ESSEX HEIGHTS PRIMARY SCHOOL EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS POLICY Excursins and incursins are seen as an integral part f the schl curriculum as they enable students t explre, extend and enrich their learning and their scial skills develpment, in a nn-schl setting. They cmplement, and are an imprtant aspect f the educatinal prgrams ffered at the schl. An excursin is defined as any activity beynd the schl grunds. An incursin is an activity that invlves schl visitrs wh prvide perfrmance, lessn r service fr students. This plicy shuld be read in cnjunctin with the Essex Heights Primary Schl Camps Plicy where applicable. AIMS T reinfrce, cmplement and extend the learning pprtunities beynd the classrm. T develp an understanding that learning is nt limited t schl and teachers, and that valuable and pwerful learning takes place in the real wrld r with ther peple and experiences. T prvide safe, secure learning experiences fr students in a venue external t the schl. T further develp scial skills such as cperatin, tlerance, cmmunicatin, individual and grup interactin. T further develp prblem slving and life survival skills. T extend students understanding f their physical and cultural envirnment. GUIDELINES FOR ACTION All excursins and incursins must be apprved by the Principal r his/her nminee. All excursins and incursins must cmply with Child Safe Standards. Staff wishing t rganise an excursin/incursin must cmplete an Excursin/Incursin prpsal frm (Appendices B and C) and ldge this fr apprval. The Principal r nminee(s) will cnsider the educatinal utcme f the excursin/incursin as well as the impact n the schl. The Principal r nminee(s) will ensure that all excursins/incursins, transprt arrangements, emergency prcedures and staffing cmply with Department f Educatin and Early Childhd Develpment (DET) guidelines. The crdinatr will ensure relevant details are entered n the daily planner. Once the excursin/incursin has been apprved, all relevant dcumentatin must be cmpleted by the Crdinatr and submitted. Fr excursins, an nline ntificatin f schl activity frm is cmpleted at least three weeks prir t the activity using the Student Activity Lcatr (SAL). EXPECTATIONS DET requirements and guidelines relating t preparatin and safety will be bserved in the cnduct f all excursins and incursins. The Principal r nminee will ensure that full recrds are maintained regarding the excursin/incursin. The Principal r nminee will ensure that adequate pre-excursin/pre-incursin planning and preparatin, including the preparatin f students, takes place. Satisfactry arrangements will be made t prvide cntinuus instructin fr the students remaining at the schl during the absence f staff accmpanying an excursin and fr thse students wh are nt participating in an incursin/excursin. All excursins and incursins will be attended by schl staff t ensure apprpriate supervisin f students at all times. In the event f an accident r emergency the teacher in charge will be respnsible fr the administratin f first aid, and will cntact parents as apprpriate. In the event that parents cannt be cntacted, the teacher in charge will fllw first aid and emergency plicies as set ut by Essex Heights Primary Schl. DET will nt cver any expense assciated with the cnduct f excursins/incursins. The schl may chse t subsidise sme excursins/incursins r sme students expenses. Prir t cnducting a camp r excursin, apprval f the Schl Cuncil r the Principal will be btained. Schl Cuncil must apprve vernight r adventure activities. Students and their parents/carers will be made aware that acceptable standards f behaviur in keeping with the Essex Heights schl values will be expected during an excursin/incursin. The emergency management prcess f the schl will extend t and incrprate all excursins/incursins. All DET requirements and guidelines that apply t the cnduct f excursins are als applicable t all verseas and interstate (dmestic) camps/excursins. PROGRAM Prir t cnducting a camp r excursin, DET requirements and guidelines relating t excursins, will be rigrusly bserved. Cnsideratin in planning will include: Adventure Activities Apprvals Student Preparatin and Behaviur Emergency and Risk Management including bushfires

