Today we welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Dalbeattie Star to Bellslea Park for our William Hill Scottish Cup 1 st Round tie. This is our first ever meeting with Dalbeattie Star and that is the beauty of the Scottish Cup. It is always good to meet new people and make new friends. Neither of the two sides are going to be gracing the Hampden turf on Cup Final day so we need to make the most of the earlier rounds and hope to get as far as we can. Making money and enjoying the ride while it lasts is what clubs at our level aspire to in the Scottish Cup. Last season was disappointing in that we were knocked out at the first round after a replay at Linlithgow Rose. We have should have won the game at Bellslea and then in the replay got Bryan Hay sent off while leading 1-0 going on to eventually losing the game. In this competition it is all about grasping your chances and getting a bit of luck along the way. Hopefully we are not looking back this evening with regret. Last week we were unlucky to lose at Formartine United given the lateness of the goal and how well we had defended. Formartine didn t have many chances and it is fair to say that we had the best one by a mile. That s football though. The previous midweek we witnessed a great game under the new lights here at Bellslea when we defeated Cove Rangers to get into the Aberdeenshire Cup Final. I said in my programme notes for the match that we have never retained the famous old trophy and this gives us a great chance to do so. Inverurie Locos will also be looking at the final as a great opportunity to win the cup so a good game is in prospect. That s for another day though as we have the most important game of the season so far to get through first. I don t buy into the fact that we are favourites because of the distance Dalbeattie have to travel for the game. They are like us in the Highland League where traveling distances is second nature. Where we should be favourites though is the fact we are at home and with the backing of our fans. They got right behind us in the Semi Final against Cove and we will need them to do the same again today. I hope the travelling party from Dalbeattie enjoy their visit to the Buchan corner and go away with a good impression of our area. 4 The performance and result against Cove Rangers must rank as the best of the season so far. What were your thoughts on the match and how delighted are you on reaching the Aberdeenshire Cup Final? I think it was a very disciplined performance. First half they had a couple of near misses but we managed to keep them out. Second half we created the better chances I felt and at the same time limited them to shots from distance. It certainly was the best defensive performance the lads have put in and that's the whole team not just the defenders. With the win we get ourselves in to a final which the guys have earned. It will be a good occasion where the best team on the day will reap the rewards. Finals are great for any club. They are days out for the players, coaching staff, directors and of course the fans who have followed us through thick and thin. Finals bring everyone together. Last weekend against Formartine United the players gave everything and were very unlucky not to take anything from the game. What was your reaction to the game? I have no complaints about the Formartine game. The lads put in a tremendous effort, especially after having had a tough match on the Wednesday. Formartine are a good side and are very ambitious but we matched them on the day and in my opinion there wasn't much between the teams. I am proud of how the boys performed against one of the top teams on their own patch. But as well as hard work and ability you need a bit of luck and unfortunately we didn't get the rub of the green with their goal and the chances which fell to us. Over the last 4 games we have only conceded 2 goals which shows we are heading in the right direction. At least it gets the first meeting between the two sides out of the way since both management teams took over. Today we face Dalbeattie Star in the Scottish Cup. How difficult a tie will this be and how important are matches like these to the club? Scottish cup games are always difficult. There is such an incentive in these games of progressing in the tournament and landing that big tie. Again like finals these games are great occasions as they allow you to play different teams from around the country and meet new people. We all know how financially rewarding getting in to the next rounds are for us part time clubs but the players also look to get through to show that the highland league is a good standard and pip themselves against better players. It is tough to prepare for games against teams from other leagues as you are not familiar with them but we have done our homework and no doubt Dalbeattie will have done the same. This is the first time I will have been involved in a game against Dalbeattie Star so I look forward to meeting everyone and welcome all those involved with the club to our home, All the best, Mark.

