12 Comments Section SurveyID Comment We don't have personal transportation so we have to walk to and from school. The only issues we have encountered so far is inclimate weather and bikers not sharing the sidewalk. It would be nice if the school could help to organize carpools for students whose parents do not have personal transportation to get them to and from school during inclimate weather My child is six. The primary reason she does not walk or bike to school is her age and my morning schedule. I do not have time in the mornings to walk with her, and she is far too young to walk alone If we lived closer to the school I would allow my child to walk with me, or with other parents, but because of crime I will NEVER allow her to walk alone My Daughter had a blast walking to school but I don't let her walk because she would have to walk alone and cross two very busy streets by herself I have a son in 5th grade who bikes alone to school. This student walks with her father every morning except in bad weather We take 25 minutes to walk and I have a little one, it simply takes too long to walk and school starts too early. We are working on biking, but my kindergartner isn't quite up to biking the whole way with me biking too (I am not comfortable with her skills yet either) We walk/ride our bikes often to and from school. My girls always do so with an adult, not enough safe places for them to cross without an adult present We don't have personal transportation so we have to walk to and from school. The only issues we have encountered so far is inclimate weather and bikers not sharing the sidewalk. It would be nice if the school could help to organize carpools for students whose parents do not have personal transportation to get them to and from school during inclimate weather We walk most days and only drive to pickup because parent is usually coming from somewhere other than home. Looking forward to moving to bikes soon! my grandson is typically dropped off by his dad just in the nick of time on his way to work; then picked up by me after Boys & Girls club, but we don't go back to his home at that time, which is in the Pinckney neighborhood. He either goes with me back to my work or to my home and that is north of Lawrence...not a walking distance sort of thing. He's also a kindergartner, so it would be a while before that happens I don't feel that I have the opportunity to become connected with other parents that live in my area so I would not feel safe with my son walking with anyone else. I have classes in the morning so often times it would be inconvenient to walk I doubt anything will change regarding the distance my child has to travel... that being said, it is difficult to determine at this time what his maturity/willingness levels will be in the future concerning walking/biking appx 1 mile to school Son lives at both mom and dad's houses. He is driven to and from school when at both parents homes We don't live in a violent area, but we also don't have a lot of neighbors who go outside on a regular basis. If there was a kid-snatcher, who would notice besides the parent? I would like to see "block captains" out and about when school dismisses to keep an eye out for neighborhood kids. It would also be a great way for neighbors to get to know each other! Next to #11: with me on occasion We do ride bikes together to school when we can. When he is older I am sure this will be his preferred option, weather permitting Next to #1: 5 Page 12 of 13

13 Our daughter walks to school with a parent. We have always had concerns with the lack of safety crossing Mississippi Street on 5th, even with an adult. The crosswalk is not well marked, there is no stop sign and drivers speed through the intersection. We feel like this intersection should safer since it is the closest intersection to the school from the north side I commute, so it often times is easier to drop my child off in the car and head straight out of town The tunnel should be more welcoming and friendly. Should also be brighter; even durring the, the tunnel is very dark. Also cameras should be added facing toward the tunnel on the south side of 6th street. So anyone entering the tunnel has acknowledged the camera The tunnel should be more welcoming and friendly. Should also be brighter; even durring the, the tunnel is very dark. Also cameras should be added facing toward the tunnel on the south side of 6th street. So anyone entering the tunnel has acknowledged the camera Our concern with letting our daughter walk or bike to school is that they have to cross major streets with little to no assistance. We fear for their safety when the traffic travels at their current speed and we would never be comfortable with them on the streets- even in designated bike lanes- because of careless drivers. If there were an adult led "walking bus" or "biking bus" then we might consider it as long as the students were allowed to ride on sidewalks How is my kid supposed to get 5 PAW points if this survey is anonymous?