In apprving an excursin /incursin, cnsideratin will include: the cntributin f the activity t the schl curriculum the adequacy f the planning, preparatin and rganisatin in relatin t the schl plicy and the guidelines and advice prvided by DET infrmatin prvided by cmmunity grups and rganisatins that specialise in the activity prpsed apprpriateness f the venue the prvisins made fr the safety and welfare f students and staff the experience and cmpetence f staff relevant t the activities being undertaken the adequacy f the student supervisin the high risk nature f sme activities emergency prcedures and safety measures staff-student ratis student experience Students nt attending an excursin/incursin will be placed in anther class and have an apprpriate learning prgram prvided by the class teacher. Prir t an excursin r incursin parents/carers are t be made aware that DET des nt prvide student accident cver and that they need t make their wn arrangements fr cver. Arrangements fr payments All effrts will be made nt t exclude students simply fr financial reasns. Parents experiencing financial difficulty, wh wish fr their children t attend an excursin/ incursin, are invited t discuss alternative arrangements with the Principal. Decisins relating t alternative payment arrangements will be made by the Business Manager in cnsultatin with the apprpriate staff, n an individual basis. All families will be given sufficient time t make payments fr excursins/incursins. Parents will be prvided with permissin frms and excursin/incursin infrmatin clearly stating payment finalisatin dates. Children whse payment has nt been finalised at least 24 hurs prir t the incursin/departure date will nt be allwed t attend unless alternative payment arrangements have been rganised with the Business Manager.

Office staff will be respnsible fr managing and mnitring the payments made by parents and will prvide rganising teachers with detailed recrds n a regular basis. Teacher Respnsibilities: A designated Teacher in Charge will crdinate each excursin/incursin. The Teacher in Charge must prvide the Frnt Office with a final student list as well as prviding a list t the Schl First Aid Officer. In the case where an excursin/incursin invlves a particular class r year level grup, the rganising teacher will ensure that there is an alternative prgram available fr thse students nt attending the excursin/incursin. All students must have returned a signed permissin nte and payment t be able t attend the excursin/incursin. Cpies f cmpleted permissin ntes and medical infrmatin must be carried by excursin staff at all times. The schl will prvide a first aid kit fr each excursin. The teacher in charge is respnsible fr cllecting these prir t leaving. The teacher in charge will cmmunicate the anticipated return time with the Frnt Office in the case where excursins are returning ut f schl hurs. Parents will be infrmed prir t students leaving fr the excursin, that they can phne the ffice t receive an updated anticipated return time r an SMS t parents will be generated. Parents may be invited t assist in the delivery f excursins/incursins. Parents will be ntified if their child is in danger f lsing the privilege t participate in an excursin/incursin due t inapprpriate behaviur at schl. The decisin t exclude a student will be made by the Principal and Assistant Principal, in cnsultatin with the rganising teacher. Bth the parent and the student will be infrmed f this decisin prir t the excursin/incursin. Disciplinary measures apply t student excursins cnsistent with the Schl s Student Engagement and Well Being Plicy and Restrative Practices apprach. In extreme cases the excursin staff, fllwing cnsultatin with and the apprval f the principal r their nminee, may determine that a student shuld return hme during an excursin. In such circumstances, the parent/carer will be advised f: the circumstance assciated with the decisin t send the student hme the time when the parents/carers may cllect their child frm the excursin the anticipated time that the student will arrive hme any csts assciated with the student s return which will be the respnsibility f the parents/carers. The schl s emergency prcedures d include the effects f an emergency n student supervisin in the event f excursin staff being required t assist injured students r t g fr help.

All excursin staff and, where apprpriate, the students will be familiar with the specific prcedures fr dealing with emergencies n each excursin. On days f extreme fire danger r ttal fire ban, the Principal r nminee may need t cancel an excursin at shrt ntice. Where an excursin is nt cancelled, special fire safety precautins will be implemented. In any event Risk Assessment dcumentatin must be cmpleted prir t apprval. See Appendix D. Excursin grups will be equipped with mbile telephnes and first aid kits t be used in emergency situatins. DUTY OF CARE Be aware that students are usually less cnstrained and mre prne t accident and injury than in a mre clsely supervised classrm. Be aware that an incursin with an external prvider des nt abslve supervisin duties f the teacher, including first aid duties. A teacher must be present at all times and remain the persn designated with duty f care respnsibilities. Staff supervisin will cmply with the ratis set ut in Department Guidelines. See Appendix A.
