Please take the time to attend a service in your area. It is about everyone who died that day, not just the first responders. You can check the Gates Police Facebook Page as we get closer; we will have a list of services in the area. Thank you all for your continued partnership and support. These are some very unusual times we are living in. Things like Loyalty, Commitment and Principals.are being put to the test. Don t waver in your stance for what is right or wrong! Display your flag on 9/11 it is a day of pride!

2 HOMELAND SECURITY MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE GLENN GREIBUS This September, National Preparedness Month (NPM) will focus on planning, with an overarching theme Disasters Don t Plan Ahead. You Can. We should all take action to prepare! We are all able to help first responders in our community by training how to respond during an emergency and what to do when disaster strikes where we live, work, and visit. The goal of NPM is to increase the overall number of individuals, families, and communities that engage in preparedness actions at home, work, business, school, and place of worship. Neighbors Comprehensive preparedness requires the whole community to participate and FEMA places tremendous value on communities that embrace a local "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" approach. Neighbors Helping Neighbors empowers community leaders to involve and educate individuals from their community about simple steps one can take to become more prepared. Forty-six percent of individuals expect to rely a great deal on people in their neighborhood for assistance within the first 72 hours after a disaster. When the whole community comes together to respond to and help recover from these emergencies - neighbor helping neighbor - we can often meet the needs of everyone. The Neighbor Helping Neighbor approach seeks to support state, tribal and local agencies, civic organizations, faith-based groups and other community organizations that serve the whole community. FEMA works to provide these organizations with additional tools and preparedness training opportunities so they can become

3 more prepared. This includes Independent Study Community Preparedness: Implementing Simple Activities for Everyone and the Community Preparedness Toolkit. Download the IS-909 Fact Sheet for more information (2-page PDF; 313 KB) General Preparedness Make a family emergency communication plan and include your pets. Identify an out of town emergency contact to coordinate information with family/friends. Check on neighbors. Keep an emergency kit wherever you spend time: home, car, work etc. Download the FEMA App and set up local alerts Listen to local officials by radio, TV, or social media and take action. Practice your preparedness plans with a drill or exercise. Take a first aid class so you can help until first responders arrive. 4 OFFICER LANCE DUFFY GATES POLICE DEPARTMENT It is that time of year again as the summer winds down and the stores are bustling with back to school sales. This is also a time when driving habits need to change. School buses will be picking up and dropping off our students and it is VERY important to be aware of youth activity and school buses around you. Statistics show that about 1,600 students under the age of 15 die each year in the United States due to stopped school bus accidents. When a child is getting on and off a school bus their mind is on other things and they may not be aware of vehicle traffic around them. Each new school year law enforcement across the country pay strict attention on a detail we call Operation Safe Stop. Police will watch problem areas where violators pass stopped school buses. The punishment in courts are as follows; 1st conviction $250-$400 fine and up to 30 days in jail. 2nd conviction within 3 years $600-$750 and 180 days in jail 3rd conviction and or subsequent convictions #750-$1000 and 180 days in jail Remember if you see flashing yellow lights the bus is preparing to pick up or drop off students and flashing red lights means you must STOP and not pass. If you see a trouble area around your home town, notify your local police so we can help to protect our children. Have a safe and happy school year! Officer Lance Duffy

5 ASSISTANT CHIEF DAN DISALVO National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month September is Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month. Atrial fibrillation (also called afib) is an irregular heartbeat (or heart rhythm), and is a major cause of strokes. In addition, afib can lead to heart failure, dementia, and even Alzheimer's disease. What is it? AFib is caused when the two upper chambers of the heart beat unpredictably and sometimes rapidly. These irregular heartbeats can cause blood to collect in the heart and potentially form a clot, which can travel to a person s brain and cause a stroke. While AFib can occur at any age, it is more common in people 65 years and older. AFib is more common in people with high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes. Why it matters AFib itself is not life threatening. However, AFib can cause blood clots. Normally, blood clots are a good thing. It s your body s way of protecting you from bleeding too much if you are injured.

