Midlands National Flying Club Vire Has S & T McCurry Won The Fairest MNFC race Ever? I suppose a few eyebrows will be raised when this statement is read but how else can one describe a race where the first six open places are taken by six section winning birds? Surely a sign that the MNFC of 2015 is as fair as National racing can be with members in the ESE,SW,NW,NNW, N and SC all in the top six to my way of thinking this is wonderful. The record Vire entry of 6,344 birds is tremendous and once again generated excellent prizemoney of near to 10,000 were liberated at 9.00am into a North Westerly breeze by the Assistant Convoyer Darren Barton. Darren in fact did a great job as proved by the many complimentary comments regarding the superb condition the birds were in on their arrival home. One of those that gave plaudits simply told me that the MNFC have certainly got it right. Enough said! What made for such a fair race? Well in my opinion the equal spread of the entries certainly helped but the major fact I m sure was the strength of the North Westerly breeze which en-route never abated by any great measure during the day was the deciding factor. It is often said that when the going gets tough the tough get going. This is supported by the fact that some super multi-performance birds filled the leading placings. Stuart with his National winning bird June Girl This is highlighted by the race winner owned by S & T McCurry who clocked his 2 year old Dark hen recording 1232. This bird has already won 1 st ESE section from Carentan earlier in the season. The bird is a home bred being a daughter of the McCurrys number one breeder 28 who is bred from a direct son of Telly Savalas the

famed Busschaert cock which was bred and raced by my old pal Alan Atkinson and later purchased by Louella. The mother is an Eric Ceuleman bird which was purchased from Frank and George Bristow. When I visited Stuart s home at what can only be described as a pigeon fancier s dream residence, he showed me the birds that he is blending around 28 to build a strong and reliable sprint and middle distance team at both Federation and National levels. Judging by the quality of the birds in the hand I think that he could be on the right track. As we left Stuart he was busily basketing his youngsters for training in preparation for the MNFC Portland race. Another race which Stuart has his sights firmly fixed on. I for one, if conditions favour his area, won t bet against him repeating his National victory from the same race point making it three wins in two seasons. Without a doubt a very ambitious man is Stuart McCurry. Micky Betts 1 st N Section & 2 nd Open Right up the winner s backside, if you will pardon my description, is a Blue 2013 Cock which is just.8 of a yard behind the Open winner. Mick Betts his very successful owner with three MNFC wins to his name tells me that he is a real good un with many club and Fed positions to his credit. The bird was also Mick s first bird last season from Vire when he was 4 th section and 28 th Open. The breeding is Freddy Vandeheede his sire is a son of Vandeheede s Frans who is a son of the DeRauw Sablon s Golden Couple. His dam is a bird from Ian Vernon from his best pair Whitespot x Marie. Mick also told me that the father s nest mate is grandmother of Micks Ancenis winner of 2013. A further endorsement for the Apple and

tree belief. The 2 nd Open winner will win his North section and win the 1 st 2Bird Nominated race and a handsome cheque for just shy of 1,500. In 3 rd Open is another two year old this time a Red Cock which belongs to D J Aston of Sutton Coldfield which once again is close on the heels of the first two pigeons on 1230. The bird takes the 1 st and a 2 year old Chequer hen laying claim to 4 th South Centre section placings for their efforts. Sadly I have no further details about these birds and his breeding as Mr Aston has not been in touch with me and time simply doesn t allow me to chase the 40 fanciers taking the top four positions in our 10 sections. 1 st North North West section and 4 th Open is filled by a yearling Blue cock belonging to Hebden Bridge partners Leach Brothers. These guys are enjoying an absolute dream season with the MNFC and proving that winning a national race high Enjoying a fabulous season the Leach family 1 st NNW up in the North West of the section 4 th Open Club isn t an impossible dream as their bird is a mere 5½ yards behind the race winner which showers great credit on both the loft and their pigeons. The 4 th Open winner is now named Maximus and is a grandson of 4 of the loft s base breeders. His sire is a son of the Syndicate cock x Daughter Trinity a Wall Lunt & Green pigeon. His mother is a daughter of the Macalony Cock x The 51 Hen who is a fabulous breeder being mum to three separate winners this year including 1 st Border Amal. Proof of this 4 th Open yearling cock is highlighted by the fact that the loft is also 2 nd section and a very creditable 43 rd Open placing with a yearling hen on 1186 some 40 ypm behind their section winner. The bird called Dot and Adrian tells me that she is already turning into a real banker. She is a pure Macalony bird bred by his friend Jim Chadwick of Westhaughton. She is, I m told, predominantly Vandeabeele with a touch of the Macalony Dream Pair. As a baby she won 1 st Pennine Valley Fed from Portland and this time she has continued her good work 1 st club 2 nd Fed and 4 th 4 th Amal 4 th Lancs Combine and 4 th 3 Counties Combine with

