STRENGTH WITH THE KIDS Above: U16 captain Feidhlim McDonald Above: Tiarnan Judge (back right), Sidney Tavares (front right), Dylan Hoy (back centre) and Matthew Hosty (fron right of ball) Back in 1996, the club decided to start a senior section. Prior to this Lurgan Town had been solely for junior players. There was a slight issue, however. What happens when those same junior players reach U18 level? Most had no desire to leave the club but found that they had to because they had nowhere else to play. Fast forward to 2015 and its clear to see the benefits. Graduates from the junior section to the senior section goes well into the hundreds. Of the current 47 man senior squad no fewer than 32 players have came through the youth set up. Players like Geoff Greenaway, the Cousins brothers Kyle, Ryan and Gareth, Jamie Devlin, Robbie Redpath, Robin Carson, Alan Stokes, Andrew Heaney, Matthew Johnston and Steven Heasley to name a few. Now add to this list, five fantastic protégés in the form of U16 captain Feidhlim McDonald, U17 captain Tiarnan Judge, Sidney Tavares, Dylan Hoy and Matthew Hosty and there is proof that Lurgan Town has strength with the kids. Proof also that Lurgan Town promotes from within. If you are good enough you will play. Age does not matter. Second team manager Chris Kelly has this to say: Since the New Year we made the decision to start blooding some of the club s younger talent after watching several of their youth games. Five lads so far have stepped up and haven't looked back. Their attitudes are second to none, and their talent has some of the more senior players singing their praises. The step up has been very much taken in their stride. The aim is to continue their progression and hopefully hand more young players their senior debuts. Copyright Lurgan Town FC 2015

NEWS IN BRIEF MASTERS FOOTBALL CONTINUING ON THURSDAYS This is a Football based programme hosted by Lurgan Town FC in partnership with the IFA and CBC Sports Development Team. The aim is to encourage participation in some fun based football activities while having the opportunity to receive information surrounding men s health. The 'training' sessions are held on Thursday nights from 7pm to 8pm on the 9-aside 3G pitch. It is open to any players who are 35+ and not currently involved with another team (ie not playing football regularly on a Saturday). 2 per session with free tea and coffee in the clubhouse from 8pm to 8.30pm SURELY THAT S A FACE FOR THE RADIO??? It s not every day that you turn the TV on and happen to see one of your teammates. But that s exactly what happened on Thursday 19th February on BBC 1 Northern Ireland. Scott McBride (senior player and U16 coach) and Dwayne Kerr (Mr Northern Ireland and former player) found themselves on The Link, a 45 minute quiz show. By the looks of the photo, they where doing quite well. But alas they didn't take any money home. They did however get through to the second round before their knowledge ran out. Don t worry if you missed the episode, you can watch it on the BBC iplayer - Season 2, Episode 19. ACADEMY COACHES NEEDED Due to the growing numbers attending the clubs Academy section on Friday nights we are looking for new coaches to help out. If your interested and would like more info please leave a message or contact Head Coach Robert Davidson on or Club Secretary Philip McKinley on DON S DID YOU KNOW QUESTION Question from last month s edition. How many items does a referee need before a game can kick off? Minimum 6: ball, whistle, cards, watch, pencil, coin. A NEW BRAND OF COACHING On Wednesday nights before training, the Mid Ulster Under 14 squad (below) always have a half hour group discussion on the previous game, the next game and how that nights training will be set out to address both those games. Their coaches believe this has improved their tactical awareness and is educating them in football knowledge. TAKING IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL The U16s (above) recently attended the Sports Training Academy for extra fitness training. I notice that only Geoff Greenaway (front right) of the coaches where taking part in the session. WING ON BOARD The club would like to welcome Chirs Wing to the coaching set up. Winger will be helping Gareth Maxwell with the Lisburn League U13 side. He is a former player of Lugan Town and Dollingstown and current player of Hill Street FC. Chris will bring a wealth of knowledge to the young players and is a welcome addition to the side.

