The Terps (11-6 overall and 3-3 in the ACC) are playing for a chance to finish as high as No. 2 in the conference behind only North Carolina, which clinched the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament with a 3-2 win at Wake Forest on Wednesday night. The Tar Heels are overall and in the ACC. A Maryland win over North Carolina on Friday, coupled with a Florida State loss or tie to Virginia on Saturday would give the Terps second place in the ACC. That would equal the Terps best finish in the league, equalling their second place finish in 1999, which came in Shannon Higgins-Cirovski s first year as the Terps head coach. That year the Terps went overall and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. A Maryland win over North Carolina, along with a win by Florida State on Saturday would give the Terps a third place finish behind the Tar Heels and Seminoles. Maryland would be tied with Clemson at 4-3, but would get the advantage due to the 3-2 victory over the Tigers on Oct. 20. A tie between the Terps and Tar Heels would give Maryland a record. At that point they could finish anywhere from fourth through sixth, as the Terps lose tiebreakers to Florida State, Wake Forest and NC State should they all tie at A Maryland loss at North Carolina would mean the Terps would be 3-4 in the ACC and finish either fifth or sixth as North Carolina, Florida State, Clemson and NC State would all have.500 or better records in the league. For the Terps to finish fifth with a loss at UNC, Wake Forest would have to lose or tie against Duke on Saturday. Should Maryland lose and Wake Forest win against Duke, the Terps would finish sixth in the league Record: (3-3-0 ACC) 2002 Rankings:...NSCAA (23rd), S. For the sixth time this Friday night, Maryland head coach and 2002 Hall of Fame inductee Shannon Higgins-Cirovski goes head-to-head with her college coach Anson Dorrance, North Carolina s legendary mentor. Higgins-Cirovski was a four-year star for the Tar Heels from , when North Carolina compiled an astonishing record on its way to four consecutive national championships. Higgins-Cirovski was also named national Player of the Year by Soccer America in 1988 and Higgins-Cirovski s jersey, No. 3, is one of nine numbers retired at North Carolina. Earlier this season, Dorrance was the man who introduced Higgins-Cirovski when she was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Oneonta, N.Y., on Oct. 14, Dorrance listed off Shannon s many accomplishments mixing in some humor with seriousness in his touching introduction. As a coach, she has faced her alma mater twice as the coach of George Washington. In 1993, the Tar Heels topped the Colonials, 4-0 and in 1994, UNC defeated George Washington, 2-0. At Maryland, Higgins-Cirovski and the Terps fell to North Carolina, 3-0 on Oct. 24, 1999 in College Park, 6-0 at Fetzer Field on Oct. 29, 2000 and 3-1 last season at Ludwig Field on Oct. 5, Friday s game will be just the second time Higgins-Cirovski coached against North Carolina in Chapel Hill following the 2000 game. The 1999 ACC Tournament marked the first time Higgins-Cirovski coached a collegiate game at Fetzer Field, where she played many memorable games. The Terps defeated Duke in the first round but fell to Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament. Dorrance speaks very highly of Higgins-Cirovski, as a player and a coach. Of all the players I have coached, no one is more suited to be a coach, said Dorrance. She is a brilliant field organizer and tactical genius. The cliché coach on the field certainly always applied to her during her playing career. Every team she presents will be well-organized and difficult to play. North Carolina includes two games in its record against Maryland from 1986 when the Terps fielded a club squad, making their mark 20-0 against the Terps. Last season, Before the largest crowd (2,728) since a record of 4,380 came out on Oct. 10, 1997, the Maryland women s soccer team recorded its firstever goal against North Carolina. Courtney Beirne scored in the 23rd minute against the No. 1 Tar Heels, as Maryland fell, 3-1. The Terps had been outscored 77-0, after UNC took a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute of Friday s game, dating back to the first game in 1987, spanning 18 games. Beirne tipped in a pass from Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) to tie the game 1-1 at 22:20. Maryland s offense has continued its high-scoring pace this season with 40 goals in 17 matches for a 2.35 goals per game average. That total is 16 more than the entire season total for all of 2001, when the Terps tallied 24 goals in 19 games (1.26 per game). Maryland surpassed that 24-goal mark in the ninth game of this season in the 3-2 win over Duke on Sept. 27. The Terps 40 goals this season are the most since Shannon Higgins-Cirovski took over as coach and the most since 1998 when they scored 55. Maryland has seven players