6,000 + birds competing from Carentan. Once again the partners were full of praise to the MNFC and the way that the club look after their members birds. 5 th Open and 1 st NW section is claimed by good friends of mine in the form of Alan Windsor and his not so silent partner Snooker. These lads show just how much effort is needed to be put in to win top prizes in the The Vire Specialists Snooker and Alan Windsor 1 st NW section and 5 th Open on this occasion. white hot competition of the Mid Nat. Their reward is the likely winning of the section old bird averages. Their section topper is a good hen being a 3 year old roundabout pigeon. She is bred from Galaxy Lofts stock. Her sire is a Galaxy Koopman-Van Loon and her mother is a daughter of a bird that Jack Cornes gifted to the partners and was called Snooker s Girl. This bird has done the partners proud with section placings of 11 th and 23 rd section from Carentan and now 1 st section with total winnings of in the region of 1,400. Some may say that they have been lucky but I find the harder you work the luckier you become! Well done lads. 6th Open and 1 st South West section is taken by Walsall s E Carnell & Son. The partners clocked a 3 year old The Chambers family 7 th Open Blue Cock on 1216 just 2 yards behind the 5 th Open winner. The bird has a few bob on him and takes a nice win of 312. Right behind in 2 nd section and 7 th Open is fellow SW members the Chambers Family

whose bird is a 2 nom bird and this 2 year old hen claims 522. The Chambers are also enjoying a good season. Mr & Mrs Jon Dodd 8 th & 9 th Open. A very popular performance Well Done Jonny and Debbs. I am delighted to report on the partnership that win 8 th and 9 th Open and 2 nd and 3 rd section places in the form of the Club s Treasurer Mr & Mrs Jonathan Dodd who clocked two birds in 29 seconds and lift nearly 2,000 for their efforts. Their first arrival being a yearling Blue Cock which is from birds acquired off his chums Gary Daykin and Jonathan Hamplett. The sire is a son of Gary s Car winner while the dam is off Jonathan s best winning lines. Their second bird is Jan Arden based yearling bred by Jon s bosses at Louella. You see Jon is the Manager at Louella s horse Stud. I m chuffed for you mate. You can buy me a pint at the Prize Distribution after all you can now afford it! 10 th Open and 2 nd North West section is won by J & S Ward from near Oldham with a 2 year old cock and like the nine in from of him is a cracker. The bird had earlier won 1 st Border Amal and 2 nd Lancs combined from 394 miles. Then one week later won 8 th Border Amal from Cheltenham. This serves to underline both his ability and super form. The bird was sent to Vire sitting 10 day old eggs. The bird is a Peter Van Der Merwe being a grandchild of The Promise and on his dam s side Replay and Favoritje. 11 th Open and 3 rd North West section is filled by Cheadle based fanciers Prince Brothers who clocked a yearling Chequer hen for a velocity of 1207. Perhaps readers will see that in such a tough race that the Prince Brothers 11 th Open and 3 rd NW section

Cream rises to the top. On an easy day you can sometimes get a lucky bird on hard days this is never the case! Rounding up the sections and in 4 th NW section is Mr & Mrs N Shaw who clocked 3 year old Chequer cock which is a David Windsor bred Zoontjen x Soontjen and no you read that correctly. The father is a Wal Zoontjen based bird from the late Len Hopton and the mother is a Marden Soontjen. Nigel s bird recorded 1205. Either side of his bird are two South West pigeons 3 rd South West section and 12 th Open is Essington s Jack Heath who clocked a yearling Pied cock on 1206 which will get a nice little draw for his owner. While 4 th section and 15 th Open is won by Mr & Mrs Peter Shaw of Wolverhampton who are once again enjoying another fruitful season. Nigel Shaw 4 th NW section Peter Shaw with the new loft manager 4 th SW section The West section is won by a yearling Blue cock belonging to the Platts Bridge fancier John Hankey. John s pigeon clocks up a velocity of 1198 to lift the 150 section topper s prize money. In 2 nd section we see the very successful loft of Bob & Brian Smith with a yearling Blue hen that has already started to make her mark with a 1 st club 2 nd fed from Yeovil and 2 nd club and 2 nd Fed from Mangotsfield on her CV. Her mum Blue Tops is a real champion which in 2013 was the West Blue Tops the dam of R & B Smith s 2 nd West section winner

