in about three months before Christmas hopefully so looking forward to seeing you all and making some ultra-marathon plans for Someone asked me if I m being a patient patient... I think only Bob can answer that one! Happy running, holidays etc... The Editor (Laura) From the Chairman... Su Well the summer is allegedly now here and we are entering the "silly season" where everyone is either away on holiday or about to go. Thanks to Simon for organising a well-attended Beach BBQ a few weeks ago. On a sad note I am sure everyone is now fully aware that Kevin Hetherington passed away on 20 July after a heart attack - Kev had been a supportive member of Clevedon AC since 1980 and will be sadly missed by us all. Neil Manners has put together an article about Kevin on the next page. On a brighter note we are all delighted to hear the news of Morph and Sally's wedding planned for next January. Tuesday and Thursday training sessions continue to go well and my thanks to everyone involved in structuring these sessions. The Midland Road Relays next month will be an excellent event and hopefully we can field as many teams as possible - please make sure you let Morph and Sally know of your availability. Also the annual trek to Dartmouth for the Regatta 5 Mile Race on Saturday 29 August which is always a great camping weekend. Enjoy the rest of the summer break and stay fit and injury-free. Andy
Our good friend and fellow athlete, Kevin Hetherington recently had a fatal heart attack at the start of a training run in Clevedon. Kevin joined Clevedon Athletic Club a year after its formation in 1977 and was a popular and always present member of the club both in competition and helping at events. As a distance runner, he recorded excellent times particularly in marathon and ultra-distance events. He ran the first London marathon and also the first Bristol marathon, both in good times. Kevin never missed the club running/social weekends such as the Merthyr Mawr training camps, the Castles relays and the Dartmouth events and always added his particularly Northern sense of humour. The canoeing trips at Hay on Wye will always be remembered with Kevin s technique of only paddling in circles down the fast flowing river. More recently he was always present at our meal get togethers at the Harp every Thursday providing us with his never lost Newcastle accent - running facts and figures dating back to the seventies. He will be sadly missed by all his friends in Clevedon Athletic Cub and his big contribution to the comradery of the club.
This month from Nick The Machine Hides... My claim to fame is... when I was 14 l entered the Daily Mail darts tournament and got through to the semi final for the regional qualifiers. My hero is... Sir Steve Redgrave, for his outstanding commitment to his sport. I think l am quite good at... team events. My proudest running achievements are... winning the Castles relay - both the overall and the vet trophies. Running 2:42 for the London Marathon; cycling Land s End to John O'Groats twice! Running Land s End to John O'Groats; running Coast to Coast; the South west coastal path and around the Isle of Wight. My favourite race is... the London Marathon, because of the atmosphere, crowd support and organisation. If I am not running... you can find me either swimming or cycling
This month Donna has provided us with this lovely route may be one for an annual club run Marie, Sally and I got up rather early on Sunday morning - we met up at 5:30am! Marie then kindly drove us to Backwell Common where we parked up and admired the beautiful sunrise before heading off along the cycle paths to Ashton Court. The route is lovely and we even spotted some deer in the field. The route there was approximately 5.5 miles and was very well signposted the whole way - simply follow the blue signs numbered 33. Just before we arrived at the Ashton Court gates, we saw the first of the balloons take off. With Garmins stopped, we ventured into the grounds to watch the rest of the mass ascent - whilst enjoying an energy gel - we know how to party ;) Then it was time to turn around and head back to the car...complete with very stiff legs! This was a lovely route and the balloons were amazing. It would be great to make this an annual long run for the club.
It is a very warm welcome to our recent new joiners. From left to right... Jane Roberts - building up to a 10k Pauline McGinn - training for the Bath Half Katie Watts - building up to a 10k Tom Abrahams - aiming for a marathon (possibly Paris) Good luck to you all with your training and your goals!