SIMON DOES HAIR Town striker Simon Freeburn has taken the plunge into self employment. WIE caught up with him to find out what it was like to be the proprietor of Simon Does Hair ( WIE: How long have you been doing hair? SDH: I ve been a hairdresser for just over 2 years now. I know that sounds like a short time but I have worked hard to build my skills up to a very professional level in a short space of time. WIE: Are you self taught or a college boy? SDH: I went to Lisburn SRC to study barbering and then additional training in the HairTech Salon in Portadown. It allowed me to learn loads of different techniques and create a way to cut hair that works for the styles I want to achieve. WIE: When did SDH open to the public? SDH: We opened our doors on 16th February. WIE: What made you make the step from working from home to setting up your own place? SDH: I started off barbering at home as a hobby but the demand for lads wanting their hair cut created an opportunity to turn this into a career. WIE: How s the response since you opened the doors? SDH: The response from the public has been amazing. I ve been very busy from the very first day. I take 100% care and attention to every customer and people appreciate that. I am already thinking of getting other barbers to join my team. WIE: So is this you finished with football? SDH: I miss football already. Once I get on my feet I will try to get back into coaching. I have all my badges and it would be a OPENING HOURS PRICE LIST Monday - Closed 7 Cut & Style Tuesday - 9 to 6 6 Student, OAP & Kids Wednesday - 9 to 6 Cut and Style Thursday - 12 to 9 2 Wash Friday - 12 to 9 2 Beard Trim Saturday - 9 to 6 Sunday - Closed Tel: great way of staying involved. Lurgan Town is an amazing club to be part of. All the lads are a pleasure to be around and there s a great buzz about the place. One of the best coaching set ups in Northern Ireland in my opinion. 4 Ten fascinating football "did you knows" DON S DID YOU KNOW?... TEN TOP FACTS 1. The Premier League trophy is silver but Arsenal were awarded a gold trophy after winning the title in recognition of going the league campaign unbeaten. The "Invincible's" record being 26 wins, 12 draws, 0 defeats 2. Chelsea's Gianfranco Zola is the only player to have been sent of in the World Cup Finals... On his birthday (thanks for the card Ref!) 3. Cowdenbeath shipped 10 goals the other weekend, but the highest number of goals scored in in a single half in senior football occurred in 1954 when Motherwell and Dumbarton played out a 6-6 draw with Motherwell leading 6-4 at the break. 4. The great Pele is youngest ever World Cup winner at 17 years and 249 days when Brazil lifted the old Jules Rimet trophy in At the other end of the age range is Legendary Italian Goalkeeper Dino Zoff who captained his country to their triumph in 1982 at 40 years and 133 days. Bonus fact; Pele is also credited with first using the term "the beautiful game" 5. Algeria, Ghana, South Korea and Saudi Arabia all have unbeaten records against England. 6. Finnish hero Jari Litmanen is the only footballer to play internationally in four different decades. He won his first cap in 1989 and last before retiring in 2010, winning a national record 137 caps in between. 7. Sunderland did it in 1979, Villa did it in Who did it in 1981? Confused? It was Trevor Brooking. They all scored the winning goal in the respective FA cup finals, Alan Sunderland for Arsenal, Ricky Villa for Spurs and Brooking for West Ham 8. Robbie Earnshaw can boast scoring a hat trick at top flight level in the league, league cup, FA cup and International level for Wales 9. While Robbie Fowler holds the record for the fastest hat trick in the Premier League at 4 mins 33 secs when he netted for Liverpool v Arsenal in 1994, he's a bit of a slouch compared to James Hayter who came on as a substitute for AFC Bournemouth against Wrexham in Feb 2004 and claimed the match ball with 3 goals in 140 seconds! 10. Miguel Munoz, Giovanni Trapatonni, Johan Cruyff, Carlo Ancelotti, Frank Rijkaard and Josep Guardiola are the only people to have won the European Cup or Champions League as both player and coach..... More men have walked on the moon!