with 10 or more points after having just two last season. All-Time Series North Carolina leads The Last Five Meetings 10/5/01 North Carolina 3, Maryland 1 10/29/00 North Carolina 6, Maryland 0 10/24/99 North Carolina 3, Maryland 0 10/23/98 North Carolina 2, Maryland 0 11/9/97 North Carolina 4, Maryland 0 Home team in bold The attack has been led by Audra Poulin (Silver Spring, Md.), Ali Andrzejewski (Lutherville, Md.) and Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J.). Poulin had been on a torrid stretch in mid-october, scoring four goals in a three-game span. She leads the team with a career-high eight goals and tops the Terps in points with 19. She posted her first multi-goal game against George Mason on Oct. 16, with two goals in the first 16 minutes. Poulin came into the season with just three goals in her first two seasons. Poulin was named to the Soccer America and Soccer Buzz Teams of the Week for her performances last week. The freshman sensation, Andrzejewski is second on the club with 18 points after scoring her team-high tying eighth goal at James Madison last Monday night. Ludwig was the difference in the Terps win at Clemson on Oct. 20, as she assisted the game-winning goal and scored the game-tying goal, both on great individual efforts. She now has 16 points to stand third on the team in scoring with six goals and four assists, all of which are career highs. For Poulin and Ludwig, the goal totals are more than each player had scored in all of last season. Ludwig had two goals in 2001, although she did play most of the year on defense and Poulin had three goals last season -- the first three of her career. The assists have also been coming at a fast rate with all of the goals. Redshirt Freshman Kimmy Francis (Richboro, Pa.) had a career-high four points as she added to her team-high assist total of eight with a pair against James Madison on Oct. 28. Francis also notched her second goal of the season on a free kick and is fourth on the team in scoring with 12 points. She also scored her first collegiate goal vs. George Washington. Francis eight assists are one short of tying the school record for for helpers by a freshman when Emmy Harbo had nine assists in Junior Jenny Biscoe has 10 points after scoring her second goal of the year at James Madison. She has six assists to rank second on the team to Francis. Earlier this season, she tied a school-record with a three-assist performance at Rutgers on Sept. 6. Biscoe scored her first goal of the season notching the game-winner at Clemson (10/20). Defender/midfielder Mallory Mahar (Medina, Ohio) has been a force on the offensive end all season with her headers in the box. All four of her goals including the first in the game at James Madison have come on headers off set pieces. She converted a corner kick from Francis for the first goal vs. the Dukes. Overall, she has 10 points on the four goals and two assists. Senior Kim King (Media, Pa.) has been an important cog off the bench as she has three goals and two assists for eight points this season. She notched the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the win over Duke, scoring in the 66th minute and the game-winner in the 43rd minute against Virginia on Oct. 11. Freshman Simone Dekker (Ringwood, N.J.) has been a great addition, as the speedy forward has played in all 17 games and posted four goals and three assists for 11 points. Senior Dana Jarzyniecki (Rochester, N.Y.) continues to provide stability in the midfield in her fourth year. She has played in all 77 games since she came in College Park in 1999 and ranks tied for 11th in career assists with 11. Junior goalkeeper Kristen Barnhill (Charlottesville, Va.) has been strong in the net since she has been given the starting role for the last five games (she did come off the bench after seven minutes against Florida State to allow for senior Lynn Scharf to start). She has a 0.89 goals against average, playing in nine matches overall in 2002, stopping 83 percent of the shots she has faced. She posted a pair of shutouts over Virginia and George Mason in her first two collegiate starts. Those shutouts marked the first time in eight years that a Maryland keeper had shutouts in her first two starts. In September of 1995, freshman Kassie Knecht shut out William & Mary and Old Dominion in back-to -back games making three saves in each of her first two college starts. Barnhill posted a career-high seven saves in the big ACC win at Clemson on Oct. 20. She came up big in her first two major playing opportunities this season. First, she showed her worth when she came on in the 33rd minute against Duke, when Wilner was injured, and made five saves in preserving the Terps critical ACC win for her first collegiate victory. On Oct. 11, Barnhill drew her first start after Wilner was issued a red card at Penn State and was forced to sit out the Virginia, and Barnhill made three saves in posting her first solo shutout. She followed that up with two saves vs. the Patriots.