Today s visitors Dalbeattie star fc Full Name: Dalbeattie Star FC Nickname: The Star Founded: 1976 Ground: Islecroft Stadium, Dalbeattie Club Colours: Home Kit Red & Black Striped Shirts, Black Shorts & Red Socks. Capacity: 1,500 (seated 104) Chairman: Clark Lamont Manager: Darren Kerr League: Scottish Lowland Football League Although records show a team playing sporadic friendlies under the name of Dalbeattie Star as early as 1900, is wasn t until five years later that they first played competitive matches winning two of the three junior cup competitions they entered that season and finishing runners up in the other. As they became the leading team in the town it was decided on 27th August 1906 that they would turn senior and just under a year later on 13th August 1907 they were admitted to the SFA. The first major success as a senior club came in 1908/09 when they won the Southern Counties Cup and the club continued on a steady basis until 1914 when they became one of the first in the region to fold when the First World War began that same year. Three years after football resumed in 1919, the Star committee took the bold step of going professional but this proved to be a disastrous move which virtually ruined the club financially. However one bright note from that season came when the club qualified for the Scottish Cup for the first time ever, though they lost to heavily to Edinburgh side St Bernards. In 1924/25 the Star won their first ever league title and from 1929/30 to 1933/34 they were league champions five years in a row. Success wasn t limited to the league either, as during this period they regularly qualified for the Scottish Cup which included a visit to Dalbeattie by Celtic on 20th January 1934 which the Glasgow side won 6-0 in front of a then record crowd of 2,376. Star also reached the final of the Scottish Qualifying cup twice but on both occasions were unable to bring the trophy back home. In the last Qualifying cup competition before it was split between South and North in 1930/31, Star lost 1-0 in a replay to Bathgate at Somerset Park in front of a crowd of 3,229. The first match at Palmerston Park ended 1-1 with a crowd of 3,634 watching. The following season the Star reached the first ever Scottish Qualifying cup (South) final but went down 6-1 to Beith at Rugby Park with 2,130 spectators attending. Big crowds were not just restricted to cup finals back then as on 8th February 1936 a home record attendance of 3,160 watched the Star lose narrowly 1-0 to St Mirren at Maidenholm Park in the Scottish cup. Incredibly after winning five league titles in a row Star folded for a year and from then until the outbreak of World War two they struggled badly like so many clubs. After the war the club rejoined the South of Scotland league but only for one year and it was no surprise to anyone when they seemingly folded for good in In March 1976 a group of enthusiasts resurrected the club and the name of Dalbeattie Star was back. Now playing at Islecroft Stadium the clubs first trophy back was the 1977/78 Haig Gordon Cup when they beat Lincluden Swifts 3-0 thanks to hat trick from David Clachrie. In 1983 the first ever Scottish Cup tie at Islecroft was played but Arbroath spoiled the party winning 5-1. The following season the club became league champions for the first time in over 50 years and in 1985/86 they successfully defended their title. Another league championship arrived in 1988/89 and wasn t until 2011/12 that they were crowned South of Scotland champions again. In between times though there was a steady stream of cup triumphs and Scottish Cup adventures. These included a narrow 2-1 defeat to East Stirlingshire at a freezing Islecroft in 1999 and the following season a great day out at Albion Rovers was had by all that ended goalless, but unfortunately the replay ended in a 5-1 defeat. In 2001/02 the club entered a team in to the East of Scotland league as well as continue to field a side in the South and promotion was gained to the East Premier Division in 2003/04. After relegation in 2005/06 the Star returned to the top flight the following season as champions with a team of great promise. In 2008/09 Star came so close to winning the Premier Division but lost out on a last match decider against Spartans as suspensions and injuries finally took their toll. That season was probably regarded as Star s finest since being reformed as they played with a style and panache rarely seen before. They also lifted some silverware winning the East League cup beating Preston Athletic 2-0, and Southern Counties cup was won with a touch of class beating South champions Threave Rovers 5-0 at Meadow Park, Queen of the South 5-0 in the semi final at home, and they lifted the cup with a resounding 4-1 away to Annan Athletic. The only downside to performances and results like this is that it certainly attracts attention and when Annan were elected in to the SFL weeks later it was no surprise when they came along and signed a number of the Star players to strengthen their squad and it has to be said virtually all the players who made the switch to Galabank did very well for their new club. Unfortunately this left the Star somewhat short for the coming season and with much regret they had to resign from the East league. The South League cup was won in 2010/11 but it was the South League title that was the main target and and in 2011/12 the club became champions for the first time in 23 years. The title was clinched with a 1-1 draw away to Threave Rovers as the Star ended the campaign unbeaten winning 21 of the 24 matches played. As well as the league title Star won a further four cup competitions beating Threave Rovers 2-0 in the final of the Potts cup, St Cuthbert Wanderers 4-1 in the League cup, Queen of the South 8-1 in the Southern Counties cup and Threave Rovers 3-0 in the Haig Gordon cup. On top of all that they also collected the fair play award and the overall best team in the South trophy. It was a season of unprecedented success for the club and the following year was always going to be difficult to follow that. However they team had a really good attempt at it as they retained the league title with a couple of games to spare, though their long unbeaten run in the league came to an end at 41 games. The League cup was won for the third year in a row with a 3-1 win over Threave at Palmerston and the same team was beaten in the Tweedie cup final at Galabank. The season was rounded off in grand style on the final day with a 6-2 victory over Nithsdale Wanderers to retain the Challenge Cup and complete another highly successful campaign.

