Conference games still tied after a five-minute 5-on-5 overtime advance to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime (and sudden victory shootout if still tied) with the team that wins the second overtime/shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (3/SW in the standings). A 3-on-3 overtime or shootout win then is worth two points in the standings while the team that loses the 3-on-3 overtime/shootout receives just one point for the tie. The 3-on-3 overtime and shootouts only affect conference standings while the game is officially a tie for NCAA purposes. Three NCHC teams (CC, Miami and UMD) head east for two-game road series at Hockey East foes this weekend. While the NCHC has posted the best non-conference record among the conferences each of the last two seasons, NCHC teams went 5-12-7 against Hockey East foes in the regular season last year. The NCHC is off to a 2-0-0 start in non-conference play this year after Minnesota Duluth swept Michigan Tech last weekend. Denver hosts the Ice Breaker Tournament this weekend. This is the first of two straight years an NCHC team will host the Ice Breaker as UMD s AMSOIL Arena will host in 2017. An NCHC team has participated in the Ice Breaker three straight years now with UND winning it last year in Maine. Four NCHC teams are ranked in the top seven of both the USCHO.com Poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. North Dakota, which won its eighth national championship and the NCHC s first last season, is the No. 1 team in the country in both polls. Denver is No. 3 in one poll and fourth in the other, while Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State are right behind in both polls. The College Hockey News Preseason Poll also had UND No. 1 with DU, UMD and SCSU all in the top five. The NCHC is the only conference with four teams in the top eight of the polls. (page 9) Four NCHC players received recognition from College Hockey News by being named to the All-CHN Preseason Teams. NCHC players made up half of the First Team with North Dakota sophomore forward Brock Boeser and UND junior goalie Cam Johnson each making the squad, along with Denver sophomore forward Dylan Gambrell. DU senior defenseman Will Butcher was named to the Second Team. The RedHawks have a combined 20 underclassmen on the team, which ties for second-most in the NCAA, while MU s three seniors tie for the fifth fewest in the country (second in the NCHC behind UND s two). Despite boasting 10 seniors last season, eight of whom were skaters, Miami s freshmen from a year ago (now sophomores) contributed to 36.4 percent of the team s scoring (87 of 239 points). Miami exploded for eight goals in its exhibition win over Waterloo Saturday. The eight goals would have been a season high last year as MU scored more than four goals only once all last season. Sophomore forward Josh Melnick led the attack with four points (1g,3a) while freshmen forwards Alex Alger and Karch Bachman added two goals each. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post- Graduate Scholarship. North Dakota has won back-to-back Penrose Cups after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament consists of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 10-12, 2017). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-out-of-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series will advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Target Center in Minneapolis for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 17. (Semifinal games will be reseeded based on the final regular-season standings). The winners of the two semifinal games (4:00/7:30 p.m. CT) will then meet in the Championship Game (7:30 p.m. CT) on Saturday, March 18 for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the two losers from the semifinal games will face each other in the third-place game (3:30 p.m. CT) earlier in the day. 2015-16 Final NCHC Standings Conference Overall Pts.