3 The Terps defense was strong as well with freshman goalkeeper Mariel Wilner (Owings Mills, Md.) in the net for the first 12 starts of the season. Wilner has a 1.65 goals against average and a.638 save percentage in her first collegiate season. Wilner picked up her first collegiate solo shutout with five saves against William & Mary. Aiding the keepers on the backline is junior All-ACC selection Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.) along with junior Katie Kruse (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), sophomore Lindsay Niehaus (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshmen Mallory Mahar (Medina, Ohio) and Kristin McHugh (Gaithersburg, Md.). Mahar, who has also moved up to midfield in the last few games, has been a force on set pieces recording three goals all on headers off corner kicks this season including the game-winner vs. William & Mary. Jennifer Lovecchio (Vineland, N.J.) got back into action against Mason, playing 27 minutes after sitting out two games with a mild concussion. The ranks of the National Soccer Hall of Fame formally grew by three with induction ceremonies on Monday, October 14. Maryland head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski, a midfielder for the United States team which won the first women's world championships as well as four University of North Carolina NCAA championship teams was joined by Adolph Bachmeier, a defender and defensive midfielder from the 1950s and 1960s; Vladislav (Bogie) Bogicevic, a star midfielder for the North American Soccer League Cosmos from as the class of Higgins-Cirovski, who starred collegiately at the University of North Carolina is just the third women to enter the Hall as a player (joining April Heinrichs and Carin Jennings-Gabarra) and is the youngest person to enter the hall at just 34 years old. This really puts what being a pioneer is, into perspective, said Higgins-Cirovski. It is truly an amazing honor, obviously as you move past your playing days and reflect on them, they seem to move further away. It is so nice of the committee to recognize my accomplishments. To think of all of the players that I watched, such as Bogicevic and other Hall of Famers... to be joining them is such an honor. Higgins-Cirovski had a star-studded career at North Carolina. She helped the Tar Heels to four national championships (1986, 87, 88, and 89), scoring the game-winning goal in the final three titles. She posted an record as a collegian and was named a two-time first team All-American in 1988 and 89. She was named national Player of the Year by Soccer America in 1988 and named consensus national player of the year in At the conclusion of her career at UNC, the playmaking midfielder had tallied 39 goals and 51 assists for 129 points in 94 matches. She was the second-ever female recipient of the prestigious Hermann Trophy Award as the nation s top Division I women s soccer player in 1989 and also captured the Honda Award as the top female athlete in the nation after that season. She was honored with the first-ever Mary Garber Award given to the ACC s top female athlete. She is one of nine women s soccer players to have her number (No. 3) retired at North Carolina. She graduated from Chapel Hill in Higgins-Cirovski played for the United States national team from , as she helped the squad to the 1991 Women s World Cup title in China. Her free kick set up the first goal in the 2-1 championship victory over Norway in the 91 final. She retired from international play with 51 caps, second most of any player at that time. She was named to Soccer America s Team of the Century, as one of the top 11 players to have impacted women s soccer in the 20th century. She was also honored as one of the ACC s best players at the league s celebration in Higgins-Cirovski entered the coaching ranks in 1991 at George Washington University and led the Colonials for seven seasons. She led them to their only NCAA Tournament bid in She was named Atlantic-10 Coach of the Year in After coaching the United States U-18 team for a season, Higgins-Cirovski was hired as Maryland s women s head coach on Jan. 13, She joined her husband, Sasho, on the Maryland athletic staff, who has been the men s soccer coach since Each of the Terps defeats this season has come to a team that has been ranked in the NSCAA s Top 25 this season and five are ranked in this week s poll. Maryland, which is aiming to return to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in eight years faces one of the most difficult schedules in the nation. The Terps six losses have come to this week s No. 9 Connecticut (3-1 on Sept. 1), No. 10 Penn State (1-0 on Oct. 8), No. 15 Florida State (1-0 on Oct. 25), No. 17 Notre Dame (5-2 on Sept. 15) and No. 25 Wake Forest (3-1 on Sept. 20). NC State, which handed the Terps, their other loss was No. 23 two weeks