Julie & Spencer Penrose Memorial Cup Awarded to the NCHC regular season champion, the Julie and Spencer Penrose Memorial Cup (right) serves as the league s crowning achievement. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation also issued a grant for the Penrose Cup. 9 New NCHC Overtime and Standings Format New NCHC Overtime/Shootout Protocol Beginning with the season, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference adopted a new overtime and shootout format to award an extra point within the conference standings. After using a three-man shootout to decide tie games following the NCAA-mandated 5-on-5 overtime period during the NCHC s first two seasons, the NCHC Board of Directors and NCAA Ice Hockey Rules Committee approved the use of a 3-on-3 overtime between the NCAA-mandated overtime and the shootout, should a game remain tied after the 5-on-5 overtime. As has been the case in previous seasons, any conference game that remains tied after regulation will play the NCAA-mandated 5-on-5 (plus goalies) 5-minute overtime period, which is also done throughout all NCAA hockey conferences. If one team scores, they receive all three points in the conference standings while the losing team receives none. The game also counts as a win and loss nationally in the PairWise rankings. If no goal is scored, the game is considered a tie with both teams receiving one point in the conference standings and it is also called a tie nationally, also the same as previous seasons. Beginning with the season, if a conference game is still tied after the 5-minute overtime, the two teams will then play a 3-on-3 (plus goalies) 5-minute overtime period for the extra point in the conference standings, keeping all conference games worth three points. The result of the 3-on-3 overtime will not affect the PairWise rankings as the game is still considered a tie. If a team scores during the 3-on-3 overtime, the winning team will receive the extra point for two points in the standings while the losing team will receive the one point for the tie. The final score of the game will still reflect a tie, however. If the game is still tied after the 5-minute 3-on-3 overtime period, the game will then go to a sudden-death shootout for the extra point (rather than the three-man shootout in previous seasons). Each team will get one shooter, if one shooter scores and the other doesn t, that team wins the shootout and extra point in the standings (two points total). If both shooters score or neither scores, the shootout will continue with another round until a winner is determined. In summary, each conference game will be worth three points. Three points will be awarded to any team that wins a game in regulation or within the 5-minute sudden-death 5-on-5 overtime period. One point will be awarded to each team in a game that remains tied at the conclusion of the 5-on-5 overtime period (65 minutes). One additional point will be awarded to the team who wins the 3-on-3 overtime or sudden-death shootout, giving that team two points total. A team that loses in regulation or during the 5-minute 5-on-5 overtime period will receive zero points. Statistics accumulated during the 3-on-3 overtime period will NOT count in the conference or national statistics. Only statistics recorded during regulation and 5-on-5 overtime will count for statistical purposes, however 3-on-3 overtime statistics will be kept so they can be seen on live statistics during games and will be noted in the box score. The lone exception is a game misconduct or game disqualification penalty issued during the 3-on-3 overtime or shootout, which would be recorded at 5:00 of the 5-on-5 overtime. All other penalties will be enforced during the 3-on-3 overtime, however they will not count in conference or national statistics. A penalty called during 3-on-3 overtime will result in a 4-on-3 power play (or 5-on-3 power play if a two-man advantage). Non-conference games at NCHC member venues will follow the same overtime protocol upon receiving consent from the visiting non-conference opponent. NCHC Tournament games will not feature 3-on-3 overtime or shootouts, but rather 20-minute sudden death overtime periods, which will be played until a winner is declared (exception: The third-place game of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff will use a 5-minute overtime followed by 3-on-3 overtime and a sudden-death shootout, if necessary). New Conference Standings Format With the NCHC introducing a new overtime format for conferences games beginning this season, the NCHC has also slightly adjusted its conference standings format to reflect the new procedures. Although the point distribution and column point values within the standings are not changing, the look of the standings will be slightly