1 ONE BIG FAMILY The Turner Family. Dad Stevie regularly takes tips from the boys on how to find the back of the net. As is common in any football club, brothers tend to play at the same club. Dad s also tend to coach at the club where their son or daughter plays. And on the very rare occasion, dad s also play at the same club as their daughters or sons (as is the case with the Turner family above). This month, we thought we would take a look at our members in more detail to see how many relations we actually do have. After all, the bedrock of Lurgan Town is based on family given that the two founding members (Brian Gordon and Junior Mercer) established the club to give their sons a place to play football. Coincidently, those two men s sons are still involved with the club (Paul Mercer as Academy coach, Stuart Gordon as club treasurer and Scott Gordon as senior player). 2 NEWS IN BRIEF CURTIS VISITS UGANDA Curtis Cassells visited Uganda with the youth group Collective in July 2014 for two weeks. Collective is a youth group associated to Emmanuel church, Lurgan. During their time there, they ran a lot of kids clubs in Source of Light Primary School. This is a school that Emmanuel has a link with. They also played a lot of football with the kids in their free time. It wasn't all fun and games and Curtis even got his hands dirty by helping to build a fence around the school. Curtis also had a chance to visit Light for All Secondary School which was built by the church and again played games and more football with the older kids. ACADEMY GET NEW GEAR The players of the Academy received new gear this month. New players got a brand new kit with their very on squad number and name on the back. Players that have been with the club for more than one season received a new rain top. The boys will be able to wear their new gear at training on Friday nights and on Saturday match days. #hots LEADING GOALSCORERS Every Saturday we record the goalscorers from every game from U13 up to the Seniors. 4 100 CLUB Congratulations to senior players Aaron Parks (top left) and Adam Stewart (bottom right) on making their 100th start for the senior section. Aaron has been a member of the club from U10 and made his debut for the 1st Team in 2011 as a sub against Camlough Rovers in a 2-0 league defeat. It wasn't until the 2011/12 season that Parksy made the right back position his own. That year he made 24 starts for the 1st Team and 1 appearance for the 2nd Team. The 19 year old is great at reading the game and loves to get forward a every opportunity from full back. He is equally comfortable at centre half and doesn't shirk his responsibilities in the tackle or in the air. In 2012/13 his impressive form continued with 31 starts and 1 sub appearance for the 1sts and 2 starts for the reserves. He backed this up with 30 starts and 1 sub appearance for the 1st Team in 2013/14 and even chipped in with 3 goals along the way. To date, this season, he has made 13 starts for the 1st Team and that lucrative 100 start came in a 4-0 away defeat to Valley Rangers on 28th September Already Parksy has four club awards to his name (shown below). Adam (or Sanjay as he his affectionately known to the guys in the seniors) made his debut in 2010 in a pre season friendly defeat against Silverwood Utd. The 26 year old made his competitive debut in a 2-0 home win in the league against Broomhill. His debut season was marked by a serious ankle injury, but Adam made 14 starts and 2 sub appearances for the 1st Team and 8 starts and 1 sub appearance for the reserves. In the 2011/12 season the tricky midfielder made 21 starts for the 1st Team and 4 for the reserves. Once again injury struck and limited Sanj to just 12 starts in the 2012/13 season. He came back stronger than ever, however, and was named 1st Team captain at the beginning of the 2013/14 season. He repaid the faith given by manager Timmy Lennon with an impressive 30 appearances for the 1st Team and an incredible 5 goals in 3 games for the reserves. Adam is a player that leads by example. He optimises the club motto of heart on the sleeve. Sometimes his over zealous attitude leads to the odd yellow and red card, but if you take that away from his game, he wouldn't be the same player. On Saturday 11th October 2014 he made his 100th start for the seniors against Markethill Swifts in a 3-2 defeat. 5 UEL WOOLSEY VISITS PORTUGAL As part of the IFA Youth Certificate course I attended during the summer, the participants where offered a chance to partake in a study visit to a foreign country to observe coaching. This year the visit was to the Algarve in Portugal from Sat 13 th Fri 19 th September. All costs relating to flights, accommodation and most meals were paid for through the Irish FA s Erasmus Funding Project. Our group was made up of coaches from grassroots level up to U17 level and represented clubs from all over the Northern Ireland. During the week we attended matches and training sessions from grassroots up to teams playing in the Portuguese 2 nd Division. Training sessions at the grassroots ages from 5 to 12 years that we observed were run by the Benfica & Porto regional academies and the kids taking part varied in skill level. Drills & games being coached were nothing new as I have seen them used by or own teams in the academy, however the kids were training up to three times per week with SSG s (small sided games) at the weekend. After the sessions we were able to ask the coaches a few questions and they said the main aim was to get as many boys & girls playing the game and to identify