Dalbeattie star player profiles Darren Martin - Experienced keeper now in his third season at the club. Dodo is a laid back character who as well as being a fine shot stopper is an excellent influence on the players around him. Craig Fergusson - Another of the longest serving players at the club, Fergie is Mr Reliable in the middle of the park. Another tireless worker, he has a good footballing brain as well as being a good team mate. Ritchie Maxwell (pictured below) - Club captain and longest serving player. Ritchie is Mr Consistency as he always performs to a high level. Can play anywhere along the back four to good effect. Greig Thorburn - Just signed earlier this month from Gretna 2008 and can play either full back or wing back. A former Kilmarnock and Annan Athletic player, Greig made his debut last week at Galashiels and is an excellent addition to the team. Curtiss Wilson - Now in his second spell at the club after rejoining from Wigtown and Bladnoch in the summer. Curtiss was a vital player in the Star team that won back to back South of Scotland League titles before the Lowland League was formed. Stuart MacPherson - Another player who has just re-joined the club this month. Big Stu captained the side during his first spell at Islecroft and is a commanding centre half. A hugely popular player with the fans. Craig Neill - The youngster signed from Queen of the South at the beginning of 2014/15. He is a strong, left sided centre back who can fill in at left back when needed to good effect. David Proudlock - Teenager joined at the beginning of this season from Crichton FC and has performed well at right back when called upon. A very composed player for being so young, he is one for the future. Lee Wells - One of the longer serving players at the club, Wellsy is a quality centre back who has also played in the holding midfield role. Chosen to represent Scotland in the 6-a-side Euro Championships in Croatia. Lewis Dunn - Equally comfortable as left back or left wing half, Lewis has been a sensation since joining Star in the summer. With boundless amounts of energy and skill he is a great favourite with the fans. Lewis Todd - Lewis signed from Gretna 2008 last season and has made the centre midfield position his own this term. He has a good touch and awareness on the ball and has a more than decent scoring record as well. Justin Nicholl (pictured below) - Another new signing this season, Paddy is the creative influence in centre midfield. He has a superb left foot and is a big threat, capable of scoring the most spectacular goals. Dean Fyfe - Just signed a few weeks ago from local rivals Threave Rovers, Deano is a fine acquisition to the squad. His direct running down the flanks makes him one to look out for. Jonathan Baxter - Teenager signed midway through last season, he is another for the future. Jonny has a cool head on young shoulders and coupled with an excellent touch, is a good finisher. Lewis Sloan - Another player in his second spell at the club, Sloany has been top scorer, and top of the assists chart, for the last two seasons which isn t bad for a creative midfielder. On his day the ex Kilmarnock and Queen of the South player is as good as any in the Lowland League. Jamie McHarrie - Another fans favourite Jamie joined the club from Wigtown in the summer. A tireless worker up front, Jamie always gives 100% for the cause and has a good scoring record. Tommy Muir - Local lad Tommy has come on leaps and bounds the last season or so. His all round play is improving all the time and for a tall player he has a really good touch, as well as a good eye for a goal. Graeme Bell - Another of the more experienced players in the squad, Graeme has seen it all. Had a number of seasons in the SFL playing up front for Annan though his appearances for Star this season have been limited. His link up play is second to none and now he is back in the squad he will be raring to go. Paul Cook - Nearing the end of his career Cooky stayed on for this season to help out new boss Darren Kerr. A clever player he could always sniff out a goal and is very much an opportunist striker.

Today s visitors - Dalbeattie star In the summer of 2013 the club was accepted into the newly formed Lowland League and though the season ended trophy less it was still considered a success. A more than credible third place was achieved in the inaugural season of the Lowland League but there was major disappointment in two cup final defeats towards the end of the season. Going for a third win in a row in the South of Scotland Challenge Cup (which no one has ever achieved) Star lost to a stoppage time goal going down 2-1 to Wigtown and Bladnoch. However the main target was the SFA South Region Challenge Cup and after defeating newly crowned league champions Spartans 3-2 on their own ground in the semi finals hopes were high. However looking for their first ever triumph in this cup (formerly the Qualifying Cup) Star lost 2-0 to East Kilbride at Palmerston and the chance was gone. We now look forward to another year in the Lowland League and if it is as half as entertaining as the first then we are in for a treat. 