Chief Osterkamp and his wife Cathy have been married for nearly 28 years and have a daughter, Sarah, and a son, Chris. In his spare time, Chief Osterkamp enjoys spending time with his family, boating and offshore fishing among other hobbies. Daytona Systems Relocating to Ormond Beach As part of the Economic Development Department s ongoing business retention/expansion/recruitment program, Joe Mannarino meets with businesses in the community to discuss their current level of employment and operations and ways the City can assist in their success in job creation and capital investment. Daytona Systems, currently located along Mason Avenue in Daytona Beach, is relocating the company to 21 Sunshine Boulevard in the Airport Business Park in Ormond Beach. The Ormond Beach property includes a 12,000 square foot building that was formerly owned by Mr. Mike Gardner of Atlantic Coast Aluminum Company. Daytona Systems, owed by Mr. Klaus Liedtke of Ormond Beach, is a design to build engineering firm that designs and manufactures a variety of automated equipment for the medical, pharmaceutical and food and beverage industries. The City s Economic Development Director has met with Mr. Liedtke numerous times over the past few years to discuss the Company s relocation plans. Working with the Playtex Manufacturing Company on a number of economic development initiatives, staff arranged a demonstration of the ultra high speed packaging equipment to the Playtex s plant management and engineering staff. Daytona Systems continue discussing their automated packaging equipment with Playtex. Renovations of the building at the Airport Business Park are underway and an expansion is being planned in the near future as well. Daytona Systems employs approximately 15 engineers and support staff and is expected to grow over the next few years as the company increases sales of the innovative manufacturing products. Staff will arrange a tour of the new Daytona Systems facilities when the renovations are completed.
PAGE 3 July is Parks and Recreation Month July is officially Parks and Recreation month. We would like to encourage all Ormond Beach residents to explore at least one of the many parks and recreational opportunities available to you in our great City. We have so many excellent facilities available here, and the Leisure Services Department would be happy to assist you in finding the activity, park or facility that would best suit your needs. Please call us at so we can help you enhance the quality of your life.
PAGE 4 Superb Performance by Volusia Academy of Ballet The Volusia Academy of Ballet presented Fantasy Village at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday, June 26th. The students at the school study jazz dance as well as classical ballet. The first half of the performance was a jazz dance, Jazz Fever. During this dance, the students showcased their dancing talent to contemporary compositions. The dance choreographer was Mrs. Nobuko Walls, the school s owner and instructor. The second half of the performance was a classical ballet. This original ballet was also choreographed by Mrs. Nobuko Walls, and featured the musical works of various classical composers. The precision and athleticism of the dancers from the Volusia Academy of Ballet was evident throughout their performance. All of the students showed their mastery of the dance forms. The audience gave the troupe a richly deserved standing ovation with the warmest approval during their final bows. The Fun Continues at Nova Day Camp The Nova Community Center s Summer Connection Day Camp continued this week with a wide variety of activities for the children. Arts and crafts have always been a favorite of the children. Mad Science gave a very exciting presentation on the wonders that science plays on our everyday life. The campers were fascinated by all the experiments. Volunteers were easy to find!
PAGE 5 Baseball/Softball Skills Clinic a Huge Hit! The Leisure Services Department held its first Sports Clinic of the summer this past week, the Baseball/ Softball Fundamentals Camp. The group met at Nova Field 2 Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Gerry Pitchford, Athletic Supervisor and Camp Director, has run the camp for 12 of the 18 years he has been on the job. He was assisted this week by Scott Amann, intern, Graham Parsons, volunteer in his fourth year, and Christina Polidan, volunteer in her second year. Twelve children, eight boys and four girls, participated in the camp that taught skills ranging from hitting, fielding, throwing, sliding, game situations, as well as the final day game scrimmage. Each day of teaching was based on each child s strengths and weaknesses. A great week it was, for both the coaches and the kids, with the camp ending in awards for the children. An Exciting First Week at Camp T. Rec Camp T. Rec, for special needs participants, began its first week at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center. The children thoroughly enjoyed coming each day to experience all the fun that the counselors had planned for them. Diamond Jim entertained the campers with magic and balloon art. The campers also enjoyed arts and crafts, a face painter, the YMCA pool, dancing, singing, playing sports, the playground, movies, the computer lab and the splash pad. What a great way to start off the first week!
