1 Feb/March 2016 Oh The Places You ll Go By Holly and Terry Reiling Volume 20, Issue 1 Walking with friends, enjoying local sights, learning local lore, much laughter and chatter while stretching legs and lifting spirits - this and more beckon us to hit the trails. But the pleasures don't stop with local regular and year round events. Avid volksmarchers recognize there is a great walking world out there to be discovered. With a little bit of research using the AVA web site, travels to new places are enhanced with YRE trails thoughtfully designed by our fellow walking clubs. YREs seem to be organized to capture the best of the particular locale - weaving history, architecture, culture, nature, outdoor art, fine food and other points of interest - within the walk's parameters. No previous experience with the locale, start location, or walking club necessary! No matter the club, town, state, region, or even country, all one has to do is request the Walk Box stored at the designated start location, register, grab a copy of the start card, walking route, and step off following the detailed directions that begin right out the door. By the way, don't forget to stamp AVA books and thank the proprietor for housing the walk box. Could it be that easy? With such a precise system in place, yes it is. Ah, the places we have seen, the kilometers we have walked, the people we have met, the history & cultures we have explored. Dr. Seuss, in The Places You'll Go, put it so well - "You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose...oh the places you'll go! There is fun to be done!... You're off to Great Places! Today is your day! So... get on your way! Stay tuned as each of the next newsletters will include us in on the delightful travels of Holly and Terry. President s Corner Happy New Year! A year ago, we ended our year with our Time to Walk event at Lake Junaluska, and with it set an Amblers record of 54 participants for a club event. We did not quite match that with our final event for this last season, but had an excellent turnout at another lake, Lake Lure, with over 40 walkers, and 40 attending the excellent Holiday Luncheon that followed. We began this year with another great turnout of 46 for our New Year's Day afternoon walk, and once again, our Charleston members, the Crosbys, provided champagne at the finish. We have an exciting year planned, with a new walk in Charleston, and two very special Regular Events accompanied by Seasonal Walks in those areas to attract more. We are also planning a club boat ride on Lake Lure and a weekend Mystery Trip. We hope you will be excited to participate and help where needed. To keep informed, please be sure to renew your Amblers membership, and have a wonderful year of fun, fellowship, and exercise as an Ambler. Perry Rawson

3 TRAVERSE COLUMBIA SOUTH CAROLINA MARCH 5 On Saturday, March 5, we will do our Columbia, SC Capital city YRE. We'll meet at the start point, the Columbia Convention Center, at 12:30 pm to register and step off at 1 pm. We tour the state capital grounds, part of the University of SC, the Governor's Mansion, beautiful neighborhoods and splendid parks. As we will be a month earlier than last year, we won't see as many spring flowers, but there will be some, and trees may be budding. Both a 5 and 10 KM walk are available and the walk is rated 2A (one hill). Information about a lunch spot before the walk, and possible carpooling arrangements will be sent out later. Directions to Start Point: Take I-26 and turn onto I-126 (Downtown Columbia, exit 108) to exit for Huger. Take Huger to Gervais. Left on Gervais to Lincoln. Go right one block on Lincoln, and the Center is on your right. For parking, continue past Center to parking lot at end of building. Opportunity! According to Amblers by-laws, officers for the club are elected every year at the May meeting for terms to begin on July 1. The offices open for election this year are those of President and Vice-president. Jim Walters and I have both served two terms of two years and are termed out. This makes an opportunity for someone new to serve in these positions and help guide the club through some special times as the AVA is making a big push to re-invigorate the national organization. We are also challenged on the local level to keep the members we have, learn how to use them better and be attractive to new people. If you have interest in either of these offices, please contact Perry at hchs59@gmail.com or Jim Walters at jandjwalters@gmail.com. This may be your special chance to make a difference! You will be assisted by an excellent supporting group. COME STROLL SPARTANBURG, SC, FEBRUARY 6TH Come enjoy this lovely city, known for its fountains, and see how many are operating in February. The walk includes an attractive, historic residential district, the campuses of Converse and Wofford Colleges, and Liberty Park. We will meet to register in the coffee room of the YMCA at 12:30 in order to start walking by 1:00 pm. This is reached through the left side (East) entrance of the building. The walks are 6 and 12 km., and the long route usually takes 3 hours. Plan your car pooling accordingly. Margaret Suits will take care of registration and help lead the walk. The start time is late to avoid possible icy roads and early cold. You will need to find a lunch spot before the walk, and Wades at 1000 N. Pine St. on your left on the way in is a good place. We will still stop for an energy boost at Krispy Kreme during the walk. Directions From I-26 or I-85, turn onto Business I-85 to exit 5 and turn toward Spartanburg on I-585/US This becomes Pine Street. Go approx. 4 miles on Pine, crossing Main, then right on Ribault, just past Wendy's. The YMCA is on the left. Use the parking lot on the left side of the building, and that side entrance.
4 MONTREAT LAKE LURE 5K NEW YEARS DAY LAKE LURE GRAZE THRU GREENVILLE FEB 20TH We are back to Greenville for a late winter walk and it will still be beautiful and interesting, with the Reedy River Falls, Cleveland Park, and Liberty Bridge. In the attractive downtown, you can stroll the shops and numerous restaurants. There are abundant good places for lunch, this time before the walk. To get a little warmer start, and to avoid possible icy roads early, we will start registration at 12:30 inside Joel's Coffee Shop, at the front of the Westin Poinsett Hotel at 120 S. Main St., and plan to start walking by 1:00 pm. We have 5 and 11 km. routes, and the long route usually takes nearly 3 hours. Directions: From I-85, Charlotte or Atlanta, take exit 51C. Travel to the third traffic light. Turn left onto N. Main St., and go through 4 traffic lights. The coffee shop is on the right. From I-26 in North Carolina, take exit 54 onto US 25 S to US 276 E ( 27.5 miles). Stay on 276 E (7 miles) until it makes a left turn (do not turn). Go straight one more block, and turn left onto SC 183 (Buncombe Hwy). Go to the 5th traffic light. Turn right on N. Main St. and go through the third traffic light (McBee). The coffee shop is on the right. Parking, if not found on the street, is available in the parking garage behind the Poinsett Hotel, off Court St..
5 MEANDER MORGANTON AND HICKORY Saturday, March 19 will offer a double walking opportunity. We will be joined by members of the Winston Wanderers to walk in Morganton at 10 am, and for those who can, we will go with them to do their walk in Hickory at 2 pm. We will meet to register and pay for the Morganton walk in the Riverside Park next to Judge's Restaurant at 9:30. The walk box will not be available until the restaurant opens at 11, so we will stamp our books after the walk. We will plan lunch at Judge's before going to Hickory, and we will get directions at that time. The plan is to walk the 5 or 10 km. Greenway routes, in order to still be on time for the walk in Hickory. There should be some signs of early spring along these lovely routes. Directions: These are easier for getting to Judge's than those in the MTS book. From I-40, take exit 100 toward Morganton. At the top of the ramp, turn left on Jamestown Road, following purple signs for Judge's Riverside. Go 1.8 miles to 70 E/W, and turn right on 70. Go 0.6 miles to Greenlee Ford Rd., and turn left just after 1st Citizens Bank, and before the SECU sign and Ingle's gas station. Judge's is at the end of the road, and the parking lot is behind it to the right. If coming from the east, follow the directions in the MTS book.