11 Highland league match centre Saturday 12 th September 2015 Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Brora Rangers 0-2 Formartine United Formartine produced a superb performance to beat defending champions Brora. United keeper Andy Reid did well to save a shot from Zander Sutherland, and that proved crucial as the visitors then scored the first goal in the game through a fine eighth-minute finish from Garry Wood. Brora threatened with a header from Steven Mackay that went over the bar and they went into the break trailing by a goal to nil. The second half proved to be a tight affair, until Neil Gauld wrapped up the win for Formartine by scoring a header in the 78th minute, shortly after he had replaced Cammy Keith. Buckie Thistle 1-0 Turriff United Turriff's title hopes suffered a blow after they were beaten at Victoria Park. Buckie's goal wasn't the prettiest, with a well taken close-range finish from Jamie Fraser shortly before the break, but the Jags will just be happy to have got the win. Turriff's hopes of a comeback took a huge dent when Paul Young was sent off for his second bookable offence 19 minutes into the second half. The visitors brought on Craig MacAskill and Nikolas Wozniak to try and change the game, but Buckie defended resolutely and held on for the win. Fraserburgh 1-0 Nairn County Fraserburgh edged out Nairn County with a single-goal victory at Bellslea. Conor Gethins came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half, but his curling free-kick went just over the crossbar. The Broch were reduced to 10 men just before the break when Dean Cowie received a straight red card for a late challenge on Gregg Main. The home side began the second half well, despite being a man short, and took the lead with a fine strike from Marc Lawrence on 62 minutes. Nairn applied late pressure to the home goal, but missed their best chance five minutes from time when a Sam Urquhart shot was saved by Joe Barbour and Gethins fired the rebound over the crossbar. Huntly 5-0 Rothes Hunty gained their second league win of the season with a comprehensive victory over struggling Rothes. James Duguid opened the scoring for Huntly in the 18th minute with a near post finish and Dean Donaldson made it two from the penalty spot shortly afterwards. A free-kick from David Booth put the home side three up and firmly in control at the break. Seven minutes into the second half Donaldson scored his second and Huntly's fourth when he converted a cross from Booth. Booth completed the scoring when he held off the challenge of a defender and fired a shot high into the net. Cove Rangers 1-0 Clachnacuddin Connor Scully scored the only goal of the game as Cove kept up their perfect start to the season. The Aberdeen side are without a regular home this term as they wait for their new ground to be built and this was their first home match at North Lodge Park. Scully's goal came midway through the first half when he cut inside from the right wing and unleashed an unstoppable shot high into the net. Daniel Park came close to doubling Cove's lead but his effort was cleared off the line and while Clach battled hard in tough conditions, John Sheran's men won all three points. Forres Mechanics 2-1 Deveronvale Ten-man Forres gained a valuable win over Deveronvale thanks to a late winner from striker Lee Fraser. The hosts threatened first when Simon Allan's free kick flew inches over the crossbar in the 13thminute. It remained goalless at the break and it was Forres who finally broke the deadlock midway through the second half. Another Allan free-kick was met by Ross MacPherson and his miscued effort was poked home from close range by Liam Baxter. Vale were soon level, Graeme Grant bringing down his man in the penalty area and receiving a straight red card. Gary Harris converted from the spot to equalise for the visitors. A superb goal won it for the home side seven minutes from time, substitute Duncan Jones with an excellent through ball over the top to Fraser, who fired home despite being clattered by Vale keeper Grant Pennet. Inverurie Loco Works 0-2 Wick Academy Two goals from midfield maestro Sam Mackay gave Wick an excellent win over Inverurie Locos. Mackay slotted home the opener from six yards in the eighth minute, referee George Roberson over-ruling the offside decision by his assistant to award the goal. It was two just three minutes later as more defensive slip-ups saw Locos fail to clear their lines, allowing Mackay in to slam home his second goal. Locos made three changes either side of half-time as they looked for a way back into the match, but Neil McLean missed a great chance when the ball got tangled up between his feet in the 63rd minute and Wick scrambled clear. More late pressure from the home side came to nothing and Wick saw the game out to take all three points. Strathspey Thistle 2-5 Lossiemouth Lossie got off to a great start against Strathspey and never looked back as they ran out comfortable winners. Ryan Farquhar slotted in the opening goal, before Ryan Green doubled the away side's lead with a header in the 21st minute. James Mackay converted a first-half freekick to reduce the deficit, but Lossie took control of the game in the second half. Aaron Hamilton scored with his first touch after coming on as a substitute, Shawn Scott netted with a tap-in and then late on Dave Chambers provided a cool finish. James McShane hit a 90th-minute consolation for Strathspey but it was a day to forget for the Jags.