any talented/gifted players and monitor their progress as they developed. When observing the 13 to 16 years age group the sessions/matches were of regional clubs in the Algarve with academy structures. Again the drills/games being coached were nothing new but the kids were training 3 times a week plus a match, one club was even training 4 times a week and in the preseason before school started back they were training 6 times a week with 2 sessions being in the pool. Each team had over 20 players. After the sessions we talked with the coaches and each made it clear that winning the match was high on the priority list. We asked about the kids that don t play the matches and we were told it is up to them to fight for their place and if they were not happy could leave, there is not as many youth leagues of different talent levels in the region so basically they have nowhere else to go. The most talented players were being selected for regional development squads and some even travelling regularly to Porto, Benfica & Sporting Lisbon main academies. We got to visit three Portuguese 2 nd division clubs to watch their matches and training sessions. Training sessions consisted of mostly a warm up, few technical drills with the main percentage of the session based on tactical training in game situations. Each club had no official academy but they were loosely linked with local regional teams that do have, like the ones we visited. Players from the regional teams would be invited to train with the 2 nd division club squads in the hope of signing. Talking with the coaches winning was the main objective and not youth development. In summary I feel that the coaching we are providing to our younger players is of the same style and quality, however the younger players in Portugal are training more often. I asked one of the youth coaches what other sports the kids play and he replied: There 1 st sport is football, there 2 nd sport is football and there 3 rd sport is football. Regarding the older teens up to senior level the main difference observed was that they worked more on tactical practice in match type sessions. This is something I would like to coach more with our U17s as of up to now their training has mostly consisted of technical drills. However to do this teams do need a full pitch to work on which is not always possible and also teams need to have a big squad. Uel Woolsey (far right) during his coaching study visit to Portugal with IFA.

6 MARTIN S MEMOIRS GAFFERS I played for Lurgan town for 25 years, give or take a year... I think that's probably more than the average age of the current first team squad. Over the years Ive had a number of managers, all the way back to under 10 with Jackie Robinson and under 11 with Maurice Houston but 4 in particular stand out. Under 16 - Brian Houston, Under 18 - Sir Billy Rainey then Brian Titch Clarke, Seniors - Nigel McCann (featuring Darwin Minter Murray). Brian Houston is a club stalwart. One of the nicest men I ever met and genuine to boot. He did a lot for me at the club. He encouraged me to be vocal on the pitch, he listened to ideas (I was 16 and thought I knew everything...little has changed), even when he probably thought they were rubbish and he encouraged players to express themselves on the pitch. I have a ton of respect for Brian who, when tensions were high around the land, he put himself out to collect me each night for training and then drive through Taghnevan to collect me on a Saturday morning, which at the time was probably an uncomfortable place to be. Some things you just don't take for granted or forget. Billy Rainey. Sir Billy had his critics. The man didn't ask for 100% on the pitch, he demanded it. His training was definitely old school but it was (before I continue...yes back in the day I did train) tough..effective but brutal. All those of an age remember Billy. The ancient red ford escort that he drove, the many many one liners: The balls round to go round, Wide men win matches, I wasn't always this size you know, I ll get my rusty bike and my all time favourite - Picture a young Iain Crooks with the ball at his feet - Crooksy...go like a racehorse really???? If you were caught not listening at training you got pushups. That was just his way. Loads of other stories, but space is limited!! Brian Titch Clarke. Personally I think the best of the bunch. Brian struck up great relationships with his players, I think because he still played a bit himself. His training was also old school but with a lot more banter thrown in. Training was never a chore (yes I still trained even then). Titch would listen to you. He would listen to what you had to say, your ideas, your criticisms. Then he would tell you that you were wrong and we d do it his way because he was rig. And he was. Titch was the first manager I played under with 3 centre backs. It made my job so much easier, it was genius...a spare defender to shout at!!!! BRILLIANT. It worked a treat. He would go through each player during his team talk, he would specifically tell you what he expected of you and how you would contribute to the overall plan. You always knew what Titch expected from you. He trusted you to do what was required and in turn we trusted him. He lead us to maybe 5 cup finals...we won a few. They are a few of the football trophies I have to show for all my efforts. I will always thank him for that. A true gent and for me...a true Lurgan Town Legend...and a talented gammy left foot. He is responsible for me enjoying my time at Next up - Niggsy McCann and that team the club.

