3 Bobby Kramig Head Coach 6th Year ( Record) Asoccer icon in Southwestern Ohio, Miami University head coach Bobby Kramig enters his 20th year as the mentor of Miami soccer and sixth year at the helm of a women s program that has experienced dramatic success under his guidance. Over the past five seasons, Kramig has taken an infant women s soccer program and developed it into one of the premier programs in the Mid-American Conference and Great Lakes Region. Kramig has posted a solid (.589) mark since the start of the women s program, including a stunning (.708) record over the past three seasons that includes three consecutive MAC Championship match appearances, two MAC Tournament titles and back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths. Last season, Kramig guided the Red and White to the most impressive postseason run in MAC history, outscoring three MAC Tournament foes by a combined score of 14-2 on the way to a second straight MAC Tournament Title and stunning nationally-ranked West Virginia, 1-0, in what was arguably the biggest first-round upset of the 2001 NCAA Tournament. The RedHawks concluded the season as the first MAC team to receive votes in the final NSCAA Top 25 poll. Miami made its inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000 after clinching the program s first MAC Tournament Championship with a 1-0 double-overtime defeat of Bowling Green. The Red and White fell short in its NCAA Tournament debut but not without making some noise, falling 4-3 in a thrilling double-overtime match with Big Ten power Michigan. The pivotal season for Kramig s Miami women s soccer program season came in 1999, when the Red and White posted the biggest single-season turnaround in the nation. After posting just 12 wins in its first two seasons as a varsity program, the RedHawks won 14 of their first 16 games on the way to a program record 17 wins and their first MAC Championship match, which was decided by penalty kicks in favor of Eastern Michigan after 150 minutes of play. Over the past three seasons, Kramig s players also have raked in an impressive array of individual honors at the conference, state, regional and national levels. Last season, Miami placed four individuals on the all-mac first team, including MAC Player of the Year Andrea Cunningham, and two on the second team, raising the Red and White s three-year total to eight first-team and six second-team honorees. Miami also has placed 10 players on the NSCAA All-Great Lakes region team and 16 on the all-ohio team since At the national level, Cunningham was recognized as an NSCAA first-team all-american in 2000, while Danielle Berkemeier was honored as a 1999 freshman all-american by Soccer Buzz. Kramig came to Miami in 1983 to take over a men s soccer program that was being reinstated after a one-year absence. In 16 years with the now-defunct program, Kramig amassed a (.492) record that included two conference titles and was named MAC Coach of the Year three times. He guided the program until 1998, coaching both the men s and women s varsity programs for two seasons. In all, Kramig s men s program produced 47 all-ohio selections, 33 all-conference honorees and 23 all-region selections. A native of Cincinnati, Kramig was an all-city goalkeeper at Wyoming High School and went on to play collegiately at Florida Southern, where he was twice named team MVP and earned all-state honors as a senior. In the fall of 1982, Kramig accepted his first full-time coaching position, serving as head women s and assistant men s coach at Morehead State. He directed the women s program to a 13-3 mark and the Kentucky Intercollegiate Soccer Association Championship, while earning Kentucky Coach of the Year accolades. Avidly involved in the soccer community, Kramig is responsible for starting the M League, a youth soccer program in the Oxford community that incorporates his student-athletes as coaches. Seven of Kramig s former women s soccer players are still active in soccer coaching after making their coaching debuts with the M League. Kramig also initiated the Miami Spring Classic, an annual tournament which brings in more than 200 youth soccer teams every spring. A past president of the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Coaches Association, Kramig holds an NSCAA Advanced National Coaching Diploma and a United States Soccer Federation A coaching license. Kramig is a member of the MAC Soccer Advisory Committee and chairman of the McGuffey Foundation School Board of Trustees. Kramig and his wife, Karen, live in Oxford with their son Rob (14) and daughter Anna (7). 