6 When clots form due to AFib, however, this significantly increases your risk of having a stroke. If a clot breaks free and blocks a blood vessel to the brain, you may have a stroke. If you have AFib, you are five times more likely to have a stroke. Furthermore, AFib-related strokes are nearly twice as likely to be fatal or severely disabling as strokes not associated with AFib. The good news is that diagnosing and treating AFib prevents 60 to 80 percent of strokes! AFib Symptoms Sometimes people with AFib will not have any symptoms. This is known as silent AFib and can only be detected during a physical. However, others can experience one or more of the following symptoms: General tiredness or weakness Rapid and irregular heart beat Fluttering in the chest Dizziness or lightheadedness Anxiety or confusion Shortness of breath Chest pain or pressure Low blood pressure Know your pulse Because a rapid heart rate may be a sign of AFib, knowing your pulse rate can alert you to a possible problem. Risk Factors for AFib If you have AFib, you are not alone. About 2.7 million people in the U.S. have AFib. Many people with AFib also have one or more other health problems, such as those listed here. These other medical conditions or factors increase your risk for AFib and make managing AFib more difficult. Age (AFib is more common among people 65 and older; about 11% of people over 80 have AFib) Family history (an increased risk occurs in some families) Gender (women are at greater risk than men) High blood pressure Some chronic conditions (diabetes, sleep apnea, thyroid problems, metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney disease or lung disease) Heart disease (anyone with heart valve problems, congenital heart disease, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, or a history of heart attack or heart surgery) Stimulant use (such as medications, caffeine, tobacco, alcohol) Obesity

7 What is a stroke? A stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery, or a blood vessel breaks and interrupts blood flow to the brain. When this happens, cells in your brain begin to die. The abilities controlled by the damaged area of the brain may be impacted, and stroke survivors may have difficulty with speech, movement or memory. Strokes are very serious especially in people who have AFib. Despite this, doctors and nurses know that most AFib patients do not understand their increased risk of stroke. Many people misjudge the impact an AFib-related stroke can have on their daily life and activities. Stroke is a medical emergency! Do you know the warning signs of a stroke? Learn and use the FAST acronym to quickly identify stroke:

8 Sergeant Jared R. René See Something, Say Something As part of my duties here at the Greece Police Department, I attend Neighborhood Watch Meetings as often as I can. We have approximately 20 Neighborhood Watch groups in town and most of them hold a meeting or two each year. During these meetings, I am always astounded by the number of people who say things like I saw a suspicious person on my street last night or someone rummaged through a bunch of cars on our street or I had a strange person come to my door last week and ask me odd questions or I think there maybe someone squatting in a house down the street..you get the point. My first question to ALL of them is DID YOU CALL 911?? I can t tell you how many bashful No s I get to this question. Then I get defensive replies such as, I was too busy to call or I didn t want to bother you guys or you have more important things to do. This is frustrating; for them and for us. If we don t know, how can we help? Among other things, the relationship between local law enforcement and the community should be characterized as a partnership. It should be a team of people with one common goal PUBLIC SAFETY. Here are a couple reminders about your most helpful role on the team Communicate with us, as often as needed. You are not bothering us; calls for suspicious people/circumstances are our job.

9 Gather as much information as you can and then describe specifically what you observed, including: Who or what you saw; When you saw it; Where it occurred; and Why it's suspicious. When reporting suspicious activity, contact your local law enforcement agency first. If there is an emergency, call ***There is a growing trend in which people will post suspicious activity and/or crimes to social media accounts prior to contacting law enforcement. Social media can be used as a great tool; especially for law enforcement. However, it should not be used as the original notification source. Please call or contact local law enforcement first. 10 Back to School Safety Tips Students in the Greece Central Schools will return to class on September 6, 2017 Ridge Road Fire District asks that community members review several important safety tips. Given how often students are on their phones texting, browsing the internet or playing games, the Ridge Road Fire District recommends that guardians talk to students about following safety tips provided by the National Safety Council (NSC): Never walk while texting. If you need to send a text, move out of the way of others and stop on the sidewalk. Never cross the street while using an electronic device. Look left, right, and then left again before crossing the street. Cross only at crosswalks. Drivers should be on increased alert when traveling through school zones and should NEVER text and drive. Additionally, the NSC reminds operators that: In a school zone, when flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection. Always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign. Take extra care to look out for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks, and in all residential areas. Don t honk or rev your engine to scare a pedestrian, even if you have the right of way. Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians. To best ensure that children who travel to school by bus get there safely, students follow these tips from the NSC: Getting on the bus: When waiting for the bus, stay away from traffic and avoid roughhousing or other behavior that can lead to carelessness. Line up away from the street as the bus approaches. Wait until the bus has stopped and the doors open before approaching.

11 Behavior on the bus: If available, always wear your seat belt. Don t put your head, arms or hands out the window. Wait for the bus to stop completely before getting up from your seat. Getting off the bus: If you have to cross in front of the bus, walk at least 10 feet ahead until you can see the driver. Make sure the driver can see you too. Wait for a signal from the driver before crossing. When the driver signals, look left, right, then left again. Walk across the road and keep an eye out for sudden traffic changes.