20 members of Clevedon AC recently raced in the Avon County Mob Match finishing a very creditable 5th position overall. Alex Crossland finished 3rd in 32:55 with Luke Murray 5th 33:38. Matt Crocker 22nd 37:10 and Clive Richards 27th 38:05. Andy Heyes 42nd 38:39 with Jim Hardcastle 47th 39:04. Steve Wood 59th 39:41 and Phil Collins 66th 39:57. Tom Abrahams 72nd 40:25 with Nigel Charman 80th 41:02. Jason Lammie in his first outing for the club 95th 41:37 with Laura Meech 113th 42:20. Mike Andrews 152nd 44:19 and Donna Davies 156th 44:25. Dave Bray 168th 45:08, James Hollis 174th 45:30 and Geoff Binns 186th 46:02. Chris Davies 192nd 46:14, Sally Dennis 206th 47:29 and Marie Lochrie 250th 50:21. Special thanks to Laura Croker for her administrating and to all those who travelled and raced. This race is a great team event so would encourage everyone to take part next year all local clubs are invited to field teams of 20+ so there s great camaraderie and good to meet up with our own team mates and those friendly faces from other clubs.
I thought it would be appropriate for me to find an article about feet and how we generally take them for granted I m thinking I probably have... The foot is a structure made up of 33 joints and 26 bones and it is a complex formation at the end of the leg. It enables humans to do a variety of things such as walking, running, dancing, jumping, hopping and many more activities. It is similar to the hand in some ways, but the foot just bears more weight and so it has more strength and mobility. The Creature knew exactly what he was doing when he made us with feet because without them I can t imagine how we as humans would be able to move about. Just imagine what we would look like if he had constructed us from the waist down like a snake. We would use our muscles to slither around, and I am sure none of us can stomach the concept of this picture. Most of us took nine to eighteen months with up to a total of 1,000 hours of practice to be able to make use of our feet and walk during the time we were babies. We did not do it alone because along the way we had a bit of help with our practice from our mummies and daddies include other members of our families. During those times, we took small infant steps and as we improved, our steps became longer and displayed a heel to toe rhythmical movement during the process. Maybe the cats and dogs had a hand in it too, because there is the possibility that we tried to sprint toward them with our feet and cried out Kitty or Doggy, with our small infant voices. The feet have enabled man to venture near and far including into the unknown and if it was not for our feet, I doubt if humans would be the superior animal on this planet today. Our feet have been used in all manners of activities. They have been used to kick down doors, kick others in their heads, enabled one to be swift and escape from danger and much more. The world Gold Cup was awarded to Germany who used their feet to kick a ball through a goal and become the World Champion of Football in Brazil. The foot has been one of our best entertainers next to the mouth and we enjoy a lot of merriment from its use and watching a dancer do their swift steps, glides, Waltz, Tango, Slow Foxtrot, Quickstep, Cha Cha dance, Samba, Rumba and other types of dancing. There is also the matter of the parade of Soldiers that march around leading their feet in an orderly and disciplined manner.
Our feet can make us miserable if we do not extend the proper care and attention to them. Misery will come in the form of smell, ache, blister, sweat, itch and peel. Therefore, it s time we start to acknowledge the importance of our feet. Therefore, we need to ensure that we select the proper shoes to wear or the consequences will be bad. For example, if a shoe is too short, it will cause black toenails, Shoes that is too wide will cause undue friction that leads to blisters and Shoes that are too narrow can cause, calluses, corns, pinched nerve pain, and bunions. What we choose to put on our feet does reflect something about us and it shows whether we are keen style savvy, lazy or obliviousness plus more. That I why it is vital that we select the proper shoes for our feet, according to the image we wish to project, about ourselves. So let us step up our footwear by wearing sensible shoes that will earn us the respect that we deserve. Today a person judge us according to what type of shoes we have on our feet and by wearing the wrong shoes for certain event such as a job interview can delete our chances of landing the job we deserve, include chase away the type of lady we want to meet in our circle. The type of shoes we prefer also talk to others by saying things like; here is an easy going guy, he is a cheap person but honest, however, he is never on time. I guess you have already gotten the picture. Our feet are the workhorses of our body and we need to ensure that they are properly cared for: We should always bend down and wash our feet include between the toes with soap and water regularly whenever we bath. Washing with warm water is best and we should always dry our feet completely between the toes. Switch shoes every day and this means having two or more pair of shoes. For example, if you wear one pair of shoes today, avoid wearing it tomorrow so that it can be aired out in order not to trigger odours or foot infections Ensure that the shoes we wear are comfortable as possible and should not be tight, wide or narrow. Let us give our feet the proper respect they deserve by putting them in the right place and stand tall, then looking to the heavens, and whisper thank you, dear God, for our two honourable feet. Amen! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own, and you know what you know. And you are the guy who'll decide where to go Dr. Seuss