ago. Three Terps are moving up the Maryland career assist chart. Lindsay Givens is tied for seventh all-time with 13 assists after picking up her second of the 2002 season on a corner kick that led to Ali Andrzejewski s goal vs. George Mason. Dana Jarzyniecki (Rochester, N.Y.) has 11 in her career to stand tied for 11th all-time at Maryland. She added her 11th assist against George Washington on Sept Keri Sarver (95-98) Emmy Harbo (95-98) Leslie Kerhin (92-94) Kelly Amonte (92-95) M. Deville (94-97) 13 Lindsay Givens (99-)13 8. T. Jarzyniecki (99-) 11 Jenny Biscoe (00-) 11 With her fast start this season Jenny Biscoe now has 11 career assists and is closing in on the top 10. Biscoe tied the school record for assists in a game with three at Rutgers. Jarzyniecki set the record originally vs. Howard on Oct. 11, Biscoe picked up her sixth assist in the win over George Mason. Three Terp defenders are still out with major injuries. Senior Valerie Lawrence is redshirting the 2002 season as she continues to recover from a torn ACL in her left knee. Junior captain Carly Viher is also out for the season after tearing the ACL in her left knee for the second time in just over a year on Sept. 17 in practice. She underwent surgery on Friday, Sept. 27. Junior Sally Harrison, who was granted a redshirt year in 2001 after playing just four games, will finish her college Rk. Team Record Pts. 4 career this season after suffering a dislocated knee cap suffered in an intrasquad scrimmage on Sept. 16, She did play the first seven minutes against Florida State on Senior Night, but is not expected to play again this season. Sophomore Melissa Anderson (Annapolis, Md.) will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a concussion at Clemson. She is undergoing further oberservation and will not suit up again this season. Sophomore Jennifer Lovecchio sat out the Penn State and Virginia games with a mild concussion. But played 27 minutes vs. George Mason and has played in three of the last four matches. Maryland will have a chance to pick up its biggest win on program history on Friday night as they travel to the No. 2 team in the country, North Carolina. The Terps have never beaten a top-3 team with the biggest win coming against No. 4 Penn State in The Terps have of the toughest schedules in the nation, having faced three teams ranked in the top 11 already this season. Against Duke, Maryland picked up its 32nd all-time win against a team ranked in the NSCAA Top 25, beating the No. 22 Blue Devils, 3-2 on Sept. 27. Last season, Maryland defeated No. 17 Duke, 2-0 on Sept. 2 and No. 8 Clemson, 1-0 in overtime on Oct. 13. The only way to be the best is to play the best, said head coach Higgins- Cirovski. We have added high caliber teams such as Connecticut, Notre Dame and Penn State to go along with the challenging ACC schedule. I think we have one of the best schedules in the country. Maryland takes on 12 teams that played in last season s Women s College Cup including three teams that advanced to the NCAA national quarterfinals including runner-up North Carolina. In addition to the Tar Heels, Maryland will also take on 2001 NCAA qualifiers (Clemson, Connecticut, Duke, Florida State, Loyola, Notre Dame, Penn State, Rutgers, Virginia, Wake Forest and William & Mary). Of those 12 teams, eight were ranked in the top 20 of the final NSCAA poll. In taking on preseason No. 9 UConn in the second game of the season, Maryland got a quick taste of what much of its season will be like -- games against top ranked teams. Once again, Higgins-Cirovski has scheduled one of the nation s competitive schedules. The Terps take on eight teams in the preseason NSCAA poll including five in the top nine. The Terps face No. 2 North Carolina (Nov. 1), No. 6 Virginia (W, 2-0 on Oct. 4), No. 7 Notre Dame (L, 5-2 on Sept. 15), No. 8 Penn State (L, 1-0 on Oct. 8), No. 9 Connecticut (L, 3-1 on Sept. 1), No. 14 Clemson (W, 3-2 on Oct. 20), No. 17 Florida State (L, 0-1) and No. 19 Rutgers (W, 5-2 on Sept. 6). Maryland will have a trio of juniors serve as team captains this season: midfielder Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) and defenders Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.) and Carly Viher (Mentor, Ohio). Givens served as a captain last season along with graduated goalkeeper Ali Wolff. Biscoe and Givens were both named to the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic team for last season. With the Terps 5-2 win at Rutgers on Sept. 6, Maryland head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski picked up her 100th career college coaching victory. Higgins-Cirovski currently has a career mark at George Washington and Maryland. She went at George Washington from in leading the Colonials to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. At Maryland, Higgins-Cirovski has led the Terps to NCAA bids in 1999 and 2001 and has a mark in three-plus seasons on the sidelines.
