In December 2012, Bob was appointed Fire Chief after serving as Acting Fire Chief for more than a year following the resignation of the former Fire Chief. Bob has over 16 years experience in the fire service and has been with Ormond Beach since 1997 when he was hired as a Firefighter. He was subsequently promoted to Driver Engineer, Lieutenant, Captain, Acting Division Chief, and Battalion Commander. Bob has lived in Ormond Beach his entire life and completed his Bachelor s Degree in Supervision and Management at Daytona State College in He has numerous training and education certifications and is a member of the Volusia County Fire Chiefs Association, Florida Fire Chiefs Association, and the International Fire Chiefs Association. The parade was a huge success with over 100 parade entries, which consisted of over 2,500 people participating. The Parade Winners received their awards at the January 15th City Commission meeting. 3 PAGE 3 A Little Bit of Italy We are pleased to welcome Executive Chef Mary Maggio back to The Casements where she encourages aspiring cooks with her love of cooking and culinary skills. Thursday, January 10th, was the first in a series of cooking classes Mary teaches in the kitchen at The Casements. Thursday s class was a culinary trip to the Mediterranean from Florence to Venice, Sicily and Rome with no passport required! A variety of dishes influenced by these major cities of Italy were explored including Bistecca alla Fiorentina (charbroiled marinated steak), Zuppa di Pesce (a medley of fresh seafood in a light tomato fennel broth), Insalata di Mare (fresh, light seafood salad) and Traditional Scaloppini (chicken with mushrooms, wine, capers and lemon). Mary has an outgoing dynamic personality and has received a host of accolades for her culinary skills. Her witty sense of humor and charm add spice to every class. That s why her first class was a huge success, and we re sure her upcoming three-hour classes will be the same. 4 PAGE 4 Anything Goes The Ormond Beach Senior Theatre Workshop performed the classic Cole Porter musical, Anything Goes! at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Friday, January 11 th, Saturday, January 12 st, and Sunday, January 13 th. Under the direction of Mrs. Cyndi Simmons, the cast of local senior actors, singers, and dancers performed one of the best loved Broadway Musicals of all times. The wonderful songs of the Cole Porter score and the lighthearted story of an absurd love triangle aboard a cruise ship came to life on the stage. Anything Goes was a showcase for the many talented performers in our community. The audience showed its appreciation with warm rounds of applause throughout the performance. The Fabulous Hubcaps Allengang Entertainment is proud to present The Fabulous Hubcaps. The Fabulous Hubcaps will bring their high energy Doo Wop, Oldies, and Classic Rock-n-Roll show to the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Friday, January 25th at 7:30 p.m. The Fabulous Hubcaps is one of the nation s most sought after 50 s and 60 s Doo Wop groups. This dazzling seven piece show band has been wowing audiences all over the United States for nearly 40 years. The Fabulous Hubcaps amazing live shows are legendary. They have been inducted into the Southern Legends Entertainment and Performing Arts Hall of Fame. Tickets are on sale now at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center Box Office. Reserved VIP tickets (seating in the first five rows) are $40. Tickets for general reserved seating are $35 and $30. The Box Office is located at 399 N. 5 PAGE 5 Play Unplugged! Nova Community Center begins a new program for children ages 4-14 years of age. Play Unplugged is a structured open play time for the children. Each week activities will be planned utilizing different games and equipment. The first week we conducted scooter races and made paper bag scrapbooks. The children will be challenged to construct an obstacle course, be able to play board games, and take part in sports games in the upcoming weeks. For more information, call the Nova Community Center at Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School The City of Ormond Beach Leisure Services Department is once again hosting the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School. Hunter Wendelstedt, Harry s son, is running the school along with several of his major league umpires that he works with throughout the season. Currently, there are approximately 175 participants working hard in hopes of securing a minor league position in the near future. The school is also currently putting on their annual free local clinics on Saturdays for 3 weeks to locals.

6 PAGE 6 Gymnastics Center Gymnastics classes continue to hold a great amount of interest and huge enthusiasm with the various age groups and talents. Here, Coach George instructs a pre-school student doing a front support on the even bars and working on his skills by doing an inverted hang on the parallel bars. Regular classes have resumed and preparations are being made for their first gymnastics meet. Everyone s efforts are top notch and the benefits and rewards will truly shine! The girls gymnastics teams are preparing for their first competition next week in Vero Beach and the cheer team is practicing for its upcoming competition in Tampa. 7 PAGE 7 Walking with the Manager On Friday, February 1, at 8:00 a.m., Walking with the Manager" will begin at Cassen Park (southwest corner of the Granada Bridge and S. Beach St.). Please meet near the entrance to the Park. From Cassen Park, the walk will go to Granada Blvd., and proceed west toward Orchard St., with a walk along Thompson Creek Road, and then will return to Cassen Park. The entire walk is approximately 2 miles. Ric Goss, Planning Director, will be the City Manager s guest walker. Mr. Goss will provide the group with information about downtown improvements as well as answer questions from the group. Citizens are invited to join the City Manager and the Planning Director for a walk, ask questions, share comments and offer suggestions. Please put on your walking shoes and join us. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday City Hall and all non-emergency facilities will be closed on Monday, January 21, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, January 22.
