The Redbirds claimed 11 of 16 meetings last season, and have now won seven of the last nine at the Shrine. The Baby Cakes have slipped a season-high 9½ games behind first-place Memphis in the division race. YESTERDAY S NEWS Wilfredo Tovar drove in all three runs for the Redbirds in a 3-2 win over New Orleans. Starting pitchers Dillon Peters and Daniel Poncedeleon dueled in a scoreless tie until the sixth, when Memphis put runners at second and third on a hit by pitch and a walk before Tovar s two-out blooper fell between first baseman Tomas Telis and right fielder Isaac Galloway for a double, allowing both runners to score. The Cakes cut the deficit in half on an RBI ground out by Rafael Ortega in the seventh following consecutive walks to start the inning. Tovar homered off Severino Gonzalez to lead off the ninth, providing an a key insurance tally, as Galloway returned the favor with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the frame before Edward Mujica retired the side for his second save. Poncedeleon worked around four walks and four hits in 6.0 innings, thanks in part to eight strikeouts, and earned the win. Peters allowed just three hits, walked two, and struck out five and was dealt the loss. ON THE HILL Ben Meyer ascends the bump tonight for his 10th start of the season and first career appearance vs. Memphis. Meyer recorded only two outs last Friday in Des Moines, allowing four On This Date... runs on four hits with three walks in the shortest start by a NOLA pitcher since Chris Narveson in June 2015. Meyer has yeidled 11 earned runs in 3.0 innings over his last two starts, after carrying the league s thirdbest ERA (2.40), along with a PCL-leading WHIP (0.87) and opponents batting average (.188), through his first seven turns. He was named PCL Pitcher of ng the Week for April 30-May 6 during a run of three consecutive quality starts lasting at least 7.0 innings apiece, the first NOLA pitcher to do so since Jose Urena in May 2015. MAY DAYS New Orleans boasts a.277 team batting average this month trailing only Salt Lake (.297), Albuquerque (.293), Fresno (.285) among PCL clubs. The Cakes had hit just.225 in April, the club s lowest over a full month since hitting.222 in May 2008. The Baby Cakes have also swatted 22 home runs this month, after hitting only nine in April. DEAN OF HITS In his first 27 games with New Orleans, Austin Dean is hitting.306 (30x98) with 18 RBI and 12 walks for a.397 OBP. Dean was hitting.420 (34x81) in 22 games with AA Jacksonville and was named April s Southern League Player of the Month after pacing the circuit in batting average, hits, total bases (53), slugging percentage (.654) and OPS (1.120). Dean s.358 overall batting average is tied with Salt Lake s Jose Miguel Fernandez for 15th in all of MiLB, and he is hitting.385 (15x39) in 10 games since moving into the leadoff spot. TOMAS THE TANK Tomas Telis has a hit in 14 of his last 17 games, batting.400 (24x60) with eight multi-hit efforts and 11 RBI. Since joining New Orleans on May 4, Telis ranks 10th in the PCL with a.344 average, with singles accounting for 30 of his 32 hits.. Dating back to May 23 last season, Telis owns a.347 batting average (84x242) over his last 63 games with New Orleans. SIR ISAAC Isaac Galloway has 12 stolen bases, tied for third-most in the PCL, and stole his 62nd base in a New Orleans uniform on Saturday to move ahead of Colin Porter for the most in franchise history. Galloway ranks ninth on the club s career leaderboard in games played (326), sixth place in at bats (1,140) and seventh in runs scored (152). Galloway also leads the team in hits, doubles, runs, and multi-hit games this season. STEAL AWAY Rafael Ortega improved to 10x10 in stolen base attempts on Saturday, the most of any play- er in the PCL without being caught. He needed only 12 pitches to strike out the side in the first inning and finished with five punchouts. HOME SWEET HOME In three starts at the Shrine, Meyer owns a 1.06 ERA (2 ER/17.0 IP) and a.107 (6x56) batting average against. After shutting out Colorado Springs for 5.0 innings on 4/18, he had allowed one or no runs in 10 of his 15 starting assignments going back to 2017 with Jupiter. SEVENTH HEAVEN His 7.0 innings in a no-decision on 4/30 vs. Round Rock tied a career high, set twice last July with Jupiter, and was his first quality start of the season. NO APRIL FOOL Through his first five starts, Meyer sported the lowest opponents batting average (.192) among all PCL starters, including a.171 mark (7x41) for left-handed hitters. Meyer ranked 2nd in the league in fewest baserunners per 9.0 innings pitched (9.55). A MAJOR AWARD The PCL named Meyer its Pitcher of the Week for 4/30-5/6 after he allowed three runs and five hits in 14.0 IP over a pair of starts. He faced only two over the minimum in his 7.0 innings on 5/4 at Omaha, with the only two hits he allowed coming in a three-batter sequence. MAY DAZE After surrendering a career-high seven runs in 2.1 innings on 5/19 vs. Round Rock, Meyer had the shortest start of his career on 5/25 at Iowa, recording only two outs and yielding four runs. It was the fewest IP by a NOLA pitcher since Chris Narveson s 0.2 IP on June 21, 2015 vs. Colorado Springs. 2017 in review YOUNG GRASSHOPPER Meyer opened the 2017 campaign with Low-A Greensboro, where he was 2-0 with a 2.15 ERA (7 ER/29.1 IP) in 12 games, all out of the bullpen. He picked up the victory in his season debut on 4/7 vs. Hickory, yielding one run and two hits with four strikeouts in 2.1 innings. HEATING UP After allowing runs in each of his first five appearances, Meyer was unscored upon in six of his last seven outings with the Grasshoppers, permitting one run in 17.0 innings (0.53 ERA). BIG FISH Meyer was promoted to High-A Jupiter on 5/28 and notched a 1.98 ERA while limiting FSL opponents to a.201 batting average (59x293). He did not surrender a home run in 293 at-bats. In 17 relief innings with Jupiter, Meyer gave up just one earned run (0.53 ERA) with 23 strikeouts. FUN UNDER THE SUN During day games, Meyer was nearly perfect, allowing only one earned run in 28.2 IP (0.31 ERA) while opponents hit.153 (15x98).
