This year s theme was A Walk Through Toyland. Our City Commission rode in trucks provided by Ritchey Cadillac Buick GMC while passing out candy to spectators who lined the streets. This year s Parade Grand Marshal was Ormond Beach Elementary Principal Tucker Harris. Over 90 parade entries, with more than 3,000 participants, delighted the crowd with their creative floats, vehicles and performances. The parade would not be possible without the hard work of the parade committee, local volunteers and businesses, parade entrants, and generous sponsors. A special thank you to President and Parade Committee Chairman Brian Daly for all his efforts and organization working on the Parade Committee for over 20 years. Judges found it hard to pick a winner from the spectacular group of entrants in this year s parade. Congratulations to this year s winners! Awards will be presented at the City Commission Meeting on Tuesday, January 16, Photos on following pages

6 PAGE 6 First Step Shelter Earlier this week, Mayor Bill Partington, along with other elected officials, attended a groundbreaking held on a 10-acre site at 3889 West International Speedway Blvd. for the First Step Shelter. The First Step Shelter is a come-asyou-are, low-barrier, emergency homeless shelter for single men and women. The majority of the funding will come from local governments. The mission of the First Step Shelter Program is to reduce the number of adults, within Volusia County, who are experiencing homelessness through the use of compassion, dignified and respectful engagement activities. From left: Holly Hill Mayor John Penny, Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington, South Daytona Mayor William Hall, Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry. DARE Graduation On Wednesday, December 13, a graduation was held at Riverbend Academy for thirty students who attended the DARE program. On hand to congratulate and talk to the students was Mayor Bill Partington. Also in attendance to celebrate with the graduates was City Manager Joyce Shanahan, Chief Jesse Godfrey, Captain Lisa Rosenthal, Officer Jay Brennan and Officer Marianne Durkin. D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) was launched in 1983 and its mission is to teach students good decisionmaking skills to help them lead safe and healthy lives. D.A.R.E. is a comprehensive education program for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade and addresses topics students face on a daily basis - drugs, violence, bullying, and internet safety. Congratulations D.A.R.E. graduates!
7 PAGE 7 Providence Church Christmas Concert Providence Church presented two Christmas concerts entitled A Gift of Carols at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Friday, December 8, and Sunday, December 10. The free concert was open to the public and featured the Providence Church Praise Band and Choir in a program of contemporary arrangements of traditional Christmas music. Prior to the concert, the Providence Church Bell Choir performed in the lobby. The music brought the joy of holiday season to everyone in attendance. Holiday Eco Crafts On Saturday, December 9, a group of eleven craft enthusiasts including adults and children, participated in the Environmental Discovery Center s second annual Holiday Eco Craft program. Led by volunteers Marjorie Giuffre, Terry Mercer and Tina Piejak, the group rotated through three craft stations. At one station they made nature -based bird feeders using pine cones, peanut butter and bird seed. At another, they used wooden disks cut from tree limbs to paint a tree ornament. At the last station, participants made another ornament with a pine cone. A fun and festive time was had by all! Thank you Marjorie, Terry and Tina for helping us all get into the holiday spirit!
8 PAGE 8 PARKS This week, the Leisure Services Parks staff fixed a gate lock latch for the bee hive area at the Environmental Discovery Center.
