Only one series needed three games as third-seeded Western Michigan edged sixth-seeded Omaha on Sunday in overtime to clinch the final Frozen Faceoff berth. In the last three NCHC postseasons, only two quarterfinal series have gone the distance, including WMU this year. Top-seeded Denver, second-seeded Minnesota Duluth and fourth-seeded North Dakota all swept their series to return to Minneapolis. All four Frozen Faceoff participants have qualified for the NCHC s championship weekend previously, with Denver and North Dakota both making their fourth straight appearance in the Frozen Faceoff, the only NCHC teams to appear in all four Frozen Faceoffs to date. Minnesota Duluth is making its second straight trip after taking runner-up honors in its first Frozen Faceoff last season, while Western Michigan is also making its second appearance but first since the inaugural 2014 event. Of the four participants, only Denver has won the tournament (2014), while UND and WMU are still searching for their first championship game appearance. Denver enters the Frozen Faceoff on a 13-game winning streak, which is the longest active win streak in the NCAA. The Pioneers last lost Jan. 20 at St. Cloud State. DU s 28 wins this season are the most in the NCAA, three more than second-place Union. Denver also leads the nation on defense, allowing only 1.84 goals per game. With two wins last weekend, UND reached the 20-win plateau for the 15th consecutive season, which is the second-longest active 20-win streak behind Denver, which has secured its 16th straight 20-win season. Western Michigan s 22 wins this season are its most since the season (27). Last year, WMU won only eight games with the 14-win improvement this season the largest turnaround in the NCAA. Denver senior captain Will Butcher was named a Top-10 Hobey Baker Award finalist Wednesday, the lone defenseman on the list. He is the sixth Hobey Baker finalist in the NCHC s four years. The NCHC has had at least one Hobey Baker Award finalist all four years of competition so far. Sixth-seeded Omaha took a series lead on senior forward Justin Parizek s game-winner in overtime to beat No. 3 seed Western Michigan, 2-1, in Kalamazoo. Also in overtime, senior forward Dominic Toninato proved to be the hero for second-seeded Minnesota Duluth, which escaped with a 5-4 win over No. 7 seed Miami. Top-seeded and top-ranked Denver stretched its win streak to 12 games with a 4-1 victory over rival No. 8 seed Colorado College. 18 Last Saturday/Sunday Round-up Denver, UMD and North Dakota All Punch Tickets to NCHC Frozen Faceoff with Sweeps Saturday Broncos force decisive game 3 with Omaha Sunday night after 5-2 win Saturday After last season s National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Tournament saw all four higher seeds sweep in two games, this year the NCHC Quarterfinals will have one game three while three higher seeds did complete sweeps Saturday night to advance to the 2017 NCHC Frozen Faceoff. Top-ranked and top-seeded Denver secured its fourth straight trip to the Frozen Faceoff in four years of the NCHC after blanking rival Colorado College, 4-0, at Magness Arena to win its 13th straight game and take the best-of-three series 2-0, while ending CC s season. Fourth-seeded No. 14/13 North Dakota also clinched its fourth appearance in as many years at the Frozen Faceoff with a 6-5 overtime win over No. 20 St. Cloud State to sweep the playoff series and end the Huskies season. The third team to book a trip to Minneapolis was No. 2 seed and No. 3 ranked Minnesota Duluth, which used a three-goal third-period rally to top Miami, 5-3, and earn its second straight trip to the Frozen Faceoff while ending the RedHawks campaign. The lone game three will take place in Kalamazoo, where third-seeded No. 7/8 Western Michigan topped No. 6 seed Omaha, 5-2, to even the best-of-three series after falling in Friday s series opener. After picking up a 4-1 win Friday, No. 1/1 Denver cruised to a 4-0 shutout of Colorado College Saturday to complete a quarterfinal sweep of their in-state rivals at Magness Arena and earn a fourth straight trip to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff. The Pioneers (28-6-4) received a second straight shutout from senior Evan Cowley, who stopped all 17 shots he faced