The Cakes have dropped the first three games of this five-game series against the Iowa Cubs. The Cakes dropped nine of 16 meetings last year, including five of eight at Principal Park, and have not won the season series from the I-Cubs since 2013. New Orleans has dropped six of its last seven at Principal Park. YESTERDAY S NEWS Iowa Cubs drew a tenth inning bases loaded walk and walked off 5-4 winners on Sunday afternoon. The Cakes fell behind 4-0 early and fought back with a two run home run from Austin Dean in the fourth inning. Cristhian Adames tied the game with an eighth inning two run home run. New Orleans failed to score in the top of the tenth and Iowa managed to load the bases an score without the benefit of a hit. Cory Mazzoni pitched two scoreless innings for the win and Tyler Kinley suffered the loss in relief. New Orleans is now 3-4 in extra innings. ON THE HILL Tyler Cloyd is set to make his second start of the season this afternoon. He maded his Cakes debut last Tuesday in his hometown of Papillion against the Chasers. He allowed eight runs on 11 hits in five innings in the defeat. Cloyd has pitched five times for the Marlins this season, allowing 16 earned runs, 24 hits, and seven walks in 13.1 innings pitched. Cloyd made 14 starts in 19 games last season for Tacoma and was 1-1 with a 5.67 ERA. He also pitched for Seattle last season and has a MLB time with Philadelphia in 2012 and 13. This is his first appearance against the Iowa Cubs. MAY DAYS New Orleans boasts a.285 team batting average this month trailing only Albuquerque (.294), Salt Lake (.300) among PCL clubs. The Cakes had hit just.225 in April, the club s lowest over a full month since hitting.222 in May 2008, while the.290 mark would be the best over a full month since hitting.298 in July 2011. ARMS RACE Over the last ten games, the Baby Cakes pitching staff owns a 7.94 ERA (72 ER/81.2 IP). Cakes starting pitchers had a 2.25 ERA (45 ER/ 180.0 IP) over the previous 27 games and an opponents batting average of.205 (139x679). New Orleans starters had turned in a quality start 15 out of 17 games before their recent stretch which has produced two quality starts in the past ten contests (Trevor Richards last Sunday and Saturday night). BULLIED The New Orleans bullpen suffered its ninth blown save on Thursday, the most in the PCL, and has now permitted 48.9% of inherited baserunners (24x49) to score. The Baby Cakes have four defeats when leading after seven innings on the year (16-4) the most in the league. HOT SOUP Over his last 25 contests, dating to April 26, Eric Campbell is batting.407 (37x91), second in the PCL in that span to Fresno s J.D. Davis (.442). His.495 on-base percentage also ranks second while his 37 hits are tied for third-most. Campbell has hit safely in eight of nine career games vs. Iowa, going 10x35 with five doubles, a home run and seven RBI. THE TRIP - New Orleans has dropped six in a row and is 1-6, batting.265 (63x237), scoring 33 runs.the team has allowed 49 earned runs in 58.2 innings pitched, 7.51 ERA. SEIZE THE DAY - The Cakes are 5-7 in day games this season, and have scored three runs or less in five of those contests. WALK-OFF WONDERS Sunday was the Baby Cakes eighth walk-off defeat of the season, last year the club dropped six. DEAN OF HITS In his first 24 games with New Orleans, Austin Dean is hitting.317 (27x86) with 18 RBI and 12 walks for a.414 on-base percentage. TOMAS THE TANK Tomas Telis has a hit in 11 of his last 14 games, batting.438 (21x48) with eight multi-hit efforts and 10 RBI. Dating back to last May 23, Telis owns a.352 batting average (81x230) over his last 60 games with New Orleans. SIR ISAAC - Isaac Galloway has 12 stolen bases, tied for third-most in the PCL, and moved ahead of Colin Porter s (61) for most stolen bases in franchise history Saturday night. Galloway ranks ninth on the club s career leaderboard in games played (324), eighth place in at bats (1,132) and seventh in runs scored (151). LONELIEST NUMBER The Baby Cakes have played 17 one-run games (6-11), and 28 games decided by one or two runs (11-17), third-most in the PCL to Round Rock (28) and Iowa (29), Omaha (27). NOLA has won its last five one-run affairs at home, but has dropped all ten on the road. The Cakes have lost five times this season when allowing three runs or less. STEAL AWAY Rafael Ortega improved to 10x10 in stolen base attempts on Saturday, the most of any player in the PCL without being caught. The Baby Cakes have 41 stolen bases this season, tied for fifthmost in the PCL. Ortega and Isaac Galloway (12) are one of two sets of teammates with at least nine steals, joining Colorado Springs Keon Broxton (15) and Nate Orf (9). He worked at least 3.0 innings in three of the five appearances. WHAT A RELIEF Cloyd scattered four hits and a pair of walks across 5.0 shutout innings of relief vs. the Dodgers on 5/12. It tied the longest relief outing of his career, matching 5.0 scoreless frames on August 24, 2013 vs. Arizona while pitching for Philadelphia. He was optioned to NOLA after the game. HOME COOKIN - Cloyd s second career start in Omaha, his hometown, did not go well as he gave up eight runs on 11 hits, both season highs by a Cakes pitcher, in 5.0 innings in a 5/22 defeat. } ~ ˆ Š PATRIOTIC DUTY Cloyd began 2017 with the independent Somerset Patriots, where he allowed two runs in 12.0 IP with 16 strikeouts across three starts. He was signed to a minor league pact by the Seattle Mariners on 05/10 and assigned to AAA Tacoma. MARVELOUS MAY Cloyd opened his stint with Tacoma in superb fashion, blanking the opposition over his first 15.2 innings spanning three-plus starts. On 5/23, Cloyd picked up his first win of the year, pitching 5.0 shutout innings against Fresno. BACK IN THE BIGS The Mariners purchased Cloyd s contract on 6/2, and he tossed a scoreless seventh inning in his lone appearance with the club on 6/9 vs. Toronto to earn his first Major League victory since June 6, 2013. He was optioned back to Tacoma following the game, and DFA d on 6/21. HOMER HAPPY After rejoining Tacoma on 6/14, Cloyd went on to pitch in another four games (three starts) before the All-Star break without serving up his first home run. Following the break, he gave up eight home runs in 35.0 innings. EARLY SEASON STUD Cloyd carried a 1.42 ERA (4 ER/25.1 IP) into the All-Star break in 2017, after notching a 1.37 ERA prior to the break for AAA Scranton Wikles-Barre in 2016. Cloyd faltered to a 8.74 ERA (34 ER/35.0 IP) in 12 games (eight starts) with Tacoma in 2017. CLOSING STRONG In his final two starts, on 8/30 vs. Salt Lake and 9/3 at Las Vegas, Cloyd worked a combined 10.2 innings and surrendered just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