Highland league match centre Keith 1-0 Fort William Keith carved out a victory over Fort William in terrible playing conditions at Kynoch Park thanks to a secondhalf goal from Kris Duncan. The visitors threatened early on, but Maroons keeper Daniel Bell was in fine form to keep out efforts from Daniel Mackintosh and John McLeod. Duncan threatened to open the scoring before the break but his effort struck a post. The Keith striker finally broke the deadlock in the 57th-minute with a close-range finish. The final real chance of the game was for Fort as McLeod hit a powerful strike which Bell pushed into the path of Scott MacLean, who shot wide of the target. Tuesday 15 th September 2015 Menzies Distribution North of Scotland Cup Wick Academy 2-1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle Wick Academy are through to the final of the AJG Parcels North of Scotland Cup after coming from behind to beat Caley Thistle at Harmsworth Park. James Wilson gave the Inverness youngsters a 12th minute lead, but two goals in two minutes gave Wick the win. Grant Steven equalised in the 28th minute and Richard MacAdie grabbed the winner from the penalty spot to send the HFL side through to the final, where they will face Forres Mechanics or Nairn County. Wednesday 16 th September 2015 Menzies Distribution North of Scotland Cup Forres Mechanics 0-1 Nairn County Nairn County secured a single goal win at Forres to win through to the final of the North of Scotland Cup, where they will face Wick Academy. Conor Gethins was the hero for the visitors once again with the winning goal eleven minutes into the second half. SHFL News Ally Macleod has resigned as manager of Deveronvale. His decision came after the Banff side lost 4-1 to Inverurie Locos on Saturday. Macleod's No 2 Craig Stratton has also quit. Mark Chisholm, assisted by Scott Fraser, Kevin Souter and Graeme Watt, are preparing the team for this weekend's Scottish Cup first round game at home to Clach. Macleod said: "Mixed emotions today after resigning as manager of Deveronvale FC, sad that the last year has been so tough both on and off the pitch but delighted to be away from a job that was a lot more challenging than I could have ever anticipated. "Football is a results based business and as a management team we failed to produce the results and ultimately that comes down to me as the manager. The decision to walk away was taken after the performance and result on Saturday left me with no option but to remove myself from the role to benefit the football club in the future. "There is a high calibre of player in the squad at Deveronvale and both the results and performances were not to the required standard, in fact they fell well short." Meanwhile, Inverurie have signed Stephen Jeffrey from Formartine on a three-year-deal, while Michael Selfridge has joined from Cove on a six-week loan. The North of Scotland Cup final between Nairn and Wick will now take place on Saturday 21st November at Dudgeon Park, Brora. The game had originally been scheduled to take place on Saturday 10th October, but with Forres, Clach and Brora all at home that day, no appropriate venue was available. But what did the future hold for the club with no money and up to its eyes in debt? I remember two of the committee going round the Bellslea with a sheet for a collection and an appeal over the loud speaker, asking for volunteers to go onto the committee. Times were getting tough. There were no new strips every season like we see today. The Black and White stripes back then had faded until they were cream and grey. There weren t even eleven pairs of socks the same. The Broch team that turned out against Deveronvale in the League Cup at Bellslea on Saturday August 11 th was Stroud, Noble, Third, Simpson, Robertson, G. Strachan, J. Strachan, Summers, Ewen, Forsyth, McBeath. Final score was Broch 1 Vale 5. Ewen scored for the Broch. Next up was Peterhead with a full time score of Broch 3 Peterhead 6 Ouch!! With no money, the Broch turned to an all local policy with guys like Dosby Noble, Brian McCann, Brian Third, Angus Taylor and Peter McDonald playing from time to time. It was reported that club needed gates of 1200 to keep going. The average gate was 300, hard times indeed. The Webster Tyre Co donated 5.5/-. A supporter donated 5/- a lot of money in those days, but it was getting to the stage that one man and his dog were watching the games. A home tie in the Qualifying Cup against Keith gained some vital income with the score Broch 2 Keith 2. The Broch took a 2-0 lead, with Royen Ewen scoring in the 6 th and 22 nd minutes. Woodcock pulled one back from a penalty in 59 minutes and Fowler scored on 72 minutes to earn Keith a replay. Dennis Forsyth was at centre half for the Broch and his brother Bobby wore the number 11 shirt. The replay was one way traffic with Keith winning 5-2. A 2-2 draw at home to Ross County and a 3-3 draw at Elgin showed signs of improvement but 4 straight defeats followed before a morale boosting home win over Buckie Thistle arrived thanks to goals from John Strachan and Brian Third. Sadly that would be the last win for 3 and a half months as 7 defeats including 8-1 and 6-1 thrashings at Keith and Peterhead followed. A 2-0 defeat at Deveronvale in the Aberdeenshire Cup saw the last hope of a trophy come and go and despite a 4-1 victory over Keith with Royen Ewen and George Simpson netting doubles the Broch would only pick up two draws from the last 12 games to finish bottom of the table winning only 3 games and conceding 93 goals in the process. Away from the football you could see The Young Ones with Cliff Richard at the Playhouse for 9d less than 4p in new money. Other things to do in the summer were attending the Boys Brigade Summer Camp at Echt. Travel cost 2 and accommodation was another 1. You slept on a palliasse full of straw in the school gym. Mind you the benefits were playing football all day long until bedtime at 10 o clock. P.T. was in the mornings and was hard so I don t know how kids from today would cope with those conditions, no fancy computers and games back then!!

