6 TAR HEELS STUGGLE VERSUS USC: In the second game on UNC s long West Coast road trip (September 11 and 13), the Tar Heels found themselves in an unusual position. USC, one of the hottest teams in the country, won for the fifth straight time, and it was a well deserved victory as statistically the Trojans did dominate the game. Rarely are the Tar Heels both outshot in a game (17-10) and outcornered (7-3) Conversely, the incredible tradition of Carolina women s soccer shows that very few times the Tar Heels have ever been on the end of a 3-0 loss. The game marked only the fourth time since 1985 that Carolina had lost a game by more than a single goal. The three goals were the most the Tar Heels had surrendered in a game in five years (4-3 loss to Texas A&M in 2011) and the three-goal margin of defeat was the first since 2010 (4-1 loss to Notre Dame). And, even more remarkably, the Tar Heels lost by as many as three goals for only the second time since the 1980 season (Notre Dame in 2010 and USC in 2016). It was only the seventh loss in Carolina history by a margin of three or more goals. Five of those seven losses by three or more goals in the program s history came in its first two varsity seasons in 1979 and PERSONNEL LOSSES-COLOR THE TAR HEELS YOUNG IN 2016: Carolina lost five of 11 starters off last year s team to graduation (forward Alexa Newfield, goalkeeper Bryane Heaberlin, midfielder Katie Bowen, forward Summer Green, defender Paige Nielsen) and three likely starters (midfielder Joanna Boyles, defender Taylor Otto, forward Jessie Scarpa) are red-shirting in 2016 for National Team duties and injury reasons. Kate Morris, another promising midfield option for the Tar Heels, is redshirting this year. Both Morris and Boyles suffered ACL injuries during the school year. They will return as redshirt sophomore and redshirt senior midfielders, respectively, in FIVE SENIOR STARTERS IN 2016: While Carolina s bench is predominantly a youthful group of players, four UNC seniors are members of the starting unit. This group of seniors, who played their final home regular-season game at Fetzer Field on October 27 versus Florida State, included midfielders Cameron Castleberry and Darcy McFarlane, defender Hanna Gardner and goalkeeper Lindsey Harris. UNC senior reserves include forwards Sarah Ashley Firstenberg and Jenny Chiu. OPENING WEEKEND PROVIDES SOME ANSWERS: Carolina opened the season in the annual Carolina Nike Classic at Fetzer Field on August 19 and 21. The youthful Tar Heels posted a pair of clean sheets, beating UCF 2-0 on Friday and Charlotte 3-0 on Sunday. Four Tar Heels will be red-shirted this year and were not in the opening weekend roster sheets. Dorrance played 19 players in the win over the Knights and 20 players in the victory over Charlotte. He used two fairly different starting lineups. Against the Knights, Ru Mucherera started on defense and Darcy McFarlane, Cameron Castleberry and Dorian Bailey started in the midfield. That quartet was replaced on Sunday by Maya Worth in the defense and Bridgette Andrzejewski, Annie Kingman and Abby Elinsky in the midfield. SUMMING UP THE TWO WINS ON OPENING WEEKEND: Carolina opened the season with a 2-0 win over UCF and a 3-0 win over Charlotte at the Carolina Nike Classic on August 19 and 21. The Tar Heel defense was exemplary, pitching two clean sheets and limiting its two opponents to 14 shots. Lindsey Harris went the whole way in goal in both games for the Tar Heels, recording two solo shutouts. Carolina got a pair of goals early and midway through the second half in its win over UCF with Sarah Ashley Firstenberg scoring off an assist by Maya Worth in the 53rd minute and Alex Kimball heading home a corner kick by Annie Kingman in the 64th minute. In the win over Charlotte, Hanna Gardner headed home an Annie Kingman cross in the seventh minute for the gamewinner.