4 MIAMI UNIVERSITY SOCCER 2002 Spring Pprospectus Season Outlook When the current senior class of Miami University s soccer program entered its freshman season in 1999, it took responsibility for a fledgling program that had posted just 12 wins and no Mid-American Conference Tournament appearances in two seasons as a varsity sport. Three seasons later, arguably the most dominant class in MAC soccer history has posted an impressive list of accolades that includes three consecutive MAC Championship match appearances, two MAC Tournament titles, two NCAA Tournament appearances, and, last season, the MAC s first NCAA Tournament victory. Individually, the class has spearheaded a Miami offense that has led the league in scoring for three straight seasons and earned an impressive array of honors, including 10 all-mac honors, eight NSCAA Great Lakes all-region selections, a Soccer Buzz Freshman all-american and an NSCAA first-team all- American. This senior class has been spectacular with the success it s realized over the past three seasons, Head Coach Bobby Kramig says about a class that has a stellar (.708) career record. They ve accomplished all we ve asked them to accomplish and given us everything in the process. They ve established a tradition of excellence here that will serve as a foundation for the future of the program. With one more season still ahead, a class that already has attained a career s worth of success, has its eyes focused on a number of lofty goals, including an elusive MAC regular-season title, a league record third straight MAC Tournament title and a third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. I don t see there being any additional pressure on this class this season, Kramig said. I want them to take another step in their development as a team and individual players. I want them to continue to make the team their top priority. I want to continue to develop the program by playing even better soccer than in the past three years. Their senior season should just be one more step toward achieving those goals. FORWARDS With two of the top three career scorers in MAC history leading the way, an offense that has averaged a league-high 2.5 goals per game over the past three seasons has every intention of continuing its torrid pace. Last season, forwards Danielle Berkemeier and Andrea Cunningham ranked as the MAC s top scoring tandem for the third consecutive season. The duo already has amassed a combined 86 goals and 39 assists in their careers and each has surpassed the century mark for points in their careers. Berkemeier and Cunningham have accounted for 27 of Miami s 45 game-winning goals over the past three seasons and are each three-time all-mac honorees. Cunningham was the 2001 MAC Player of the Year, while both earned first-team all- MAC honors a season ago. Expected to step into a more prominent role this season is sophomore forward Ashley Swinehart, a former high school All-American who contributed three goals and four assists during her freshman campaign. According to Kramig, Swinehart will be looked to as more of a goal scorer this season and likely will share the field with both Berkemeier and Cunningham at times, forming a dangerous triple threat for the Red and White. In Berkemeier, Cunningham and Swinehart, I think we have the three best frontrunners in the conference, Kramig said. There has not been a team in the league that can match our speed and skill up front, and I don t see any reason this year should be any different. Rounding out Miami s forward corps is freshman Emily Hurd, a Marietta, Ga., product who Kramig labels as a passionate player and terrific goal scorer. MIDFIELDERS According to Kramig, the key to the RedHawks success in 2001 was not its scorers, but rather a midfield that helped Miami control play and set up scoring opportunities. With the center of the midfield returning intact, the Red and White should be well equipped to continue its success in Leading the way are three-time all-mac selection Shaedyn Cousino, a senior, and 2001 all-great Lakes Region honoree Danielle Altiero, a redshirt junior who posted the highest scoring season of any midfielder in Miami women s soccer history last season. Shaedyn Cousino has been a dominant force in the MAC since her freshman season, Kramig said. She s always been a terrific defender and physically gifted player, but she s worked very hard at broadening the scope of her game and becoming a playmaker. Kramig is quick to admit, however, that the true magician of the midfield when it comes to making plays is Altiero. In my mind, Danielle Altiero is the most creative and skillful player the MAC has ever seen, Kramig said. She s extremely dangerous as both a playmaker and a goal scorer. Rounding up the center of the midfield is sophomore Laura Freel, who started 11 games as a freshman while contributing two goals and two assists. Laura Freel is coming off an outstanding freshman season, Kramig said. She s an insightful, skillful player, and we ll be looking for her to take on more organizational responsibilities in the midfield this season. Out wide, Miami is led by senior Katie Milligan, a twotime MAC all-tournament selection, who ranks as the highest career scorer in Miami midfield history. Milligan enters the season with 11 goals and eight assists. Katie Milligan has long been regarded as one of the top flank midfielders in the league, Kramig said. She s fast and skillful and is always at her best in the postseason. Battling to replace graduated starter Julie Grosso on the other side are sophomore Megan Shapiro, who played in 19 games last season, and redshirt freshman Jessica Godshall, who rebounded from a fall knee injury to post a solid spring. Megan had a great freshman year for us and brings a lot of speed, skill and flare, Kramig said. Jessica showed terrific improvement during the spring and gained a lot of experience. All things considered, I don t think there s a better midfield in the conference. DEFENDERS After graduating five players, including three starters over the past two seasons, Kramig admits that Miami s least experi-