Appearances: 15; Goals: 0 Russell McBride, Defender/Striker, Age 36: Signed for the Broch 19 years ago but spent two seasons at Elgin City between that time. As club captain Russell is a great leader and one who the younger lads look up to. A tough tackling defender Russell is also very skilful and chips in with the odd goal at set pieces. Has now clocked up over 500 appearances and lifted the Aberdeenshire Cup last season at Kynoch Park. Appearances: 537; Goals: 92 Ryan Christie, Defender, Age 30: Ryan rejoined the club when Kris Hunter took over as manager and brings a wealth of experience and skill to the centre of defence. He is a regular scorer from set pieces and penalty kicks. Appearances: 252; Goals: 32 Marc Dickson, Defender, Age 27: Peterhead lad, Marc is one of the most senior players at the club now. Marc has now made over 300 appearances for the club. Appearances: 337; Goals: 14 Courtney Cooper, Defender, Age 21: Courtney burst into the 1st team five seasons ago making his debut at Rothes and hasn t looked back. Appearances: 148; Goals: 25 Brian Hay, Defender, Age 26: Another young Broch loon who has become an invaluable member of the first team. His delivery from the left and from corners and free kicks cause many dangerous situations for opponents. Appearances: 108; Goals: 7 Stuart Taylor, Defender, Age 21 One of Mark Cowie s close season signings Stuart has previously played for Peterhead and Turriff United. Mainly operates as a right back although he can play at centre half as well. Stuart has already impressed with his defensive qualities and sure to feature prominently in the first team this season Appearances: 4; Goals: 0 John Chalmers, Midfielder, Age 21: Johnny has made over 100 competitive appearances for the first team now and is fast developing into a key member of the team. He has a good range of passes and not afraid to get stuck in despite coming up against more experienced opponents in the midfield engine room. Has also taken over penalty kick duties for the club. Appearances: 113; Goals: 8

Fraserburgh fc player profiles William West, Midfielder, Age 27: Willie is an assured midfield player with an eye for goal having notched 17 last season from an advanced role behind the strikers. Appearances: 396; Goals: 105 Dean Cowie, Midfielder, Age 28: Experienced campaigner Dean has rejoined the club after three seasons with Peterhead the last of which was blighted by injury. His experience will be vital as the Broch look to challenge for more honours and on his day there is not a better midfielder in the League. Appearances: 29; Goals: 8 Grant Thomson, Midfielder, Age 20: Grant joined the club three seasons ago from Ross County and has mainly played for the Aberdeenshire League side where he has excelled. Now a permanent fixture in the first team squad where he has impressed from a central midfield role. Appearances: 18; Goals: 0 Marc Lawrence, Midfielder, Age 17: Marc has joined the club on loan from Peterhead until January 2016 and has made an immediate impression being thrown in against Brora rangers and acquitting himself very well. Appearances: 63; Goals: 12 Aidan Combe, Forward, Age 18: Joined the club last summer having previously played for Keith at under 17 level. Appearances: 26; Goals: 1 Jordi Walker, Forward, Age 18: Jordi made his debut as a substitute in the match against Deveronvale at Bellslea Park last season. Appearances: 9; Goals: 0 Mark Cowie, Manager, Age 30: Mark took over as manager of the Broch when Kris Hunter decided to move to pastures new in April. His experience and calmness from his playing days will be of great assistance to the younger members of the playing squad. He is sure to bring fresh ideas to the team whilst staying true to the club s philosophy of bringing through young talent. Appearances: 242; Goals: 25 Mark is ably assisted by James Duthie who has a wealth of experience at Highland League level, Alex Mair who has been on the Broch s coaching staff for several years now and new faces Steve Doak goalkeeping coach, Brent Bruce fitness coach, Ross Cardno club physio and Leanne Reid assistant physio. There are also two community coaches Shelley Sutherland & Graeme Noble who play a tremendous role with the young age groups.