PAGE 6 Countdown to July 4th Celebration Get ready! The countdown is on for our annual Fourth of July Celebration! Staff has been busy decorating our City with beautiful stars and stripes on the light poles surrounding the Granada Bridge and placing bunting at designated areas around the parks. Staff, along with the gracious help of our Campus Outreach volunteers, also hung banner boards and had bridge signs placed to advertise for the event. We re anticipating this year s celebration to be bigger and brighter than every before. Make plans to join your friends beginning at 6:00 p.m. for an evening of fun at all four corners of the Granada Bridge. A spectacular fireworks display will begin promptly at 9:30 p.m. over the Halifax River. MYSTERY TOUR! The Casements, along with the Ormond Beach Historical Society, offered a day rich in history and beautiful sightseeing. Fifty seniors from the Ocala area came by bus on a Mystery Tour to Ormond Beach. The Ormond Beach Historical Society arranged for the group to come to visit the area and learn about our history and see the sights around the loop area and other historic homes. The guests were greeted in The Casements parking lot and divided into two different groups. One group boarded the trolley for the historic two-hour tour, while the other group came inside The Casements to tour the home and view the twenty-minute video of the area provided by The Historic Society. A walking tour under the Granada Bridge and over to the Cupola was next for the group before meeting back together for lunch at LuLu s. In the early afternoon the groups switched places, and the tours started over again! It was great to have a group so interested in the history of our area! We enjoyed working with The Ormond Beach Historical Society, and we will continue to assist them with larger groups when visiting the area.
PAGE 7 Summer Fun It s always a great day at camp when we see so many smiles. That s the way it s been at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center as we finish up week three of our Summer Connection Day camp. The kids went to the movies this week, had a great time at the Orlando Science Center, and were treated to a play put on by the Youth Development Council. In addition, they enjoyed playing basketball and crazy kickball. The kids took some time out to brush up on their classroom skills reading and spending some time on the computer with our wonderful tutoring staff. We wish everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July, and look forward to our campers returning on July 6 th for more fun! Making a Splash The summertime heat is on, and what better way to cool off than to spend some time at the splash pad at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center! The splash pad is open from 10 a.m. until dusk every day. There are two very important rules regarding the splash pad: YOU MUST BE SAFE, and YOU MUST HAVE FUN!
PAGE 8 Enviro Camp 2010 The Casements staff is eagerly awaiting the first day of Enviro Camp! This year over 100 children will visit The Casements and become an Enviro camper! The month of July is packed with fun and educational hands on projects designed to inspire the children to become stewards of the environment. We are delighted to have many visiting guests to share their talents and work with the children. The 2010 Enviro Camp guests will include: The Pioneer Settlement of Barberville Daytona State College History Club The Ormond Beach Garden Club Winters Nursery The Seaside Herb Society Wayne s Solar Dan Smith, Local fisherman and Hometown News Contributor Solar Fit Volusia County Extension University of Florida Extension City of Ormond Beach s Environmental Specialist We also appreciate our friends at Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens that will assist with camp each week on a nature walk throughout the gardens. Traffic Signal Mast Arm Granada Blvd. & Beach Street All traffic signal mast arms are in the process of being inspected by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). The FDOT recently inspected the mast arm at SR40 and Beach Street and determined that the mast arm at the southwest corner of the intersection was in critical shape due to corrosion. Due to safety concerns with keeping the mast arm in place, especially during the busy holiday weekend, FDOT has decided to remove the mast arm. A temporary signal will be installed for southbound signal indications until the permanent mast arm can be constructed. This temporary signal could be in place for 4-5 months. No traffic delays are anticipated with this conversion and during the period of operation of the temporary signal.
