Visitors were entertained by the soothing sounds of Five O Clock Charley while enjoying the variety of booths in City Hall plaza. The booths and exhibits offered great information and giveaways, and visitors were able to purchase items from the farmers market vendors. The Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona presented to the students in the Commission Chambers on the oceans and sea life past and present. The Ormond Beach Library sang with the students and had an Earth Day craft for them to create using repurposed magazines. The students ate lunch in Cassen Park across from City Hall and visited all of the booths collecting information and goodies. 4 P A G E 4 PAL s Youth Directors Program Two of Ormond Beach PAL s Youth Directors, Tiara Glenn and Jordan Glenn, along with their PAL Advisor Belinda Legut, attended the three day Youth Advisory Council (YAC) training with Florida PAL at Disney s Coronado Springs Resort and Conference Center. The YDC leaders were required to interview motivational speakers and decide whether to invite them back to speak at the YDC Conference at Disney in July. Jordan Glenn was one of nine youth chosen to advance and serve on the Youth Conference Committee (YCC)! This requires planning a Conference for over two hundred fifty youth from Florida, New Jersey, and Georgia. We are proud of the accomplishments of Ormond Beach PAL s YDC members! 5 P A G E 5 Casements Guild Luncheon On Wednesday, April 26, the Department of Leisure Services honored an unforgettable volunteer group. At 11:15 a.m., sixty attendees gathered in The Casements atrium and sunporch for The Casements Guild s 38th Annual Appreciation Luncheon. After the Guild held their penultimate meeting of the fiscal year, the celebration commenced with a welcome from Leisure Services Director Robert Carolin and remarks from Mayor Bill Partington. Amber s Jewel Catering once again provided the complimentary lunch, and The Casements thanked them with an award. Light purple and springtime green accents complemented this year s forget-me-not floral theme. Guild members received flower seed packets in addition to their yearly volunteer appreciation pins. As guests finished their meal, President Vic Liviccori thanked both the devoted docents and City staff for their tireless efforts. Siobhan Daly, Casements Cultural Center Coordinator, presented the second Elsa Wiedemann award to Guild member Robert Akam who has devoted countless hours to the organization since As the City s largest and most effective non-profit volunteer assembly, the Casements Guild aims to preserve history, provide cultural enrichment, and educate the public. Once again, The Casements staff and City of Ormond Beach thank the group for another successful year!

6 P A G E 6 Popovich Comedy Pet Theater The Popovich Comedy Pet Theater performed at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Friday, April 21. Gregory Popovich, the creator and principal performer of Comedy Pet Theater, is a world renowned animal trainer and former clown from the Moscow Circus. The show stars dogs and cats that were rescued from animal shelters. Popovich and his animals performed amazing and comical tricks to the delight of the children and adults in the audience. Parks Update The Leisure Services Parks staff replaced a soap dispenser in the restrooms at Central Park I. At the Joyce Ebbets Pier, sprinklers were repaired and litter was cleared from the water. Engraved bench slats were installed on a memorial bench at the Bailey Riverbridge Pier. Sharp points were remedied at Andy Romano Beachfront Park and a rail was repaired at the Nova Skate Park. As usual, Citywide safety inspections were performed of all parks and equipment and weekly inspections were done of parks facilities for reservations. All park reservations were posted at various facilities.

7 P A G E 7 Celtic Festival 2017 Stays Golden Nearly ten thousand lucky lads and lasses attended Ormond MainStreet s seventh annual Celtic Festival last weekend! On April 22 and 23, Rockefeller Gardens, The Casements North Lawn, and Fortunato Park transformed into an Irish countryside. Saturday and Sunday saw plenty of kilts, jigs, and pints as guests celebrated the United Kingdom s rich history and culture. Festivities included traditional garb, various clan booths, local vendors, bagpipe players, sheep herding, and Highland Games. Fish and chips, haggis, scones, and a beer garden were also on the menu. Live music was performed on two stages, and Irish folk singer Brendan Nolan headlined this year s festival. Ormond MainStreet is a non-profit volunteer-based organization. 8 P A G E 8 Big Band America Big Band America performed at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Sunday, April 23. The concert, entitled A Musical Tour of the USA, included a medley from the Broadway musical The Phantom of the Opera and the national march of the USA Stars and Stripes Forever. Band leader Jim Miller invited singer Myles Savage to perform as a guest artist. Mr. Savage performed several tunes during the show. The concert was a great time for all big band jazz fans in the audience MADD Awards On Friday April 21, 2017, Officer Justin Pereira and Sergeant Bill Warmington were honored to attend the 2016 MADD awards banquet in Jacksonville, Florida. Officer Pereira (far left) was awarded the 2016 MADD Rookie Award of Excellence, while Sergeant Warmington (far right) was awarded the 2016 MADD Outstanding DUI Enforcement Award. Sergeant Warmington and Officer Pereira were accompanied to the awards ceremony by Lieutenant DW Smith (center). Congratulations to Sergeant Warmington and Officer Pereira for this well-deserved recognition!