altered. The first three columns of the conference standings will remain the same as they have the first two seasons with the first column representing a regulation or 5-on-5 overtime win (worth 3 points), the second column representing a regulation or 5-on-5 overtime loss (worth 0 points) and the third column still indicates games that end in a tie after the 5-on-5 overtime (worth 1 point). The slight modification is occurring in the fourth column (far right column), which previously was listed as SW and indicated a shootout win worth an additional point after the tie. In order to include results from the new 3-on-3 overtime format the NCHC announced on August 17, the far right column will now be listed as 3/SW to indicate either a 3-on-3 overtime or shootout win, both of which are still worth one additional point after the tie regardless of whether the game ends during the 3-on-3 overtime or has to be decided by a sudden victory shootout. During the NCHC s first two seasons, the conference standings/record were displayed as W-L-T-SW. Beginning this coming season, the conference standings format and conference record will be displayed as W-L-T-3/SW. When possible, conference records will be listed to include the backslash in the final column (Ex /1), otherwise the 3-on-3 overtime and shootout wins will be listed as one combined number (Ex ). The 3-on-3 overtime and shootout will not affect a team s overall record, nor will it affect the national PairWise Rankings, which determine the NCAA Tournament field. The result of the game following the 5-on-5 overtime is considered final by NCAA standards and would be reflected as such in a team s overall record and in the PairWise Rankings. Should a conference game remain tied after the 5-on-5 overtime, it would be considered a tie nationally regardless of the 3-on-3 overtime or shootout result. Jan , 2016 NCHCHockey.com NCHC.tv 9

14 Previous Week Round-Up FRIDAY, JAN. 8 With the return of National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) play for the first time in nearly a month and first time in 2016, defense proved to be the theme as none of the seven NCHC teams in action Friday racked up more than three goals, while one team pitched a shutout and another game needed overtime. No. 4/5 St. Cloud State moved into a first-place tie in the NCHC with a narrow, 2-1 victory over Colorado College, while No. 17 Denver shut out No. 6/6 Omaha, 3-0, in Baxter Arena to give the Mavericks their first home loss this season. In Oxford, Miami and No. 19 Minnesota Duluth skated to a 1-1 overtime tie while the RedHawks won 3-on-3 overtime for an extra point. In non-conference action, Western Michigan dropped a 7-1 decision at Notre Dame in the opener of their home-and-home series. In front of a national TV audience on CBS Sport Network, last-place Colorado College gave No. 4/5 St. Cloud State all it could handle but the Huskies held off a feisty Tigers squad for a 2-1 win Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center to move into a first-place tie in the NCHC with No. 1/2 North Dakota. SCSU (17-4-0, NCHC) jumped out a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by freshman forward Mikey Eyssimont and sophomore forward Patrick Russell, which turned out to be the game-winner with Eyssimont also assisting on the play. Senior forward Cody Bradley brought the Tigers (4-17-0, NCHC) within one on a second period power play goal but Huskies junior goalie Charlie Lindgren totaled 26 saves to preserve SCSU s fifth straight win. SCSU held a shots on goal advantage while freshman Jacob Nehama made 34 saves in defeat for CC. Despite being heavily outshot, No. 17 Denver jumped on No. 6/6 Omaha early and made the goals stand up as the Pioneers snapped a fourgame losing streak in NCHC play and six-game winless streak overall to defeat the Mavericks, 3-0, Friday at Baxter Arena. Omaha (14-4-1, NCHC) suffered its first ever loss at Baxter Arena after starting 8-0 there as DU (8-7-4, ) grabbed a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. Junior defenseman Will Butcher scored two goals, including the first goal, which was the game-winner, while freshman defenseman Blake Hillman notched his first career goal to make it 2-0 only 19 seconds after Butcher s first goal. Sophomore goalie Tanner Jaillet earned his second shutout of the season, making 35 saves, as Omaha outshot the Pioneers, In another low-scoring defensive battle, Miami picked up two points in conference play as the RedHawks tied No. 19 Minnesota Duluth, 1-1, after overtime but grabbed the extra point with a 3-on-3 overtime win Friday night at Steve Cady Arena. Senior defenseman Chris Joyaux put Miami (6-10-3, /0 NCHC) in front in the second period only to see UMD senior forward Tony Cameranesi tie the game with less than