7 WAGs CORNER... KATHRYN LINDSAY The second WAG to feature in Winning Isn t Everything is Kathryn Lindsay. The soon to be Mrs Greenaway lifted the lid on the legend that is Geoff Greenaway. Club captain and manager of the U16s there is no other man with as many appearances for Lurgan Town FC as this guy. But what is he really like away from football?? WIE: How long have you been dating / married? KL: Geoff and I have been together about 7 years now (maybe a wee bit more actually). We are getting married on 7th November. God help him he has the heart of a lion marrying me! He probably feels like he s marrying all 4 Lindsay sisters though they torture him. He s a wee legend puts up with a lot from the 4 ladies in his life! WIE: Does Geoff have a pre match meal? KL: Since I like a lie in on a Saturday and I m not a great chef (I can t be arsed), he heads down to GEMs (his Mum s wee coffee shop in Union Street). He gets the same thing every weekend a grilled breakfast. No fried food for him, he likes to maintain his slim physique. WIE: Does he have any superstitions before a game? KL: I don t think so to be honest. The only thing I have noticed is that he doesn t like it if his Lurgan Town towel isn t clean and ready for a Saturday that could be one actually! Other than that I haven t a baldy. WIE: What's he like after a game? KL: Depends on the result lol. If the teams lose he is usually quite quiet! As you probably all know Geoff is a man of few words. He never gives much away but you can tell deep down he s gutted. On the other hand if he comes home and you can smell beer off him that s usually a good sign. WIE: What would he say is his best feature? KL: Mmmm sometimes when he gets out of the shower he will prance and dance around in his towel wiggling and say look at maaa bodaaaayyyy in a Scottish accent (no idea why he uses a Scottish accent like but sure). Then he will flex his guns and look proud lol. He s such a wee creep. I think he thinks he has the whole package. (WIE: Maybe its reference to the Austin Powers movie???) WIE: What would you say his best feature is? KL: I would say his wee smile is his best feature. When he flashes them gnashers it s hard to be cross at him for leaving his dirty threads all over the bedroom floor or whipping off his begs in the kitchen and then a million of them wee black balls (from the 3G pitch) fall all over the floor. That really grinds my gears. WIE: What would he say he is best at at football? KL: I would say he thinks he is best at coaching and helping the younger teams. I think that s what he enjoys most. I suppose since he s soon going to be mid 30 s he may be thinking its time to hang up the boots and concentrate on that hehe. Plus he will have aged a good bit after a few months of married life with me he won t have time to train because he will be too busy fulfilling husbandly duties - he will have grey hair galore! (WIE: At the rate he s going more likely to be bald). WIE: At the club, Geoff is known as "Skipp" to the boys. Do you have any nicknames for him? KL: I have loads for Geoff. He s is gonna kill me! I ll only give you a few. Geoff wont want me ruining his rep with the lads. Cindy I don t know the reason for this one, its just kinda stuck and I think its cute! And Bug because he looks like a cute wee bug in his specks. I am dead meat!! Lol. WIE: Growing up boys always liked to be a certain footballer in the playground. Who would Skipp say he would like to have been growing up? KL: Flip me that s a hard one mainly because I only know about 4 footballers. I am going to go with David Healy. I could be wrong but he has always loved Northern Ireland as a team and has travelled all over the world supporting them. I don t know if David Healy was even playing when Geoff was young haha, but Ill go with that. WIE: Geoff has never played for another club. He has dedicated his whole football life to Lurgan Town. Why do you think this is? KL: That s just Geoff. He is a loyal guy through and through and I think in his eyes Lurgan Town is where his heart lies. He loves Geoff Greenaway Stats (since 2004) Years With Club - 21 Senior