Cove rangers match report Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Semi Final Wednesday 16 th September 2015 Fraserburgh v Cove Rangers, Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh Cove were first to have an effort at goal when the ball broke to Daryl Nicol inside the Broch box but his shot was well saved by Paul Leask. Nicol then had another chance on 10 minutes when Grant Noble misplaced a pass but once again Leask was equal to the task. Graham Johnston then tried his luck with a free kick which he swung into to the back post but it went just wide. Cove then missed a glorious chance when a cross into the box was headed goalwards by Daniel Park but came back off the upright straight to the feet of Nicol who inexplicably missed from two yards out. Johnston then set Willie West away on the wing and his dangerous cross had to be headed over his own bar by Eric Watson. The Broch took the lead on 18 minutes when John Chalmers found Steven Davidson on the left and his cross into the middle picked out Grant Noble who slotted home from 10 yards out. Cove were still pressing and a slip by Bryan Hay let in Nicol but his effort was deflected wide. From the corner the ball eluded Leask and Hay had to clear off the line. Johnston was giving the Cove fullback a torrid time and his trickery saw him fire a cross into the six yard box but Steven Davidson arrived too late to finish off the move. A Broch free kick was cleared to the edge of the box where Noble returned the ball and Russell McBride s acrobatic overhead kick was well saved by Stuart McKenzie albeit McBride was flagged for offside. Ryan Cowie then broke forward and crossed to the back post where Johnston controlled the ball and sidestepped his marker who seemed to swipe the feet from the Broch forward but referee Watt waved away the home side s appeals for a penalty. Just before halftime both sides had efforts when first Marc Dickson had a shot blocked after good work by Davidson and Chalmers then at the other end Nicol had yet another effort saved by Leask from close range. Half Time: Fraserburgh 1 Cove Rangers 0 The second half started with the Broch pushing for a second and a good move involving West, Cowie and Johnston saw the latter find Chalmers but his effort was blocked. On 52 minutes the Broch stretched their lead when Davidson was barged into inside the box by Watson. Johnston stepped up and hammered the penalty kick into the roof of the net. Cove tried to get back into the game quickly and Leask was out quickly to block and effort from Jamie Watt as the striker bore down on goal. Cowie then swung in a corner to the near post which was met by Hay but his header flew wide of the goal. On the hour the Broch broke after a Cove attack and Davidson played the ball through to Chalmers who was clear of the visitors defence but he lacked the pace to drive into the box and his shot from outside the area was comfortably saved by McKenzie. The game was now into the last quarter and Stuart Duff found Johnny Smith who wriggled free from McBride but shot wildly past the post. Noble then forced a mistake by the Cove defence and West crossed into the middle but it just evaded the lunge from Davidson. Davidson then created another chance but his shot from the edge of the box went straight into McKenzie s hands. The Broch could have added to their lead late on when first Courtney Cooper s header was saved and then Jordi Walker failed to get his effort on target. Full Time: Fraserburgh 2 Cove Rangers 0 Fraserburgh: Paul Leask, Marc Dickson, Russell McBride, Ryan Cowie, Ryan Christie, Bryan Hay, John Chalmers (Courtney Cooper 85), Willie West, Steven Davidson (Jordi Walker 85), Graham Johnston, (Marc Lawrence 63) Grant Noble Subs: Cameron Buchan, Stuart Taylor, Aiden Combe, Scott Cowe Scorers: Grant Noble (18), Johnston (52 pen) Cove Rangers: Stuart McKenzie, Alan Redford (Harry Milne 76), Stuart Walker, Blair Yule, Eric Watson (Stirling Smith 60), Darryn Kelly, Daryl Nicol, Stuart Duff, Jamie Watt (Jonny Smith 54), Daniel Park, Connor Scully Subs: Dean Lawrie, Sam Burnett, Michael Selfridge, John McCaffrey Referee: David Watt

Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Saturday 19 th September 2015 Formartine United v Fraserburgh, North Lodge Park, Pitmedden A combination of confidence and cussedness can take you a long way in football, but the fact that this one went right down to the wire with a very late single goal being the margin of difference between a team at the top of the league and one at the top of the lower end of it, had an awful lot more going on. For a start this was the first encounter between these two since Formartine had relieved the Broch of their manager, fitness coach, goalkeeping coach and Scott Barbour, that in itself was going to up the ante. In addition Broch entered this on the back of a midweek cup win over the hitherto unbeaten Cove while Formartine had taken all three points up at Brora the Saturday before to break Broch s record of having been the last team in near on two years to have done so. That raised the confidence stakes for both. The subtexts to this game ensured a right rip snorter. In the event the spectacle was one of two giants almost punching each other to a standstill in a game that had the appearance of a cup tie more than a league match. It started at a frenzied pace and finished much the same although there was a distinct pattern of Formartine getting on top in terms of territory, possession and pressure and squeezing and squeezing a very resolute visiting team until right at the death there was just enough of a crack to ensure a home victory. For long enough though, it looked like the visitors would hold out sufficient to pinch a point which few would have begrudged them. Within a minute of kick off, Broch pushed into Formartine territory and after McKeown had tidied up neatly at the back to end the opening salvo, he was body checked by Davidson who was booked for his efforts. Although the game was never really a dirty one it certainly wasn t for the faint hearted as neither side was prepared to yield a centimetre to the other and there were some pretty tough dudes out