six minutes to play in regulation. After a scoreless 5-on-5 overtime, the game ended as a tie, but sophomore defenseman Louie Belpedio, fresh off a World Junior Championship bronze medal with Team USA, scored in the final minute of 3-on-3 overtime to earn two points for the Red- Hawks. The Bulldogs (7-7-4, /0 NCHC) outshot Miami, 37-25, but senior Jay Williams made 36 saves in net to earn the win for MU. In the only non-conference game Friday involving an NCHC team, Western Michigan was defeated by No. 15/14 Notre Dame for the second time this season, falling 7-1 at Compton Family Ice Arena. The Irish (10-4-6) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first period and never looked back, adding four more in a six-minute span in the second stanza to make it 7-0. Freshman forward Griffen Molino tallied the Broncos only goal on the power play in the third period to break up the shutout. Notre Dame received goals from seven different players in the win as it outshot WMU (7-11-1), 46-19, including 38-9 over the first 40 minutes. SATURDAY, JAN. 9 With all eight National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) teams in action Saturday night, a little bit of everything took place as a sweep occurred, an upset took place on the road and an NCHC team rallied from a three-goal deficit in the third period to earn a tie in non-conference play. Jumping out to a 3-0 lead, No. 17 Denver held on for a 4-3 win at No. 6/6 Omaha to finish a sweep at Baxter Arena after UNO had not lost their all season. In the biggest upset of the night, Colorado College stunned No. 4/5 St. Cloud State, 5-2, for its first conference road win of the season, while No. 17 Minnesota Duluth also earned a 5-2 road win at Miami. In non-conference action, Western Michigan erased a three-goal deficit in the third period to force overtime and settled for a 3-3 tie with No. 15/14 Notre Dame. No. 1/2 North Dakota was also in action, topping the U.S. U-18 National Team in exhibition action, 4-1. In the only sweep of the weekend, No. 17 Denver finished off its broom-job of No. 6/6 Omaha with a 4-3 win at Baxter Arena Saturday, holding off a Mavericks rally to give UNO its first two home losses of the season. The Pioneers (9-7-4, NCHC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two second-period goals and an early third-period tally from sophomore forward Danton Heinen, but Omaha (14-5-1, NCHC) cut the lead to 3-2 with two quick markers minutes later. Freshman forward Dylan Gambrell, who also had two assists Saturday, scored the game-winner for DU midway through the final frame on the power play with assists from Heinen and junior forward Trevor Moore, who had two in the game. The Mavs closed to within one late but couldn t find the equalizer in the 4-3 loss despite a shots advantage. Sophomore goalie Tanner Jaillet made 25 saves for DU in the win. In the biggest upset in conference play so far this season, Colorado College earned its first conference road win of the season with a 5-2 victory at No. 4/5 St. Cloud State Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Freshman goalie Jacob Nehama compiled 47 saves to backstop the Tigers (5-17-0, NCHC), who were outshot by the Huskies (17-5-0, NCHC), including 20-3 over the final 20 minutes. Sophomore defenseman Teemu Kivihalme, who also had an assist, opened the scoring for CC while the Tigers used a three-goal second period to grab a 5-1 lead. Junior forward Sam Rothstein added a goal and an assist as well in the win. After tying Friday, No. 19 Minnesota Duluth grinded away at a tough RedHawk defense to come away with a 5-2 win over Miami Saturday at Steve Cady Arena. UMD (8-7-4, /0 NCHC) received goals from five different Bulldogs, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the first period and adding two more in the second for a 4-0 advantage before Miami (6-11-3, /0 NCHC) got on the board. The Bulldogs held a shots advantage with sophomore Kasimir Kaskisuo stopping 13 shots in the win. In the most exciting game of the night, Western Michigan erased a three-goal third period deficit to tie No. 15/14 Notre Dame, 3-3, after overtime, and went on to win an exhibition 3-on-3 overtime at Lawson Ice Arena in the home-and-home series finale. The Fighting Irish (10-4-7) struck once in each of the first two periods and made it 3-0 with a power play marker in the third period, but WMU (7-11-2) answered seconds later to cut the deficit back to two. Junior forward Sheldon Dries then took over, pulling the Broncos within one with eight minutes to play before knotting the game at three with an extra attacker goal with 22 seconds left in regulation. After a scoreless 5-on-5 overtime, which officially ended the game as a 3-3 tie, freshman forward Griffen Molino tallied in the exhibition 3-on-3 overtime.