Appearances st Team Appearances (28 sub) 1st Team Goals - 4 2nd Team Appearances - 27 (4 sub) 2nd Team Goals - 1 Club Awards - 1st Team Player of Year (2012/13), 1st Team Player of Year (2010/11), 1st Team Players Player of Year (2010/11), 1st Team Most Improved Player (2002/03), 1st Team Most Improved Player (2000/01), U18 Player of Year (1999/00), U16 Player of Year (1998/99), U16 Clubman (1997/98). everything about the club and I think he would do anything for it and his friends there. It is more that just a club to him it s a big group of mates who he s comfortable with and who he enjoys spending time with. I think sometimes he loves you lot more than me. WIE: A lot of wives / girlfriends might give off that their men spend so much time involved with football. What's your take on it? KL: To be honest I don t mind. I have never know him any other way. I wouldn t give off as I know how much he loves it. He doesn t complain about the amount of time I spend with wine so I just let him get on with it. I ll maybe have to lay down the law a bit though if we are lucky enough to have mini Skipps running around. Who s in next month s newsletter? Here s a few clues... It s someone not too far from here. She loves the colours and, surprisingly, was happy enough to ditch the dirt on her young man. Make no mistake, we have another clinker WAGs corner lined up for November s issue of Winning Isn t Everything.

Rumour has it Ross was exhausted from the work the senior section where giving him. Seriously though, we wish him all the best in his permanent job in Glasgow, Scotland. Taking over from Ross is Christine Russell. WIE caught up with her to ask a few questions about her job as a physio. WIE: Where did you study and how long have you been a physio? CR: I studied in the University of Ulster, Jordanstown and graduated in July 2014 with a first class honours degree WIE: What qualifications do you need to have in order to be a physiotherapist? CR: You need a degree in physiotherapy to be a physio, there are no other courses you can do to get the qualification. You also need to be a member of the chartered society of physiotherapy to call yourself a chartered physiotherapist and have to be a member of the HCPC to be able to practise. WIE: What s the worst injury you have ever seen? CR: The most serious musculoskeletal injury I've worked with was a patallectomy (a surgery which involves the removal of the kneecap, I have also helped to rehab a few patients with leg amputations. WIE: What is the most common injury that you have to deal with? CR: The most common musculoskeletal injury I have seen is sprained ankles and lower back pain. WIE: Do you have a specialist area? Or an injury that you particularly like to deal with? CR: I am particularly interested in stroke rehabilitation but as it is so specialised it is normally a field you go into after many years. WIE: Do you like football? What is your favourite team? CR: My dad would kill me if I didn't say Glenavon here as I was brought there every Saturday as a child to watch. Christine is available on Monday nights at the Arena from 6.30pm to 9pm. She will assess players from all age groups on a first come basis. Cost is 5 p e r session which must be paid on the night.

12 MOVEMBER 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives. Quite frankly that is too man guys. This year alone 40,000+ men will be diagnosed in the UK. Something needs to be done about it. This is where Movember comes in to play. For those not familiar with the concept. Men (and some women) use the month of November to grow moustaches - like Phil McKinley, Chris Kelly, Adam Stewart and Scott Gordon did back in In return people donate to the cause. Why? For one it looks ridiculous on most men and two the money goes towards research in to finding a cure for prostate and testicular cancer. Lurgan Town Seniors and Coaches are taking part this year. All you need to do is donate (and laugh if you want). Our donation page can be found here: Around 2,220 men where diagnosed with testicular cancer in the UK in 2011 Want to advertise here? 20 per issue info@lurgantownfc.com