THE WAIT IS OVER WELL NEARLY At the beginning of the month the diggers moved in to clear the foundations for the new modular clubhouse building. Little did we know that a few weeks later it would here. Work it expected to continue on the side of the club for the next number of weeks and hopefully by the end of March we will be ready to move in. On first impressions it looks fantastic. Check out the photos below:

MARTIN S MEMOIRS... MY ALL TIME XI THE BACK 5 I spent about 20 odd years playing for Lurgan Town. In that era I ve played with some good players and some not so good ones! From 1990 to 2013 I think I would be fairly well equipped certainly to pick my best 11. Now this is clearly from my perspective and my opinion. I d have a go at picking my best coach too but Il leave that to the end and for this month concentrate on the back 5. GOALKEEPER Im not gonna put myself in goal even though I have a massive ego. There weren't too many about when I was playing. So the nominations are: Willie McCullough - Brought to the club my Nigel McCann and I was out. Not the tallest but agile. I only ever saw him at training as I left shortly after to go to Dollingstown. David Graham - Good shot stopper, eccentric at times. saw him get sent off in bizarre fashion one day. Shotgun of a throw though. I envied that. Sometimes more power than control lol. Impressive nonetheless. Good round nice guy who I had a lot of time for even as a rival. RIGHT BACK I played with many defenders over the years. Trying to remember back at my age isn't easy. More from the under 18s up. The right back nominations are: Niall Heaney - I played a lot of Gaelic Football with Niall. He was super fit. One of the fittest players I ve ever played along side. He wasn't the tallest but he was agile and very aggressive. Good on the ball, good range of passing and heavy in the tackle. He loved to wind up opponents, constantly. Playing against him, I definitely would have hit him a dig. Saw him one day do the best step over I ever saw.beat 3 men with it. Roderick McMurray - We called Rodders the Quiet Man. He only ever got vocal on the pitch when he was angry, and he had to be very angry. He had such silky skills for a fullback. He was fond of mazy runs up the wing and could take players on and beat them more than once. He wasn't the most aggressive, Mr nice guy. Super reliable and forced Niall Heaney if I remember correctly to left back. Jonny Hoey - Jonny probably refers to himself more as a midfielder. Niggsy (Nigel McCann) put him in at right back and for me he was outstanding. I don't think he liked playing there which probably held him back but he was so comfortable on the ball and rarely wasted it. Preferred going forward to defending as was his nature. Good talker and organiser. Geoff Greenaway - Where do you start. Pacey, fit, a great reader of the game. Aggressive, agile, ruthless - saw him perform a rugby tackle at the end of extra time at Dungannon Swifts. A leader of men, not often through his vocal or organisation but in his actions and his never say die attitude. Mr Lurgan Town. Was Geoff a rightback or a centreback - does it matter? He was possibly the best at both. Geoff takes the spot. CENTRE BACKS Lots of these over the years - Mark Nesbitt, Randal Roderick, Ryan McNicholl, Greig Savage, Ian Crooks, Tim Dillon, Stephen Heasley, Mark Savage, Glen Waddell, Cheeser, Ritchie McCorry. The nominations are: Greig Bap Savage - Not the quickest, never was..but then didn't need to be. He wasn't the tallest.didn't need to be. Not the greatest marker.didn't need to be. I ve never seen a player read a game like Bap Savage he made it look so easy. He was a quality tackler preferred to play the ball out from the back due to his feather foot. As a captain I d have went through a brick wall for him and a super organiser. Probably the best player I ever played alongside. Stephen Heasley - Again like Jonny Hoey, he would probably consider himself a midfielder but when we first played in the same side he was a centre back. Super aggressive, ate raw shin on a Saturday morning. Not the tallest or broadest but strong in general and excellent in the air as often in the opposition box as his own. As he could play in midfield he was more than comfortable on the ball. Strong and aggressive in the tackle, sometimes on occasion overly aggressive calmed down a little as he got older! You always knew you would get 100% from Dixie and if you weren't giving him the level of performance he expected.you soon knew about it.