section's Ace Pigeon. Her best performances include 1 st section MNFC Fougères and 7 th section from Ancenis. With the NFC she won 3 rd section 14 th Open from Messac. Additionally this super racer won 1 st section 2 nd Open NWGN from Fougères and 1 st Eccles 2 bird, 1 st St Helens 3Bird and 2 nd Warrington 2 Bird from Messac. 3 rd West section went to my old mate Paul Onions Hourihan with a velocity of 1179. Paul clocked a yearling hen to take the prize. Derrick Jones of Wrexham started another successful weekend with 4 th section. The bird a yearling Blue Cock was bred by the Wizard s pal Eddie Bateman being bred from a son of Derrick s Tours National winner when paired to one of Eddie s own hens. The loft had a great race with the 6 th The Woodfield Wizard the Jones Boy still weaving his magic 4 th W section this time. bird in the clock the main pooler being their 10 th arrival. In 2 nd ESE section is a yearling belonging to Mr & Mrs Willy Beckett the bird is a Les Papp bred Halstead Southwell pigeon. So could well be one to look out for next year from Bordeaux. 4 th section here is taken by S H Ewing of Downham Market who clocked a 2014 Blue hen on 1126. Willy Beckett 2 nd ESE section We have to go right up into East Yorkshire now to the partnership that have taken 1 st spot in the East section in the form of Bridlington fanciers Mellonby and Wheelhouse and boy have these guys enjoyed a good season with the MNFC. The bird responsible for this latest win is a Premier lofts bred Blue Cock which The East section winners Mellonby & Wheelhouse flying brilliantly once again

recorded a speed of 1174. Kerry Mellonby works at the stud and is well aware of the quality that is housed up there at Partrington. Phil Curtis & Son with their 2 nd E section winner 2 nd section is filled by Phil Curtis and son who recorded 1157 with a 2 year old hen that had flown Carentan twice previously with the Northern Classic. She is a mixture of Phil s Old Pied Cock family with a little bit of Robert & Chris Dobbelaere. On the sires side she is down from Paul Kendall s Morning Glory x a grandson of the Dobbelaeres Totti the 1 st International Dax winner from a few years ago. Phil tells me that this game hen shines on the harder days. In 3 rd section we see a case of lightning stiking twice because the bird responsible a Blue Chequer 2 year old cock on 1155 won the exact same position in 2014 from the same race point for Barton on Humber flyers S & M Cook. S & M Cook who saw lightening strike twice with their Vire & Bordeaux birds A velocity of 1146 sees T Bennett of Westville take the 4 th placing and it was his 2 year old Blue Cock which did the job for him. Terry Bennett 4 th E section Across to the North section again now and in 2 nd section place is the Maltby loft of D Edwards a 4 year old Blue cock covering the 317 miles on 1192 and will earn his owner a nice little pay out of 235. It was a tight tussle for 3 rd and 4 th N section being split by.5 of a yard with J & N Beal s yearling Blue cock which is off Leo Van Rijn breeding his sire being a gift off Brian Johnson. In fact the bird was bred to be given to Brian but he was felt to be too strong on the wing when Brian finally went