there. The first goal threat came from United after McVitie had pushed on down the flank before picking out Wood. The big striker shielded the ball from McBride before releasing it into the path of Gauld. The wee striker let fly with a fiercely struck low drive that flew just past Leask s left upright. Broch however were nippy on the break and Chalmers, West and Davidson all knew where and how to find each other. Slick though their breaks were the home rearguard was well organised. For all the endeavour of each side, penetration into opposition penalty box was severely restricted. Around the 25 th minute a burst of Formartine pressure spearheaded by Wood yielded three corner kicks in a couple of minutes and a free kick from just beyond the left corner of the area, taken inevitably by Lawson dipped fractionally too late to do damage. As the interval approached, Formartine looked increasingly to be calling the shots but with the visitors looking comfortable enough with eight or more behind the ball and still slippery on the breakaway it was clear that it could still easily go either way. A slick move involving Rodger, Wood and Anderson wove a couple of triangular patterns around and through the Broch defence before the former drew a classy diving save from Leask with a well- judged header from about ten yards out. At the other end Reid pulled a Noble cross cum shot down from under his cross-bar. Half Time: Formartine United 0 Fraserburgh 0 The second half was little different with Formartine pressure possibly more intense and prolonged. There was no doubt that they were bossing things but with Leask in good form in the visiting goal and McBride, Cowie and Christie keeping the home strikers at bay Formartine had little option but to keep hammering away until something gave. The problem was that with such attention to attack the risk of a breakaway goal from Broch was always on the cards. The nearest to success in this way came on the hour mark when a break down the left initiated by an interchange between Chalmers and West set up Noble to whip the ball low and hard to the back post taking out Formartine defenders in the process. Davidson was there for it but was unable to make the ball complete the single revolution it needed to cross the line. The delay was just enough for home defenders to scramble the ball to safety. Little more than a minute later, Leask again saved the Buchan bacon after a corner by Lawson from the right had entered a second phase and the ball reached McKeown lingering craftily at the front left corner of the box. Taking very careful aim before drilling it through a penalty area as congested as the Haudagain at 8-15 of a Monday morning, his shot looked net-bound all the way until a feline leap from Leask allowed him to get a paw to the ball and touch it away for another corner. One sided although proceedings were by now, the absence of a goal and the sheer cussedness of the Brochers still spelled danger for Formartine. One goal looked like being enough but the problem of how to get it remained until after manager Hunter decided to play his trump card by introducing Cammy Keith for Neil Gauld in the 65 th minute. Initially it looked like Cammy van Persie was going to charge around the park to little avail. To begin with he looked to be more than adequately contained by Broch defenders and posed little goal threat. That is, however, precisely when he is at his most dangerous. A prolonged siege of the visitors goal area in the 88 th minute looked like being a last forlorn shake of the dice until Keith did what he does best and changing his run back from far post to near got just enough onto the ball to squeeze it into the net an inch or two inside the upright. Formartine took the ball to the flanks and by and large managed to hold it there. When Fraserburgh did gain possession United were onto them in a flash to close down harry and harass them until they got the ball back. There was little doubt that they could hold onto the lead until the final whistle and they did just that. This was an excellent game between two teams that knew a lot about each other but still made for compelling viewing from the stands. The young Dons took the lead on 18 minutes from Kalvin Orsi after Edward Flinn had produced a fine save to deny Frank Ross from a free kick. Orsi then doubled the Dons lead from 25 yards curling a shot into the top corner. Flinn then produced a brilliant save from Orsi s penalty kick to deny the striker a hat-trick and the Broch shocked their SPFL opponents on 40 minutes when Bruce Mair fired home from six yards out. The Broch went in at half time deservedly only one goal behind. The Dons came out of the traps fast in the second half with Joe Nuttall thumping a shot against the post and having another effort ruled out for a push. Flinn then thwarted Ross as the Dons piled on the pressure. Jamie Henry finally ended the Broch s resistance on 57 minutes before Orsi completed his hat-trick on the hour. Andy Youngson made it 5-1 four minutes later and Nuttall completed the scoring in the last minute. The scoreline was harsh on the young Broch team who had put a lot into the match. Next up was a visit from Aberdeen University in the Aberdeenshire League on Monday 21 st September. Despite a late arrival at the Bellslea the Uni boys started well and opened the scoring on 13 minutes after a mistake in the home defence. The young Broch who had Jamie Masson playing as a trialist as well as Dean Cowie and Courtney Cooper getting some match practice gradually came into the game with the former Peterhead man going close before Adam Cross also tried his luck from 25 yards out. The equaliser arrived on 35 minutes when Calum Reid and Ben Hastie combined on the right and the full back s cross was turned into his own net by a Uni defender. The Broch started the second half with a bang with Dean Cowie firing the home side ahead on 47 minutes and Jamie Masson making it 3-1 on 50 minutes with a Cantona-esque chip over the visiting keeper. Cammy Buchan hammered a free kick off the bar on 60 minutes before Adam Cross rounded off the scoring with a low drive from 12 yards out on 73 minutes.