for his sixth career whitewash. After a scoreless first period, DU received two goals from sophomore forward Logan O Connor in the second stanza for his first career multi-goal game, and picked up two more goals from classmate Troy Terry in the final frame, each on special teams, to cap the win. Denver outshot the Tigers (8-24-4), 31-17, in the win. In a wild back-and-forth affair, junior forward Trevor Olson scored in overtime to lift No. 14/13 North Dakota to a 6-5 win over No. 20 St. Cloud State Saturday at Ralph Engelstad Arena, finishing an NCHC quarterfinal series sweep of the Huskies. UND ( ) led 3-2 after two periods when Grand Forks native and SCSU sophomore defenseman Jon Lizotte tied the game with the first of his two goals. Minutes later UND regained the lead only for Lizotte to pull the Huskies ( ) even again 4-4 a minute after. Freshman forward Nick Poehling added his second goal of the game to put SCSU in front, but sophomore defenseman Christian Wolanin answered for UND to force overtime. Olson then deflected a shot from fellow junior Johnny Simonson 7:38 into overtime for the game-winner. Behind a three-goal third period, No. 3/3 Minnesota Duluth rallied past Miami for a 5-3 win Saturday at AMSOIL Arena to complete a NCHC quarterfinal series sweep and move on to Minneapolis. The Bulldogs (23-6-7) grabbed a 2-0 lead midway through the second period, but the RedHawks, who finished the season , mounted a rally with their season on the line. A power play goal started the rally in the middle stanza, while sophomore forward Kiefer Sherwood picked up his second point of the night with the tying goal to start the final frame. Senior forward Anthony Louis put Miami in front minutes later. However, UMD potted two goals in a little more than two minutes with seven minutes left in regulation, as senior forward Alex Iafallo scored the game-winner with 4:23 remaining. An empty-net goal then sealed the 5-3 win and playoff sweep. The Bulldogs outshot Miami, Despite giving up an early goal, No. 7/8 Western Michigan responded to earn a 5-2 win over Omaha Saturday at Lawson Ice Arena, tying their best-of-three quarterfinal series at one game apiece. Junior forward Tyler Vesel put the Mavericks ( ) ahead only 48 ticks into the game but goals from sophomore Colt Conrad and freshman Hugh McGing gave WMU ( ) the lead midway through the first frame. Omaha pulled even in the second stanza, but the Broncos poured in three goals in the third period to secure the win, as freshman forward Wade Allison scored the game-winner 52 ticks into the final frame. Conrad added three assists for a career-high four points while McGing had two goals and a career-high three points. Omaha outshot WMU, 38-32, despite the loss, but freshman Ben Blacker made 36 saves to get the win. SUNDAY, MARCH 12 WMU NABS FINAL FROZEN FACEOFF SPOT BY TOPPING OMAHA IN OVERTIME While there was only one National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Quarterfinal series game 3 Sunday night, it certainly provided excitement as third-seeded Western Michigan edged sixth-seeded Omaha, 2-1, in overtime to win the best-of-three series and earn the final Frozen Faceoff berth. With WMU s win, the top four seeds in the NCHC Tournament all advanced to the semifinals for the second straight season, where top-seeded Denver will face No. 4 seed North Dakota and the Broncos will take on No. 2 seed Minnesota Duluth with both games on Friday, March 17 at Target Center in Minneapolis. In his final game at Lawson Ice Arena, senior forward Michael Rebry scored only 34 seconds into overtime to lift No. 7/8 Western Michigan to a 2-1 win over Omaha Sunday night in the decisive third game of their best-of-three NCHC Quarterfinal series. The Broncos ( ) dropped the opening game of the series in overtime by the same, 2-1 score, but won the final two contests to earn their second ever trip to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff and first since the inaugural 2014 event. The Mavericks, who finish their season at , took the lead on a power play goal from junior forward Tyler Vesel early in the first period, but couldn t find the back of the net again. WMU sophomore forward Griffen Molino evened the game with a short-handed tally unassisted in the final minute of the first period.