5 enced position is defender, where a number of players will need to step up. At sweeper, Miami will be able to draw from the experience of veteran seniors Audry Wieman and Holly Wildenhaus. Wieman started 21 games a year ago, while Wildenhaus overcame a knee injury to make 19 appearances. Audry and Holly did a great job for us last season, Kramig said. They re both intelligent, well-organized players with great communication skills. Audry was playing her best soccer at the end of last season and had a great tournament. The Red and White s other returning starter at defender is junior Tricia Gill, who has shown tremendous promise over the past two seasons. Gill started 20 games a year ago. Tricia is one of the best athletes in the MAC, Kramig said. She was a stalwart defender for us last year and will be key to our defense this season. Battling to replace 2001 MAC all-tournament selection Katie Mach, who graduated in the spring, are a quartet of young players that includes redshirt sophomore Michaela Fink, who missed last season with a torn ACL, sophomores Kristy Tamaksa and Jen Leet and freshman Lindsay Dunmead. GOALKEEPERS After three consecutive seasons of being forced to start new goalkeepers, Kramig can take a measure of relief this season as senior Katie Karlander returns for her second season as the RedHawk goalkeeper. Karlander, who became the first Miami goalkeeper to earn all-mac and all-great Lakes Region status in 2001, posted a 0.96 goals against average that included 7.5 shutouts. According to Kramig, however, Karlander provides much more than impressive statistics. Katie is clearly the best goalkeeper in Miami history, and is probably the best in the MAC, Kramig said. She combines great athleticism, flawless technique and tremendous leadership qualities. She s really everything you could want in a goalkeeper. Battling to back up Karlander are junior Emily Smith, a walk-on that is coming off an impressive spring, and freshman Leigh Terry, a native of Grand Haven, Mich. Emily is this team s unsung hero, Kramig said. Her commitment, loyalty and dedication to this team are unsurpassed. She s a great role model for the younger players, and a major factor in this program s success. Leigh is a terrific athlete and dedicated soccer player that we expect big things from. THE SCHEDULE As the Miami soccer program has evolved, Kramig has made sure the non-conference schedule has evolved with it. This season is no exception, as Miami takes on a rugged out-ofconference slate that should prepare it for both MAC play and the postseason. The RedHawks open their season in New York, battling traditionally strong programs Hofstra and Stony Brook before returning home for the first Miami University/Adidas Invitational. Joining Miami in the tournament are an impressive field that includes Evansville, Georgia Southern and St. John s Season Outlook Miami s other non-conference outings include regional foes Butler and Wright State and a home bout with Purdue Miami s first home date with the Big Ten. I really like the 2002 schedule, Kramig said. The nonconference schedule is going to provide us with the competition we need to prepare for the Mid-American Conference. The RedHawks also face a rigorous conference slate which includes six home and six away outings. The conference schedule is the conference schedule, Kramig said. We go where we go, play where we play and play when we play. The key to winning a balanced conference like the MAC is consistency. When you ve got to play 12 conference games, you can t just be good six times or you won t even make the tournament. You have to play consistently good soccer day in or day out, because it s truly a league where anyone can beat you on a given day. Though Miami appears to have the luxury of playing 2001 MAC semifinalists Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Ohio at home and likely will appear as the MAC preseason favorite, Kramig cautions his team about resting on past laurels. We need to be mindful of the fact that you may have been a finalist or champion a year ago, but that was last year, Kramig said. The eternal question that needs to be answered is what have you done for me lately? 11 MATCH OF THE CENTURY: In an ironic twist, arguably the biggest match in Miami women s soccer history was also the 100th match for the Miami women s soccer program. Miami s 1-0 upset of nationally ranked West Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 14, 2001, marked the program s 100th match. Started in 1997, Miami s women s soccer program has come a long way in its first 101 matches, posting a record, while advancing to three consecutive MAC Championship matches, winning two MAC Tournament Titles and earning two NCAA Tournament berths. SEALING THE DEAL: Though Miami was solid in outscoring its opponents by a margin in first-half action in 2001, the RedHawks and their depth were able to seal the deal with their second-half play. In 23 matches, Miami outscored the opposition by a more than 3-to-1 (32-9) margin in the second half. The RedHawks blanked 16 of their 23 opponents, including both NCAA Tournament foes, during the second half, with just two opponents tallying multiple second-half scores. The