The Beal Boys 3 rd N section to collect him so he was left in the breeder s young bird loft. This appears to be a stroke of luck as up to press besides his latest 3 rd section win 24 as he is known has won 2 x1st prizes and 3x 2 nd placings. In 4 th slot just edged out is Castleford s S Gill &Son who timed in a yearling Blue Hen which has been very consistent this season being their first arrival in all of her four MNFC races. What a super bird this Van den Bosche x Verheye x M&D Evans Shadow and Super Gaby lines is. Slipping down now to the North East section and there we see the Littliest Hobo repaying his owners faith because Charles Whyte told me that both he and his brother went AWOL the week after they won 1 st and 7 th Club and 2 nd and 17 th Fed. Fortunately the Hobo returned some six months later in early 2014. Charles mentors Charlie and Russ Wooff were consulted and told him to keep the bird and see how things went. Well now we know. Charles was very candid and honest when he said that he wasn t certain of the birds breeding but his Bordeaux Cock Charles Whyte with his young stars and their bird Little Hobo 1 st NE section raised him but he isn t sure whether he was the father or just the foster father as the Wooff brother gave Charles some eggs and that is what caused the confusion. Charles wishes to thank also Ali McLeod along with Dave Drinkhall and Jason Whyte for their advice and gift birds. 2 nd NE section was won by Andrew Newton who is a past MNFC winner. On this occasion a 3 year old Chequer W/F cock has given Andrew his latest performance when he recorded 1187. Andrew Newton 2 nd NE section poses with one of his favourites

3rd section in the North East is filled by Ralph Jepson of Underwood. Ralph timed a yearling Van Loon x Koopman Blue cock which was bred by Keith Cresswell on 1185. I am told that Ralph has enjoyed a good season and he has been in the top twenty of every race he has competed in with the MNFC. When talking to him Ralph was delighted by the condition that his birds returned in. He wishes to pass his thanks to his mate Tony Wardle for the aid he has given him helping to train and clean out the loft. Can I borrow him Ralph? Ashbourne s Mark Williamson timed a 2 year old Pied Cock to take the 4 th section place on 1180. This was closely followed by a yearling Chequer hen a mere 2 seconds later. I noticed his birds when he came to our marking station and his birds looked like oil paintings so his good performance from Vire is no surprise to me. 4 th NE section winner Mark Williamson Young Ryan the son of the Cullinane & Son team who were 3 rd NNW section 3 rd and 4 th section places in the North North West section are filled by two Todmorden lofts in the form of D Cullinane & Son who clocked a yearling hen on 1175 while Mr & Mrs Fisher & Son are just a yard behind with another yearling but on this occasion a Blue Cock. It was great to see that the new NNW lads are starting to support our races in good numbers. Obviously the word is getting around that the racing is good with the MNFC! The Fisher family 4 th NNW section

Rob Jarratt with the gang and his super little hen 1 st South East section A name that has been ever present in the South East section this year is the name Jarratt on this occasion it appears to be Rob s turn to beat his Dad Ian who you will remember won 1 st National last year from Ancenis. The winner is lovely apple bodied Yearling Lambrecht hen that is rapidly making herself the star bird of the loft. Rob tells me that her record this season is 2 nd section from Carentan, 8 th section from Ancenis and now the 1 st position on 1199. From all three of these races she was the first yearling timed in the SE section. Rob claims no great credit for his hen s performances which has flown natural all year and has performed in several nest positions. This time she was sent sitting a 6 day old baby. Rob tells me that despite no strict feeding regime and not cleaned out as often as her owner would like if time allowed the bird has quite simply got it. Rob asks me to send his congratulations to Graham Groom, Steve Gubbins and Albert Farrow for their performances from Bordeaux. I will be covering these people and all the other fanciers and birds that flew so well from this tough race next week. 2 nd SE section is filled by Geoff and Geraldine Jakings who saw home a yearling roundabout Blue cock on 1186. The couple turned to the South route three years ago and the performance put up by the David Duffy bred Hereman Ceusters is their best since their switch. Mr & Mrs Jakings 2 nd SE section 3 rd section here is to the Wootton loft of Phil Lane & Son who timed his 3 year old Chequer cock on 1179 to continue his good season with the

club. Spalding s N Grumitt clocked a 2 year old Blue hen on 1168 to secure the 4 th section slot. All of these pigeons that have been highlighted in this report are good birds which are likely to feature in future races. Phil Lane & Son 3 rd SE section Ronnie Watson s hen Pocahontas which took a good prize in the SC section Ronnie with his grandchildren playing red Indians while the 3 year old SVR x Janssen homed - hence her new name. Well that completes the first part of the 2015 Double Header. Hopefully the Bordeaux report will be in your favourite paper next week if I don t collapse with exhaustion.

Marking Station Time Change The Abbey marking station will be now open from 9.30 am until 11.00 for the forthcoming two young bird races. Tell your friends of the time change if you use the Stoke on Trent marking station. Mike Lakin
