3 Parade Preview The tradition of huge family fun and spirited, colorful patriotism established 19 years ago by The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade continues in Taking place Thursday, July 4 at 9 a.m. in The Trails Village of Summerlin, the Patriotic Parade will debut more than a dozen new entries and bring the total number of parade units to more than 60. Joining the line-up are five new Macy s-style giant inflatable balloons including a 30 Thomas the Train and 65 brachiosaurus; a vibrant and stirring 18 float entitled Colors of the Wind featuring Pocahontas and friends; and a full-cast of children s character mascots inspired by popular film and books. These new additions comprise an all-star cast of beloved and popular characters that appeal to the kid in all of us, said Lezlie Barnson- DeNardin, parade organizer and community relations director for The Summerlin Council. What s a parade without superstars from history, pop culture, cartoons, games, books and movies, she said. Parade favorites such as the All Star Salute to the Military, Undersea Jubilee, Spirit of 76 and Candy Land floats, as well as bands, performing groups and the iconic American Eagle giant inflatable balloon, will make return appearances this year. And, of course, the parade will feature its original entry Patriotic Peddlers where young Summerlin residents decorate their bikes and cycle the parade route kicking-off the annual event. We showcase Summerlin s culture and engage the community on a broad level by providing entertainment for kids as well as adults, said Barnson-DeNardin. We make an effort to include only the most creative and festive float ideas and, as the parade gets bigger and bigger we continue to focus on making it a true reflection of our community while honoring and celebrating our country. There is never a shortage of red, white and blue at The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade. So be sure to don your stars and stripes and join us for this Independence Day extravaganza. PARADE 101 School may be out for summer, but Parade 101 is now in session! To help ensure your best parade experience possible, please take note of these helpful event hints: The Escort Parade begins at 8:30 a.m. at the corner of Hillpointe Drive and Hills Center Road and ends at the Trails Village Shopping Center. The main body of the parade steps-off at 9 a.m. Three Announcers Tents are located along the route (see parade map to the left). These areas feature additional entertainment elements and amplified sound for spectators enjoyment. Parking is limited the day of the parade. Carpool with friends, bike or even walk to the parade. Many spectators stake their viewing location along the route prior to the official parade start time. Be sure to arrive early to identify a great spot to view the event. Don t forget it s hot out there! To beat the heat, drink plenty of water, wear protective clothing and slather on sunscreen. The parade route is lined with grass so bring a chair, open an umbrella or lay out a blanket to enjoy the parade comfortably. Please be responsible with your children and keep them safe during the parade. Do not allow kids or kids at heart to enter the parade route and approach entries during the event. Wear red, white, and blue to celebrate America and display your patriotism. Consider bringing a few decorations to make your viewing location extra-spirited! Be sure to take along this issue of FanFare, the official program of The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade, to follow the entries and take note of your parade favorites for voting in the Resident s Choice Award on www. summerlink.com.

What can you do to stay cool at the parade? Schedule hydration breaks throughout the event. You should drink about one cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes even if you don t feel thirsty. Because perspiration evaporates so quickly in Southern Nevada, we may not be aware of our water loss, so set the alarm on your phone to remind you to take a drink. Think before you drink. Water is the best source to rehydrate your body and, if you are especially active, sports beverages can help replace the salt and minerals lost during exercise. Avoid caffeinated drinks which contribute to dehydration and plan to eat a light, nutritious breakfast before the event. Stay cool by seeking shade or bringing a tent or umbrella to set-up along the course. Additionally, you can place a cold towel around your neck and behind your knees or run cold water over your wrists should you become overheated. Cool down your body should you display any of these symptoms of heat illness muscle cramping; heavy sweating; weakness; cold, pale and clammy skin; a fast but weak pulse; or nausea or vomiting. Heat stroke calls for immediate medical attention by calling 911 or going to nearest emergency room. Signs of heat stroke include a body temperature above 103 degrees; hot, red, dry or moist skin; a rapid and strong pulse and possible unconsciousness. Cool the body, but do not give the person fluids should signs of heat stroke be evident. Should you need assistance, please contact a parade official or report to an EMT station along the route. Stay cool and enjoy the Fourth of July with your family. And, as always, we re here whenever you need us.