Mark Savage - Played the majority of his football at Irish league level so it speaks volumes as he probably had the most ability out of all the centrebacks I played with. Super calm under pressure. Tall and graceful at intermediate level. Always looked to have another gear. Composed on and off the ball. A quality player. Though I only had a season and a half playing in behind him. Glenn Waddell - A lot like Bap savage in his style of play. A sweeper who always seemed to have time on the ball. Great range of passing and such a polished tackler. Always looked at ease and never panicked. Good talker. Lack of height but read the game so well that it wasn't a major problem. Like Mark Savage, played a lot of Irish league and I probably didn't get to see the best of him at Lurgan Town. Tim Dillon - Tim was a heart on the sleeve kinda guy. He was tall and strong and tackled very hard. I wouldn't have liked him marking me to be fair. very good in the air and could play a bit on the ground. Comfortable with the ball going forward and a threat on corners. Tim s biggest flaw was that he got caught up on the moment and didn't listen. Reliable at the best of times and an all round decent guy and player. Cheeser - Clearly a nickname, and for the life of me I cant remember his second name. First name Ryan. Very like Bap Savage in that he was a quality reader of the game. Fantastic communicator and uber comfortable on the ball. Average in height but good in the air and had a certain arrogance about the way he played. Was quick off the mark and fantastic at timing the tackle. Good set piece taker as well which was unusual for a centreback / sweeper. Actually name just came to me. Ryan Fee. I knew it was in there somewhere. Geoff Greenaway (right) - As before. MARTIN S MEMOIRS... MY ALL TIME XI THE BACK 5 LEFT BACK I have played in teams where fullbacks were often more wingbacks which brings a different dimension. As this is a 442 formation the nominations are: Keith Lutton - Keith was at left back all through my younger years from u10 up. Quiet lad. Shy. Loved his football and always my outlet for goal kicks. He had a longer range of passing as he got older and wasn't given proper credit for it. Reliable player, and could be aggressive if he was suitably wound up. Scott Gordon - Got to play alongside Scott for a number of years and probably in the best Lurgan Town team though the Intermediate times. Obvious quality given his experience in the big time. When he first came back from England he was quite quick and wore an alice band. Ridiculously good on the ball and a fantastic striker of the dead ball. Could hit a penalty, across the ball. Great hang time in the air and when fit he had a good engine (pre 2011 lol). Liked to wander at times and had to consistently reign him in but had an ability to read the game that helped him play at ease.. tended to whinge as much as me!!!! Niall Heaney - As before MARTIN RIGGS MURTAGH - ALL TIME LURGAN TOWN XI The Back 5 GK DAVID D-BALL GRAHAM RB CB CB LB GEOFF GREENAWAY GREIG BAP SAVAGE RYAN CHEESER FEE SCOTT GORDON WIE: Come back next week as Marty takes a look at the engine room of the team the midfield. Who will he pick to be part of his all time Lurgan Town XI? Already I cant wait to find out. For the record, in the role of goalkeeper you could easily slot Marty in to this position. There is no doubt that he is a Lurgan Town legend having played at every age group for the club. Rarely do you find a keeper that is so commanding and with a will to win as great as Marty. Rarely made a mistake and if you weren't pulling your weight he soon let you know. For me it s a toss up between him and Davy Graham and I would just give Marty the edge. But then this isn't the WIE all time XI. This is Marty s. See you back here next week.

