3 Celebrating 20 Years! The Summerlin Council is proud to present The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade, celebrating 20 years of family fun on the 4th of July! This year we not only commemorate the spirit of Independence Day, we also celebrate the parade s 20-year anniversary as well as the 150th anniversary of Nevada s admission to the Union. The 20th anniversary of The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade is an official event of Nevada s year-long sesquicentennial celebration! For the second consecutive year we are thrilled to welcome Governor Brian Sandoval, who joins us this year on a special Nevada 150th birthday celebration float. Another special addition to the parade is an entry featuring winners of the parade s 20th anniversary photo memory contest. Congratulations to first place winner Robert Kotchkowski! Keep an eye out for him and his winning photo in the parade. We ve added several fun new elements this year including a Frozen moviethemed float; a My Little Pony themed 25-foot tall inflatable balloon; a Jungle Book themed entry featuring a 74-foot-long snake; and The Glamorous Miss Piggy mascot. In all, The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade will feature more than 70 entries including traditional floats, exciting bands and performing groups, pop culture icons and more than 25 Macy s-style giant inflatable balloons. Of course, the parade wouldn t be complete without our fan favorites including An All Star Salute to the Military float, Undersea Jubilee float, Danza Del Carrizo Native American performing group and the Neon City Garrison costuming club decked-out in Star Wars regalia. We are delighted to have them join the lineup once again. A special thanks to the more than 2,500 people participating in the parade and the more than 500 volunteers who help with parade operations. Without them, The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade wouldn t be the incredible success it is or provide the wonderful opportunity to celebrate Independence Day in grand Summerlin style! The atmosphere and energy was so patriotic that I fell in love with it! Summerlin has such a great community for families. The heat won t keep us away every year! After graduating from the University of Texas Arlington with a degree in Radio and Television, Sherry worked in Dallas, Fresno, Los Angeles and San Francisco before moving to Las Vegas in Outside of work, Sherry enjoys spending time with her family, serving on the board of the Southwest Chapter of the Alzheimer s Association and visiting schools to talk weather with kids. Brian Loftus joined the 8 News Now team in 2009 and is currently the morning news anchor. Brian earned a B.A. in English from the University of Iowa and Masters in Teaching from Loyola Marymount. After serving as a teacher and coach for many years, Brian made the jump to radio broadcasting and then to television in Brian is an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and Cubs. He enjoys swimming, biking and spending time with his wife and two daughters. Beth Fisher is the morning news anchor for Channel 13 Action News. She graduated from Pacific University with a degree in journalism and literature. She came to Las Vegas in 1999 and has twice been named best anchor in Las Vegas and earned an Emmy for her reporting. Beth enjoys hiking, meeting new people and spending time with her husband, their two children, and their lovable St. Bernard, Molly. Shawn Tempesta can be seen every weekday on The Morning Blend on Channel 13 and heard in the afternoons as a DJ at Mix 94.1 at CBS Radio. After graduating from The New England Institute of Art his work took him to New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and ultimately Las Vegas. Shawn has interviewed countless celebrities in his red carpet coverage of the Billboard Music Awards. He is an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and loves everything about living in Las Vegas. Special thanks to Sherry Swensk for 10 years of parading with us! 2014 PATRIOTIC PARADE AWARDS This year, The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade will honor more than 20 participants representing a variety of categories and specifications with parade awards. In an effort to help capture the full-scope of each parade entry, a panel of judges comprised of Summerlin community leaders will evaluate all award categories from the parade Grandstands as each unit marches by with their dazzling display. Floats will be judged on their originality, use of materials, theme and overall quality and craftsmanship. Walking groups, bands and performing groups will be evaluated for their presentation, appearance and showmanship, and overall crowd appeal. The Polly Gonzalez Spirit Award is given to the community organization whose entry and participants collectively display the best patriotic spirit, enthusiasm and creativity. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, July 9 on and will be named in the August issue of Summerlines. To help ensure your best parade experience possible, please take note of these helpful event hints: The Escort Parade begins at 8:30 a.m. at the corner of Hillpointe Drive and Hills Center Road and ends at the Trails Village Shopping Center. The main body of the parade steps-off at 9 a.m. Three Announcers Tents are located along the route (see parade map to the left). These areas feature additional entertainment elements and amplified sound for spectators enjoyment. Parking is limited the day of the parade. Carpool with friends, bike or even walk to the parade. Many spectators stake their viewing location along the route prior to the official parade start time. Be sure to arrive early to identify a great spot to view the event. Don t forget it s hot out there! To beat the heat, drink plenty of water (one cup every minutes) even if you don t feel thirsty, wear protective clothing and slather on sunscreen. The parade route is lined with grass so bring a chair, open an umbrella or lay out a blanket to enjoy the parade comfortably. Please be responsible with your children and keep them safe during the parade. Do not allow kids or kids at heart to enter the parade route and approach entries during the event. Wear red, white, and blue to celebrate America and display your patriotism. Consider bringing a few decorations to make your viewing location extra-spirited!
