5 NORTH CAROLINA PLAYER NOTES Bridgette Andrzejewski, Junior, Forward, Lutherville, Md.: Dorrance on Bridgette: Bridgette is having a fine soccer career at the University of North Carolina. She was an All-America as a freshman. She was our leading scorer as a sophomore. She is extraordinarily athletic. She possesses world class agility. She s got good speed and quickness. She has a good skill set. If she decides to commit herself to game she can write her ticket. Her key to becoming successful at the higher levels, because she d like to have an invitation to the U23 National Team, will be based on her consistent ability to create goals and finish them, which will entirely be based on her time with the ball in the summer. She can play midfield but she will spend 80 percent of her time up top for us. Junior Year (2018): Has started at right wing in 23 of the 25 games the season, playing 1,427 minutes, including season-high 79 minutes versus UCLA ranks seventh on team in minutes played, fourth among non-defenders and first among forwards tied for fourth on team with 14 points tied for third on the team in goals with five scored insurance goal in 2-0 win over Ohio State in 58th minute assisted on Zoe Redei s game-winning goal versus Marquette in 26th minute scored her second goal of season in 22nd minute of 3-0 win over Pitt added her third goal of season, opening scoring in 7-1 win at Syracuse assisted on Alessia Russo s game-winning goal versus Virginia Tech assisted on Sydney Spruill s insurance goal in win over Miami scored a pair of goals in NCAA Tournament first round win over Howard wracked up fourth assist of year in NCAA win over Virginia Tech. Sophomore Year (2017): Named to the preseason Hermann Trophy Watch List also tapped for preseason All-ACC Team earned honors on third-team All-ACC squad at end of regular season played in all 22 games last season, starting 20 times and playing 1,543 minutes, including a season-high 110 minutes versus both Louisville and Notre Dame played at forward in first 13 games of season before moving into starting role at right midfield after Emily Fox tore her ACL at Boston College moved back to starting forward role against Florida State in ACC Tournament quarterfinals and played there the rest of season had eight goals and seven assists for 23 points ranked second on the team in assists with seven and led the squad in points with 23 was second on the squad in goals with eight scored a pair of game-winning goals scored game-winning goal in 1-0 NCAA Tournament second round win over Colorado also scored in NCAA Tournament third round game against Princeton assisted on first goal in ACC Tournament quarterfinals against Florida State and set up winning goal versus Seminoles when she was taken down in the penalty area leading to a Taylor Otto penalty kick goal tallied the latest game-tying goal in UNC women s soccer history, scoring with just 15 seconds in left in regulation on a header off a Jessie Scarpa corner kick in UNC s 1-1 tie with Notre Dame on October 26 scored a pair of goals in 4-1 win at Boston College, including her first game-winning goal of the season when she tallied in the ninth minute of game assisted on game-winning goals by Alessia Russo versus South Florida, Syracuse and Wake Forest assisted on both goals in 2-1 win at Virginia assisted on an insurance tally versus Auburn scored goals against UNCW, Miami and Virginia Tech which provided separation for the Tar Heels. Miah Araba, Sophomore, Midfielder, Chapel Hill, N.C.: Dorrance on Miah: Miah was a kid I d seen for the previous three years at Carrboro High School and I loved watching her play in high school. She has a very powerful strike with her left foot from distance which she demonstrated that her freshman year. In terms of points per minute she was our leader. She did not get on the field much but when she was on the field she scored a goal and that made all the difference. Right now, her main contribution to our roster is on the academic side. She was a valedictorian at Carrboro High School. Her academic status continues to impress. All of us, certainly myself, want her to be more of a leader. I want her to work her way on to the travel roster. As far as a young woman of character who takes her academics very seriously but is also going to contribute for us in practice, she is an absolute jewel and I love having her. Sophomore Year (2018): Saw first action of year, playing 10 minutes versus Marquette also saw two minutes of action versus Pitt and seven minutes versus Louisville. Freshman Year (2017): Played in four games last season, totaling 33 minutes scored a spectacular goal in the 89th minute of 5-0 win over Auburn to record her first career tally named to ACC Academic Honor Roll. Julia Ashley, Senior, Defender, Verona, N.J.: Dorrance on Julia: Julia is a coach s dream. She came in as a hard-working player and all she did was work even harder. She really wants to be the best. She s had opportunities now at the U23 level and I am very proud of her for that because her partner in the defense when she was growing up was a kid who was recruited by Stanford that for most of Julia s life that kid was considered a much better player. But Julia has worked herself to death and now Julia is on the U23 Team and this other kid is not. That s indicative of how hard Julia works. She s a fabulous leader. She s not afraid to hold people accountable which is very rare in women s athletics. Even the great players are reluctant to hold teammates responsible but I really respect Julia s strength as well as her leadership qualities, her heart, her hard-working nature and also her aerobic capacity. Her aerobic capacity is amongst the best in history at the University of North Carolina. I think she turned down a track scholarship at Duke to come here to play soccer for us and you can see the track star in her because she is absolutely relentless and so hard-working on the field. She s an absolute joy and I am so glad we have her for another season. Dorian Bailey, Senior, Midfielder, Mission, Kan.: Dorrance on Dorian: Dorian Bailey along with Taylor Otto and Alessia Russo is up there as a potential team MVP. She made a huge jump this past season. Coming into our program she hadn t made a jump quality wise but what she did her freshman year was remarkable but then she got hurt. Before the Louisville game in her freshman year when she got hurt we were undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the country. She was why were we so good. Then she got hurt and our season basically just went downhill. In 2016, she did not have a great year. In fact, in 2016 she was starting for me early in the year and Annie Kingman put her on the bench. This past year she started out good but not great and she just got better and better and better while coming off the bench. She was essentially a starter who came off the bench because of the substitution rules in the first half. Dorian has the athletic and human character to embrace a role like that. After Emily Fox got hurt Dorian went into the starting lineup and she ended up with a phenomenal junior year to her credit. The three players who I would rank as the top three players on the team are Alessia Russo at forward, Dorian Bailey in midfield and Taylor Otto on defense. I think the team may have voted Alessia as the MVP last year but I would still put the three of them in the same category as the best players on the team. Dorian s qualities are that she is very good technically and very good tactically. Her issue at first in 2016 was certainly defensive presence. She has corrected a lot of that and it is still a concern but if she addresses that she could have just a wonderful senior year for us as one of our best players. Senior Year (2018): Member of U.S. U23 National Team named to Top Drawer Soccer preseason second-team Best XI squad third-team All-ACC selection has started all 25 games of the season in the midfield, playing 1,786 minutes so far, including a season-high 101 minutes versus UCLA has played the fifth most minutes on any player on the team and the second most amongst non-defenders recorded a pair of assists in win over Pitt, assisting on Alessia Russo s gamewinning goal in the 17th minute and Bridgette Andrzejewski s goal in the 22nd minute scored her first goal of the season against Louisville while adding the primary assist on Alessia Russo s game-winning goal against the Cardinals scored the insurance goal versus Virginia Tech in 81st minute in 2-0 win over Hokies in regular season added her third goal of the season against Virginia Tech in ACC Tournament quarterfinals, scoring with 1:20 to play to provide separation in 2-0 win scored her fourth goal of the season and her third against Virginia Tech, tallying in 56th minute of NCAA third round win over Hokies scored her fifth goal of the campaign in NCAA quarterfinal game against UCLA tied for third on the Tar Heel team in goals with five and is seventh on the squad in points with 13 named to Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week on October 1 after win over Louisville.
