Elmhurst Lacrosse Players Guide to Posi4ons 1

You Are: The Keeper of the Game Lacrosse was invented by Na2ve Americans and why we play is a direct connec2on to the originators of the sport. US Lacrosse has infused this connec2on into their overarching philosophy, which is en2tled Keepers of the Game. Elmhurst Lacrosse embraces these core values: 100%. Elmhurst Lacrosse coaches, players, parents, and Board Members hold each other accountable to embody the following core- values: Respect: hold the sport s tradi4ons in the highest regard and esteem. Respect permeates throughout, on and off the field. Honor: behave with high moral standards that show you fully appreciate the privilege of playing lacrosse. Honor the opportunity to par4cipate through grace and humility. Integrity: to serve the game well means that you will act with honesty and sincerity on and off the field, undivided in head, heart and hand. Good Sportsmanship: each person, teammate, opponent, and referee is part of the same game. Valuing the experience over the outcome serves the greater good and is integral to the spirit of the game. Teamwork: a joint ac4on performed by a group of people in which each person subordinates his or her individual interests and opinions to the unity and efficiency of the group. The team is bigger than any individual. ConnecFon: long aoer the last game, something else remains: connec4on, camaraderie, community. Lacrosse forges friendships, unity and family. Without the people, it is just another compe44on. Syracuse University s Cody Jamieson talks about the values of the game. Cody is a Na4ve American who explains why we play very well: hwp://

Elmhurst Lacrosse You will be assigned a posi4on study your posi4on sec4on before each game. Parents: walk through this with your boys and use the test yourself sec4on. By doing so, you will be pu`ng yourself in the right posi4on on the field to help the team. Every posi4on is important. When each posi4on defense, awack, midfield, and goalie works together, great things happen. Game 4me! 3

Elmhurst Lacrosse A few 4ps: LeO Midfield and Right Midfield are the exact same posi4ons and have the same responsibili4es they just take place on opposite sides of the field. Same too for LeO AWack and Right AWack. Same too for LeO Defense and Right Defense. Learn one posi4on you ve learned the other, just switch sides! 4

Defense Overall Defense is like a fist. We play a One on One Crash Defense Slides on the ball come from the center defender who is CRASH Players slide (leave their man) to cover CRASH s man when he slides on the ball. The player who covers the middle for CRASH depends on where the ball is (specifics are in each posi4on sec4on) on the field I ve got ball I m crash I ve got your back In transi4on and sewled defense always sprint to the space you own rather than chase a man all over the field because opponents can t score from 20 yards away. Pick up your man in the your zone and then play one- on- one defense No one s there? Cheat to the middle and be ready to slide on anyone driving to the goal. We posi4on our bodies to force opponents to go away from the middle and force our opponents to use their weak hand. We own the space in front of our goal! 5

Offense Overall Offense is like an open hand. The more space we create by playing in our posi4ons the bewer chance we have of crea4ng goals and assists. We run a offense: our rhythm is pass- pass- dodge; when you dodge, if there is not a shot or open pass, run away from pressure and then; pass- pass- dodge. Remember: Triangles create space Clear Through: get out of the way when a teammate is dodging. You need to put yourself in the right posi4on to react to a dodge and not bring their defender to the dodger! Triangles! Dodge or Pass: When you have the ball either become an immediate threat to score or move the ball. Triple Threat: Body language with s4ck (ball carriers: s4ck behind the body, well protected, with forward elbow high and back turned slightly, eyes up) signals you are ready to pass, dodge or shoot at any 4me. 6

Terms Coaches Will Use To Direct Players SeIled offense or defense: our posi4ons in the half field set. Fast Break: unsewled, off loose balls being picked up or middies running ball down field w/o a defender on him Slow Break: middies carry ball downfield, they are covered, there is no open space to goal, run the ball to awack, and pass it them to set up offense. Ride: when the opponents goalie makes a save or we turn the ball over in the offensive end. AWack and Middies go into the ride to prevent the opponent from moving the ball into the other end of the field. Clear: when our goalie makes the save or we get a turn over in the defensive end we are clearing the goalie, middies, and defense clear the ball from the defensive end to the offensive end of field. X: this is the posi4on behind the goal on offense. In slow breaks we want to get the ball to x (furthest area away from the opponents goal) to set the offense. On defense if we say cover X we mean cover behind the goal. 7

Rides Their goalie makes a save or we turn it over Center Defense If the other team s goalie has the ball and wants to throw to an aoackman it s a long pass so stay with your man, but stay 10 yards away from him, chea2ng to the inside and towards your goal. If you see a fast break developing you have to cover your space in front of the goal - be the fist. Center D is the first line of defense stop the middie first; force a pass and get back to the front of the goal. CD See fast break defense next page! 99

Fast Break - Defense Center Defense When the offense is running free with the ball Pack it in 2ght! Don t cover man. Cover and protect your space. CD is the first line of defense if a man is running with the ball alone leave your man, stay in front of him, stop him, force him to make a pass. LD CD RD 100

Yes, chase missed shots behind the goal (team closest to missed shots as it goes out of bounds gets the ball! Yes, go a_er loose balls when the ball is to the side or behind. BUT if an opponent gets the ball return to this spot. Pick up your man there! Cover the man behind the goal only when he has the ball. Remember you can run through the crease; the offense can t. Run through the crease to cut off your man. This is your advantage! Always use hands to force opponent outside. He raises to shoot or pass poke or li_ the booom hand. If ball is with middies up top cheat to side of goal and look to back up. LD CD RD 101

Clears Our Goalie Save or We Get a Turn Over Center Defense When the goalie saves the ball, watch him and run to this space. When you catch it run up the sidelines with your eyes up field looking for an open man. Never run or throw the ball into the middle area of our goal. If you are uncovered delay let the midfielders clear through to midfield; then run toward the right midfield spot or le_ midfield spot to catch a pass on the run. Catch the ball, eyes up, look for an open man. CD 102

GOALIE 105

Always in Goal Except on Clears Goalie Stop Shots! On a save you have 4 seconds to stand in the crease First look to middies (breaking down field) look first to the middie on the side of the field the shot came from. If they are not open pass to defense on wings. If they are covered and no one is in front of you run un2l you see an open teammate. On a clear here is where your teammates should be. Do not pass in front of the goal! LM CM RM LD CD RD AOer a save always exit the crease either to the side or behind the goal. If you lose the ball the ball won t be right in front of the goal! 106

Always in Goal Except on Clears Goalie You must always be talking like a play- by- play announcer. You are the eyes and ears of the defense. Ball top right. Ball top le_. Ball side right. Ball side le_. Ball at X. If your teammates are out of posi2on or if there is a man open in front of the goal yell to your defense to cover. Remember on a missed shot the team closest to the ball when it goes out of bounds gets the ball chase missed shots out of bounds! LM RM CM LD RD CD 107