WAGs CORNER WENDY BEATTIE You thought this feature had gone away didn't you. Haha no chance. It s back by popular demand. Wendy Beattie took time out of her busy schedule as a an Accounts Assistant with CHC Group Ltd to dish the dirt on her new hubby Steven Beattie (U16 and 2nd Team assistant manager). As with the previous WAGs, Wendy was all to happy to give us an insight to the man we call Beatts. WIE: How long have you been dating / married? WB: We have been together almost 9 years and married for 6 months. The best 9 years of his life (or so he tells me anyway!) WIE: Does Steven have a pre match meal? WB: Normally porridge for the U16s and bacon & eggs for 2nds. Or whatever I have ready for the quick turnaround between games, he'd be starving without me! WIE: Does he have any superstitions before a game? WB: Not that I know of but he does like to get up really early so he has time for food and to chill before he sets off. (Meanwhile I'm enjoying my weekend lie in) WIE: What's he like after a game? WB: Depends on the result!! Normally happy as long as the team have put up a good fight. Always plenty of post-match analysis on what's app. WIE: He recently returned back to Lurgan Town after being away for a few years. What do you think brought him back? WB: I would say More opportunities for development. And a chance to go back to where his footballing days started. WIE: What would he say is his best feature? WB: Steven is very modest so he would probably say his sense of humour. WIE: What would you say his best feature is? WB: I would have to say his derrière and his (George Clooney) hair. As well as his sense of humour and caring nature. WIE: What would he say he is best at at football? WB: I don't really know much about Steven playing football. but I do know that he likes to have a good playlist for the pre-match tunes (WIE: This is debatable) WIE: Do you have any nicknames for him? WB: Chicken lol WIE: Football is just one of his loves. He has a few others. What order do you think he would put these in. Football, Darts, Motor Sports, Beer, You. WB: 1. Me (of course!), 2. Football, 3. Beer, 4. Motorsports, 5. Darts His thoughts on the number 1 are probably a lot different. WIE: Growing up boys always liked to be a certain footballer in the playground. Who would Steve say he would like to have been growing up? WB: Im not too sure, maybe ally McCoist. I do know he was a fan of WWF in his younger years and liked to dress up as Bret "the hitman" Hart. WIE: A lot of wives might give off that their men spend so much time involved with football. What's your take on it? WB: I don't mind as it gives me a chance to catch up on my soaps while he's out training in the wind rain and sometimes snow! When I hear "we have a free week" I momentarily think oh happy days. Then I realise he'll go and watch the 1sts play, or any other match that's on to avoid having a football free Saturday lol.

DO YOU REMEMBER? THE HAPPY BUS This is one for the older members in the club, but for all those too young to know, let me fill you in. In the early 1990s Lurgan Town had their very own mini bus - yes that s it pictured on the left. The Happy Bus as it was affectionately known brought the various age groups all over the province. There was one slight problem it wasn't the most reliable of things. More often than not it had broken down or simply wouldn't start and in the end the cost of maintaining it got too high and it had to go. I think I can recall it ended up on Maurice Houston s farm (far left) as a chicken house. WIE caught up with a few past and present members to get their memories on old faithful. Neil Radford - former youth team and senior player: Ah the Happy Bus. I wasn't playing this day, but it broke down one time on the way home from Orangefield and there were scenes. Scott Gordon - editor of WIE and current senior player: My experience on the Happy Bus was normally going to watch one of the older teams play (I m so young you see). Most of the time it was my brother Stuart, Ian Crooks, Mini Foster, Bap Savage and a few others on the bus. Win, lose or draw on the way home the songs always started and my favourite by far was the bouncey. Picture young men bouncing up and down on the seats, pretty much going mental (no seat belts back in those days) and the driver struggling to keep it on the road. Not a bit of wonder it was breaking down all the time. Can we bring it back again? Keith Lutton - committee member, former youth team and senior player: Not sure who was driving but I remember one Saturday morning on the way to Belfast for a Dundonald league match the bonnet opening and covering the front window to block the drivers view. Tim Lennon - former player and now 1st team manager I remember a young Maxi brining the U10s away for a trip and them cleaning him out in the amusements. The happy bus was full of happy times. Good craic had by all.