RedHawks finished the season with a 0.39 second-half goals against average and averaged 1.4 goals per contest in the second half. ALL OR NOTHING: The difference between a win and a loss was far more than a fine line for the RedHawks in Miami dominated in its 15 wins, outscoring the opposition 51-8 while shutting out nine opponents. In victory, Miami s offense scored an impressive 3.4 goals per game, while its defense surrendered a mere 0.50 goals per contest. In seven losses and a tie, however, Miami s offense was virtually silenced, enduring a 17-4 deficit and averaging just 0.47 goals per contest. Miami was shut out four times in 2001 and never scored more than one goal in a loss. IT TAKES TWO: Two was the magic number for Miami s offense in When the RedHawks scored at least twice, they were unbeatable, winning 13-of-13 contests. Conversely, the RedHawks were when scoring just one goal and when being held scoreless. Miami s lone wins when scoring less than two goals were a 1-0 defeat of Cincinnati on Sept. 17 and a 1-0 defeat of West Virginia on Nov. 14. FIRST STRIKE: Capturing the early momentum was a key for Miami in The RedHawks were a perfect when they net the first goal of a match. In contrast, when Miami surrendered the first goal of the match, it was The Red and White rallied from a deficit only once all season, resulting in a 1-1 tie with Ball State. NO TURKIES: While most teams are wrapping their seasons up when November rolls around, Miami is really just getting warmed up. Since it first qualified for the MAC Tournament in 1999, Miami has posted a November record of (.708). Of those 12 November battles, all but one took place either in the MAC or NCAA Tournament. Miami owns an (.708) postseason record. CUNNINGHAM BECOMES MAC ALL-TIME SCORING LEADER: With a second-half goal versus Buffalo on Nov. 6, junior Andrea Cunningham surpassed former Buffalo standout Paula Listrani as the MAC s career scoring leader. Cunningham, who has 107 career points off 45 goals and 17 assists, netted the goal in the 84th minute Recap Notes MISS NOVEMBER: As good as Miami has been as a team during the postseason, it is impossible to ignore the individual achievements of junior forward Danielle Berkemeier, who has merited a reputation as a big-game player. Through 12 postseason contests over the past three seasons, Berkemeier has netted 11 goals, including a remarkable seven game-winning strikes. WHAT A RUN: After struggling through its first two seasons as a varsity program, the last three seasons have been a dream for the Red and White. Over the past three seasons, Miami has forged an impressive (.708) record, made three trips to the MAC Championship Game, won two MAC Tournament championships and earned consecutive NCAA Tournament berths. During that same stretch, Miami went from last in the MAC in goals per game to leading the league the past three seasons. NATIONALLY SPEAKING: With a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and a first-round upset of nationally-ranked West Virginia, Miami s women s soccer team succeeded in putting itself on the national map. The Red and White received votes in the final NSCAA Top 25 poll, marking the first time Miami has ever been mentioned in a national poll. Also included in the NSCAA Top 25 were No. 15 Cincinnati, who Miami beat 1-0 on Oct. 17, No. 16 Dayton, which eliminated the RedHawks from the NCAA Tournament, and No. 21 SMU, which handed Miami a 2-1 overtime loss in both teams season opener. REDHAWKS PLACE FIVE ON ALL-MAC TEAM: During an exciting night for the Miami women s soccer program, five RedHawks were honored by their peers at the 2001 MAC Women s Soccer Awards Banquet on Oct. 8. Leading the way was junior Andrea Cunningham, who was named MAC Player of the Year after leading the league in goals for the second straight year. Joining Cunningham as first-team all-mac selections were junior Danielle Berkemeier, who ranked among the top five in the MAC in goals and assists, and Danielle Altiero, who ranked second in the MAC in assists. Earning second team honors were junior Shaedyn Cousino, a three-time all-mac selection, and Katie Karlander, the first Miami goalkeeper to earn all-league plaudits. REDHAWKS PLACE FOUR ON NSCAA ALL-REGION TEAM: Following a stellar season that carried it to a second consecutive Mid-American Conference Tournament title and the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Miami University s women s soccer team placed four members on the National Soccer Coaches of America Association s (NSCAA) Great Lakes Region team. Andrea Cunningham, a 2000 NSCAA first-team All-American and the 2001 MAC Player of the Year, notched first-team honors, while Katie Karlander was named to the second team, and Danielle Berkemeier and Danielle Altiero were selected to the third team. Miami s four overall selections tied the RedHawks with Notre Dame for most selections from one team. A BRAINY MIDFIELD: All-MAC midfielders Danielle Altiero and Shaedyn Cousino were awarded for their work on the field and in the classroom in Altiero was named a second-team Verizon academic all-district selection, while Cousino was named an NSCAA third-team Scholar all-american. Cousino is a second generation all-american, as her father was an all-american in football at Miami Spring Pprospectus 11
