Friday was a day for school field trips to learn about the Native American culture. One of the highlights of the festival was The Gator Boys, as seen on Animal Planet. Their wealth of knowledge about alligators and their habitat captivated the crowds. The grounds were filled with music and the colorful regalia of various tribes from North America and Mexico. After a cloudy and chilly Friday, blue skies reigned for Saturday and Sunday. Many spectators have been coming for years to enjoy this vibrant and lively event. PAGE 2 The Pinewood Derby The Pinewood Derby took place on January 24th and January 25th at the Nova Community Center. The Pinewood Derby is a racing event for Cub Scouts from Ormond Beach. The Cub Scouts, with the help of parents, build their own cars from wood. Each participant is given a block of pine wood, four plastic wheels and four nails. The finished car must use all nine pieces, not exceed a certain weight or length and fit on the track used by that particular scout pack. The race is run in heats, giving every car the chance to run on each lane. The racers were grouped with others from the same rank (Tiger Cubs, Wolf Cubs, Bear Cubs, etc.). First, second and third place winners usually receive trophies. This year over 25 boys and their families participated in the event. Gymnastics Lots of activity has been taking place at the Ormond Beach Gymnastics Center. Ormond Beach Pop Warner Cheer began renting the facility for a tumbling program and coaching assistance. Coach George is working with the Nova Community Center s Coordinator to discuss beginning a special needs gymnastics program. On January 19th the girls competed in Tallahassee and everyone received placement ribbons in all the events in which they competed. This weekend, the Center s Level 7 gymnast Alison Strasser will be competing in her first competition as a Mod Op. Gymnast at Fit Club in Orange City. Registration is now open for the February/March session. Please call Coach George at (386) 676-3282 for program information.

PAGE 3 Mixing it Up at SONC The Center has had a mix of activities happening this week. A few days of sunshine and a little higher temperatures allowed people to take advantage of the outdoor basketball and tennis courts. The kids were happy to get out on the playground to expend some of their extra energy in the warm sunshine, keeping their parents happy as well. League basketball wraps up their regular season this week. Free-play basketball continues to be solid as always. The South Ormond Neighborhood Center was the site for a repast service last Saturday. Jazzercise class continues on Monday evenings. Overall the Center has had a constant stream of visitors for the week participating in a variety of different activities. Cub Scouts Tour The Casements The Scouts were told the history of the home and learned about John D. Rockefeller, Sr., and his residency during his time in the City of Ormond Beach. The evening of Thursday, January 23rd, brought an enthusiastic and interested group of six-year olds from Cub Scout Pack 490. The Tigers toured the home with a Casements docent, a knowledgeable volunteer from The Casements Guild.
